apostate_n what_o be_v the_o reason_n so_o many_o be_v so_o fruitless_a in_o their_o life_n what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o man_n despair_v in_o death_n but_o even_o this_o because_o man_n be_v not_o build_v and_o establish_v aright_o god_n spirit_n never_o establish_v their_o soul_n in_o divine_a truth_n for_o first_o concern_v apostasy_n ask_v they_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n they_o be_v of_o this_o or_o that_o religion_n they_o will_v say_v they_o have_v be_v teach_v so_o they_o have_v be_v bring_v up_o to_o it_o the_o company_n with_o who_o they_o have_v converse_v have_v be_v devout_a man_n and_o have_v be_v always_o lead_v with_o this_o opinion_n and_o they_o see_v no_o reason_n to_o thwart_v it_o be_v that_o all_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n wrought_v these_o thing_n in_o thy_o heart_n have_v he_o not_o give_v thou_o a_o taste_n of_o they_o have_v he_o not_o convince_v thou_o in_o thy_o judgement_n that_o it_o be_v so_o have_v thou_o not_o find_v the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n work_v upon_o thy_o soul_n change_v of_o thou_o raise_v of_o thou_o draw_v of_o thou_o out_o of_o the_o world_n near_o to_o god_n have_v thou_o not_o i_o say_v feel_v the_o power_n whatsoever_o be_v not_o spiritual_a whatsoever_o knowledge_n be_v not_o divine_a and_o from_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n never_o hold_v out_o therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o you_o have_v many_o illiterate_a man_n that_o set_v upon_o the_o truth_n and_o hold_v out_o to_o the_o end_n and_o on_o the_o contrary_a many_o great_a seem_a scholar_n that_o be_v skilful_a in_o school-learning_n and_o in_o other_o author_n do_v not_o the_o reason_n be_v the_o one_o have_v the_o truth_n from_o the_o spirit_n discover_v all_o the_o objection_n that_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n can_v make_v against_o it_o and_o the_o strength_n that_o be_v in_o the_o truth_n to_o answer_v and_o silence_v all_o those_o objection_n the_o other_o man_n have_v only_o a_o discourse_a knowledge_n a_o ability_n to_o gather_v one_o thing_n from_o another_o and_o to_o prove_v one_o thing_n by_o another_o by_o strength_n of_o part_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n never_o discover_v the_o sleight_n and_o the_o corruption_n of_o his_o heart_n never_o fasten_v and_o settle_v his_o heart_n upon_o the_o truth_n he_o never_o have_v experience_n of_o the_o truth_n for_o indeed_o nothing_o do_v establish_v so_o much_o as_o the_o experience_n of_o the_o truth_n on_o which_o we_o be_v establish_v again_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o that_o unfruitfulnesse_n that_o be_v among_o man_n unfruitfulnesse_n but_o because_o truth_n be_v never_o settle_v in_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o which_o man_n know_v out_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n concern_v christ_n and_o the_o privilege_n by_o he_o they_o be_v never_o persuade_v of_o it_o in_o their_o heart_n therefore_o they_o come_v not_o to_o a_o fruitful_a conversation_n it_o be_v impossible_a but_o that_o man_n shall_v be_v abundant_o fruitful_a that_o have_v spiritual_a apprehension_n of_o divine_a thing_n of_o evangelical_n truth_n hence_o come_v all_o our_o unthankfulness_n and_o undervalue_v of_o the_o gospel_n the_o gospel_n of_o itself_o be_v a_o unprized_a thing_n however_o we_o esteem_v of_o it_o god_n value_v it_o high_o we_o value_v it_o not_o because_o our_o apprehension_n of_o it_o be_v customary_a and_o formal_a get_v by_o breed_v and_o education_n and_o discourse_n and_o not_o by_o the_o spirit_n we_o feel_v not_o the_o spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a comfort_n of_o those_o truth_n we_o think_v we_o know_v how_o