most_o ease_n convenience_n and_o safety_n to_o ourselves_o this_o prudence_n look_v at_o in_o all_o our_o way_n whether_o the_o discharge_v of_o duty_n or_o any_o other_o that_o be_v free_a and_o leave_v to_o ourselves_o and_o this_o prudence_n christianity_n must_v moderate_v that_o our_o care_n for_o our_o safety_n neveâ—_n carry_v we_o against_o or_o make_v we_o careless_a of_o our_o duty_n and_o upon_o both_o these_o viz._n the_o way_n of_o secure_v both_o religion_n and_o ourselves_o i_o shall_v observe_v severaâ—_n limitation_n which_o in_o regard_n to_o the_o nature_n and_o rule_n of_o christianity_n spiritual_a prudence_n lay_v on_o we_o whilst_o a_o latitude_n be_v give_v therein_o by_o fleshly_a wisdom_n and_o take_v by_o the_o worldly_a wise._n 1._o in_o the_o first_o place_n then_o i_o observe_v of_o spiritual_a wisdom_n that_o it_o be_v never_o for_o do_v evil_a that_o good_a may_v come_v this_o good_a be_v any_o fleshly_a convenience_n or_o benefit_n of_o this_o world_n that_o concern_v we_o either_o as_o man_n or_o christian_n and_o this_o who_o worldly_a convenience_n soever_o it_o serve_v whether_o our_o own_o or_o our_o friend_n and_o relation_n whether_o of_o few_o or_o many_o private_a or_o public_a of_o religion_n or_o civil_a government_n church_n or_o state_n these_o thing_n be_v the_o main_a care_n of_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o great_a mark_n which_o the_o prudence_n of_o this_o world_n drive_v at_o and_o spiritual_a prudence_n allow_v the_o seek_v thereof_o so_o long_o as_o it_o be_v without_o sin_n but_o it_o give_v no_o leave_n to_o do_v ill_a i._n e._n to_o omit_v any_o duty_n or_o transgress_v any_o commandment_n for_o they_o i_o speak_v of_o commandment_n that_o require_v thing_n of_o a_o natural_a or_o moral_a obligation_n in_o mere_a positives_n as_o circumcision_n shewbread_n and_o the_o sabbatick-râ—st_a god_n sometime_o allow_v more_o liberty_n in_o case_n of_o necessity_n or_o great_a convenience_n as_o the_o omission_n of_o circumcision_n be_v connive_v at_o for_o the_o extreme_a burdensomness_n thereof_o whilst_o they_o be_v in_o a_o travel_a state_n in_o the_o wilderness_n but_o natural_a or_o moral_a obligation_n be_v not_o to_o give_v way_n to_o any_o outward_a convenience_n in_o case_n of_o these_o spiritual_a prudence_n be_v not_o for_o do_v a_o spiritual_a ill_n for_o any_o worldly_a good_a it_o will_v rather_o suffer_v any_o ill_a than_o do_v it_o it_o get_v by_o the_o ill_a it_o suffer_v if_o it_o can_v suffer_v with_o patience_n and_o innocence_n but_o it_o always_o lose_v by_o the_o ill_a it_o do_v though_o it_o get_v a_o worldly_a convenience_n it_o part_n with_o what_o be_v incomparable_o better_a its_o integrity_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n it_o will_v never_o yield_v to_o commit_v a_o sin_n no_o not_o for_o the_o worldly_a convenience_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n and_o religion_n not_o own_v that_o corrupt_a and_o ungodly_a maxim_n of_o break_v religion_n to_o preserve_v religion_n be_v wise_a as_o serpent_n but_o simple_a and_o innocent_a as_o dove_n say_v our_o saviour_n mat._n 10.16_o that_o be_v say_v a_o chrysâ—st_n old_a and_o they_o seek_v without_o do_v ill_o for_o it_o that_o not_o only_a christian_n but_o christian_n of_o all_o persuasion_n be_v ready_a to_o think_v and_o profess_v it_o be_v otherwise_o this_o be_v the_o general_n effect_v of_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o in_o their_o necessity_n offer_v itself_o and_o too_o oft_o god_n