godless_a &_o ungodly_a counsel_n five_o that_o god_n take_v to_o himself_o the_o power_n to_o dispose_v of_o earthly_a kingdom_n and_o to_o give_v king_n and_o ruler_n at_o his_o own_o pleasure_n that_o may_v arise_v from_o the_o opposition_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ._n for_o it_o may_v trouble_v &_o amaze_v they_o to_o consider_v how_o christ_n be_v oppose_v by_o the_o scribe_n &_o pharisee_n who_o be_v the_o great_a learned_a man_n of_o the_o time_n and_o such_o as_o be_v eminent_a in_o the_o church_n and_o in_o the_o account_n of_o the_o most_o man_n be_v the_o chief_a person_n that_o take_v care_n for_o religion_n and_o the_o state_n of_o the_o church_n and_o do_v excel_v all_o other_o sort_n etc._n etc._n now_o that_o this_o scandal_n may_v be_v remove_v he_o show_v in_o these_o word_n first_o that_o nothing_o do_v therein_o fall_v out_o but_o what_o

by_o call_v and_o in_o the_o account_n of_o the_o multitude_n builder_n yâ—t_v god_n will_v reject_v they_o and_o go_v on_o with_o his_o work_n in_o convert_v both_o jew_n and_o gentile_n without_o they_o the_o judgement_n express_v be_v that_o christ_n who_o they_o so_o much_o hate_v and_o oppose_v shall_v be_v in_o spite_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o to_o their_o extreme_a vexation_n make_v king_n of_o the_o church_n and_o exalt_v to_o supreme_a power_n over_o all_o thing_n and_o the_o only_a stay_n of_o the_o whole_a church_n both_o of_o jew_n and_o gentile_n and_o herein_o it_o be_v to_o be_v note_v both_o the_o manner_n how_o this_o shall_v be_v do_v in_o the_o word_n be_v become_v or_o be_v make_v and_o also_o the_o time_n in_o that_o he_o say_v it_o be_v make_v builder_n quest._n a_o question_n may_v be_v move_v here_o for_o the_o sense_n viz._n how_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n and_o such_o like_a man_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v builder_n builder_n answ._n for_o answer_v hereunto_o we_o must_v understand_v that_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n and_o so_o wicked_a man_n that_o possess_v eminent_a place_n in_o the_o church_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v builder_n first_o in_o the_o account_n of_o the_o multitude_n whatsoever_o they_o be_v indeed_o yet_o they_o be_v so_o account_v as_o builder_n and_o prime_a man_n in_o manage_v the_o affair_n of_o the_o church_n second_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n may_v be_v acknowledge_v in_o some_o respect_n as_o builder_n indeed_o they_o do_v god_n some_o work_n for_o howsoever_o they_o do_v not_o sound_o teach_v christ_n yet_o they_o draw_v the_o people_n by_o their_o doctrine_n to_o avoid_v on_o the_o right_a hand_n the_o stoical_a strictness_n of_o the_o essenes_n and_o on_o the_o left_a his_o enemy_n what_o will_v he_o do_v with_o his_o own_o child_n and_o servant_n how_o will_v he_o honour_v and_o reward_v they_o and_o if_o the_o notorious_a opposition_n of_o the_o pharisee_n can_v that_o christ_n and_o religion_n and_o the_o sincerity_n of_o the_o gospel_n may_v be_v disallow_v and_o oppose_v by_o great_a learned_a man_n by_o such_o as_o be_v of_o great_a mark_n in_o the_o church_n even_o by_o such_o as_o be_v governor_n of_o the_o church_n in_o name_n and_o title_n quest._n 1._o two_o question_n do_v easy_o rise_v in_o man_n mind_n upon_o the_o hear_n of_o this_o doctrine_n the_o first_o be_v whence_o it_o shall_v be_v that_o learned_a man_n who_o have_v more_o mean_n to_o understand_v the_o truth_n than_o other_o man_n and_o by_o their_o call_n more_o especial_o tie_v to_o the_o study_n of_o all_o truth_n yet_o shall_v be_v draw_v to_o oppose_v or_o reject_v christ_n and_o the_o truth_n answ._n i_o answer_v that_o this_o may_v come_v to_o pass_v diverse_o gospel_n first_o sometime_o it_o be_v because_o of_o their_o ignorance_n neither_o may_v this_o seem_v strange_a that_o they_o shall_v be_v ignorant_a for_o though_o they_o may_v be_v very_o learned_a in_o some_o part_n of_o study_n yet_o they_o may_v be_v very_o blockish_a in_o some_o other_o beside_o the_o natural_a heart_n of_o man_n do_v not_o take_v any_o great_a delight_n in_o the_o study_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o therefore_o the_o answer_n of_o christ_n be_v proper_a you_o err_v not_o know_v the_o scripture_n or_o the_o power_n of_o god_n second_o in_o some_o it_o be_v because_o of_o their_o secret_a atheism_n many_o learned_a man_n be_v very_a atheist_n in_o heart_n and_o such_o be_v some_o of_o the_o pharisee_n for_o they_o neither_o know_v the_o father_n nor_o christ_n as_o he_o charge_v they_o three_o some_o have_v a_o spirit_n of_o slumber_n they_o have_v eye_n and_o yet_o can_v see_v as_o in_o the_o case_n of_o some_o of_o those_o pharisee_n they_o can_v not_o apply_v the_o very_a thing_n themselves_o speak_v for_o be_v ask_v about_o the_o king_n of_o the_o jew_n mat._n 2._o they_o can_v answer_v direct_o out_o of_o the_o scripture_n and_o give_v such_o sigâ—â—s_n of_o the_o messiah_n as_o do_v evident_o agree_v to_o jesus_n christ_n and_o yet_o these_o man_n be_v so_o infatuate_v that_o when_o god_n show_v they_o the_o man_n to_o who_o their_o own_o sign_n agree_v they_o can_v allow_v of_o he_o four_o in_o some_o it_o be_v envy_v they_o be_v so_o fret_v at_o the_o credit_n and_o fame_n of_o christ_n or_o such_o as_o sincere_o preach_v christ_n that_o for_o very_a envy_n they_o strive_v to_o destroy_v the_o work_n of_o god_n and_o to_o disparage_v the_o progress_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n they_o can_v endure_v to_o see_v all_o the_o world_n as_o they_o account_v it_o to_o follow_v christ._n five_o in_o other_o it_o be_v ambition_n and_o desire_v of_o preeminence_n and_o the_o quiet_a usurpation_n of_o the_o dignity_n of_o the_o church_n that_o they_o alone_o may_v reign_v and_o be_v have_v in_o request_n this_o no_o doubt_v move_v the_o pharisee_n and_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o diotrephes_n make_v such_o a_o stir_n in_o the_o church_n six_o in_o other_o it_o be_v covetousness_n and_o desire_n of_o gain_n these_o be_v they_o that_o account_v gain_v to_o be_v godliness_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v and_o such_o be_v some_o of_o the_o pharisee_n luke_n 16.14_o seven_o in_o other_o it_o be_v a_o wilful_a and_o a_o malicious_a hatred_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o such_o be_v it_o in_o those_o pharisee_n that_o be_v guilty_a of_o the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n quest._n 2._o but_o how_o shall_v a_o simple_a ignorant_a man_n stay_v his_o heart_n and_o be_v settle_v in_o the_o truth_n when_o the_o wise_a and_o learned_a man_n of_o the_o world_n oppose_v it_o how_o can_v he_o tell_v it_o be_v the_o truth_n which_o they_o reject_v who_o have_v more_o learning_n and_o wit_n
