history_n which_o be_v all_o beyond_o the_o comprehension_n of_o person_n of_o mean_a and_o vulgar_a understanding_n who_o be_v therefore_o oblige_v in_o all_o such_o matter_n as_o these_o to_o submit_v to_o the_o determination_n of_o their_o lawful_a guide_n and_o governor_n but_o as_o for_o the_o great_a and_o necessary_a matter_n of_o religion_n they_o be_v plain_a and_o obvious_a to_o the_o mean_a understanding_n and_o consequent_o herein_o every_o man_n ought_v to_o exercise_v his_o natural_a right_n of_o judge_v for_o himself_o and_o not_o swallow_v his_o religion_n blindfold_a without_o try_v it_o by_o the_o test_n of_o his_o reason_n and_o certain_o they_o who_o remove_v the_o cognizance_n of_o religion_n out_o of_o the_o court_n of_o reason_n take_v away_o that_o which_o do_v most_o proper_o and_o natural_o fall_v under_o its_o determination_n for_o religion_n be_v the_o chief_a end_n of_o man_n creation_n as_o he_o be_v a_o reasonable_a be_v and_o thereby_o capable_a of_o religion_n and_o to_o be_v sure_a where_o the_o end_n be_v natural_a the_o mean_n must_v be_v so_o too_o and_o therefore_o as_o horse_n that_o be_v make_v for_o burden_n have_v a_o natural_a ability_n to_o bear_v and_o as_o bird_n that_o be_v make_v to_o fly_v have_v a_o faculty_n and_o wing_n for_o that_o purpose_n so_o rational_a soul_n that_o be_v make_v for_o religion_n must_v needs_o be_v suppose_v to_o have_v some_o power_n natural_o place_v in_o they_o for_o the_o exercise_n and_o judgement_n and_o choice_n of_o it_o and_o what_o else_o can_v that_o be_v but_o their_o reason_n so_o that_o to_o deny_v man_n the_o liberty_n to_o judge_v for_o themselves_o in_o that_o which_o be_v their_o natural_a end_n and_o high_a interest_n be_v as_o great_a a_o piece_n of_o violence_n and_o injustice_n as_o can_v be_v offer_v to_o humane_a nature_n and_o of_o this_o very_a matter_n the_o church_n of_o rome_n be_v high_o guilty_a for_o it_o command_v assent_v without_o evidence_n and_o imperious_o require_v man_n to_o believe_v her_o doctrine_n without_o examination_n to_o rely_v implicit_o upon_o her_o authority_n and_o swallow_v down_o her_o faith_n by_o the_o lump_n be_v vicious_a or_o destructive_a to_o government_n their_o wicked_a practice_n be_v just_o punishable_a according_a to_o the_o proportion_n of_o its_o malignity_n for_o otherwise_o man_n right_a of_o judge_v for_o themselves_o will_v soon_o be_v make_v a_o sanctuary_n for_o all_o the_o villainy_n in_o the_o world_n and_o though_o no_o man_n ought_v to_o be_v punish_v bare_o for_o his_o opinion_n yet_o he_o may_v be_v just_o punish_v for_o practise_v his_o opinion_n though_o his_o practice_n be_v indifferent_a in_o its_o own_o nature_n for_o indifferent_a thing_n which_o god_n have_v neither_o command_v nor_o forbid_v be_v the_o proper_a matter_n of_o all_o humane_a law_n and_o therefore_o if_o upon_o a_o false_a opinion_n that_o what_o the_o law_n enjoin_v be_v not_o indifferent_a but_o be_v always_o punctual_o observe_v in_o the_o church_n of_o england_n for_o it_o neither_o damn_v nor_o censure_v persecute_v nor_o destroy_v man_n upon_o the_o score_n of_o difference_n in_o opinion_n provide_v their_o opinion_n do_v not_o lead_v they_o to_o wicked_a or_o seditious_a practice_n but_o hope_v well_o of_o all_o that_o live_v well_o and_o receive_v all_o into_o its_o she_o and_o this_o every_o church_n must_v necessary_o do_v that_o value_v its_o own_o peace_n and_o preservation_n but_o it_o pretend_v not_o to_o invade_v the_o liberty_n of_o their_o thought_n or_o to_o lay_v rigid_a restraint_n on_o their_o opinion_n and_o so_o long_o as_o they_o dissent_v from_o we_o modest_o and_o peaceable_o they_o may_v enjoy_v their_o own_o opinion_n and_o our_o towards_o he_o and_o gasp_v all_o the_o while_o it_o continue_v in_o be_v after_o a_o happiness_n it_o shall_v never_o enjoy_v as_o for_o other_o being_n we_o see_v they_o have_v no_o natural_a desire_n in_o vain_a the_o good_a god_n have_v so_o order_v thing_n that_o there_o be_v object_n in_o nature_n apportion_v to_o all_o their_o natural_a appetite_n but_o if_o there_o be_v no_o state_n of_o happiness_n reserve_v for_o good_a man_n in_o the_o other_o world_n we_o be_v by_o a_o natural_a principle_n most_o strong_o incline_v to_o that_o which_o we_o can_v never_o attain_v to_o as_o if_o god_n have_v purposely_o frame_v we_o with_o such_o inclination_n that_o we_o may_v be_v perpetual_o torment_v between_o those_o two_o passion_n desire_v and_o despair_n a_o earnest_a propension_n after_o a_o future_a happiness_n and_o a_o utter_a incapacity_n of_o ever_o enjoy_v it_o as_o if_o nature_n itself_o whereby_o all_o other_o being_n be_v dispose_v to_o their_o divine_a providence_n in_o this_o world_n we_o see_v little_a or_o no_o distinction_n make_v between_o they_o but_o as_o the_o wise_a man_n have_v observe_v eccl._n