know_v with_o overmuch_o success_n to_o all_o that_o have_v fleshly_a nature_n and_o be_v not_o confine_v to_o any_o sect_n or_o party_n they_o that_o will_v blame_v it_o when_o they_o do_v not_o need_v it_o and_o cry_v out_o of_o it_o in_o other_o be_v ready_a alas_o most_o shameful_o many_o time_n to_o justify_v it_o in_o their_o need_n and_o practice_v by_o it_o themselves_o but_o when_o they_o do_v thus_o it_o be_v only_o at_o the_o incitation_n of_o fleshly_a wisdom_n of_o that_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d or_o craftiness_n that_o make_v use_v of_o any_o thing_n which_o will_v help_v on_o a_o design_n and_o which_o the_o scripture_n so_o be_v we_o reminded_a to_o make_v use_n of_o these_o late_a as_o occasion_n serve_v by_o the_o more_o importunate_a crave_n of_o our_o sensual_a nature_n and_o necessity_n and_o the_o more_o loud_a voice_n of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n now_o as_o our_o fleshy_a nature_n and_o necessity_n require_v so_o do_v religion_n allow_v we_o to_o serve_v ourselves_o of_o these_o rule_n of_o humane_a prudence_n so_o long_o as_o we_o keep_v within_o a_o due_a compass_n that_o be_v whilst_o we_o betake_v ourselves_o only_o to_o such_o way_n of_o external_a quiet_a and_o enjoyment_n in_o this_o world_n as_o go_v not_o out_o of_o any_o way_n of_o religion_n or_o path_n of_o happiness_n lead_v to_o another_o world_n whilst_o the_o rule_n of_o wisdom_n be_v only_o such_o as_o afford_v ease_n or_o comfort_n in_o our_o passage_n but_o do_v not_o carry_v we_o out_o of_o our_o way_n or_o stop_v our_o progress_n when_o be_v send_v out_o his_o disciple_n as_o sheep_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o wolf_n be_v wise_a say_v our_o lord_n to_o they_o as_o serpent_n so_o long_o as_o they_o take_v care_n first_o to_o keep_v as_o innocent_a or_o simple_a and_o plain-carriaged_n as_o dove_n mat._n reproach_n and_o persecution_n upon_o a_o duty_n be_v the_o true_a test_n of_o its_o worthy_a and_o faithful_a votary_n and_o discover_v who_o they_o be_v that_o set_v it_o above_o this_o world_n and_o god_n be_v careful_a in_o the_o course_n of_o providence_n still_o to_o annex_v worldly_a suffering_n to_o some_o duty_n of_o religion_n or_o other_o to_o separate_v the_o impure_a dross_n and_o very_o willing_a to_o believe_v they_o right_o the_o generality_n of_o mankind_n be_v prone_a to_o see_v and_o assent_v on_o that_o side_n which_o appear_v most_o safe_a and_o consistent_a with_o this_o present_a world_n they_o be_v apt_a to_o bid_v a_o hearty_a welcome_n and_o listen_v to_o any_o one_o that_o speak_v for_o that_o way_n and_o be_v easy_o convince_v by_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v deceive_v and_o it_o be_v well_o if_o not_o active_a to_o deceive_v themselves_o into_o such_o a_o persuasion_n and_o when_o flesh_n and_o blood_n be_v like_a to_o be_v so_o busy_a and_o powerful_a on_o such_o occasion_n to_o recommend_v such_o way_n of_o worldly_a prudence_n it_o be_v very_o necessary_a our_o mind_n and_o conscience_n shall_v not_o be_v without_o their_o armour_n but_o have_v clear_a conviction_n of_o their_o folly_n and_o unlawfulness_n to_o oppose_v against_o they_o to_o afford_v some_o help_n in_o this_o point_n to_o such_o sincere_a temper_n as_o will_v be_v thankful_a to_o be_v show_v a_o lose_a truth_n and_o glad_a to_o approve_v themselves_o to_o god_n on_o such_o occasion_n i_o shall_v offer_v something_o though_o imperfect_a to_o set_v off_o the_o way_n of_o true_a wisdom_n and_o to_o show_v what_o be_v