no_o part_n of_o religion_n can_v be_v repugnant_a to_o reason_n whereunto_o you_o in_o particular_a subscribe_v unaware_o in_o say_v from_o truth_n no_o man_n can_v by_o good_a consequence_n infer_v falsehood_n which_o be_v to_o say_v in_o effect_n that_o reason_n can_v never_o lead_v any_o man_n to_o error_n and_o after_o you_o have_v do_v so_o you_o proclaim_v to_o all_o the_o world_n as_o you_o in_o this_o pamphlet_n do_v very_o frequent_o that_o if_o man_n follow_v their_o reason_n and_o discourse_n they_o will_v if_o they_o understand_v themselves_o be_v lead_v to_o socinianism_n and_o thus_o you_o see_v with_o what_o probable_a matter_n i_o may_v furnish_v out_o and_o justify_v my_o accusation_n if_o i_o shall_v charge_v you_o with_o lead_v man_n to_o socinianism_n yet_o i_o do_v not_o conceive_v that_o i_o have_v ground_n enough_o for_o this_o odious_a imputation_n and_o much_o less_o shall_v you_o have_v charge_v protestant_n with_o it_o who_o you_o confess_v to_o abhor_v and_o detest_v it_o and_o who_o fight_n against_o it_o not_o with_o the_o break_a reed_n and_o out_o of_o the_o paper-fortress_n of_o a_o imaginary_a infallibility_n which_o be_v only_o to_o weigh_v not_o so_o much_o with_o they_o as_o with_o we_o we_o have_v a_o great_a veneration_n for_o the_o holy_a scripture_n itself_o than_o the_o right_a socinian_n for_o such_o a_o one_o make_v to_o it_o whereas_o a_o man_n of_o this_o church_n believe_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v write_v by_o inspiration_n from_o god_n and_o upon_o that_o account_n he_o assure_v himself_o that_o nothing_o contrary_a to_o true_a reason_n can_v be_v contain_v in_o the_o scripture_n therefore_o when_o he_o find_v any_o thing_n in_o holy_a writ_n which_o to_o he_o be_v incomprehensible_a he_o do_v not_o say_v he_o believe_v it_o though_o it_o be_v impossible_a and_o irrational_a but_o he_o believe_v it_o to_o be_v rational_a though_o mysterious_a and_o he_o suspect_v not_o reason_n itself_o but_o a_o protestant_a judge_n whether_o his_o faith_n be_v rational_a or_o whether_o it_o be_v found_v on_o divine_a revelation_n but_o he_o will_v not_o allow_v his_o reason_n to_o oppose_v any_o sagacious_a be_v convince_v that_o they_o first_o think_v it_o to_o be_v against_o plain_a reason_n and_o then_o reject_v it_o as_o a_o error_n they_o colour_v their_o aversion_n with_o force_a interpretation_n of_o holy_a writ_n the_o word_n of_o ostorodius_n instit._n hint_n to_o we_o at_o what_o end_n they_o begin_v if_o reason_n say_v he_o show_v express_o that_o a_o trinity_n of_o word_n of_o god_n and_o further_o they_o own_o with_o we_o from_o the_o principle_n of_o reason_n that_o god_n be_v just_a and_o good_a but_o then_o with_o the_o platonist_n they_o measure_v justice_n and_o goodness_n by_o particular_a notion_n which_o be_v their_o reason_n but_o not_o the_o reason_n of_o mankind_n and_o when_o any_o thing_n be_v say_v in_o the_o scripture_n which_o be_v contrary_a to_o such_o measure_n they_o be_v ready_a to_o depart_v from_o it_o upon_o this_o account_n it_o be_v that_o many_o of_o they_o deny_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o eternal_a torment_n of_o the_o final_o impenitent_a not_o because_o it_o be_v not_o plain_a enough_o in_o scripture_n but_o because_o it_o seem_v contrary_a to_o their_o notion_n of_o justice_n goodness_n and_o mercy_n though_o in_o charity_n and_o in_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o catholic_n church_n be_v with_o they_o in_o all_o thing_n in_o which_o they_o be_v oblige_v to_o be_v with_o they_o and_o in_o the_o rest_n they_o be_v hinder_v from_o external_a communion_n by_o the_o sinful_a condition_n which_o a_o particular_a church_n put_v upon_o they_o the_o socinian_o say_v the_o same_o thing_n for_o