require_v they_o even_o according_a to_o our_o opinion_n of_o this_o matter_n and_o we_o see_v that_o notwithstanding_o we_o have_v make_v such_o express_a declaration_n against_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n and_o that_o by_o reason_n of_o this_o controversy_n we_o express_v ourselves_o more_o cautious_o than_o we_o may_v suppose_v the_o father_n will_v do_v before_o any_o controversy_n be_v move_v ve_v about_o it_o yet_o some_o general_a expression_n of_o our_o own_o divine_n be_v often_o turn_v against_o we_o by_o those_o of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n and_o there_o be_v no_o question_n but_o be_v the_o author_n of_o they_o as_o old_a as_o the_o
father_n they_o will_v be_v as_o confident_o quote_v for_o the_o proof_n of_o transubstantiation_n as_o any_o say_n of_o the_o father_n now_o be_v and_o this_o show_v we_o how_o this_o doctrine_n though_o monstrous_a in_o itself_o may_v under_o the_o covert_a of_o such_o general_a expression_n without_o any_o great_a stir_n or_o bustle_v insensible_o creep_v into_o the_o church_n especial_o in_o very_o ignorant_a and_o superstition_n time_n though_o after_o all_o our_o divine_n have_v sufficient_o trace_v the_o footstep_n of_o it_o and_o show_v the_o progress_n it_o make_v and_o the_o opposition_n it_o meet_v with_o in_o the_o world_n before_o it_o can_v be_v establish_v the_o next_o thing_n to_o be_v speak_v to_o be_v the_o idolatry_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n in_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o mass_n and_o in_o the_o invocation_n of_o the_o bless_a virgin_n and_o of_o other_o saint_n as_o it_o be_v practise_v in_o that_o church_n now_o idolatry_n may_v be_v of_o two_o sort_n i._o when_o people_n worship_v any_o thing_n for_o the_o supreme_a god_n which_o real_o be_v not_o so_o ii_o when_o they_o give_v that_o worship_n to_o any_o creature_n which_o be_v due_a only_a to_o god_n and_o which_o he_o have_v appropriate_v to_o himself_o as_o to_o the_o first_o sort_n of_o idolatry_n that_o of_o worship_v some_o thing_n as_o the_o supreme_a god_n which_o rea_o be_v not_o so_o we_o do_v not_o charge_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n with_o it_o unless_o perhaps_o the_o worship_v of_o what_o be_v but_o bread_n and_o wine_n in_o the_o sacrament_n instead_o of_o jesus_n christ_n may_v come_v under_o that_o head_n i_o say_v perhaps_o here_o because_o i_o will_v not_o enter_v into_o any_o thing_n beside_o the_o main_a cause_n that_o may_v be_v contest_v for_o though_o jesus_n christ_n be_v god_n and_o they_o worship_v some_o thing_n as_o jesus_n christ_n which_o be_v not_o so_o yet_o the_o mistake_n be_v chief_o about_o his_o human_a nature_n i_o will_v not_o positive_o affirm_v a_o thing_n which_o may_v bring_v on_o any_o dispute_n which_o be_v not_o to_o our_o purpose_n this_o they_o do_v not_o deny_v that_o they_o give_v the_o high_a divine_a worship_n which_o they_o call_v latria_n to_o that_o object_n which_o they_o take_v into_o their_o hand_n and_o put_v into_o their_o mouth_n in_o receive_v this_o sacrament_n which_o i_o shall_v at_o present_a call_v idolatry_n but_o with_o a_o promise_n to_o recant_v it_o whensoever_o they_o shall_v answer_v the_o reason_n i_o have_v give_v to_o prove_v that_o what_o they_o thus_o adore_v be_v only_a bread_n and_o wine_n or_o whenever_o they_o shall_v give_v i_o a_o more_o proper_a name_n by_o which_o i_o may_v call_v that_o great_a sin_n of_o