A40705 The case of the times discuss'd being a serious exercitation of two cases grounded upon Romans 13, vers. 1,2,3,4,5 : First, how far we are bound to obey, when we are not satisfied that the laws are for our good, 2nd, whether subjection more than not to resist powers : to which is added some remarks upon a late book entituled The Protestant reconciler / by Fr. god_n 6._o six_o this_o argument_n be_v repugnant_a to_o the_o very_a nature_n and_o end_n of_o all_o law_n and_o government_n be_v it_o ever_o the_o intention_n or_o reason_n of_o a_o law_n either_o negative_a or_o positive_a that_o it_o shall_v not_o or_o need_v not_o be_v observe_v yea_o the_o very_a threat_n and_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n that_o we_o pretend_v to_o submit_v unto_o intend_v we_o shall_v fulfil_v the_o law_n and_o not_o suffer_v the_o punishment_n and_o for_o that_o very_a purpose_n they_o be_v annex_v to_o the_o law_n and_o to_o the_o same_o purpose_n be_v the_o reward_n of_o obedience_n propose_v in_o a_o law_n and_o the_o minister_n of_o it_o be_v send_v for_o the_o punishment_n of_o evil_a doer_n and_o the_o praise_n of_o those_o that_o do_v well_o that_o be_v those_z that_o perform_v what_o the_o law_n account_v well_o and_o avoid_v what_o the_o law_n reckone_v evil-doing_a or_o disobedience_n and_o as_o this_o be_v the_o end_n of_o the_o sanction_n of_o the_o law_n in_o the_o threat_n and_o promise_n so_o it_o be_v the_o very_a reason_n of_o the_o preceptive_a part_n or_o the_o command_n itself_o thus_o when_o god_n himself_o give_v forth_o his_o own_o law_n his_o first_o and_o chief_a intention_n be_v that_o man_n shall_v obey_v those_o law_n by_o do_v what_o he_o require_v and_o not_o do_v what_o he_o forbid_v therein_o and_o certain_o not_o only_a by_o not_o resist_v he_o in_o this_o strict_a sense_n of_o resistance_n the_o argument_n insist_o upon_o and_o thus_o doubtless_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n after_o his_o example_n in_o all_o their_o law_n intend_v primary_o to_o have_v they_o observe_v and_o god_n that_o enjoin_v our_o subjection_n to_o they_o require_v that_o we_o obey_v they_o as_o his_o minister_n in_o the_o same_o method_n that_o he_o require_v obedience_n to_o himself_o that_o be_v by_o do_v what_o their_o law_n require_v and_o not_o only_o by_o not_o resist_v or_o rebel_n against_o they_o 7._o the_o argument_n also_o prevent_v or_o frustrate_v the_o great_a use_n and_o benefit_n of_o all_o government_n that_o be_v as_o the_o apostle_n note_n the_o public_a good_n he_o be_v the_o minister_n to_o we_o for_o good_n but_o now_o suppose_v we_o shall_v do_v all_o the_o evil_a that_o be_v forbid_v in_o the_o law_n &_o neglect_v to_o do_v all_o the_o good_a towards_o god_n the_o king_n our_o neighbour_n and_o our_o self_n that_o the_o law_n require_v only_o we_o do_v not_o resist_v authority_n what_o good_a do_v you_o think_v shall_v we_o reap_v from_o god_n ministry_n will_v nonresistance_n only_o will_v that_o secure_v we_o from_o all_o that_o evil_n and_o compensate_a for_o all_o that_o good_a it_o be_v beyond_o the_o sphere_n of_o imagination_n 8._o but_o to_o put_v the_o matter_n quite_o out_o of_o countenance_n the_o apostle_n have_v sufficient_o explain_v himself_o in_o the_o very_a text._n and_o we_o be_v assure_v from_o his_o own_o word_n that_o he_o require_v more_o by_o subjection_n than_o this_o nonresistance_n for_o he_o have_v give_v some_o plain_a instance_n even_o of_o active_a obedience_n and_o they_o be_v prescribe_v also_o as_o part_n of_o that_o subjection_n which_o he_o oblige_v we_o unto_o wherefore_o say_v he_o we_o must_v needs_o be_v subject_a for_o this_o cause_n pay_v you_o tribute_n also_o yea_o render_v to_o