themselves_o with_o reference_n to_o other_o communion_n beside_o the_o roman_a therefore_o the_o protestant_n justify_v the_o plea_n of_o the_o socinian_n in_o relation_n to_o schism_n the_o same_o answer_n serve_v for_o the_o same_o objection_n arg._n socinian_o say_v as_o protestant_n do_v but_o the_o reason_n be_v on_o the_o side_n of_o the_o latter_a and_o not_o on_o the_o former_a and_o our_o author_n himself_o with_o respect_n to_o his_o instance_n of_o the_o divinity_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n will_n by_o no_o mean_n say_v that_o the_o soci●…ians_n who_o make_v that_o article_n where_o impose_v a_o sinful_a condition_n of_o communion_n can_v by_o say_v so_o excuse_v themselves_o from_o schism_n whilst_o they_o any_o where_o refuse_v external_a communion_n upon_o the_o pretence_n of_o that_o article_n as_o not_o christian._n a_o romanist_n can_v say_v that_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_o propose_v to_o the_o socinian_o and_o that_o it_o be_v never_o in_o their_o power_n to_o be_v convince_v if_o they_o will_v turn_v this_o upon_o we_o with_o reference_n to_o our_o not_o separate_v from_o they_o but_o stand_v where_o we_o be_v after_o have_v in_o christian_a and_o legal_a manner_n also_o throw_v off_o the_o corruption_n which_o be_v unagreeable_a to_o the_o primitive_a christianity_n we_o will_v try_v it_o over_o again_o with_o they_o by_o scripture_n antiquity_n and_o reason_n and_o the_o impartial_a world_n shall_v judge_v if_o it_o please_v whether_o the_o additional_a article_n in_o the_o creed_n of_o pope_n pius_n be_v of_o god_n or_o men._n for_o this_o point_n of_o schism_n as_o here_o manage_v the_o reason_n of_o this_o five_o conference_n be_v long_o ago_o confute_v by_o mr._n chillingworth_n but_o our_o author_n do_v not_o condescend_v to_o take_v notice_n of_o it_o though_o he_o cite_v many_o other_o word_n of_o mr._n chillingworth_n not_o far_o from_o these_o but_o a_o cunning_a marksman_n will_v not_o put_v that_o into_o his_o gun_n which_o may_v make_v it_o recoil_v however_o i_o shall_v be_v bold_a to_o produce_v the_o word_n which_o he_o in_o all_o probability_n do_v studious_o omit_v 8c_fw-la whereas_o d._n potter_n say_v there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o a_o schism_n from_o they_o and_o a_o reformation_n of_o ourselves_o this_o you_o say_v be_v a_o quaint_a subtlety_n by_o which_o all_o schism_n and_o sin_n may_v be_v as_o well_o excuse_v it_o seem_v then_o in_o your_o judgement_n that_o thief_n and_o adulterer_n and_o murderer_n and_o traitor_n may_v say_v with_o as_o much_o probability_n as_o protestant_n that_o they_o do_v no_o hurt_n to_o other_o but_o only_o reform_v themselves_o but_o then_o methinks_v it_o be_v very_o strange_a that_o all_o protestant_n shall_v agree_v with_o one_o consent_n in_o this_o defence_n of_o themselves_o from_o the_o imputation_n of_o schism_n and_o that_o to_o this_o day_n never_o any_o thief_n or_o murderer_n shall_v have_v be_v hear_v of_o to_o make_v use_n of_o this_o apology_n and_o then_o for_o schismatic_n i_o will_v know_v whether_o victor_n bishop_n of_o rome_n who_o excommunicate_v the_o church_n of_o asia_n for_o not_o conform_v to_o his_o church_n in_o keep_v easter_n whether_o novatian_n that_o divide_v from_o cornelius_n upon_o pretence_n that_o himself_o be_v elect_v bishop_n of_o rome_n when_o indeed_o he_o be_v not_o whether_o felicissimus_n and_o his_o crew_n that_o go_v out_o of_o the_o church_n of_o carthage_n and_o set_v up_o altar_n against_o altar_n because_o have_v fall_v in_o persecution_n they_o may_v not_o be_v restore_v to_o the_o peace_n of_o the_o church_n present_o upon_o the_o intercession_n of_o the_o confessor_n whether_o the_o donatist_n who_o divide_v from_o and_o damn_v