prosperity_n and_o adversity_n in_o the_o first_o of_o these_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o converse_v with_o god_n and_o not_o with_o the_o creature_n comfort_v which_o we_o do_v enjoy_v from_o he_o as_o one_o may_v show_v at_o large_a but_o i_o be_o to_o speak_v of_o the_o latter_a and_o to_o show_v how_o we_o ought_v to_o converse_v with_o god_n in_o that_o but_o first_o i_o must_v demonstrate_v that_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o do_v it_o which_o be_v the_o three_o thing_n i_o promise_v viz._n to_o show_v that_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n people_n to_o study_v to_o converse_v with_o he_o aright_o in_o the_o way_n of_o his_o judgement_n in_o a_o time_n of_o affliction_n and_o here_o i_o hope_v i_o need_v not_o be_v at_o pain_n to_o prove_v by_o scripture_n that_o beside_o the_o general_a business_n of_o a_o christian_n life_n some_o particular_a and_o more_o especial_a behaviour_n be_v require_v of_o he_o in_o a_o afflict_a state_n all_o will_v grant_v it_o sure_o beside_o by_o that_o time_n i_o shall_v have_v declare_v what_o they_o be_v i_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o prove_v that_o they_o be_v therefore_o for_o the_o present_a i_o shall_v content_v myself_o to_o give_v in_o three_o or_o four_o reason_n of_o it_o and_o so_o pass_v on_o it_o be_v especial_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n people_n to_o study_v to_o converse_v with_o he_o aright_o in_o the_o time_n of_o affliction_n 1._o because_o then_o especial_o it_o be_v hard_o to_o do_v it_o we_o be_v then_o very_o apt_a to_o be_v take_v off_o from_o it_o therefore_o we_o shall_v then_o particular_a affliction_n but_o that_o will_v be_v too_o long_o i_o will_v only_o instance_n in_o one_o or_o two_o for_o explication_n the_o sickness_n and_o painedness_n of_o the_o body_n call_v out_o the_o mind_n to_o seek_v after_o and_o converse_v with_o physician_n bodily_a want_n call_v we_o to_o seek_v after_o bodily_a supply_n and_o so_o all_o kind_n of_o distress_n call_v out_o the_o soul_n to_o seek_v creature-relief_n call_v upon_o the_o sick_a and_o languish_a patient_n to_o call_v upon_o and_o hang_v upon_o divine_a help_n to_o converse_v with_o god_n alas_o he_o have_v enough_o to_o do_v to_o attend_v upon_o his_o pain_n and_o pang_n tell_v he_o of_o ease_n of_o recovery_n and_o he_o can_v hearken_v to_o you_o for_o that_o be_v the_o news_n that_o he_o belong_v to_o hear_v call_v upon_o the_o poor_a pine_a beggar_n to_o seek_v relief_n of_o god_n to_o converse_v with_o he_o alas_o he_o find_v such_o a_o faintness_n in_o his_o limb_n such_o a_o gnaw_a of_o hunger_n such_o a_o restless_a appetite_n within_o himself_o that_o he_o can_v groan_v out_o nothing_o but_o oh_o that_o one_o will_v give_v i_o bread_n to_o eat_v in_o a_o word_n the_o soul_n be_v more_o natural_o addict_v to_o mind_v its_o body_n to_o which_o it_o be_v join_v than_o the_o god_n that_o join_v it_o to_o that_o body_n hence_o you_o may_v observe_v two_o thing_n by_o the_o way_n viz_o 1._o the_o reason_n why_o so_o few_o person_n repent_v in_o time_n of_o sickness_n the_o sense_n of_o sickness_n drown_v the_o sense_n of_o sin_n 2._o the_o reason_n why_o so_o few_o poor_a people_n who_o be_v ever_o more_o conflict_v with_o the_o necessity_n of_o the_o body_n do_v not_o at_o all_o mind_n the_o concernment_n of_o their_o soul_n the_o exigency_n and_o strait_n of_o the_o body_n do_v cry_v loud_o in_o their_o heart_n than_o all_o the_o word_n and_o work_n of_o god_n so_o that_o as_o health_n be_v the_o best_a time_n for_o repentance_n so_o it_o seem_v that_o the_o best_a way_n to_o teach_v the_o poor_a be_v to_o relieve_v they_o 2._o the_o corruption_n of_o the_o heart_n be_v then_o most_o apt_a to_o make_v war_n against_o heaven_n this_o be_v the_o opinion_n