all_o their_o due_n especial_o to_o authority_n trihute_v custom_n fear_v honour_n and_o owe_v no_o man_n especial_o to_o authority_n tribute_n custom_n fear_v honour_n and_o owe_v no_o man_n any_o thing_n and_o write_v with_o more_o exactness_n sobriety_n and_o strength_n than_o any_o that_o i_o have_v meet_v with_o upon_o that_o argument_n in_o this_o book_n i_o find_v some_o passage_n let_v fall_n by_o the_o by_o that_o be_v pertinent_a to_o my_o purpose_n and_o of_o present_a use_n and_o advantage_n to_o both_o side_n these_o we_o shall_v take_v notice_n of_o but_o for_o the_o main_a drift_n and_o therefore_o wonder_n say_v he_o at_o the_o wickedness_n and_o injustice_n of_o those_o man_n who_o clamour_n so_o much_o against_o they_o because_o such_o condescension_n be_v not_o immediate_o make_v i._n e._n because_o they_o do_v not_o change_v the_o law_n which_o it_o be_v not_o in_o their_o power_n to_o do_v p._n 9_o 2._o yea_o as_o the_o conformist_n can_v condescend_v to_o the_o dissenter_n by_o alter_a the_o law_n so_o neither_o can_v he_o meet_v he_o in_o the_o abatement_n of_o his_o conformity_n according_a to_o they_o without_o breach_n of_o his_o duty_n and_o become_v a_o dissenter_n himself_o and_o a_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n yea_o a_o violator_n of_o his_o engagement_n promise_n and_o oath_n and_o if_o this_o sentence_n be_v true_a what_o will_v our_o dissent_v brethren_n have_v we_o to_o do_v the_o case_n be_v plain_a if_o the_o thing_n require_v be_v not_o sinful_a they_o may_v and_o ought_v to_o come_v to_o we_o but_o we_o can_v there_o be_v a_o great_a gulf_n fix_v i_o say_v we_o can_v come_v to_o they_o certain_o in_o our_o present_a circumstance_n this_o be_v worthy_a their_o sad_a meditation_n 3._o hence_o give_v i_o leave_v to_o observe_v that_o suppose_v as_o our_o late_a plea_n for_o condescension_n do_v suppose_v that_o the_o thing_n require_v be_v indifferent_a though_o unnecessary_a the_o face_n of_o the_o controversy_n seem_v to_o look_v otherwise_o than_o it_o do_v heretofore_o for_o indeed_o the_o great_a argument_n betwixt_o we_o be_v quite_o invert_v before_o it_o be_v thus_o on_o their_o side_n when_o the_o pretence_n be_v that_o they_o can_v not_o have_v communion_n with_o we_o without_o sin_n you_o acknowledge_v the_o thing_n in_o controversy_n be_v in_o themselves_o indifferent_a &_o alterable_a we_o believe_v they_o be_v sinful_a therefore_o we_o can_v ascend_v to_o you_o but_o you_o may_v and_o ought_v to_o condescend_v to_o we_o and_o remove_v the_o difference_n but_o now_o it_o be_v quite_o otherwise_o on_o the_o conformist_n side_n he_o now_o plead_v you_o acknowledge_v the_o matter_n strike_v at_o to_o be_v indifferent_a though_o you_o like_v they_o not_o we_o say_v though_o they_o be_v so_o in_o themselves_o yet_o the_o use_n of_o they_o be_v by_o the_o law_n etc._n etc._n make_v necessary_a you_o may_v come_v to_o we_o without_o sin_n we_o can_v without_o sin_n come_v to_o you._n let_v the_o fault_n the_o breach_n the_o schism_n and_o all_o the_o dread_a consequence_n of_o it_o and_o fear_n attend_v it_o be_v lay_v no_o more_o at_o the_o conformist_n door_n 4._o to_o conclude_v let_v i_o beseech_v the_o protestant-reconciler_n serious_o to_o reflect_v upon_o his_o late_a book_n and_o consider_v whether_o he_o have_v pursue_v the_o true_a point_n whereon_o our_o present_a duty_n and_o peace_n and_o safety_n depend_v he_o have_v very_o industrous_o labour_v to_o lay_v ground_n for_o a_o happy_a accommodation_n when_o we_o shall_v have_v a_o parliament_n and_o convocation_n but_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n where_o be_v we_o our_o condition_n be_v deplorable_a but_o what_o be_v the_o present_a