themselves_o to_o the_o trouble_n of_o examine_v the_o motion_n which_o they_o have_v follow_v whence_o they_o have_v come_v but_o it_o be_v very_o palpable_a to_o every_o man_n that_o with_o a_o discern_a eye_n and_o unbiased_a mind_n look_v upon_o they_o sometime_o the_o lust_n of_o the_o eye_n covetousness_n and_o ambition_n lap_n itself_o in_o the_o mantle_n of_o conscience_n come_v see_v my_o zeal_n 10.16_o 2_o king_n 10.16_o for_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n say_v jehu_n when_o every_o man_n know_v that_o it_o be_v somewhat_o else_o and_o not_o true_a zeal_n that_o make_v he_o drive_v so_o furious_o yea_o some_o may_v go_v so_o far_o as_o not_o only_o to_o deceive_v other_o but_o themselves_o also_o in_o this_o point_n as_o in_o their_o deny_v tithe_n and_o other_o payment_n it_o be_v too_o too_o palpable_a that_o covetousness_n have_v take_v the_o place_n and_o office_n of_o conscience_n and_o yet_o set_v so_o bold_a a_o face_n upon_o it_o as_o if_o it_o be_v pure_a conscience_n that_o guide_v these_o man_n to_o such_o practice_n sometime_o that_o lust_n of_o malice_n and_o revenge_n may_v put_v we_o forward_o to_o serve_v it_o under_o the_o notion_n of_o conscience_n so_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n persecute_v christ_n out_o of_o malice_n and_o yet_o with_o a_o great_a show_n of_o zeal_n and_o conscience_n and_o those_o other_o of_o who_o our_o saviour_n foretell_v that_o they_o will_v persecute_v his_o apostle_n 16.2_o joh._n 16.2_o and_o very_o think_v they_o do_v god_n good_a service_n in_o do_v it_o now_o if_o any_o inquire_v of_o the_o manner_n how_o these_o lust_n come_v to_o prevail_v so_o far_o as_o to_o deceive_v we_o under_o the_o name_n of_o conscience_n i_o need_v say_v no_o more_o than_o i_o do_v upon_o the_o former_a head_n viz_o that_o the_o impetuousness_n of_o these_o motion_n in_o the_o mind_n may_v be_v apt_a to_o make_v we_o mistake_v they_o for_o some_o extraordinary_a inspiration_n which_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o resist_v but_o to_o undeceive_v we_o in_o this_o point_n it_o may_v be_v very_o useful_a to_o consider_v 1._o that_o what_o motion_n soever_o do_v incline_v we_o to_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v forbid_v by_o the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v evil_a and_o to_o be_v reject_v now_o the_o motion_n of_o lust_n do_v always_o stir_v we_o up_o to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o god_n law_n and_o therefore_o be_v to_o be_v oppose_v though_o never_o so_o suitable_a and_o grateful_a to_o our_o sensitive_a appetite_n 8.20_o isa_n 8.20_o to_o the_o law_n and_o to_o the_o testimony_n we_o ought_v to_o look_v and_o whatsoever_o person_n or_o motion_n be_v contrary_a to_o that_o this_o very_a thing_n be_v sufficient_a to_o convince_v we_o that_o they_o be_v not_o of_o god_n 2._o if_o we_o find_v ourselves_o to_o be_v zealous_o carry_v forward_o only_o in_o some_o thing_n that_o tend_v to_o our_o own_o profit_n or_o pleasure_n and_o careless_a and_o remiss_a in_o other_o thing_n we_o have_v great_a reason_n to_o conclude_v these_o zealous_a motion_n not_o to_o proceed_v from_o conscience_n but_o a_o worse_a principle_n 29._o 2_o king_n 10.28_o 29._o jehu_n destroy_v baal_n out_o of_o israel_n and_o be_v very_o zealous_a in_o it_o as_o that_o which_o be_v a_o fair_a pretence_n for_o cut_v off_o the_o house_n of_o ahab_n that_o none_o may_v be_v leave_v to_o lay_v claim_n to_o the_o crown_n and_o also_o to_o dazzle_v the_o eye_n of_o the_o people_n that_o they_o may_v not_o rise_v up_o in_o opposition_n to_o he_o who_o show_v himself_o so_o zealous_a in_o execute_v the_o lord_n pleasure_n but_o from_o the_o sin_n of_o jeroboam_n the_o son_n of_o nebat_fw-la the_o serve_v of_o the_o golden_a calf_n at_o dan_n and_o bethel_n from_o these_o he_o depart_v not_o because_o he_o think_v the_o continuance_n of_o this_o to_o be_v a_o good_a piece_n of_o policy_n to_o keep_v the_o people_n from_o return_v to_o jerusalem_n to_o worship_n lest_o they_o shall_v also_o carry_v back_o the_o kingdom_n to_o the_o house_n of_o david_n hereby_o jehu_n do_v discover_v that_o it_o be_v not_o zeal_n for_o god_n but_o covetousness_n and_o ambition_n that_o make_v he_o so_o strict_a in_o obey_v god_n command_v in_o other_o respect_n and_o if_o any_o man_n find_v the_o same_o temper_n and_o tendency_n in_o his_o zeal_n he_o will_v have_v just_a reason_n to_o suspect_v the_o same_o thing_n concern_v it_o 3._o satan_n temptation_n and_o suggestion_n may_v sometime_o impose_v upon_o man_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o conscience_n and_o inspiration_n from_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o that_o satan_n have_v a_o art_n to_o transform_v himself_o into_o a_o angel_n of_o light_n 11.14_o 2_o cor._n 11.14_o to_o represent_v his_o temptation_n as_o the_o advice_n of_o some_o good_a angel_n or_o as_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o god_n he_o have_v the_o impudence_n to_o cite_v the_o scripture_n in_o his_o tempt_n of_o our_o saviour_n 4.6_o mat._n 4.6_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_n if_o he_o seduce_v so_o many_o ignorant_a people_n to_o pervert_v the_o scripture_n for_o the_o encourage_n of_o themselves_o to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v quite_o contrary_a to_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o scripture_n yea_o we_o have_v very_o strong_a reason_n to_o persuade_v we_o that_o those_o rapture_n and_o enthusiasm_n which_o have_v possess_v some_o of_o they_o have_v be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o high_a