will_v go_v cry_v after_o he_o when_o he_o take_v away_o any_o darling_n from_o it_o as_o phaltiel_n go_v cry_v after_o his_o wife_n or_o rather_o cry_v against_o he_o as_o micah_n cry_v against_o the_o man_n of_o dan_n say_v you_o have_v take_v away_o my_o god_n and_o be_v go_v away_o and_o what_o have_v i_o more_o judg._n 18._o 24._o 3._o temptation_n do_v then_o come_v strong_a from_o without_o then_o it_o be_v the_o devil_n time_n to_o play_v his_o game_n what_o put_v up_o this_o reproach_n what_o will_v you_o sit_v down_o with_o this_o loss_n up_o and_o revenge_v thyself_o he_o that_o know_v so_o well_o the_o temper_n of_o man_n heart_n so_o ready_a to_o curse_v god_n when_o he_o touch_v he_o job_n 2._o 5._o will_v not_o fail_v to_o touch_v the_o heart_n and_o tempt_v it_o to_o curse_v he_o indeed_o job_n 2._o 9_o curse_v god_n and_o die_v i_o have_v go_v through_o the_o doctrinal_a part_n of_o my_o discourse_n upon_o these_o word_n which_o be_v the_o thing_n i_o main_o translation_n render_v well_o take_v little_a notice_n of_o the_o metaphor_n whilst_o we_o be_v at_o home_n in_o the_o body_n we_o be_v absent_a from_o the_o lord_n though_o indeed_o if_o they_o have_v leave_v out_o that_o word_n at_o home_n it_o will_v have_v be_v as_o well_o and_o so_o have_v neglect_v the_o metaphor_n altogether_o as_o we_o may_v haply_o hint_n hereafter_o the_o word_n think_v agree_v upon_o to_o be_v no_o more_o than_o whilst_o we_o carry_v about_o with_o we_o this_o corruptible_a flesh_n whilst_o we_o live_v this_o natural_a animal_n life_n it_o only_o signify_v man_n in_o his_o compound_a animal_n state_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d and_o do_v not_o at_o all_o allude_v to_o his_o sinful_a unregenerate_a or_o carnal_a state_n but_o the_o latter_a phrase_n absent_n from_o the_o lord_n be_v capable_a of_o a_o double_a sense_n both_o good_a and_o true_a and_o i_o think_v both_o fit_a enough_o to_o the_o context_n and_o drift_n of_o the_o apostle_n i_o shall_v speak_v to_o both_o but_o insist_v most_o upon_o the_o latter_a 1._o whilst_o we_o be_v in_o the_o body_n we_o be_v absent_a from_o the_o lord_n i._n e._n from_o the_o bodily_a presence_n of_o inherit_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n for_o by_o flesh_n and_o blood_n there_o must_v needs_o be_v mean_v man_n in_o this_o animal_n corruptible_a state_n and_o so_o the_o apostle_n accuse_v this_o kind_n of_o life_n in_o the_o body_n and_z as_o it_o be_v blame_v it_o for_o stand_v between_o he_o and_o his_o glorify_a lord_n and_o so_o consequent_o between_o he_o and_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o but_o concern_v the_o gratify_n of_o the_o appetite_n see_v there_o must_v be_v in_o we_o a_o sensitive_a appetite_n whilst_o we_o be_v in_o this_o animal_n state_n it_o be_v to_o be_v endeavour_v as_o far_o as_o may_v be_v that_o we_o gratify_v the_o appetite_n not_o as_o it_o be_v a_o sensitive_a appetite_n but_o under_o this_o notion_n as_o the_o thing_n that_o it_o desire_n make_v for_o our_o real_a good_a and_o tend_v to_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o supreme_a good_a to_o eat_v and_o drink_v not_o because_o we_o be_v hungry_a or_o thirsty_a because_o the_o appetite_n desire_v it_o but_o with_o reference_n to_o the_o main_a end_n with_o respect_n to_o the_o high_a good_a that_o the_o body_n may_v be_v enable_v strengthen_v and_o quicken_v to_o wait_v upon_o the_o soul_n cheerful_o in_o the_o action_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n but_o this_o man_n in_o his_o animal_n state_n can_v perfect_o attain_v to_o which_o show_v that_o the_o appetite_n do_v keep_v we_o at_o a_o distance_n from_o god_n 3._o the_o fancy_n this_o also_o keep_v a_o man_n at_o a_o distance_n from_o god_n and_o hinder_v we_o in_o the_o knowledge_n and_o service_n of_o god_n