god_n simple_a act_n it_o necessary_o enforce_v the_o observation_n of_o that_o very_a seven_o day_n from_o the_o creation_n after_o god_n example_n but_o if_o we_o draw_v it_o from_o the_o consequent_a of_o his_o rest_n the_o advancing_z and_o honour_v of_o that_o day_n thereby_o it_o bind_v we_o as_o well_o to_o the_o observation_n of_o the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n now_o as_o it_o do_v the_o jew_n to_o the_o observation_n of_o the_o seven_o day_n heretofore_o those_o that_o oppose_v the_o morality_n of_o the_o sabbath_n labour_v to_o draw_v the_o reason_n which_o be_v lay_v down_o in_o this_o four_o commandment_n for_o the_o observe_n of_o this_o day_n of_o rest_n sabbath_n we_o can_v make_v god_n act_n of_o rest_v the_o ground_n of_o institute_v the_o sabbath_n from_o god_n bare_a act_n of_o rest_v himself_o upon_o that_o day_n which_o if_o they_o do_v they_o must_v form_v their_o argument_n in_o this_o manner_n that_o day_n in_o which_o god_n himself_o rest_v from_o his_o work_n he_o appoint_v to_o be_v a_o day_n of_o man_n rest_v from_o their_o work_n but_o that_o be_v the_o seven_o or_o last_o day_n of_o the_o week_n therefore_o god_n ordain_v that_o to_o be_v the_o day_n on_o which_o man_n shall_v rest_v from_o their_o work_n now_o against_o the_o argument_n frame_v in_o this_o manner_n there_o lie_v two_o main_a exception_n commandment_n 1._o god_n example_n be_v not_o the_o ground_n of_o any_o commandment_n the_o first_o of_o they_o be_v the_o example_n of_o god_n neither_o be_v nor_o can_v be_v any_o warrant_n to_o we_o to_o do_v the_o like_a neither_o do_v we_o ever_o find_v it_o propose_v unto_o we_o as_o a_o rule_n which_o we_o must_v follow_v this_o be_v true_a that_o god_n or_o christ_n example_n be_v be_v set_v before_o accompany_v that_o act_n may_v be_v a_o occasion_n of_o a_o institution_n perhaps_o to_o this_o some_o may_v reply_v objection_n 23_o that_o in_o this_o four_o commandment_n we_o have_v first_o a_o law_n give_v in_o these_o word_n it_o we_o have_v the_o precept_n first_o and_o then_o god_n example_n to_o encourage_v we_o to_o observe_v it_o the_o seven_o day_n be_v the_o sabbath_n of_o the_o concern_v the_o three_o branch_n without_z which_o the_o law_n itself_o be_v not_o perfect_a that_o be_v which_o day_n of_o the_o week_n shall_v be_v the_o day_n of_o that_o rest_n be_v not_o express_v as_o we_o have_v partly_o already_o show_v in_o open_v the_o explication_n of_o this_o commandment_n but_o only_o in_o the_o reason_n annex_v unto_o this_o law_n unless_o therefore_o it_o can_v be_v prove_v that_o the_o term_n seven_o mention_v in_o the_o explication_n of_o this_o commandment_n signify_v the_o last_o day_n of_o seven_o we_o have_v no_o law_n precedent_n to_o god_n example_n here_o mention_v that_o command_v the_o observation_n of_o the_o last_o day_n of_o the_o week_n for_o the_o day_n of_o rest_n day_n as_o have_v be_v show_v already_o that_o seven_o in_o the_o explication_n of_o the_o commandment_n note_v not_o the_o particular_a day_n now_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o reason_n allege_v to_o prove_v that_o this_o term_n seven_o use_v in_o the_o explication_n of_o this_o law_n signify_v the_o last_o day_n of_o the_o week_n we_o have_v show_v already_o and_o by_o one_o reason_n have_v make_v it_o more_o than_o probable_a that_o this_o term_n seven_o in_o that_o place_n signify_v only_o indefinite_o one_o of_o seven_o and_o not_o particular_o such_o a_o certain_a day_n of_o the_o seven_o the_o second_o reason_n which_o far_a manifest_v that_o truth_n and_o make_v it_o evident_a commandment_n and_o be_v further_o prove_v because_o god_n mention_n it_o not_o at_o all_o in_o the_o conclusion_n of_o the_o commandment_n we_o have_v defer_v until_o now_o and_o it_o be_v this_o if_o god_n have_v intend_v to_o command_v that_o the_o last_o day_n of_o the_o week_n shall_v be_v observe_v for_o the_o sabbath_n he_o must_v and_o