A73418 Roger Widdringtons last reioynder to Mr. Thomas Fitz-Herberts Reply concerning the oath of allegiance, and the Popes power to depose princes wherein all his arguments, taken from the lawes of God, in the Old and New Testament, of nature, of nations, from the canon and ciuill law, and from the Popes breues, condemning the oath, and the cardinalls decree, forbidding two of Widdringtons bookes are answered : also many replies and instances of Cardinall Bellarmine in his Schulckenius, and of Leonard Lessius in his Singleton are confuted, and diuers cunning shifts of Cardinall Peron are discouered. so_o good_a sincere_a and_o zealous_a a_o catholic_a and_o yet_o lie_v lurk_v and_o schulk_v under_o another_o man_n name_n of_o purpose_n as_o it_o seem_v to_o lash_v out_o more_o free_o contumelious_a word_n which_o in_o his_o own_o name_n he_o will_v blush_v to_o utter_v for_o otherwise_o he_o need_v not_o to_o disguise_v himself_o for_o fear_n of_o incur_v the_o displeasure_n of_o prince_n for_o the_o doctrine_n he_o teach_v so_o prejudicial_a to_o their_o temporal_a sovereignty_n which_o also_o he_o will_v needs_o have_v to_o be_v forsooth_o a_o undoubted_a point_n of_o catholic_a faith_n both_o for_o that_o he_o be_v a_o man_n of_o so_o high_a a_o rank_n and_o place_n and_o live_v out_o of_o their_o dominion_n and_o subjection_n can_v by_o their_o indignation_n not_o long_o before_o in_o his_o own_o shape_n and_o name_n without_o put_v on_o any_o mask_n or_o vizard_n in_o very_o plain_a word_n maintain_v but_o in_o what_o a_o exorbitant_a manner_n the_o never_o so_o great_a submission_n which_o seem_v in_o their_o opinion_n to_o derogate_v from_o that_o authority_n which_o some_o pope_n of_o late_a year_n have_v claim_v as_o due_a to_o they_o although_o it_o be_v and_o ever_o have_v be_v contradict_v by_o learned_a catholic_n it_o be_v too_o too_o manifest_a and_o their_o proceed_n against_o i_o and_o my_o book_n in_o command_v i_o under_o force_n mean_n or_o ability_n actual_o to_o obtain_v the_o same_o and_o to_o remove_v all_o impediment_n which_o may_v hinder_v the_o same_o and_o so_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n be_v a_o perfect_a and_o well_o institute_v spiritual_a commonwealth_n have_v all_o sufficient_a spiritual_a authority_n forasmuch_o as_o concern_v the_o authority_n itself_o to_o the_o attain_n of_o her_o spiritual_a all_o the_o let_n that_o may_v hinder_v the_o obtain_n thereof_o but_o withal_o i_o deny_v that_o the_o authority_n to_o use_v and_o dispose_v of_o temporal_a thing_n or_o to_o inflict_v temporal_a punishment_n be_v necessary_a in_o spiritual_a pastor_n to_o the_o save_n of_o soul_n but_o that_o the_o authority_n to_o use_v and_o dispose_v of_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o to_o inflict_v 22_o neither_o do_v it_o therefore_o follow_v as_o card._n bellarmine_n pretend_v to_o conclude_v that_o if_o the_o church_n have_v not_o authority_n to_o use_v and_o dispose_v of_o temporall_n and_o may_v punish_v they_o grievous_o with_o ecclesiastical_a censure_n which_o punishment_n be_v so_o great_a and_o dreadful_a that_o of_o themselves_o they_o be_v able_a to_o terrify_v any_o christian_a spiritual_a authority_n of_o the_o church_n can_v inflict_v upon_o he_o any_o temporal_a or_o civil_a punishment_n for_o that_o the_o only_a and_o last_o punishment_n which_o the_o church_n or_o holiness_n in_o the_o catholic_a faith_n and_o in_o those_o many_o thing_n which_o your_o holiness_n by_o your_o breve_n have_v declare_v to_o be_v plain_o repugnant_a to_o faith_n and_o salvation_n and_o your_o holiness_n do_v damn_v and_o forbid_v our_o petition_n and_o do_v ordain_v after_o a_o manner_n altogether_o unusual_a that_o i_o the_o author_n thereof_o who_o in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o rest_n have_v write_v and_o compose_v the_o same_o except_o i_o purge_v myself_o very_o speedy_o shall_v be_v punish_v most_o severe_o for_o as_o i_o think_v in_o no_o tribunal_n on_o the_o earth_n this_o custom_n be_v to_o be_v find_v that_o any_o man_n be_v compel_v by_o sentence_n of_o the_o judge_n to_o purge_v himself_o under_o pain_n of_o incur_v most_o grievous_a punishment_n unless_o the_o judge_n do_v make_v know_v unto_o he_o the_o crime_n for_o which_o if_o he_o do_v not_o purge_v himself_o he_o be_v to_o be_v condemn_v beside_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o one_o to_o purge_v himself_o of_o that_o crime_n whereof_o he_o be_v ignorant_a 18._o and_o to_o speak_v free_o the_o truth_n for_o now_o i_o be_v summon_v before_o the_o high_a tribunal_n on_o earth_n to_o purge_v myself_o be_o by_o the_o law_n itself_o permit_v to_o speak_v somewhat_o more_o free_o so_o that_o i_o speak_v true_o and_o modest_o this_o new_a kind_n of_o condemn_v the_o book_n of_o catholic_a author_n and_o of_o command_v the_o author_n to_o purge_v himself_o forthwith_o be_v make_v by_o such_o a_o public_a decree_n and_o under_o pain_n of_o incur_v the_o penalty_n contain_v in_o the_o council_n of_o trent_n and_o in_o the_o index_n of_o forbid_a book_n without_o name_v any_o crime_n eiher_n in_o particular_a or_o in_o general_a for_o which_o they_o be_v condemn_v and_o of_o which_o the_o author_n shall_v purge_v himself_o consider_v that_o the_o same_o punishment_n be_v not_o appoint_v in_o the_o index_n for_o read_v without_o
