that_o case_n they_o do_v not_o only_o ready_o submit_v to_o he_o but_o acknowledge_v it_o as_o the_o great_a blessing_n of_o god_n to_o they_o that_o he_o have_v raise_v up_o such_o a_o man_n to_o rule_v over_o they_o this_o be_v the_o notion_n and_o this_o be_v the_o practice_n of_o the_o primitive_a christian_n as_o to_o this_o matter_n i_o may_v indeed_o say_v of_o the_o christian_n in_o their_o zeal_n for_o religion_n be_v very_o faulty_a and_o unblamable_a iii_o his_o discovery_n of_o the_o faultiness_n of_o their_o zeal_n which_o lie_v in_o this_o that_o it_o be_v not_o according_a to_o knowledge_n these_o three_o thing_n i_o shall_v take_v for_o the_o head_n of_o my_o follow_a discourse_n upon_o this_o text_n and_o shall_v afterward_o make_v such_o application_n of_o it_o as_o the_o business_n of_o this_o day_n call_v for_o i._n first_o i_o desire_v it_o may_v be_v observe_v that_o zeal_n of_o god_n in_o general_n that_o be_v a_o hearty_a and_o passionate_a concernment_n thing_n of_o god_n may_v be_v the_o less_o reprovable_a but_o when_o zeal_n and_o passion_n be_v more_o or_o less_o wrought_v into_o every_o man_n temper_n and_o the_o calm_a man_n may_v be_v observe_v on_o sundry_a occasion_n not_o to_o be_v without_o it_o it_o be_v a_o inexcusable_a fault_n to_o have_v no_o passion_n no_o zeal_n for_o god_n and_o his_o cause_n how_o can_v a_o man_n answer_v it_o to_o his_o own_o conscience_n to_o be_v hearty_o angry_a when_o a_o affront_n in_o word_n or_o deed_n be_v do_v to_o himself_o and_o yet_o to_o be_v altogether_o insensible_a when_o god_n be_v affront_v in_o his_o prefence_n to_o make_v a_o mighty_a bustle_n when_o his_o own_o right_a and_o property_n be_v at_o stake_n though_o in_o never_o so_o small_a a_o matter_n and_o yet_o to_o show_v no_o concernment_n for_o the_o right_n and_o the_o honour_n of_o that_o god_n who_o make_v he_o and_o by_o who_o savour_n alone_o it_o be_v that_o he_o can_v call_v any_o thing_n his_o own_o that_o he_o have_v o_o what_o a_o world_n of_o good_a may_v we_o all_o do_v if_o we_o have_v a_o true_a zeal_n of_o god_n how_o many_o occasion_n and_o opportunity_n be_v there_o put_v into_o our_o hand_n every_o day_n in_o what_o condition_n or_o circumstance_n soever_o we_o be_v which_o if_o we_o be_v act_v by_o this_o principle_n will_v render_v we_o great_a benefactor_n to_o mankind_n none_o be_v capable_a of_o be_v thus_o zealous_a but_o those_o that_o have_v attain_v to_o a_o great_a degree_n of_o virtue_n and_o piety_n which_o we_o can_v suppose_v of_o all_o nor_o the_o most_o but_o however_o it_o will_v be_v a_o shame_n to_o all_o of_o we_o if_o we_o do_v not_o come_v up_o to_o that_o pitch_n of_o zeal_n which_o the_o unbelieve_a jew_n be_v here_o commend_v for_o i_o bear_v they_o record_v say_v st._n paul_n that_o they_o have_v a_o zeal_n of_o god_n what_o be_v this_o zeal_n of_o they_o why_o as_o i_o tell_v you_o and_o as_o it_o plain_o appear_v from_o the_o whole_a chapter_n it_o be_v a_o earnest_n and_o passionate_a concernment_n for_o the_o religion_n of_o their_o country_n sure_o all_o man_n among_o we_o both_o good_a and_o bad_a may_v come_v up_o to_o this_o degree_n of_o zeal_n for_o god_n and_o it_o be_v a_o reproach_n to_o we_o if_o we_o do_v not_o especial_o confider_v that_o their_o religion_n at_o that_o time_n be_v not_o god_n religion_n but_o we_o be_v indeed_o the_o public_a profession_n of_o religion_n in_o the_o right_a way_n be_v as_o much_o every_o man_n interest_n and_o aught_o to_o be_v as_o much_o every_o man_n care_n as_o any_o the_o dear_a thing_n he_o have_v in_o this_o world_n nay_o to_o all_o man_n that_o believe_v they_o have_v soul_n to_o fave_v it_o be_v more_o valuable_a than_o any_o other_o worldly_a privilege_n it_o concern_v we_o all_o therefore_o to_o be_v zealous_a in_o that_o matter_n the_o duty_n we_o owe_v to_o god_n to_o our_o country_n and_o to_o ourselves_o