and_o interrupt_v the_o soul_n communion_n with_o god_n this_o be_v a_o busy_a and_o petulant_a faculty_n or_o inward_a sense_n and_o the_o soul_n do_v ready_o sensate_a the_o passion_n of_o it_o so_o that_o it_o do_v frequent_o hinder_v its_o mental_a operation_n and_o become_v a_o great_a snare_n a_o work_a fancy_n how_o much_o soever_o it_o be_v magnify_v by_o the_o wisdom_n of_o this_o world_n be_v a_o mighty_a a_o serious_a soul_n especial_o in_o hot_a and_o dry_a constitution_n where_o it_o be_v common_o most_o pregnant_a and_o most_o impatient_a of_o discipline_n and_o i_o confess_v i_o have_v often_o wonder_v at_o the_o soul_n readiness_n to_o be_v so_o speedy_o affect_v with_o the_o phantasm_n and_o imagination_n of_o it_o and_o fondness_n to_o hug_v they_o so_o dear_o this_o indeed_o if_o it_o be_v so_o far_o refine_v as_o to_o present_v sober_a and_o solid_a imagination_n to_o the_o mind_n and_o to_o act_v in_o subservience_n to_o sanctify_a reason_n be_v a_o excellent_a handmaid_n to_o the_o soul_n in_o many_o of_o her_o function_n but_o otherwise_o be_v a_o snare_n as_o we_o have_v partly_o observe_v already_o and_o may_v observe_v more_o if_o we_o study_v the_o secret_n of_o our_o own_o soul_n and_o the_o mighty_a mystery_n that_o be_v within_o we_o and_o this_o do_v not_o only_o ordinary_o disturb_v distract_v and_o hinder_v in_o ordinary_a duty_n but_o even_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v at_o the_o high_a pitch_n of_o communion_n and_o contemplation_n it_o assay_v to_o pull_v it_o down_o to_o attend_v to_o its_o vain_a phantasm_n and_o indeed_o give_v it_o many_o a_o grievous_a fall_n i_o doubt_v not_o to_o affirm_v that_o this_o be_v the_o most_o pernicious_a enemy_n of_o the_o three_o that_o i_o name_v to_o the_o soul_n happiness_n as_o may_v appear_v in_o many_o respect_n i_o will_v only_o name_v one_o it_o have_v a_o advantage_n against_o we_o which_o neither_o of_o the_o other_o two_o have_v it_o infest_v we_o and_o annoy_v we_o sleep_v as_o well_o as_o wake_v in_o sleep_n the_o sense_n be_v lock_v up_o and_o the_o appetite_n be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n silent_a from_o its_o beg_n but_o then_o the_o fancy_n be_v as_o busy_a and_o tumultuous_a as_o ever_o form_v and_o gather_v imagination_n and_o those_o be_v common_o wild_a and_o senseless_a if_o not_o worse_o the_o mind_n in_o way_n of_o kindness_n and_o benevolence_n to_o the_o body_n suspend_v its_o own_o act_n whilst_o the_o body_n take_v its_o rest_n in_o the_o night_n and_o then_o the_o rude_a fancy_n take_v its_o opportunity_n to_o wander_v at_o liberty_n as_o be_v without_o its_o keeper_n and_o act_n to_o the_o disturbance_n of_o the_o body_n but_o that_o be_v not_o the_o worst_a for_o it_o become_v so_o tumultuous_a and_o impetuous_a sometime_o as_o that_o it_o awaken_v the_o mind_n to_o attend_v upon_o its_o imagination_n and_o this_o the_o soul_n do_v condescend_v to_o in_o a_o inordinate_a manner_n and_o set_v the_o stamp_n of_o sinfulness_n upon_o they_o to_o its_o own_o wound_n and_o now_o that_o i_o be_o speak_v of_o sleep_n as_o a_o mantissa_n to_o this_o discourse_n i_o can_v but_o observe_v how_o this_o very_a thing_n also_o keep_v we_o at_o a_o distance_n from_o god_n in_o this_o animal_n state_n how_o be_v our_o communion_n with_o god_n interrupt_v by_o this_o for_o herein_o we_o cease_v not_o only_o from_o the_o action_n of_o a_o animal_n life_n but_o common_o from_o the_o action_n of_o a_o spiritual_a life_n too_o what_o a_o great_a breach_n what_o a_o sad_a intercision_n be_v there_o make_v in_o our_o converse_n with_o god_n by_o this_o mean_n such_o a_o poor_a happiness_n it_o be_v that_o we_o have_v in_o this_o world_n that_o it_o be_v cut_v off_o and_o seem_v as_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v one_o four_o part_n of_o our_o