come_v likewise_o despair_n in_o time_n of_o temptation_n and_o in_o death_n but_o despair_n only_o because_o man_n want_v this_o stablish_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n man_n go_v on_o in_o evil_a course_n trust_v to_o a_o formal_a dead_a humane_a knowledge_n get_v by_o humane_a mean_n and_o not_o settle_v in_o they_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o have_v not_o seal_v the_o truth_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o hereupon_o when_o sharp_a trial_n come_v they_o despair_v because_o they_o have_v no_o feel_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o so_o when_o conscience_n be_v awaken_v and_o smart_v it_o clamour_n and_o cry_n out_o upon_o all_o their_o formal_a and_o humane_a knowledge_n for_o they_o have_v not_o a_o spiritual_a sense_n of_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n and_o the_o persuasion_n of_o comfort_n be_v not_o so_o near_o to_o support_v the_o soul_n as_o the_o tentation_n and_o vexation_n and_o torment_n be_v how_o can_v they_o but_o despair_n now_o who_o can_v still_o the_o conscience_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n why_o now_o if_o the_o knowledge_n that_o man_n have_v be_v spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a in_o all_o accusation_n of_o conscience_n it_o will_v set_v conscience_n down_o and_o still_o it_o i_o be_o a_o sinner_n indeed_o i_o be_o this_o and_o this_o but_o i_o have_v feel_v the_o sweet_a mercy_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n god_n have_v say_v to_o my_o soul_n i_o be_o thy_o salvation_n he_o have_v intimate_v to_o my_o spirit_n by_o a_o sweet_a voice_n son_n thy_o sin_n be_v forgive_v thou_o where_o there_o be_v i_o say_v a_o knowledge_n and_o a_o apprehension_n of_o these_o evangelical_n truth_n wrought_v by_o the_o spirit_n it_o set_v down_o conscience_n and_o still_v it_o though_o the_o heart_n rage_n at_o the_o same_o time_n there_o be_v thousand_o in_o the_o very_a bosom_n of_o the_o church_n that_o miscarry_v because_o of_o this_o rest_v in_o a_o literal_a outward_a formal_a knowledge_n get_v only_o by_o discourse_n and_o by_o read_v and_o commerce_n with_o other_o and_o never_o labour_v to_o have_v their_o heart_n establish_v in_o christ_n by_o god_n spirit_n you_o see_v here_o then_o a_o
which_o i_o observe_v the_o rather_o because_o i_o will_v raise_v your_o heart_n to_o hate_v unbelief_n and_o distrust_n exceed_o because_o god_n labour_v to_o undermine_v it_o by_o all_o mean_v possible_a wherefore_o do_v he_o use_v so_o many_o term_n here_o of_o seal_v anoint_v and_o earnest_a with_o word_n and_o sacrament_n and_o all_o whatsoever_o may_v confirm_v you_o the_o holy_a ghost_n apply_v it_o to_o we_o all_o this_o be_v that_o we_o may_v not_o doubt_v of_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o when_o we_o find_v any_o goodness_n in_o we_o let_v we_o account_v that_o to_o give_v false_a witness_n against_o ourselves_o be_v a_o horrible_a sin_n it_o be_v to_o make_v god_n a_o liar_n god_n stand_v upon_o his_o credit_n and_o therefore_o take_v heed_n what_o we_o say_v special_o if_o we_o have_v find_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n in_o former_a time_n any_o earnest_a that_o we_o have_v no_o grace_n god_n do_v this_o for_o our_o assurance_n all_o his_o deal_n of_o word_n and_o sacrament_n of_o earnest_a and_o oath_n and_o all_o that_o may_v be_v to_o assure_v we_o and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v not_o cross_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n so_o as_o to_o they_o false_a find_v he_o upon_o purgatory_n and_o merit_n and_o the_o foundation_n they_o have_v of_o a_o christian_a soul_n be_v uncertain_a and_o therefore_o they_o may_v well_o teach_v doubt_v it_o suit_v with_o the_o course_n that_o they_o take_v