do_v require_v it_o in_o vain_a it_o be_v to_o be_v busy_a about_o other_o thing_n and_o to_o neglect_v this_o a_o man_n will_v have_v but_o small_a comfort_n when_o he_o come_v to_o die_v to_o reflect_v that_o he_o they_o he_o do_v not_o excite_v any_o person_n to_o use_v force_n or_o violence_n to_o they_o but_o he_o rather_o pity_v they_o he_o make_v their_o zeal_n that_o they_o have_v of_o god_n a_o inducement_n the_o more_o hearty_o to_o pray_v for_o they_o that_o god_n will_v direct_v they_o in_o the_o right_a way_n that_o lead_v to_o salvation_n though_o he_o be_v far_o from_o approve_v their_o blind_a zeal_n in_o so_o obstinate_o oppose_v the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n that_o be_v that_o method_n which_o god_n have_v prescribe_v for_o the_o attain_n of_o righteousness_n by_o the_o faith_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o set_v up_o a_o righteousness_n of_o their_o own_o which_o consist_v chief_o in_o observe_v the_o ceremonial_n of_o moses_n his_o law_n and_o the_o tradition_n of_o zealot_n aught_o to_o be_v a_o rule_n for_o we_o to_o walk_v by_o in_o the_o like_a case_n if_o man_n be_v of_o a_o different_a way_n from_o we_o as_o to_o religion_n if_o they_o hold_v other_o opinion_n or_o though_o they_o be_v of_o another_o communion_n from_o we_o and_o though_o too_o we_o be_v sure_o they_o be_v mistake_v nay_o and_o dangerous_o mistake_v too_o yet_o if_o they_o have_v a_o zeal_n of_o god_n if_o they_o be_v serious_a and_o sincere_a in_o their_o way_n if_o their_o error_n in_o religion_n be_v the_o pure_a result_v of_o a_o misinform_v conscience_n let_v we_o as_o the_o apostle_n here_o do_v take_v occasion_n from_o hence_o to_o pity_v they_o and_o to_o put_v up_o hearty_a prayer_n to_o god_n for_o they_o and_o to_o endeavour_v all_o we_o can_v by_o gentle_a method_n to_o reduce_v they_o to_o the_o right_a way_n but_o by_o no_o mean_n to_o express_v contempt_n or_o hatred_n of_o they_o or_o to_o treat_v they_o with_o violence_n and_o outrage_n so_o far_o as_o their_o zeal_n be_v for_o god_n let_v we_o so_o far_o show_v tenderness_n and_o compassion_n to_o they_o and_o if_o their_o zeal_n be_v in_o such_o instance_n as_o be_v real_o commendable_a let_v we_o in_o such_o instance_n not_o only_o bear_v with_o they_o but_o propose_v they_o for_o our_o example_n this_o i_o say_v be_v the_o apostle_n practice_n and_o i_o think_v it_o be_v so_o agreeable_a to_o the_o spirit_n and_o temper_n of_o our_o great_a lord_n and_o master_n christ_n that_o it_o will_v become_v we_o in_o like_a case_n to_o act_v according_o but_o then_o after_o i_o have_v say_v this_o these_o two_o thing_n be_v always_o to_o be_v remember_v first_o that_o our_o tenderness_n to_o mistake_a zealot_n must_v always_o be_v so_o manage_v as_o that_o the_o true_a religion_n or_o the_o public_a peace_n suffer_v no_o damage_n thereby_o and_o therefore_o how_o kind_o and_o compassionate_o soever_o we_o as_o private_a christian_n be_v to_o treat_v those_o that_o differ_v from_o we_o and_o pursue_v a_o wrong_a way_n out_o of_o conscience_n yet_o this_o do_v not_o hinder_v but_o that_o both_o wholesome_a law_n may_v be_v make_v for_o the_o restrain_v the_o exorbitance_n of_o mistake_a zeal_n and_o when_o those_o law_n be_v make_v that_o they_o may_v be_v put_v in_o execution_n the_o consideration_n of_o lawgiver_n and_o magistrate_n be_v different_a from_o that_o of_o that_o the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v observe_v that_o god_n religion_n as_o it_o be_v deliver_v by_o jesus_n christ_n be_v preserve_v sincere_a and_o undefiled_a and_o that_o the_o solemn_a worship_n of_o god_n be_v pure_o and_o decent_o perform_v and_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o that_o in_o all_o these_o matter_n the_o government_n may_v make_v fence_n and_o security_n against_o the_o insult_v of_o intemperate_a zealot_n and_o when_o these_o fence_n

