itself_o and_o that_o be_v the_o thing_n which_o we_o have_v to_o examine_v in_o this_o chapter_n in_o plant_n we_o perceive_v that_o beside_o their_o body_n which_o we_o see_v there_o be_v also_o a_o inward_a virtue_n which_o we_o see_v not_o whereby_o they_o live_v grow_v bud_n and_o bear_v fruit_n which_o virtue_n we_o call_v the_o quicken_a soul_n and_o it_o make_v they_o to_o differ_v from_o stone_n and_o metal_n which_o have_v it_o not_o in_o sensitive_a live_a thing_n we_o find_v the_o selfsame_a virtue_n which_o work_v while_o they_o sleep_v and_o be_v after_o a_o sort_n as_o the_o plant_n and_o there_o withal_o we_o find_v another_o certain_a virtue_n or_o power_n which_o see_v hear_v smell_v taste_v and_o feel_v which_o also_o in_o many_o of_o they_o do_v hoard_v up_o the_o thing_n bring_v in_o by_o the_o sense_n which_o manner_n of_o power_n the_o plant_n be_v void_a of_o this_o do_v we_o term_v the_o sensitive_a soul_n because_o the_o effect_n thereof_o be_v discerve_v and_o execute_v by_o the_o sense_n soul_n in_o man_n we_o have_v both_o the_o quicken_n and_o the_o sensitive_a the_o former_a utter_v itself_o in_o the_o nourish_n and_o increase_v of_o he_o and_o the_o latter_a in_o the_o subtlety_n of_o sense_n and_o imagination_n where_o through_o he_o be_v both_o plant_n and_o beast_n together_o but_o yet_o moreover_o we_o see_v also_o a_o mind_n which_o consider_v and_o behold_v which_o reap_v profit_n of_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v bring_v in_o by_o the_o sense_n which_o by_o his_o see_v conceive_v that_o which_o it_o see_v not_o which_o of_o that_o which_o be_v not_o gather_v that_o which_o be_v and_o final_o which_o pull_v a_o man_n away_o both_o from_o earth_n and_o from_o all_o sensible_a thing_n yea_o and_o after_o a_o sort_n from_o himself_o too_o this_o do_v we_o call_v the_o reasonable_a soul_n and_o it_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o make_v man_n to_o be_v man_n and_o not_o a_o plant_n or_o a_o brute_n beast_n as_o the_o other_o two_o do_v and_o also_o to_o be_v the_o image_n or_o rather_o a_o shadow_n of_o the_o godhead_n in_o that_o as_o we_o shall_v say_v hereafter_o it_o be_v a_o spirit_n that_o may_v have_v continuance_n of_o be_v alone_o by_o itself_o without_o the_o body_n and_o by_o the_o way_n whereas_o i_o say_v that_o the_o inward_a man_n have_v a_o quicken_a power_n as_o a_o plant_n have_v a_o sensitive_a power_n as_o a_o beast_n have_v and_o a_o power_n of_o understanding_n whereby_o he_o be_v a_o man_n my_o meaning_n be_v not_o that_o he_o have_v three_o soul_n but_o only_o one_o soul_n that_o be_v to_o wit_n that_o like_o as_o in_o the_o brute_n beast_n the_o sensitive_a soul_n comprehend_v the_o quicken_a soul_n so_o in_o man_n the_o reasonable_a soul_n comprehend_v both_o the_o sensitive_a and_o the_o quicken_n and_o execute_v the_o office_n of_o they_o all_o three_o so_o as_o it_o both_o live_v feel_v and_o reason_v even_o as_o well_o and_o after_o the_o same_o manner_n as_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n may_v intend_v to_o his_o own_o household-matter_n to_o the_o affair_n of_o the_o commonweal_n and_o to_o heavenly_a thing_n all_o at_o once_o or_o to_o speak_v more_o fit_o these_o three_o degree_n of_o soul_n be_v three_o degree_n of_o life_n whereof_o the_o second_o exceed_v and_o contain_v the_o first_o and_o the_o three_o exceed_v and_o contain_v both_o the_o other_o two_o the_o one_o without_o the_o which_o the_o body_n can_v live_v be_v the_o soul_n or_o life_n of_o the_o plant_n and_o be_v so_o tie_v to_o the_o body_n that_o it_o show_v not_o itself_o in_o any_o wise_a out_o of_o it_o