will_v have_v mention_v it_o in_o the_o conclusion_n of_o that_o reason_n by_o which_o he_o show_v we_o the_o equity_n of_o the_o observation_n of_o that_o day_n rather_o than_o any_o other_o now_o he_o be_v so_o far_o from_o do_v that_o that_o he_o forbear_v the_o mention_v of_o that_o name_n of_o seven_o in_o the_o conclusion_n at_o all_o that_o this_o which_o we_o allege_v may_v have_v the_o great_a and_o mercy_n of_o god_n to_o man_n be_v to_o be_v remember_v there_o be_v in_o a_o sort_n a_o necessity_n of_o change_v the_o day_n of_o rest_n from_o the_o last_o to_o the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n on_o which_o man_n redemption_n be_v to_o be_v perfect_v and_o consequent_o it_o be_v fit_a that_o the_o law_n give_v to_o man_n fall_v and_o to_o be_v redeem_v shall_v be_v so_o pen_v in_o general_a term_n that_o when_o this_o glorious_a work_n of_o man_n redemption_n shall_v be_v perfect_v there_o may_v be_v a_o change_n of_o the_o day_n of_o rest_n without_o any_o change_n of_o the_o law_n a_o second_o exception_n that_o we_o take_v against_o the_o draw_n of_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o four_o commandment_n law_n 1._o to_o urge_v the_o keep_n of_o the_o sabbath_n from_o the_o both_o in_o appoint_v the_o proportion_n of_o time_n for_o a_o holy_a rest_n and_o in_o limit_v it_o to_o such_o a_o particular_a day_n now_o to_o draw_v the_o reason_n of_o our_o rest_v from_o god_n rest_v alike_o because_o god_n condition_n and_o we_o be_v not_o alike_o show_v no_o equity_n in_o the_o law_n at_o all_o we_o can_v make_v good_a this_o position_n it_o be_v equal_a and_o just_a that_o we_o shall_v rest_v because_o god_n rest_v there_o be_v infinite_a odds_o between_o god_n condition_n and_o we_o god_n may_v rest_v as_o long_o and_o as_o often_o as_o he_o please_v see_v he_o have_v al-sufficienty_a in_o himself_o and_o be_v not_o support_v by_o labour_n as_o man_n and_o their_o estate_n be_v who_o if_o they_o shall_v cease_v from_o their_o labour_n too_o long_o or_o too_o often_o must_v necessary_o perish_v so_o that_o by_o reason_v in_o this_o manner_n that_o we_o must_v rest_v because_o god_n rest_v too_o can_v make_v the_o equity_n of_o this_o law_n appear_v at_o all_o see_v therefore_o the_o equity_n of_o the_o law_n can_v be_v evidence_v by_o reason_v from_o god_n mere_a act_n of_o rest_v upon_o that_o day_n let_v we_o now_o try_v whether_o the_o other_o way_n of_o deduce_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o law_n from_o god_n advance_v and_o honour_v the_o seven_o day_n by_o his_o rest_v thereupon_o and_o establish_v the_o rule_n of_o our_o rest_n thereupon_o do_v not_o more_o clear_o manifest_v the_o equity_n of_o this_o law_n in_o that_o particular_a evident_a but_o draw_v the_o reason_n from_o god_n honour_v of_o that_o day_n by_o his_o rest_n the_o equity_n of_o the_o law_n be_v evident_a if_o we_o draw_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o law_n from_o the_o honour_n of_o the_o seven_o day_n by_o god_n rest_v upon_o that_o from_o all_o his_o work_n we_o may_v conceive_v that_o he_o argue_v in_o this_o or_o that_o manner_n that_o day_n which_o be_v honour_v by_o god_n above_o other_o day_n by_o his_o most_o eminent_a work_n of_o mercy_n to_o mankind_n shall_v be_v the_o day_n of_o holy_a rest_n to_o be_v consecrate_v to_o he_o for_o his_o worship_n but_o the_o day_n in_o which_o god_n end_v and_o perfect_v the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n be_v the_o day_n honour_v and_o advance_v above_o all_o other_o day_n by_o that_o wonderful_a work_n therefore_o that_o shall_v be_v the_o day_n of_o your_o holy_a rest_n in_o this_o syllogism_n the_o minor_a or_o second_o proposition_n only_o be_v express_v in_o the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n and_o that_o too_o only_o in_o part_n for_o there_o be_v no_o more_o say_v but_o that_o god_n rest_v that_o day_n not_o that_o he_o honour_v