but_o i_o say_v it_o be_v very_o corrupt_a for_o god_n use_v all_o mean_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o doubt_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v idle_o object_v god_n for_o his_o part_n will_v but_o for_o our_o part_n we_o have_v reason_n to_o doubt_v why_o he_o in_o all_o thing_n stoop_v to_o we_o he_o labour_v to_o secure_v we_o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n he_o do_v his_o part_n and_o we_o too_o but_o i_o hasten_v to_o that_o which_o follow_v because_o i_o will_v end_v with_o the_o time_n to_o touch_v that_o a_o little_a distinct_o by_o itself_o that_o the_o spirit_n do_v all_o the_o earnest_a of_o the_o spirit_n for_o indeed_o though_o spirit_n be_v not_o add_v to_o stablish_v yet_o the_o spirit_n stablish_v by_o christ_n and_o the_o spirit_n it_o anoint_v and_o the_o spirit_n seal_v to_o the_o day_n of_o redemption_n and_o the_o earnest_a of_o the_o spirit_n so_o it_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v all_o here_o you_o have_v the_o three_o person_n in_o the_o trinity_n we_o have_v three_o grand_a enemy_n the_o world_n the_o flesh_n and_o satan_n now_o here_o be_v the_o three_o person_n in_o the_o conscience_n and_o that_o which_o must_v quiet_v the_o spirit_n must_v be_v such_o a_o spirit_n as_o be_v above_o our_o spirit_n this_o be_v excellent_o set_v down_o in_o this_o epistle_n in_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v in_o the_o breast_n of_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n and_o he_o know_v our_o spirit_n better_a than_o we_o know_v our_o own_o spirit_n he_o search_v he_o be_v a_o searcher_n as_o the_o word_n be_v in_o the_o original_n the_o spirit_n be_v a_o searcher_n he_o search_v our_o own_o heart_n and_o he_o search_v the_o secret_a love_n of_o god_n to_o we_o that_o be_v the_o spirit_n must_v establish_v we_o well_o then_o if_o the_o spirit_n do_v all_o how_o shall_v we_o know_v then_o that_o we_o have_v spirit_n this_o spirit_n a_o note_n or_o two_o and_o so_o go_v the_o spirit_n motion_n even_o as_o in_o our_o soul_n how_o may_v a_o man_n know_v that_o he_o have_v a_o soul_n by_o live_n and_o move_v by_o action_n vital_a etc._n etc._n so_o we_o may_v know_v a_o man_n have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n by_o those_o action_n that_o come_v only_o from_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v to_o
and_o deliver_v he_o from_o go_v to_o the_o pit_n i_o have_v find_v a_o ransom_n etc._n etc._n the_o messenger_n one_o of_o a_o thousand_o the_o man_n of_o god_n that_o have_v the_o tongue_n of_o the_o learned_a he_o have_v show_v he_o where_o his_o ransom_n be_v to_o be_v have_v he_o have_v show_v he_o his_o righteousness_n thus_o do_v s._n peter_n after_o he_o have_v bring_v they_o to_o cant._n 2._o they_o refresh_v they_o with_o apple_n and_o wine_n with_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n they_o be_v ready_a to_o support_v and_o comfort_v they_o in_o all_o their_o spiritual_a fall_n when_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o sink_v we_o see_v by_o experience_n in_o all_o place_n where_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n be_v establish_v how_o comfortable_o people_n live_v and_o die_v and_o end_v their_o day_n above_o other_o people_n that_o sit_v in_o darkness_n and_o in_o the_o shadow_n of_o death_n so_o we_o see_v this_o be_v true_a that_o the_o minister_n help_v joy_n because_o they_o help_v that_o that_o breed_v joy_n not_o only_o at_o the_o first_o but_o continual_o help_v the_o joy_n of_o the_o people_n of_o god_n even_o to_o death_n and_o then_o in_o death_n itself_o the_o end_n of_o the_o ministry_n be_v to_o help_v joy_n to_o help_v death_n they_o to_o heaven_n to_o help_v they_o to_o a_o joyful_a departure_n hence_o to_o give_v they_o a_o