the_o second_o which_o can_v live_v without_o the_o body_n be_v the_o soul_n or_o life_n of_o the_o beast_n which_o do_v well_o utter_a forth_o his_o power_n and_o force_v abroad_o but_o yet_o not_o otherwise_o then_o by_o the_o member_n and_o instrument_n of_o the_o body_n whereunto_o it_o be_v tie_v the_o three_o which_o can_v of_o itself_o live_v and_o continue_v without_o the_o body_n but_o not_o the_o body_n without_o it_o be_v the_o soul_n of_o man_n which_o give_v life_n inward_o to_o all_o his_o part_n show_v forth_o his_o life_n abroad_o in_o the_o perceive_n of_o all_o thing_n subject_a to_o sense_n and_o retain_v still_o his_o force_n as_o shall_v be_v say_v hereafter_o yea_o and_o increase_v it_o even_o when_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o body_n and_o the_o very_a liveliness_n of_o the_o sense_n fail_v and_o in_o very_a deed_n you_o shall_v see_v a_o man_n forgo_v all_o his_o sense_n one_o after_o another_o as_o the_o instrument_n of_o they_o decay_n and_o yet_o have_v still_o both_o life_n and_o reason_n unappair_v the_o cause_n whereof_o be_v that_o some_o of_o the_o instrument_n of_o life_n and_o sense_n do_v fail_v but_o the_o life_n itself_o which_o quicken_v they_o fail_v not_o and_o therefore_o the_o beast_n forgo_v not_o life_n in_o lose_v sense_n but_o he_o utter_o forgo_v sense_n in_o forego_v life_n and_o that_o be_v because_o life_n be_v the_o ground_n of_o the_o ability_n of_o sense_n and_o the_o sensitive_a life_n be_v a_o more_o excellent_a life_n than_o the_o quicken_a life_n as_o wherein_o those_o power_n and_o ability_n be_v as_o in_o their_o ●oot_n to_o be_v short_a he_o that_o bereave_v man_n or_o beast_n of_o the_o use_n of_o sense_n or_o man_n of_o the_o right_a use_n of_o reason_n do_v not_o thereby_o bereave_v he_o of_o life_n but_o he_o that_o bereave_v the_o beast_n or_o the_o outward_a man_n of_o their_o life_n do_v therewithal_o bereave_v they_o of_o sense_n and_o reason_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o most_o sure_a argument_n that_o the_o soul_n which_o cause_v a_o beast_n to_o live_v and_o the_o soul_n that_o cause_v it_o to_o have_v sense_n be_v both_o one_o that_o be_v to_o wit_n one_o certain_a kind_n of_o life_n more_o lively_a and_o more_o excellent_a than_o the_o life_n that_o be_v in_o plant_n and_o

likewise_o that_o the_o soul_n which_o cause_v man_n to_o live_v to_o have_v sense_n and_o to_o reason_n be_v but_o one_o that_o be_v to_o wit_n one_o certain_a kind_n of_o life_n more_o excellent_a more_o lively_a and_o of_o further_a reach_n than_o the_o life_n of_o the_o beast_n but_o like_o as_o sense_n be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o form_n or_o self-being_n if_o i_o may_v so_o term_v it_o of_o the_o life_n of_o a_o beast_n so_o be_v reason_n or_o understanding_n the_o very_a form_n and_o self-being_n of_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n and_o to_o speak_v proper_o it_o be_v the_o soul_n or_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n life_n as_o the_o apple_n of_o our_o eye_n be_v the_o very_a eye_n of_o our_o eye_n and_o in_o very_a deed_n when_o the_o mind_n be_v earnest_o occupy_v the_o sense_n be_v at_o a_o stay_n and_o when_o the_o sense_n be_v overbusied_a the_o nourishment_n and_o digestion_n be_v hinder_v and_o contrariwise_o which_o thing_n can_v not_o come_v to_o pass_v if_o the_o soul_n be_v any_o more_o than_o one_o substance_n which_o by_o reason_n that_o it_o be_v but_o one_o can_v utter_v his_o force_n alike_o in_o all_o place_n at_o once_o but_o yield_v the_o less_o care_n one_o where_o so_o long_o as_o it_o be_v earnest_o occupy_v