give_v the_o high_a divine_a worship_n to_o a_o creature_n the_o truth_n be_v that_o such_o a_o worship_n may_v not_o only_o be_v call_v idolatry_n but_o the_o most_o absurd_a and_o senseless_a idolatry_n that_o ever_o the_o world_n fall_v into_o but_o this_o i_o shall_v not_o now_o insist_v upon_o have_v speak_v so_o much_o already_o to_o that_o which_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o it_o the_o doctrine_n of_o transubstantiation_n the_o other_o matter_n in_o which_o we_o charge_v they_o with_o idolatry_n be_v the_o invocation_n of_o the_o bless_a virgin_n and_o other_o saint_n now_o in_o this_o we_o do_v not_o charge_v they_o with_o own_v any_o of_o those_o to_o be_v god_n but_o only_o with_o give_v they_o that_o worship_n and_o honour_n which_o can_v lawful_o be_v give_v to_o any_o thing_n which_o be_v but_o a_o creature_n in_o speak_v to_o this_o i_o shall_v consider_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o whether_o the_o give_v to_o a_o creature_n the_o worship_n due_a only_o to_o god_n may_v not_o be_v proper_o term_v idolatry_n though_o at_o the_o same_o time_n we_o pay_v that_o worship_n we_o own_v it_o not_o to_o be_v god_n but_o a_o creature_n 2._o whether_o the_o worship_n give_v to_o saint_n by_o the_o invocation_n practise_v in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n be_v of_o that_o sort_n such_o as_o god_n have_v appropriate_v to_o himself_o and_o consequent_o such_o as_o become_v idolatrous_a when_o apply_v to_o a_o creature_n 1._o as_o to_o the_o first_o of_o these_o those_o of_o the_o roman_a church_n can_v deny_v but_o it_o must_v be_v a_o very_a great_a sin_n to_o give_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n to_o creature_n but_o they_o deny_v it_o to_o be_v proper_o idolatry_n we_o on_o the_o other_o side_n grant_v that_o it_o be_v not_o idolatry_n in_o the_o high_a sense_n of_o the_o word_n and_o in_o the_o sense_n in_o which_o they_o common_o understand_v it_o viz._n the_o own_v a_o creature_n to_o be_v god_n so_o that_o so_o far_o we_o be_v agree_v but_o then_o we_o say_v that_o word_n may_v be_v use_v in_o a_o low_a sense_n to_o denote_v what_o they_o grant_v to_o be_v a_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o we_o but_o will_v not_o call_v it_o by_o that_o name_n so_o that_o our_o difference_n in_o this_o matter_n be_v only_o about_o the_o use_n of_o a_o word_n now_o we_o think_v ourselves_o in_o the_o right_n in_o the_o use_n of_o this_o word_n upon_o these_o account_n 1._o because_o we_o have_v no_o other_o name_n to_o express_v that_o which_o be_v not_o deny_v to_o be_v a_o very_a great_a sin_n the_o give_v god_n worship_n to_o creature_n and_o have_v no_o peculiar_a name_n for_o it_o we_o think_v it_o not_o improper_a to_o give_v it_o the_o name_n of_o that_o sin_n which_o be_v of_o near_a affinity_n to_o it_o and_o of_o the_o same_o general_a kind_n as_o be_v do_v in_o many_o other_o case_n thus_o our_o saviour_n call_v look_v upon_o a_o woman_n to_o lust_n after_o she_o by_o the_o name_n of_o adultery_n and_o the_o like_a the_o next_o step_n to_o own_v a_o creature_n to_o be_v god_n be_v to_o give_v it_o the_o worship_n due_a to_o god_n and_o therefore_o we_o think_v it_o not_o at_o all_o improper_a to_o call_v these_o two_o sin_n by_o the_o same_o general_a name_n especial_o have_v no_o word_n in_o our_o language_n more_o proper_a by_o which_o we_o may_v express_v it_o 2._o we_o think_v ourselves_o full_o justify_v in_o the_o