and_o practice_n since_o they_o have_v be_v inform_v by_o great_a and_o good_a authority_n what_o the_o nature_n and_o evil_a tendency_n of_o these_o thing_n be_v no_o by_o no_o mean_n they_o will_v retain_v all_o these_o doctrine_n and_o practice_n still_o but_o will_v renounce_v and_o abhor_v all_o that_o evil_a which_o protestant_n charge_v they_o with_o they_o will_v pray_v to_o saint_n and_o and_o this_o make_v it_o a_o false_a character_n to_o this_o the_o protester_n answer_v p._n 20._o this_o be_v a_o pretty_a speculative_a quarrel_n i_o confess_v and_o may_v deserve_o find_v room_n here_o be_v it_o our_o business_n to_o consider_v the_o due_a method_n of_o misrepresentation_n in_o the_o abstract_n but_o as_o our_o present_a concern_n stand_v here_o be_v a_o quaint_a conceit_n we_o worship_v they_o for_o god_n sake_n it_o be_v a_o honour_n to_o god_n by_o interpretation_n and_o consequence_n as_o we_o intend_v it_o for_o god_n honour_n or_o as_o god_n be_v please_v to_o terminate_v on_o god_n sect_n iv._o invocation_n of_o saint_n there_o be_v two_o great_a opinion_n against_o that_o worship_n which_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n give_v to_o saint_n depart_v who_o now_o reign_n with_o christ_n in_o heaven_n as_o the_o council_n of_o trent_n teach_v 1._o that_o it_o be_v to_o give_v they_o that_o religious_a worship_n which_o be_v due_a only_a to_o god_n 2._o live_v while_o as_o yet_o on_o earth_n p._n 4._o now_o not_o to_o ask_v how_o he_o come_v so_o exact_o to_o know_v where_o hell_n be_v and_o that_o it_o be_v at_o a_o great_a distance_n from_o heaven_n than_o the_o earth_n be_v if_o there_o be_v any_o force_n in_o this_o argument_n it_o must_v prove_v that_o the_o saint_n have_v a_o natural_a knowledge_n of_o our_o prayer_n though_o at_o so_o great_a a_o distance_n from_o we_o as_o heaven_n be_v that_o they_o see_v and_o hear_v we_o as_o abraham_n do_v dives_n though_o we_o can_v see_v and_o hear_v they_o as_o dives_n do_v abraham_n which_o may_v have_v satisfy_v he_o since_o he_o think_v fit_a to_o reason_n from_o parable_n that_o whatsoever_o distance_n there_o be_v between_o heaven_n and_o hell_n there_o be_v a_o great_a prove_v that_o saint_n know_v and_o hear_v our_o prayer_n by_o their_o own_o natural_a power_n thus_o he_o add_v that_o the_o very_a devil_n hear_v those_o desperate_a wretch_n who_o call_v on_o they_o and_o why_o then_o shall_v he_o doubt_v that_o saint_n want_v this_o privilege_n in_o some_o manner_n grant_v to_o sinful_a man_n and_o wicked_a spirit_n but_o though_o he_o call_v this_o a_o they_o worship_n but_o how_o unreasonable_a be_v this_o when_o they_o know_v he_o be_v invisible_a and_o will_v not_o be_v a_o god_n if_o he_o can_v be_v see_v and_o how_o absurd_a be_v it_o to_o represent_v he_o by_o a_o image_n when_o they_o know_v they_o can_v make_v no_o image_n like_o he_o no_o worship_n can_v be_v natural_a which_o contradict_v the_o nature_n of_o that_o be_v who_o we_o worship_v and_o if_o it_o be_v not_o natural_a it_o must_v be_v institute_v worship_n and_o then_o though_o it_o be_v forbid_v by_o no_o law_n it_o must_v be_v command_v by_o some_o law_n to_o make_v our_o curiosity_n but_o of_o what_o use_n be_v it_o in_o the_o christian_a religion_n to_o remember_v christ_n be_v not_o to_o remember_v his_o face_n which_o we_o never_o see_v but_o to_o remember_v his_o doctrine_n and_o his_o life_n to_o call_v to_o mind_v his_o great_a love_n in_o die_v for_o we_o to_o remember_v he_o not_o as_o a_o man_n but_o as_o a_o god_n incarnate_a as_o our_o mediator_n and_o advocate_n as_o our_o lord_n and_o judge_n and_o therefore_o the_o gospel_n which_o contain_v the_o history_n of_o his_o life_n be_v a_o much_o better_a picture_n of_o christ_n than_o any_o indeed_o of_o a_o lovely_a picture_n may_v exciâ—e_v a_o sensible_a passion_n but_o not_o a_o divine_a love_n the_o sight_n of_o his_o picture_n can_v only_o put_v we_o in_o mind_n that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o person_n as_o christ_n in_o the_o world_n but_o if_o we_o will_v affect_v our_o heart_n with_o his_o love_n and_o praise_n we_o must_v not_o gaze_v on_o his_o face_n which_o be_v all_o that_o a_o picture_n can_v show_v we_o if_o it_o can_v do_v that_o 〈◊〉_d meditate_v on_o what_o he_o have_v do_v and_o suffer_v for_o we_o which_o may_v be_v do_v better_a without_o a_o picture_n