anotherwhere_o in_o this_o soul_n of_o man_n which_o yet_o notwithstanding_o be_v but_o one_o the_o diversity_n of_o the_o power_n and_o ability_n be_v very_o apparent_a the_o quicken_a power_n do_v nourish_v increase_n and_o maintain_v we_o and_o reason_n and_o sense_n meddle_v not_o therewith_o neither_o have_v they_o power_n to_o impeach_v the_o work_n thereof_o the_o truth_n whereof_o appear_v in_o this_o that_o those_o thing_n be_v best_a do_v when_o our_o mind_n be_v at_o rest_n and_o our_o sense_n be_v asleep_a insomuch_o that_o oftentimes_o we_o forge_v the_o sense_n and_o move_v of_o some_o part_n by_o some_o rheum_n or_o some_o palsy_n and_o yet_o the_o same_o part_n cease_v not_o to_o be_v nourish_v still_o also_o the_o sensitive_a life_n see_v and_o perceive_v a_o far_o off_o yea_o oftentimes_o without_o set_v of_o the_o mind_n thereupon_o or_o without_o consider_v what_o the_o sense_n conceive_v some_o man_n which_o have_v but_o weak_a sense_n have_v very_o quick_a understanding_n and_o likewise_o on_o the_o contrary_a part_n again_o some_o fall_n into_o a_o consumption_n which_o want_v not_o the_o perfect_a use_n of_o their_o sense_n sometime_o the_o reasonable_a part_n be_v so_o earnest_o bend_v and_o occupy_v about_o the_o thing_n that_o it_o like_v of_o that_o by_o the_o increase_n of_o itself_o it_o hurt_v and_o diminish_v the_o part_n that_o quicken_v also_o it_o stand_v in_o argument_n against_o the_o sense_n and_o reprove_v they_o of_o falsehood_n and_o conclude_v contrary_a to_o their_o information_n and_o it_o may_v be_v that_o the_o man_n which_o have_v his_o digestion_n perfect_a and_o his_o sense_n sound_a have_v not_o his_o wit_n or_o reason_n sound_n in_o like_o case_n now_o be_v the_o soul_n but_o only_o one_o ability_n it_o can_v not_o be_v so_o but_o now_o be_v the_o same_o divide_v manifest_o into_o wit_n or_o understanding_n and_o will_v the_o one_o serve_v to_o devise_v and_o the_o other_o to_o execute_v for_o we_o understand_v divers_a thing_n which_o we_o will_v not_o and_o we_o will_v divers_a thing_n which_o we_o understand_v not_o which_o contrary_a operation_n can_v be_v attribute_v both_o to_o one_o power_n nevertheless_o the_o unite_n of_o all_o these_o power_n together_o be_v with_o such_o distinctness_n and_o the_o distinguish_n of_o they_o be_v with_o such_o union_n that_o ordinary_o they_o meet_v altogether_o in_o one selfsame_a action_n the_o one_o of_o they_o as_o ready_o by_o all_o likelihood_n as_o the_o other_o howbeit_o that_o every_o of_o they_o do_v his_o own_o work_n several_o by_o himself_o and_o one_o afore_o another_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o their_o object_n thus_o have_v we_o three_o sort_n of_o man_n according_a to_o the_o three_o power_n or_o ability_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n namely_o the_o earthly_a man_n which_o like_o the_o plant_n mind_v nothing_o but_o sleep_v and_o feed_v make_v all_o his_o sense_n and_o all_o his_o reason_n to_o serve_v to_o that_o purpose_n as_o in_o who_o the_o care_n of_o this_o present_a life_n only_o have_v devour_v and_o swallow_v up_o his_o sense_n and_o understanding_n the_o sensual_a man_n as_o s._n paul_n himself_o term_v he_o who_o be_v give_v whole_o to_o these_o sensible_a thing_n imbace_v and_o cast_v down_o his_o reason_n so_o far_o as_o to_o make_v it_o a_o bondslave_n to_o his_o sense_n and_o the_o pleasure_n and_o delight_n thereof_o and_o the_o reasonable_a man_n who_o live_v proper_o in_o spirit_n and_o mind_n who_o enter_v into_o himself_o to_o know_v himself_o and_o go_v out_o of_o himself_o to_o behold_v god_n make_v this_o life_n to_o serve_v to_o