expression_n because_o the_o scripture_n do_v every_o where_o charge_v the_o heathen_a worship_n of_o their_o god_n and_o image_n in_o general_a with_o the_o crime_n of_o idolatry_n though_o nothing_o can_v be_v more_o apparent_a than_o that_o many_o of_o the_o heathen_a own_a only_a one_o supreme_a god_n and_o that_o all_o of_o they_o look_v upon_o many_o of_o the_o god_n who_o they_o worship_v not_o as_o supreme_a but_o as_o god_n of_o a_o inferior_a nature_n and_o have_v much_o the_o same_o opinion_n of_o they_o as_o the_o romanist_n have_v now_o of_o saint_n and_o angel_n and_o have_v the_o very_a same_o pretence_n and_o excuse_n for_o the_o worship_v of_o they_o which_o the_o romanist_n make_v use_n of_o to_o defend_v themselves_o they_o own_v many_o of_o their_o god_n to_o have_v be_v bear_v and_o to_o have_v dye_v and_o it_o be_v hardly_o possible_a to_o look_v upon_o any_o such_o to_o be_v the_o supreme_a god_n in_o a_o word_n there_o be_v nothing_o more_o evident_a than_o this_o that_o they_o have_v several_a rank_n and_o order_n and_o degree_n among_o their_o god_n and_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o look_v upon_o all_o these_o to_o be_v supreme_a and_o yet_o the_o scripture_n every_o where_o without_o any_o distinction_n charge_v their_o whole_a worship_n with_o idolatry_n and_o so_o do_v the_o primitive_a father_n as_o well_o as_o the_o scripture_n particular_o they_o think_v it_o to_o be_v idolatry_n to_o throw_v a_o little_a incense_n into_o the_o fire_n before_o the_o statue_n of_o their_o emperor_n from_o whence_o we_o may_v plain_o infer_v these_o two_o thing_n first_o that_o they_o think_v that_o there_o may_v be_v idolatry_n in_o give_v such_o worship_n as_o be_v appropriate_v to_o god_n to_o creature_n though_o they_o be_v not_o pretend_v to_o be_v any_o thing_n else_o but_o creature_n only_a creature_n high_o exalt_v and_o in_o high_a favour_n with_o god_n as_o saint_n and_o angel_n be_v suppose_v to_o be_v second_o that_o they_o look_v upon_o the_o offering_n of_o incense_n to_o be_v a_o part_n of_o worship_n appropriate_v to_o god_n and_o that_o can_v not_o be_v give_v to_o a_o creature_n without_o the_o crime_n of_o idolatry_n which_o be_v a_o matter_n the_o church_n of_o rome_n have_v reason_n to_o consider_v well_o of_o who_o offer_v it_o every_o day_n to_o those_o who_o however_o they_o may_v have_v be_v better_a man_n be_v certain_o no_o more_o god_n than_o the_o heathen_a emperor_n be_v to_o conclude_v this_o matter_n the_o sense_n of_o the_o primitive_a church_n in_o the_o business_n of_o idolatry_n be_v plain_o see_v in_o this_o that_o they_o every_o
any_o prayer_n put_v up_o to_o any_o creature_n it_o may_v be_v it_o will_v be_v say_v that_o the_o saint_n be_v not_o then_o in_o heaven_n and_o so_o be_v not_o in_o a_o condition_n to_o hear_v the_o prayer_n that_o shall_v be_v put_v up_o to_o they_o and_o have_v not_o so_o much_o favour_n with_o god_n as_o they_o may_v be_v suppose_v to_o have_v now_o since_o the_o resurrection_n of_o christ_n that_o he_o have_v admit_v they_o so_o near_o into_o his_o presence_n now_o in_o answer_n to_o this_o i_o shall_v not_o at_o present_a pretend_v to_o determine_v whether_o the_o saint_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n be_v in_o heaven_n before_o christ_n resurrection_n or_o not_o nor_o whether_o they_o and_o other_o saint_n since_o be_v there_o now_o because_o a_o great_a many_o christian_n of_o no_o mean_a