conversation_n to_o expose_v all_o religion_n and_o to_o bring_v it_o into_o contempt_n that_o ridicule_n the_o professor_n of_o it_o as_o a_o company_n of_o easy_a credulous_a man_n that_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o blaspheme_a god_n and_o all_o thing_n sacred_a as_o occasion_n be_v give_v they_o why_o these_o man_n may_v have_v zeal_n enough_o for_o their_o opinion_n and_o we_o find_v that_o they_o often_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n too_o much_o but_o be_v such_o to_o be_v treat_v with_o that_o sort_n of_o tenderness_n and_o compassion_n that_o we_o be_v now_o speak_v of_o no_o by_o no_o mean_n for_o they_o be_v quite_o out_o of_o the_o bound_n of_o my_o text_n they_o have_v a_o zeal_n indeed_o but_o it_o be_v not_o a_o zeal_n for_o god_n but_o for_o the_o devil_n and_o the_o interest_n of_o his_o kingdom_n and_o if_o one_o be_v to_o measure_v the_o greatness_n of_o crime_n by_o the_o mischief_n they_o do_v to_o humane_a society_n i_o shall_v think_v that_o this_o sort_n of_o people_n be_v not_o to_o expect_v so_o much_o favour_n and_o respect_n from_o mankind_n as_o some_o other_o malefactor_n that_o yet_o by_o our_o law_n be_v to_o pay_v for_o their_o offence_n at_o the_o upright_o man._n second_o the_o promise_n or_o the_o blessedness_n itself_o it_o be_v light_a in_o time_n of_o darkness_n i_o begin_v with_o the_o character_n of_o the_o person_n to_o who_o this_o promise_n be_v make_v he_o be_v the_o upright_o man_n or_o as_o in_o our_o more_o common_a language_n we_o express_v he_o the_o honest_a man_n the_o man_n of_o integrity_n we_o all_o know_v so_o well_o what_o be_v mean_v by_o these_o word_n that_o it_o will_v render_v the_o thing_n more_o difficult_a to_o offer_v critical_o to_o give_v light_n to_o they_o as_o all_o those_o general_a term_n whereby_o a_o man_n be_v whole_a duty_n be_v express_v in_o scripture_n have_v their_o several_a respect_n and_o consideration_n which_o difference_n they_o one_o from_o the_o other_o though_o they_o be_v all_o equal_o comprehensive_a so_o have_v this_o term_n of_o uprightness_n that_o which_o it_o immediate_o and_o particular_o respect_v be_v the_o goodness_n of_o a_o man_n principle_n and_o the_o suitableness_n of_o his_o action_n to_o they_o or_o thus_o the_o conformity_n of_o a_o man_n mind_n to_o the_o eternal_a rule_n of_o righteousness_n and_o the_o conformity_n of_o his_o action_n to_o the_o principle_n of_o his_o mind_n this_o be_v that_o upon_o account_n of_o which_o any_o person_n be_v denominate_v upright_o and_o contrary_a to_o this_o be_v all_o hypocritical_a and_o partial_a deal_n in_o matter_n of_o our_o duty_n so_o that_o if_o we_o will_v give_v the_o definition_n of_o a_o upright_o man_n it_o shall_v be_v in_o such_o term_n as_o these_o he_o be_v a_o man_n that_o in_o all_o thing_n follow_v the_o dictate_v of_o his_o conscience_n or_o he_o be_v one_o that_o make_v his_o duty_n the_o rule_n of_o his_o action_n or_o he_o be_v one_o that_o always_o propose_v to_o himself_o righteous_a end_n and_o pursue_v those_o end_n in_o righteous_a way_n this_o be_v the_o general_a description_n of_o the_o upright_o man_n but_o for_o the_o more_o lively_o display_v of_o he_o and_o the_o render_v he_o as_o more_o amiable_a so_o more_o imitable_a it_o will_v be_v fit_a that_o we_o represent_v he_o a_o little_a more_o particular_o under_o those_o several_a respect_n and_o capacity_n in_o which_o his_o uprightness_n be_v principal_o see_v and_o express_v and_o here_o we_o must_v consider_v he_o with_o respect_n to_o god_n and_o with_o respect_n to_o men._n under_o the_o former_a consideration_n we_o be_v to_o view_v his_o religion_n under_o the_o latter_a his_o civil_a conversation_n and_o none_o ought_v to_o be_v surprise_v that_o in_o the_o character_n of_o a_o upright_o man_n we_o take_v notice_n of_o his_o religious_a