of_o a_o imaginary_a religion_n and_o that_o we_o have_v lose_v the_o substance_n of_o religion_n by_o change_v it_o into_o opinion_n and_o that_o by_o these_o mean_v this_o church_n which_o all_o more_o of_o which_o the_o reader_n may_v view_v his_o last_o sad_a sermon_n on_o the_o scaffold_n and_o it_o be_v here_o mention_v because_o his_o dear_a friend_n dr._n sanderson_n seem_v to_o there_o be_v many_o reason_n give_v by_o the_o doctor_n of_o the_o injustice_n of_o his_o imprisonment_n and_o the_o inequality_n of_o the_o exchange_n but_o all_o be_v uneffectual_a for_o do_v it_o aforesaid_a scruple_n either_o concern_v the_o whole_a covenant_n or_o some_o particular_n therein_o of_o special_a importance_n we_o find_v upon_o examination_n to_o be_v no_o way_n satisfactory_a to_o our_o conscience_n the_o first_o be_v that_o we_o may_v take_v the_o the_o covenant_n in_o our_o own_o sense_n but_o this_o in_o a_o matter_n of_o this_o nature_n viz._n a_o impose_v promissory_a bring_v a_o scandal_n upon_o our_o religion_n 1._o that_o we_o practice_n that_o ourselves_o which_o we_o condemn_v in_o the_o papist_n viz._n swear_v with_o jesuitical_a equivocation_n and_o mental_a reservation_n 2._o that_o we_o take_v the_o glorious_a and_o dreadful_a name_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a and_o play_v fast_o and_o loose_a with_o oath_n inasmuch_o as_o what_o we_o swear_v to_o day_n in_o one_o sense_n we_o may_v swear_v the_o direct_a contrary_n to_o morrow_n in_o another_o and_o 3._o it_o will_v give_v strength_n to_o that_o charge_n which_o be_v lay_v to_o the_o presbyterian_a etc._n etc._n but_o 1._o we_o believe_v this_o mock_n of_o god_n will_v be_v so_o far_o from_o free_v we_o from_o the_o guilt_n of_o perjury_n that_o thereby_o we_o shall_v rather_o contract_v a_o new_a guilt_n of_o most_o vile_a and_o abominable_a hypocrisy_n 2._o it_o seem_v all_o one_o unto_o we_o the_o thing_n be_v otherwise_o suppose_v unlawful_a as_o if_o we_o shall_v swear_v to_o kill_v steal_z commit_v adultery_n or_o forswear_v ourselves_o so_o far_o as_o lawful_o we_o may_v 3._o if_o this_o will_v satisfy_v the_o conscience_n we_o may_v with_o a_o good_a conscience_n not_o only_o take_v the_o present_a covenant_n but_o even_o subscribe_v to_o the_o council_n of_o trent_n also_o yea_o and_o to_o the_o turkish_a alcoran_n and_o swear_v to_o maintain_v and_o defend_v either_o
