that_o he_o speak_v of_o habit_n that_o be_v then_o dedicate_v and_o appoint_v unto_o the_o service_n of_o idol_n but_o what_o governor_n in_o our_o church_n do_v command_v you_o to_o go_v to_o the_o mass_n furthermore_o that_o we_o may_v give_v unto_o our_o opposite_n their_o due_a right_n we_o shall_v hereafter_o show_v that_o the_o comparison_n between_o papist_n and_o pagan_n be_v not_o altogether_o so_o equal_a when_o we_o come_v to_o scan_v this_o very_a point_n sect_n xii_o their_o six_o instance_n from_o father_n concern_v the_o abolish_n of_o heathenish_a ceremony_n orat_fw-la in_o another_o place_n tert._n affirm_v that_o christian_n may_v not_o wash_v their_o hand_n or_o lay_v aside_o â—heir_a cloak_n before_o prayer_n nor_o sit_v upon_o their_o bed_n after_o prayer_n because_o the_o heathen_a use_v so_o to_o do_v our_o answer_n tertullian_n do_v not_o condemn_v any_o of_o these_o ceremony_n mere_o for_o the_o resemblance_n sake_n which_o they_o have_v with_o pagan_n in_o such_o act_n but_o for_o the_o superstitious_a opinion_n wherewith_o they_o be_v infect_v by_o attribute_v both_o a_o efficacy_n of_o sanctification_n and_o consequent_o a_o necessity_n of_o observation_n unto_o they_o let_v we_o advise_v with_o tertullian_n in_o these_o point_n for_o he_o will_v show_v first_o concern_v wash_v that_o the_o christian_n who_o he_o condemn_v who_o be_v the_o hemerobaptist_n or_o as_o some_o think_v the_o catharist_n of_o those_o day_n have_v this_o opinion_n in_o wash_v that_o although_o their_o life_n be_v never_o so_o beastly_a or_o bloody_a yet_o they_o may_v be_v cleanse_v by_o the_o only_a ceremonious_a wash_n of_o their_o hand_n therefore_o tert._n confute_v they_o say_v quae_fw-la ratio_fw-la est_fw-la etc._n etc._n tert._n what_o reason_n be_v there_o for_o you_o to_o think_v that_o you_o may_v speak_v unto_o god_n with_o wash_a hand_n have_v have_v sordid_a and_o filthy_a mind_n the_o spiritual_a cleansing_n which_o be_v necessary_a be_v from_o murder_n witchcraft_n and_o from_o idolatry_n which_o you_o have_v conceive_v in_o your_o mind_n but_o finish_v and_o execute_v with_o your_o hand_n i_o tell_v you_o although_o israel_n shall_v wash_v her_o body_n in_o every_o member_n and_o part_n thereof_o yet_o very_o do_v her_o hand_n remain_v unclean_a and_o pollute_a with_o the_o blood_n of_o the_o prophet_n and_o therefore_o