authority_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n have_v be_v of_o different_a opinion_n in_o these_o matter_n only_o i_o think_v these_o two_o or_o three_o thing_n be_v very_o plain_a 1._o that_o enoch_n and_o elias_n be_v suppose_v by_o a_o great_a many_o before_o our_o saviour_n time_n to_o be_v in_o heaven_n and_o they_o must_v have_v be_v look_v upon_o by_o they_o to_o be_v very_o great_a favourite_n of_o god_n by_o be_v take_v out_o of_o this_o world_n in_o so_o strange_a and_o wonderful_a a_o manner_n as_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o they_o be_v and_o yet_o we_o hear_v as_o little_a of_o pray_v to_o they_o as_o to_o any_o other_o person_n 2._o suppose_v it_o not_o agree_v upon_o then_o whether_o saint_n be_v in_o heaven_n yet_o all_o agree_v that_o the_o angel_n be_v and_o they_o be_v altogether_o as_o well_o capacitate_v to_o hear_v and_o answer_v prayer_n which_o shall_v have_v be_v put_v up_o to_o they_o then_o as_o they_o be_v now_o and_o yet_o we_o find_v as_o little_a of_o man_n pray_v to_o angel_n as_o they_o do_v to_o saint_n in_o those_o time_n 3._o whatever_o reason_n can_v be_v assign_v for_o pray_v to_o creature_n now_o will_v have_v hold_v as_o well_o then_o whatever_o necessity_n or_o conveniency_n or_o advantage_n or_o fitness_n there_o may_v be_v in_o it_o be_v all_o the_o same_o and_o indeed_o much_o great_a then_o than_o they_o be_v now_o upon_o these_o two_o account_n 1._o because_o the_o christian_a religion_n be_v of_o itself_o a_o state_n of_o much_o great_a perfection_n than_o any_o dispensation_n that_o be_v before_o it_o god_n have_v in_o it_o reveal_v himself_o more_o clear_o and_o plain_o to_o the_o world_n have_v more_o evidence_v his_o love_n and_o tenderness_n to_o mankind_n have_v give_v we_o great_a encouragement_n to_o draw_v near_o to_o he_o he_o speak_v to_o we_o in_o the_o gospel_n as_o a_o father_n to_o his_o child_n as_o a_o reconcile_a father_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o therefore_o according_o in_o that_o form_n of_o prayer_n which_o our_o saviour_n have_v leave_v we_o that_o be_v the_o appellation_n which_o he_o have_v teach_v we_o to_o make_v use_n of_o our_o father_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n now_o why_o shall_v a_o child_n be_v afraid_a to_o approach_v the_o presence_n of_o his_o father_n or_o what_o need_n have_v he_o of_o any_o body_n to_o introduce_v he_o under_o the_o jewish_a dispensation_n when_o the_o law_n be_v give_v with_o thundering_n and_o lightning_n when_o god_n be_v call_v by_o the_o terrible_a name_n of_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n there_o may_v be_v more_o reason_n to_o think_v of_o some_o body_n to_o introduce_v they_o to_o his_o presence_n which_o yet_o we_o do_v not_o find_v be_v ever_o recommend_v or_o practise_v among_o they_o how_o much_o more_o may_v christian_n come_v with_o boldness_n to_o the_o throne_n of_o mercy_n and_o expect_v to_o find_v grace_n to_o help_v in_o time_n of_o need_n but_o what_o be_v more_o considerable_a 2._o christian_n have_v christ_n for_o their_o mediator_n who_o be_v able_a to_o save_v to_o the_o uttermost_a all_o those_o that_o come_v to_o god_n by_o he_o he_o be_v in_o heaven_n ready_a to_o plead_v their_o cause_n and_o to_o get_v their_o prayer_n hear_v and_o their_o person_n accept_v and_o they_o that_o have_v such_o a_o advocate_n need_v not_o fly_v to_o any_o else_o but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o the_o