ix_o 2._o all_o thing_n come_v alike_o to_o all_o so_o that_o he_o can_v know_v god_n love_n or_o hatred_n by_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v before_o we_o nay_o many_o time_n we_o see_v the_o wicked_a as_o the_o psalmist_n describe_v they_o flourish_v like_o a_o green_a bay-tree_n psal._n xxxvii_o 35._o whilst_o the_o righteous_a be_v sore_o oppress_v and_o crush_v under_o the_o triumphal_a chariot_n of_o their_o barbarous_a enemy_n so_o that_o be_v there_o no_o other_o state_n of_o thing_n but_o what_o we_o see_v before_o we_o it_o will_v be_v impossible_a for_o we_o to_o give_v any_o tolerable_a account_n of_o the_o just_a retribution_n of_o the_o divine_a providence_n for_o if_o when_o we_o have_v all_o act_v our_o part_n upon_o this_o stage_n of_o time_n we_o be_v to_o lie_v down_o together_o and_o sleep_v dishonourable_a grave_n and_o on_o the_o contrary_a how_o many_o million_o of_o million_o of_o wicked_a man_n be_v there_o who_o whole_a life_n have_v be_v nothing_o but_o one_o continue_a act_n of_o rebellion_n against_o god_n who_o have_v blaspheme_v his_o honour_n and_o affront_v his_o authority_n and_o open_o contemn_v all_o the_o law_n of_o his_o government_n and_o yet_o will_v undergo_v no_o other_o punishment_n for_o so_o do_v but_o only_o to_o live_v prosperous_o to_o die_v quiet_o and_o then_o to_o be_v glorious_o enshrine_v in_o monument_n of_o marble_n and_o can_v we_o think_v this_o and_o at_o the_o same_o time_n believe_v that_o there_o be_v a_o righteous_a providence_n which_o superintend_v the_o affair_n of_o the_o world_n certain_o if_o not_o to_o govern_v this_o material_a world_n and_o to_o put_v thing_n into_o such_o a_o regular_a course_n as_o may_v be_v suitable_a to_o their_o nature_n and_o the_o operation_n for_o which_o they_o be_v design_v will_v argue_v some_o defect_n of_o wisdom_n in_o god_n then_o doubtless_o not_o to_o compensate_a virtue_n and_o vice_n and_o adjust_a thing_n suitable_o to_o their_o qualification_n but_o thus_o cross_o to_o couple_v prosperity_n with_o vice_n and_o misery_n with_o virtue_n will_v argue_v he_o deficient_a both_o in_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n and_o justice._n and_o perhaps_o it_o will_v be_v no_o less_o expedient_a with_o epicurus_n to_o deny_v all_o providence_n than_o to_o ascribe_v to_o it_o such_o defect_n it_o be_v less_o unworthy_a of_o the_o divine_a nature_n to_o neglect_v the_o universe_n altogether_o than_o to_o administer_v humane_a affair_n with_o so_o much_o injustice_n and_o irregularity_n so_o that_o either_o we_o must_v deny_v providence_n or_o which_o be_v worse_o deny_v the_o justice_n of_o it_o or_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v a_o future_a state_n wherein_o all_o thing_n shall_v be_v adjust_v and_o good_a man_n crown_v with_o the_o reward_n of_o their_o obedience_n and_o the_o wicked_a undergo_v the_o punishment_n of_o their_o own_o folly_n for_o this_o we_o be_v sure_a of_o that_o the_o judge_n of_o all_o the_o world_n will_v do_v righteous_o and_o that_o first_o or_o last_o he_o will_v distribute_v his_o reward_n and_o punishment_n according_a to_o the_o merit_n and_o demerit_n of_o his_o subject_n and_o therefore_o because_o we_o see_v he_o do_v not_o ordinary_o do_v it_o in_o this_o world_n we_o have_v great_a reason_n to_o conclude_v that_o he_o will_v do_v it_o effectual_o in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v four_o and_o last_o that_o there_o be_v a_o state_n of_o future_a happiness_n prepare_v for_o good_a man_n be_v evident_a from_o the_o revelation_n of_o his_o will_n which_o god_n have_v make_v to_o we_o by_o jesus_n christ._n and_o this_o i_o confess_v be_v the_o most_o conclude_a argument_n of_o all_o as_o for_o the_o former_a argument_n they_o render_v the_o case_n so_o high_o probable_a that_o this_o at_o least_o must_v be_v acknowledge_v that_o we_o have_v far_o more_o reason_n to_o believe_v and_o expect_v a_o future_a happiness_n than_o we_o have_v to_o doubt_v or_o despair_v of_o it_o but_o as_o for_o this_o last_o it_o put_v all_o out_o of_o question_n and_o leave_v we_o no_o pretence_n of_o reason_n why_o we_o shall_v doubt_v or_o suspect_v it_o for_o eternal_a happiness_n and_o salvation_n be_v the_o great_a can_v endure_v the_o least_o contradiction_n but_o expect_v all_o judgement_n shall_v bow_v to_o they_o and_o receive_v their_o imperious_a dictate_v for_o oracle_n and_o be_v ready_a to_o censure_v all_o that_o dissent_n from_o they_o as_o man_n of_o reprobate_a mind_n and_o to_o hate_v and_o persecute_v they_o because_o they_o can_v believe_v as_o fast_o as_o they_o as_o if_o no_o man_n have_v a_o right_a to_o carry_v his_o eye_n in_o his_o own_o head_n but_o they_o and_o their_o understanding_n be_v to_o be_v a_o rule_n and_o standard_n to_o the_o whole_a world_n if_o another_o man_n