all_o the_o world_n because_o all_o the_o world_n will_v not_o excommunicate_v they_o who_o be_v accuse_v only_o and_o not_o convict_v to_o have_v be_v traditor_n of_o the_o sacred_a book_n whether_o they_o which_o for_o the_o slip_n and_o infirmity_n of_o other_o which_o they_o may_v and_o ought_v to_o tolerate_v or_o upon_o some_o difference_n in_o matter_n of_o order_n and_o ceremony_n or_o for_o some_o error_n in_o doctrine_n neither_o pernicious_a nor_o hurtful_a to_o faith_n or_o piety_n separate_v themselves_o from_o other_o or_o other_o from_o themselves_o or_o last_o whether_o they_o that_o put_v themselves_o out_o of_o the_o church_n unity_n and_o obedience_n because_o their_o opinion_n be_v not_o approve_v there_o but_o reprehend_v and_o confute_v or_o because_o be_v of_o impious_a conversation_n they_o be_v impatient_a of_o their_o church_n censure_n i_o will_v know_v i_o say_v whether_o all_o or_o any_o of_o these_o may_v with_o any_o face_n or_o without_o extreme_a impudence_n put_v in_o this_o plea_n of_o protestant_n and_o pretend_v with_o as_o much_o likelihood_n as_o they_o that_o they_o do_v not_o separate_v from_o other_o but_o only_o reform_v themselves_o but_o suppose_v they_o be_v so_o impudent_a as_o to_o say_v so_o in_o ☞_o their_o own_o defence_n false_o do_v it_o follow_v by_o any_o good_a logic_n that_o therefore_o this_o apology_n be_v not_o to_o employ_v by_o protestant_n who_o may_v say_v so_o true_o we_o make_v say_v they_o no_o schism_n from_o you_o but_o only_o a_o reformation_n of_o ourselves_o this_o you_o reply_v be_v no_o good_a justification_n because_o it_o may_v be_v pretend_v by_o any_o schismatique_n very_o true_a any_o schismatique_n that_o can_v speak_v may_v say_v the_o same_o word_n as_o any_o rebel_n that_o make_v conscience_n the_o cloak_n of_o his_o impious_a disobedience_n may_v say_v with_o s._n peter_n and_o s._n john_n we_o must_v obey_v god_n rather_o than_o man_n but_o then_o the_o question_n be_v whether_o any_o schismatique_a may_v say_v so_o true_o and_o to_o this_o question_v you_o say_v just_o nothing_o but_o conclude_v because_o this_o defence_n may_v be_v abuse_v by_o some_o it_o must_v be_v use_v by_o none_o as_o if_o you_o shall_v have_v say_v s._n peter_n and_o s._n john_n do_v ill_a to_o make_v such_o a_o answer_n as_o they_o make_v because_o impious_a hypocrite_n may_v make_v use_n of_o the_o same_o to_o palliate_v their_o disobedience_n and_o rebellion_n against_o the_o lawful_a command_n of_o lawful_a authority_n the_o conclusion_n after_o all_o this_o causeless_a find_v fault_n with_o the_o plea_n of_o the_o protestant_n what_o be_v it_o that_o the_o romanist_n aim_v at_o and_o after_o what_o manner_n will_v they_o mend_v this_o plea_n they_o will_v tell_v you_o this_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o consequence_n 9_o of_o the_o late_a way_n take_v up_o by_o many_o protestant_n viz._n that_o in_o stead_n of_o the_o roman_a church_n her_o set_n up_o some_o man_n the_o church-governor_n as_o infallible_a in_o necessary_n here_o be_v set_v up_o by_o they_o every_o christian_n if_o he_o will_v both_o infallible_a in_o all_o necessary_n and_o certain_a that_o he_o be_v so_o they_o will_v endeavour_v to_o persuade_v you_o that_o the_o great_a end_n they_o aim_v at_o be_v truth_n and_o peace_n and_o that_o these_o bless_a end_n be_v never_o to_o be_v universal_o attain_v without_o a_o infallible_a church_n to_o which_o all_o may_v submit_v their_o judgement_n in_o religion_n and_o by_o such_o submission_n preserve_v unity_n they_o will_v continue_v their_o discourse_n and_o say_v without_o such_o a_o judge_n every_o man_n reason_n be_v reason_n and_o every_o man_n scripture_n be_v scripture_n and_o he_o be_v leave_v to_o run_v wild_a after_o his_o own_o