the_o limitation_n of_o religious_a prudence_n and_o what_o the_o contrary_a liberty_n of_o fleshly_a wisdom_n or_o worldly_a craftiness_n that_o so_o they_o may_v not_o err_v for_o want_v of_o information_n when_o in_o course_n of_o providence_n they_o be_v bring_v on_o such_o trial_n chap._n i._o of_o the_o nature_n of_o christian_a prudence_n and_o how_o see_v in_o choose_v right_a ends._n wisdom_n or_o prudence_n at_o large_a be_v be_v wise_a for_o ourselves_o or_o see_v and_o follow_v what_o reason_n set_v off_o as_o best_a for_o we_o it_o be_v reason_n contemplate_v not_o the_o mere_a truth_n of_o thing_n which_o be_v science_n but_o their_o goodness_n and_o desirableness_n or_o what_o be_v best_a for_o we_o to_o seek_v or_o practice_v and_o about_o this_o practice_n it_o consider_v not_o only_a how_o to_o do_v thing_n skilful_o which_o be_v the_o consideration_n of_o art_n but_o how_o to_o do_v they_o profitable_o respect_v either_o their_o future_a accountableness_n for_o reward_n or_o punishment_n or_o imply_v moral_a good_a or_o ill_a and_o be_v direct_v by_o or_o promotive_a of_o any_o virtue_n or_o their_o worldly_a usefulness_n and_o advantage_n to_o the_o end_n we_o be_v drive_v on_o or_o have_v to_o serve_v in_o this_o life_n it_o note_v reason_n not_o only_o contemplate_v these_o thing_n but_o influence_v and_o effect_v they_o for_o prudence_n speak_v the_o commendableness_n of_o several_a power_n it_o carry_v with_o it_o the_o virtue_n of_o our_o will_n as_o well_o as_o of_o our_o understanding_n and_o beside_o the_o skill_n to_o see_v what_o be_v good_a for_o we_o include_v also_o such_o influence_n over_o our_o other_o power_n as_o make_v they_o follow_v it_o and_o take_v up_o therewith_o a_o man_n may_v be_v a_o know_a man_n that_o act_n against_o the_o true_a dictate_v of_o his_o own_o reason_n but_o he_o only_o be_v a_o true_o wise_a and_o prudent_a person_n of_o sin_n to_o eternal_a life_n 294._o say_v that_o good_a father_n to_o those_o who_o take_v the_o judgement_n of_o the_o multitude_n for_o 〈◊〉_d proof_n and_o evidence_n of_o truth_n thus_o have_v for_o the_o great_a good_a of_o our_o soul_n this_o be_v employ_v when_o this_o prudence_n be_v recommend_v and_o require_v by_o our_o lord_n under_o the_o name_n of_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o quiet_n to_o secure_v or_o augment_v these_o or_o other_o earthly_a good_a thing_n to_o ourselves_o our_o friend_n and_o family_n to_o the_o church_n or_o state_n all_o these_o be_v worldly_a ends._n and_o to_o be_v wise_a for_o they_o be_v worldly_a prudence_n and_o this_o we_o have_v all_o need_n of_o here_o because_o we_o be_v member_n of_o this_o world_n need_v worldly_a thing_n and_o be_v twist_v in_o worldly_a relation_n good_a man_n and_o good_a christian_n as_o well_o as_o other_o but_o though_o we_o live_v in_o this_o world_n we_o aim_v at_o a_o better_a world_n we_o be_v keep_v alive_a by_o worldly_a thing_n but_o we_o live_v for_o better_a even_o for_o heavenly_a thing_n which_o religion_n show_v and_o which_o the_o way_n thereof_o will_v procure_v for_o we_o so_o that_o the_o wisdom_n of_o religion_n must_v limit_v and_o over-rule_v we_o in_o all_o the_o act_n of_o wisdom_n and_o prudence_n we_o show_v about_o the_o lesser_a and_o inferior_a thing_n of_o this_o life_n the_o flesh_n must_v be_v subject_a to_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o wisdom_n of_o this_o world_n to_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o next_o now_o concern_v this_o overrule_a influence_n of_o