remedy_n will_v not_o half_o this_o pain_n have_v be_v better_o bestow_v to_o persuade_v dissenter_n that_o union_n submission_n to_o authority_n and_o the_o do_v of_o our_o duty_n be_v always_o necessary_a and_o that_o we_o be_v bind_v in_o conscience_n to_o attend_v god_n public_a worship_n among_o we_o establish_v by_o law_n seeing_z there_o be_v nothing_o there_o require_v but_o what_o we_o may_v lawful_o practice_n and_o that_o this_o be_v the_o only_a probable_a mean_n in_o reason_n policy_n and_o divinity_n to_o scatter_v our_o fear_n defeat_v our_o enemy_n and_o secure_v we_o from_o destruction_n especial_o consider_v we_o know_v not_o certain_o when_o we_o shall_v have_v a_o parliament_n and_o we_o know_v less_o whether_o when_o we_o have_v a_o parliament_n they_o will_v see_v reason_n in_o all_o that_o he_o have_v say_v to_o alter_v the_o law_n for_o their_o satisfaction_n and_o last_o that_o the_o question_n what_o the_o king_n and_o parliament_n ought_v to_o impose_v do_v not_o so_o much_o concern_v we_o as_o what_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o do_v 5._o yet_o i_o must_v not_o charge_v this_o our_o reconciler_n with_o a_o total_a omission_n of_o that_o necessary_a point_n i_o have_v note_v something_o already_o and_o in_o his_o pag._n 58_o 59_o we_o find_v he_o ask_v some_o pious_a seasonable_a and_o argumentative_a question_n of_o our_o dissent_v brethren_n which_o i_o hearty_o pray_v they_o will_v serious_o weigh_v and_o then_o answer_v not_o in_o word_n but_o in_o deed_n and_o in_o truth_n thus_o he_o accost_v they_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o his_o many_o argument_n on_o their_o behalf_n here_o let_v it_o be_v note_v say_v he_o that_o those_o argument_n propound_v from_o the_o example_n and_o say_n of_o our_o saviour_n against_o the_o impose_v of_o indifferent_a thing_n i_o say_v these_o argument_n fall_v many_o of_o they_o with_o more_o weight_n on_o the_o dissenter_n provide_v they_o can_v show_v no_o law_n of_o god_n plain_o forbid_v their_o submission_n to_o these_o thing_n for_o let_v i_o ask_v they_o in_o the_o spirit_n of_o meekness_n these_o few_o question_n do_v they_o prefer_v mercy_n before_o sacrifice_n who_o will_v not_o submit_v to_o rite_n and_o circumstance_n or_o to_o the_o use_n of_o thing_n no_o where_n forbid_v in_o the_o word_n to_o prevent_v schism_n and_o all_o the_o dreadful_a consequence_n of_o it_o but_o rather_o will_v cause_v their_o superior_n to_o judge_v they_o scandalous_a resister_n of_o authority_n and_o pertinatious_a disturber_n of_o the_o church_n peace_n be_v they_o compassionate_a towards_o the_o sheep_n according_a to_o our_o lord_n example_n who_o rather_o will_v refuse_v to_o become_v labourer_n in_o the_o harvest_n than_o suhmit_v to_o these_o little_a thing_n in_o order_n to_o their_o regular_a performance_n of_o this_o bless_a work_n do_v they_o not_o scandalize_v and_o contribute_v unto_o the_o ruin_n of_o christ_n little_a one_o who_o do_v involve_v they_o in_o a_o wretched_a schism_n on_o the_o account_n of_o thing_n which_o they_o may_v lawful_o submit_v unto_o do_v they_o not_o shut_v up_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n against_o man_n who_o forbid_v they_o to_o enter_v in_o when_o they_o may_v do_v they_o not_o impose_v heavy_a burden_n also_o who_o say_v to_o their_o disciple_n hear_v not_o the_o common_a prayer_n receive_v not_o the_o sacrament_n kneel_v suffer_v not_o your_o child_n to_o be_v sign_v with_o the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n communicate_v not_o with_o that_o minister_n who_o wear_v a_o surplice_n or_o with_o the_o church_n which_o impose_v any_o ceremony_n or_o any_o constitution_n but_o concern_v the_o time_n