church_n before_o christ_n and_o therefore_o if_o the_o thing_n have_v be_v at_o all_o lawful_a they_o have_v much_o more_o reason_n to_o make_v saint_n and_o angel_n their_o patron_n than_o christian_n have_v and_o yet_o we_o see_v that_o in_o the_o account_n which_o we_o have_v in_o the_o bible_n of_o the_o church_n of_o god_n before_o christ_n for_o near_o 4000_o year_n there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o hint_n of_o any_o thing_n of_o this_o kind_n 3._o what_o i_o have_v say_v already_o that_o all_o along_o in_o the_o old_a testament_n prayer_n be_v appropriate_v to_o god_n and_o that_o without_o any_o reserve_n or_o distinction_n may_v be_v sufficient_a to_o show_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n in_o that_o case_n but_o i_o have_v this_o further_a to_o add_v that_o the_o same_o scripture_n add_v with_o the_o same_o general_a word_n condemn_v as_o idolatrous_a all_o the_o old_a heathen_a worship_n now_o i_o have_v show_v before_o that_o much_o of_o this_o worship_n be_v pay_v to_o creature_n under_o the_o same_o notion_n and_o apprehension_n that_o those_o of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n worship_n saint_n and_o angel_n indeed_o there_o be_v this_o difference_n that_o most_o of_o those_o worship_v in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n be_v probable_o good_a creature_n as_o most_o of_o those_o who_o the_o heathen_n worship_v be_v bad_a one_o and_o it_o may_v be_v devil_n but_o this_o distinction_n of_o good_a or_o bad_a creature_n may_v make_v the_o worship_n more_o or_o less_o impious_a but_o not_o more_o or_o less_o idolatrous_a whatever_o will_v make_v it_o idolatry_n in_o the_o one_o case_n will_v make_v it_o so_o in_o the_o other_o the_o worship_n appropriate_v to_o god_n be_v no_o more_o due_a to_o a_o good_a creature_n than_o it_o be_v to_o a_o bad_a one_o since_o therefore_o i_o have_v show_v that_o the_o scripture_n every_o where_o condemn_v the_o worship_n which_o the_o heathen_a give_v to_o what_o they_o own_v not_o to_o be_v god_n and_o which_o they_o do_v not_o intend_v to_o worship_n as_o the_o supreme_a god_n i_o say_v since_o this_o be_v condemn_v not_o only_o as_o impious_a for_o choose_v ill_a creature_n but_o as_o idolatrous_a for_o give_v what_o belong_v only_o to_o god_n this_o must_v equal_o prove_v all_o creature_n worship_n to_o be_v idolatrous_a 4._o this_o creature_n worship_n be_v as_o little_o hear_v of_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o old_a hear_v of_o it_o be_v indeed_o but_o what_o approbation_n it_o meet_v with_o we_o may_v see_v by_o consider_v these_o particular_n the_o first_o instance_n be_v that_o of_o the_o devil_n desire_v our_o saviour_n to_o worship_v he_o upon_o promise_n to_o give_v he_o all_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o world_n but_o let_v we_o see_v what_o our_o saviour_n answer_v he_o do_v not_o put_v he_o off_o with_o tell_v he_o either_o the_o dignity_n of_o his_o own_o person_n or_o the_o unfitness_n of_o the_o thing_n in_o worship_v he_o because_o he_o be_v a_o devil_n but_o he_o give_v such_o a_o reason_n as_o will_v hold_v against_o all_o worship_v of_o creature_n thou_o shall_v worship_v the_o lord_n thy_o god_n and_o he_o only_o shall_v thou_o serve_v from_o which_o word_n i_o will_v observe_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o that_o the_o worship_n which_o the_o devil_n desire_v and_o which_o our_o saviour_n say_v must_v be_v