that_o day_n by_o his_o rest_n which_o notwithstanding_o be_v necessary_o imply_v for_o he_o that_o say_v that_o christ_n rise_v the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n must_v mean_v as_o much_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v christ_n make_v the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n honourable_a &_o memorable_a by_o his_o resurrection_n on_o that_o day_n as_o for_o the_o major_a or_o first_o proposition_n in_o this_o syllogism_n it_o be_v a_o principle_n acknowledge_v by_o all_o man_n by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o day_n and_o time_n in_o themselves_o be_v all_o equal_a that_o which_o advance_v one_o day_n above_o another_o must_v be_v some_o memorable_a event_n that_o have_v happen_v on_o that_o day_n again_o that_o such_o memorable_a event_n ought_v to_o be_v the_o ground_n upon_o which_o such_o day_n as_o god_n have_v mark_v out_o by_o they_o church_n lay_v down_o a_o ground_n upon_o which_o god_n institute_v other_o feast_n and_o the_o church_n and_o advance_v above_o other_o day_n aught_o to_o be_v observe_v above_o other_o day_n be_v as_o clear_v and_o evident_a wherefore_o we_o see_v that_o god_n himself_o have_v take_v that_o for_o his_o ground_n of_o justify_v the_o feast_n of_o passeover_n and_o pentecost_n and_o in_o imitation_n of_o he_o the_o jew_n upon_o the_o same_o ground_n take_v upon_o they_o the_o observation_n of_o the_o feast_n of_o purim_n hest_n 9.21_o nature_n yea_o the_o very_a heathen_n lead_v thereto_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n 23._o yea_o the_o very_a heathen_a themselves_o as_o of_o the_o sabbath_n now_o whereas_o god_n both_o in_o all_o his_o way_n appear_v god_n therefore_o purpose_v to_o show_v the_o equity_n of_o this_o law_n can_v not_o but_o set_v down_o the_o reason_n so_o as_o that_o may_v best_o appear_v but_o more_o especial_o in_o his_o law_n take_v special_a care_n to_o make_v it_o appear_v unto_o man_n that_o they_o be_v all_o equal_a and_o just_a in_o all_o thing_n as_o the_o prophet_n david_n acknowledge_v psal_n 119.128_o both_o for_o his_o own_o honour_n and_o withal_o to_o draw_v we_o the_o more_o cheerful_o to_o obey_v and_o serve_v he_o we_o can_v imagine_v that_o he_o be_v to_o give_v a_o reason_n of_o this_o law_n and_o have_v so_o fair_a a_o ground_n by_o which_o he_o may_v manifest_v the_o equity_n thereof_o even_o to_o natural_a reason_n itself_o shall_v conceal_v that_o and_o propose_v another_o reason_n in_o which_o the_o equity_n
of_o the_o law_n can_v not_o be_v manifest_v at_o all_o nay_o far_o whereas_o god_n insist_o so_o much_o upon_o that_o ground_n especial_o in_o the_o institution_n of_o the_o passeover_n importance_n especial_o see_v he_o do_v it_o in_o ordain_v other_o feast_n of_o less_o importance_n exod._n 12.42_o it_o seem_v very_o strange_a that_o he_o shall_v against_o his_o custom_n neglect_n or_o pass_v by_o that_o ground_n upon_o which_o he_o institute_v other_o feast_n in_o the_o institution_n of_o the_o great_a of_o all_o feast_n that_o ever_o be_v ordain_v in_o the_o church_n it_o seem_v therefore_o more_o than_o probable_a that_o this_o reason_n draw_v from_o god_n rest_v upon_o the_o seven_o day_n must_v be_v deduce_v not_o from_o god_n act_n in_o rest_v on_o that_o day_n but_o from_o the_o consequent_a of_o that_o rest_n the_o honour_v of_o that_o day_n by_o his_o rest_v therein_o some_o man_n perhaps_o may_v reply_v that_o whether_o the_o very_a act_n of_o god_n rest_v objection_n 1_o or_o the_o honour_n of_o the_o day_n wherein_o he_o rest_v be_v make_v the_o ground_n of_o appoint_v that_o the_o day_n of_o our_o rest_n day_n which_o way_n soever_o we_o draw_v the_o reason_n it_o still_o enforce_v the_o observation_n of_o the_o seven_o day_n it_o be_v all_o one_o because_o either_o way_n it_o bind_v we_o still_o to_o the_o observation_n of_o the_o same_o seven_o day_n we_o answer_v that_o although_o to_o the_o