carriage_n towards_o god_n for_o in_o truth_n that_o be_v a_o point_n which_o be_v essential_o necessary_a to_o uprightness_n he_o say_v solomon_n that_o walk_v in_o uprightness_n fear_v the_o lord_n 14.2_o prov._n 14.2_o indeed_o take_v away_o religion_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o the_o foundation_n of_o uprightness_n be_v destroy_v for_o all_o the_o principle_n of_o conscience_n and_o all_o the_o obligation_n to_o live_v up_o to_o those_o principle_n be_v thereby_o take_v away_o he_o that_o have_v no_o sense_n of_o god_n and_o religion_n can_v never_o think_v himself_o bind_v to_o observe_v any_o rule_n in_o his_o action_n and_o behaviour_n but_o what_o be_v subservient_fw-fr to_o the_o carry_v on_o his_o private_a sensual_a worldly_a interest_n and_o consequent_o whatever_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o that_o be_v it_o never_o so_o base_a and_o vile_a and_o injurious_a he_o can_v take_v himself_o in_o point_n of_o duty_n oblige_v to_o stick_v at_o it_o when_o he_o have_v the_o least_o temptation_n to_o it_o the_o result_n of_o which_o be_v that_o he_o may_v commit_v all_o the_o villainy_n in_o the_o world_n and_o yet_o think_v himself_o as_o innocent_a and_o his_o action_n as_o commendable_a as_o if_o he_o have_v be_v never_o so_o honest_a and_o virtuous_a he_o therefore_o that_o be_v a_o upright_o man_n have_v a_o serious_a and_o hearty_a sense_n of_o god_n and_o religion_n upon_o his_o spirit_n and_o be_v above_o all_o thing_n careful_a to_o preserve_v and_o increase_v that_o sense_n but_o then_o his_o conduct_n in_o this_o affair_n be_v much_o different_a from_o that_o of_o ordinary_a pretender_n to_o religion_n for_o he_o be_v a_o man_n that_o do_v not_o content_v himself_o with_o a_o mere_a speculative_a belief_n or_o a_o outward_a profession_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o religion_n but_o do_v so_o far_o impress_v they_o on_o his_o heart_n that_o they_o influence_n his_o whole_a life_n and_o conversation_n he_o do_v not_o think_v it_o sufficient_a to_o be_v orthodox_n in_o his_o opinion_n or_o to_o be_v a_o member_n of_o a_o true_a church_n or_o to_o be_v zealous_a in_o maintain_v and_o promote_a the_o right_a way_n but_o he_o take_v care_n to_o live_v as_o he_o believe_v to_o practice_v suitable_o to_o the_o prefession_n he_o make_v as_o he_o hold_v fast_o the_o form_n of_o godliness_n so_o he_o never_o fail_v to_o express_v the_o power_n of_o it_o in_o a_o innocent_a and_o a_o virtuous_a life_n he_o be_v a_o man_n that_o in_o the_o whole_a conduct_n of_o his_o religious_a affair_n mind_n conscience_n more_o than_o any_o selfish_a consideration_n he_o take_v not_o up_o his_o principle_n either_o out_o of_o humour_n or_o passion_n to_o advance_v his_o interest_n or_o to_o please_v a_o party_n but_o he_o believe_v a_o thing_n because_o it_o be_v true_a and_o profess_v it_o because_o it_o be_v his_o duty_n in_o matter_n of_o religion_n he_o have_v the_o indifference_n of_o a_o traveller_n who_o great_a concernment_n be_v to_o arrive_v at_o his_o journey_n end_n but_o
their_o judgement_n or_o immoral_a in_o their_o life_n what_o will_v these_o man_n be_v able_a to_o say_v for_o themselves_o when_o they_o come_v to_o appear_v before_o the_o judge_n of_o the_o world_n at_o the_o great_a day_n of_o account_n will_v they_o pretend_v there_o be_v not_o force_n enough_o in_o the_o gospel-evidence_n to_o convince_v they_o or_o weight_n enough_o in_o its_o motive_n to_o reclaim_v they_o ah_o their_o own_o heart_n will_v give_v they_o the_o lye_n they_o can_v no_o long_o be_v able_a to_o deceive_v themselves_o there_o will_v be_v no_o unbeliever_n no_o sear_a conscience_n in_o the_o other_o state_n they_o will_v then_o be_v clear_o convince_v that_o god_n for_o his_o part_n do_v all_o that_o be_v necessary_a nay_o all_o that_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v