give_v only_o to_o god_n be_v not_o to_o offer_v sacrifice_n to_o he_o which_o the_o writer_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n make_v the_o only_a outward_a worship_n appropriate_v to_o god_n but_o it_o be_v to_o fall_v down_o and_o adore_v he_o from_o whence_o we_o may_v infer_v that_o to_o fall_v down_o and_o adore_v any_o creature_n must_v be_v idolatry_n which_o part_n of_o worship_n its_o apparent_a the_o church_n of_o rome_n give_v to_o their_o saint_n and_o angel_n 2._o i_o will_v observe_v here_o that_o the_o devil_n do_v not_o pretend_v to_o be_v the_o supreme_a god_n but_o plain_o the_o contrary_a for_o when_o he_o show_v our_o saviour_n all_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o world_n he_o tell_v he_o that_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v give_v to_o he_o luke_n 4.6_o in_o which_o he_o plain_o profess_v not_o a_o supreme_a but_o a_o delegated_a power_n so_o that_o have_v not_o our_o saviour_n in_o his_o answer_n condemn_v the_o worship_n of_o creature_n though_o own_a and_o acknowledge_v to_o be_v creature_n he_o have_v not_o give_v a_o full_a answer_n to_o the_o devil_n for_o the_o devil_n do_v not_o desire_v to_o be_v worship_v as_o the_o supreme_a god_n another_o
where_n accuse_v the_o arian_n of_o idolatry_n for_o worship_v of_o jesus_n christ_n for_o this_o very_a reason_n because_o they_o own_v he_o not_o to_o be_v god_n or_o at_o least_o not_o the_o supreme_a god_n from_o whence_o it_o plain_o appear_v that_o they_o have_v the_o same_o notion_n in_o this_o case_n that_o we_o now_o have_v that_o man_n may_v be_v guilty_a of_o idolatry_n in_o give_v divine_a worship_n to_o what_o they_o believe_v be_v not_o god_n three_o the_o apostle_n call_v covetousness_n idolatry_n which_o though_o it_o be_v a_o figurative_a expression_n yet_o however_o denote_v to_o we_o the_o thing_n for_o which_o i_o be_o now_o plead_v the_o covetous_a man_n do_v not_o look_v upon_o his_o money_n to_o be_v his_o god_n or_o intend_v to_o give_v it_o any_o of_o that_o worship_n he_o think_v due_a to_o god_n i_o believe_v no_o covetous_a man_n in_o the_o world_n can_v be_v just_o charge_v with_o either_o of_o these_o but_o because_o he_o place_v his_o heart_n and_o his_o affection_n upon_o it_o which_o ought_v to_o be_v give_v to_o none_o but_o god_n because_o his_o money_n be_v the_o thing_n in_o which_o he_o put_v his_o trust_n and_o his_o confidence_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o he_o be_v say_v to_o make_v a_o idol_n of_o it_o and_o to_o be_v guilty_a of_o idolatry_n and_o so_o it_o be_v as_o to_o the_o worship_v of_o saint_n though_o their_o worshipper_n know_v very_o well_o that_o they_o be_v not_o god_n yet_o because_o they_o give_v they_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n that_o outward_a adoration_n and_o inward_a reverence_n hope_v trust_v and_o dependence_n which_o be_v due_a only_o to_o god_n they_o do_v by_o that_o make_v they_o idol_n and_o be_v just_o chargeable_a with_o idolatry_n i_o now_o proceed_v to_o the_o second_o point_n to_o show_v that_o the_o worship_n which_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n give_v to_o the_o bless_a virgin_n and_o other_o saint_n by_o the_o invocation_n practise_v among_o they_o be_v divine_a worship_n such_o as_o ought_v to_o be_v give_v to_o none_o but_o god_n we_o be_v not_o concern_v at_o present_a to_o inquire_v into_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n but_o into_o