jew_n it_o be_v all_o one_o which_o way_n soever_o the_o reason_n be_v deduce_v yet_o it_o make_v a_o wide_a difference_n in_o the_o commandment_n to_o ordain_v the_o day_n to_o be_v observe_v because_o god_n rest_v upon_o that_o day_n or_o to_o command_v it_o to_o be_v observe_v because_o god_n honour_v that_o day_n by_o his_o rest_v therein_o answer_v for_o god_n rest_v be_v a_o particular_a act_n day_n not_o so_o for_o the_o act_n of_o god_n rest_v be_v appliable_a only_o to_o that_o day_n but_o the_o honour_n of_o the_o day_n thereby_o be_v appliable_a to_o other_o day_n can_v be_v communicate_v to_o any_o other_o than_o that_o very_a day_n wherein_o he_o rest_v but_o the_o honour_n of_o that_o day_n be_v of_o a_o special_a nature_n may_v be_v communicate_v to_o any_o other_o day_n that_o shall_v be_v honour_v in_o like_a manner_n so_o that_o if_o the_o reason_n be_v draw_v from_o god_n act_n of_o rest_v upon_o that_o day_n if_o we_o change_v the_o day_n we_o alter_v the_o law_n but_o if_o we_o draw_v the_o reason_n from_o god_n advance_v of_o the_o day_n by_o his_o rest_v therein_o above_o other_o day_n we_o alter_v not_o the_o law_n when_o we_o observe_v another_o day_n upon_o the_o same_o ground_n it_o may_v be_v object_v yet_o far_o that_o this_o rule_n by_o which_o this_o holy_a day_n of_o rest_n be_v assign_v in_o this_o general_a way_n be_v both_o uncertain_a and_o obscure_a uncertain_a objection_n 2_o because_o if_o the_o advancement_n of_o one_o day_n above_o another_o by_o some_o eminent_a mercy_n bestow_v on_o that_o day_n obscure_a the_o rule_n thus_o lay_v down_o be_v 1._o uncertain_a 2._o obscure_a be_v our_o rule_n for_o the_o observe_n or_o alter_v the_o day_n of_o holy_a rest_n it_o may_v fall_v out_o that_o divers_a day_n be_v make_v remarkable_a by_o such_o event_n it_o will_v be_v hard_a to_o judge_v which_o of_o they_o be_v most_o eminent_a and_o consequent_o point_v out_o unto_o we_o by_o god_n to_o be_v observe_v answer_n to_o this_o we_o answer_v that_o the_o sabbath_n day_n must_v needs_o be_v esteem_v the_o high_a of_o all_o consecrate_a time_n uncertain_a 1._o not_o uncertain_a as_o be_v perpetual_o univerfally_o and_o more_o frequent_o to_o be_v observe_v then_o any_o other_o festival_n day_n church_n because_o it_o be_v ground_v upon_o the_o honour_n of_o the_o day_n by_o the_o great_a most_o universal_a and_o perpetual_a mercy_n bestow_v on_o the_o church_n whence_o it_o must_v needs_o follow_v that_o the_o work_n of_o mercy_n upon_o the_o memory_n whereof_o that_o day_n be_v found_v must_v be_v such_o as_o not_o only_o bring_v a_o universal_a and_o perpetual_a benefit_n but_o beside_o the_o great_a of_o all_o benefit_n unto_o the_o church_n now_o that_o the_o work_n of_o create_v the_o world_n by_o god_n word_n in_o the_o beginning_n and_o since_o of_o the_o redemption_n of_o it_o by_o jesus_n christ_n be_v the_o most_o eminent_a of_o all_o the_o mercy_n bestow_v by_o god_n upon_o man_n and_o indeed_o the_o fountain_n and_o foundation_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n the_o benefit_n whereof_o remain_v to_o the_o world_n end_n be_v more_o evident_a than_o the_o light_n and_o of_o these_o two_o the_o late_a be_v in_o all_o respect_v the_o far_o great_a mercy_n and_o therefore_o deserve_o carry_v the_o observation_n of_o this_o holy_a day_n in_o remembrance_n thereof_o yet_o have_v the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n so_o order_v it_o that_o in_o the_o consecrate_v this_o day_n of_o rest_n both_o shall_v be_v remember_v the_o creation_n in_o the_o proportion_n of_o the_o time_n by_o set_v apart_o one_o day_n of_o seven_o and_o the_o redemption_n by_o change_v the_o sabbath_n from_o the_o last_o day_n of_o seven_o to_o the_o first_o in_o brethren_n to_o endeavour_v by_o all_o the_o mean_n that_o they_o can_v the_o establish_n and_o maintain_v of_o this_o truth_n that_o the_o moral_a law_n give_v by_o god_n to_o adam_n in_o the_o