the_o attainment_n of_o a_o better_a and_o use_v his_o sense_n but_o as_o instrument_n and_o servant_n of_o his_o reason_n after_o as_o any_o of_o these_o three_o power_n do_v reign_v and_o bear_v sway_n in_o man_n that_o be_v to_o wit_n after_o as_o a_o man_n yield_v himself_o more_o to_o one_o than_o to_o another_o of_o they_o so_o become_v he_o like_o unto_o the_o spirit_n the_o brute_n beast_n or_o plant_n yea_o and_o the_o very_a block_n and_o stone_n but_o it_o be_v our_o disposition_n even_o by_o kind_n to_o be_v carry_v away_o by_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n and_o by_o the_o object_n which_o hem_v we_o in_o on_o all_o side_n but_o as_o for_o against_o our_o nature_n yea_o or_o beyond_o our_o nature_n our_o nature_n be_v not_o able_a to_o do_v any_o thing_n at_o all_o now_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o to_o know_v that_o we_o have_v a_o soul_n whereby_o we_o live_v feel_v and_o understand_v and_o which_o be_v but_o one_o have_v in_o itself_o alone_o so_o many_o sundry_a power_n or_o ability_n for_o it_o will_v be_v demand_v of_o we_o by_o and_o by_o what_o this_o soul_n proper_o be_v and_o sooth_o if_o i_o shall_v say_v i_o can_v tell_v what_o it_o be_v i_o shall_v not_o belie_v myself_o a_o whit_n for_o i_o shall_v but_o confess_v i_o own_o ignorance_n as_o many_o great_a learned_a man_n have_v do_v afore_o i_o and_o i_o shall_v do_v no_o wrong_n at_o all_o to_o the_o soul_n itself_o for_o sith_o we_o can_v deny_v the_o effect_n thereof_o the_o less_o that_o we_o be_v able_a to_o declare_v the_o nature_n and_o be_v thereof_o the_o more_o do_v the_o excellency_n thereof_o shine_v forth_o again_o it_o be_v a_o plain_a case_n that_o no_o thing_n can_v comprehend_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v great_a than_o itself_o now_o our_o soul_n be_v after_o a_o sort_n less_o than_o itself_o in_o as_o much_o as_o it_o be_v wrap_v up_o in_o this_o body_n in_o likewise_o as_o the_o man_n that_o have_v gyves_n and_o fetters_o on_o his_o foot_n be_v after_o a_o sort_n weak_a than_o himself_o nevertheless_o let_v we_o assay_v to_o satisfy_v such_o demand_n as_o well_o as_o we_o can_v and_o for_o as_o much_o as_o it_o be_v the_o image_n of_o god_n not_o only_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o government_n and_o maintenance_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n but_o also_o even_o in_o the_o very_a nature_n thereof_o as_o we_o say_v heretofore_o when_o we_o speak_v of_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n if_o we_o can_v express_v or_o conceive_v what_o it_o be_v let_v we_o at_o leastwise_o be_v certify_v what_o it_o be_v not_o first_o of_o all_o thing_n that_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o body_n be_v not_o both_o one_o thing_n but_o two_o very_o far_o differ_v thing_n and_o also_o that_o the_o soul_n be_v no_o part_n of_o the_o body_n it_o appear_v of_o itself_o without_o further_a proof_n for_o if_o the_o soul_n be_v the_o body_n or_o a_o part_n of_o the_o body_n it_o shall_v grow_v with_o the_o body_n as_o the_o other_o part_n of_o the_o body_n do_v and_o the_o great_a that_o the_o body_n be_v the_o great_a also_o shall_v the_o soul_n be_v nay_o contrary_a wise_a the_o body_n increase_v to_o a_o certain_a age_n and_o then_o stay_v after_o which_o age_n be_v common_o the_o time_n that_o the_o soul_n do_v most_o grow_v and_o those_o that_o be_v strong_a of_o mind_n be_v common_o weak_a of_o body_n and_o the_o soul_n be_v see_v to_o be_v full_a of_o liveliness_n in_o a_o languish_a body_n and_o to_o grow_v the_o more_o in_o force_n by_o the_o decay_n of_o the_o body_n the_o soul_n then_o grow_v not_o with_o the_o body_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o the_o body_n nor_o any_o part_n of_o the_o body_n and_o whereas_o i_o speak_v of_o grow_v in_o the_o soul_n by_o grow_v i_o mean_v the_o profit_v thereof_o in_o power_n and_o virtue_n as_o the_o

body_n or_o at_o leastwise_o to_o be_v utter_o unsubject_a to_o the_o body_n yea_o say_v they_o but_o yet_o we_o see_v man_n forgo_v their_o reason_n as_o fool_n and_o melancholy_n person_n and_o see_v it_o be_v forego_v it_o may_v also_o be_v corrupt_v and_o if_o corrupt_v it_o may_v also_o die_v for_o what_o be_v death_n but_o a_o utter_a and_o full_a corruptness_n nay_o thou_o shall_v say_v rather_o i_o have_v see_v divers_a which_o have_v seem_v to_o have_v lose_v their_o right_a wit_n have_v recover_v they_o again_o by_o good_a diet_n and_o medicinable_a drink_n but_o have_v they_o sort_n trouble_v by_o the_o dim_n of_o the_o spectacle_n and_o by_o the_o smokiness_n of_o the_o imagination_n after_o that_o manner_n the_o sun_n seem_v to_o be_v dim_v and_o eclipse_v and_o that_o be_v but_o by_o the_o come_n of_o the_o moon_n or_o of_o some_o cloud_n between_o he_o and_o we_o for_o in_o his_o light_n there_o be_v no_o abatement_n at_o all_o likewise_o our_o eyesight_n conceive_v thing_n according_a to_o the_o spectacle_n wherethough_o it_o look_v or_o according_a to_o the_o colour_n that_o over_o thwart_v the_o thing_n which_o it_o look_v upon_o take_v away_o the_o impediment_n and_o our_o eye_n shall_v see_v clear_a purge_v away_o the_o humour_n and_o our_o imagination_n shall_v be_v pure_a and_o so_o our_o understand_v shall_v see_v as_o bright_a as_o it_o for_o a_o just_a punishment_n to_o put_v the_o soul_n in_o subjection_n to_o the_o body_n who_o sovereign_a it_o be_v create_v to_o have_v be_v because_o it_o have_v neglect_v the_o will_n of_o the_o creator_n to_o follow_v the_o lust_n and_o like_n of_o the_o body_n this_o appear_v in_o lunatic_n folk_n and_o such_o other_o which_o have_v their_o wit_n trouble_v at_o time_n and_o by_o fit_n for_o they_o be_v not_o vex_v but_o at_o the_o stir_n of_o their_o humour_n be_v at_o other_o time_n sober_a and_o well_o enough_o stay_v in_o their_o wit_n the_o like_a be_v see_v in_o they_o that_o have_v the_o fall_a sickness_n for_o their_o understanding_n seem_v to_o be_v eclipse_v and_o as_o it_o be_v strike_v with_o a_o thunderclap_n during_o the_o time_n of_o their_o fit_n but_o afterward_o they_o be_v as_o discreet_a as_o though_o they_o ail_v nothing_o to_o be_v short_a the_o body_n be_v subject_a to_o a_o thousand_o disease_n wherewith_o we_o see_v the_o understanding_n to_o be_v no_o whit_n alter_v because_o they_o touch_v not_o the_o instrument_n of_o the_o sense_n and_o of_o the_o imagination_n which_o move_v the_o understanding_n trouble_a it_o be_v in_o deed_n by_o those_o few_o thing_n only_o which_o infect_v the_o sense_n and_o the_o imagination_n which_o by_o that_o mean_n report_v the_o thing_n unfaithful_o whereon_o the_o mind_n debate_v therefore_o you_o shall_v never_o see_v anybody_o out_o of_o his_o wit_n or_o out_o of_o his_o right_a mind_n in_o who_o the_o physician_n may_v not_o manifest_o perceive_v either_o some_o default_n of_o the_o instrument_n as_o a_o misshape_a and_o misportioned_a head_n or_o else_o a_o overabound_n of_o some_o melancholic_a humour_n that_o trouble_v and_o mar_v his_o body_n afore_o it_o trouble_v or_o impair_v his_o mind_n and_o like_v as_o the_o wise_a man_n be_v deceive_v by_o false_a spy_n do_v make_v wrong_a deliberation_n howbeit_o yet_o ground_v upon_o good_a reason_n which_o thing_n they_o can_v not_o do_v
