not_o know_v the_o whole_a new_a testament_n be_v the_o general_n rule_n of_o faith_n to_o all_o christian_n as_o the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n have_v declare_v and_o the_o doctrine_n he_o have_v insist_v on_o be_v the_o doctrine_n absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v by_o those_o who_o be_v not_o christian_n to_o make_v they_o christian_n of_o unbeliever_n into_o the_o church_n his_o second_o reason_n be_v because_o it_o do_v not_o answer_v the_o full_a sense_n and_o intent_n of_o revelation_n which_o be_v the_o only_a reason_n and_o measure_n of_o our_o faith_n answ._n here_o i_o must_v observe_v it_o do_v answer_v the_o full_a sense_n and_o intent_n of_o revelation_n as_o to_o what_o the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n not_o to_o insist_v on_o any_o thing_n as_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n but_o what_o revelation_n the_o only_a reason_n and_o measure_n of_o our_o faith_n in_o this_o case_n do_v declare_v be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o that_o end_n whoever_o affirm_v any_o doctrine_n though_o the_o doctrine_n itself_o be_v reveal_v be_v absolute_o the_o ground_n foundation_n and_o reason_n of_o the_o belief_n in_o both_o case_n be_v the_o very_a same_o and_o be_v a_o authority_n distinct_a from_o christ_n in_o the_o next_o place_n the_o author_n of_o the_o animadversion_n relate_v what_o he_o think_v be_v the_o main_a design_n of_o the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n in_o these_o word_n the_o such_o a_o scheme_n of_o those_o matter_n of_o faith_n only_o that_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christistian_n as_o he_o find_v deliver_v in_o the_o scripture_n but_o not_o to_o lay_v down_o such_o a_o scheme_n of_o those_o matter_n of_o faith_n as_o he_o find_v in_o scripture_n which_o any_o man_n after_o he_o be_v a_o christian_n may_v be_v necessary_o oblige_v to_o believe_v the_o reason_n why_o the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n do_v not_o rest_v satisfy_v with_o those_o collection_n of_o article_n which_o be_v to_o be_v meet_v with_o in_o the_o common_a system_n do_v not_o appear_v to_o be_v because_o all_o or_o most_o or_o perhaps_o any_o of_o the_o article_n in_o some_o of_o those_o system_n be_v without_o any_o sufficient_a warrant_n from_o scripture_n though_o it_o may_v be_v the_o composer_n of_o those_o system_n may_v assert_v something_o concern_v several_a of_o those_o article_n for_o which_o there_o may_v not_o be_v any_o sufficient_a warrant_n from_o scripture_n there_o may_v be_v sufficient_a warrant_n from_o scripture_n for_o the_o article_n themselves_o and_o not_o the_o like_a warrant_n for_o every_o thing_n those_o author_n may_v deliver_v concern_v they_o but_o the_o reason_n why_o he_o be_v not_o satisfy_v with_o those_o collection_n seem_v to_o i_o to_o be_v 1._o because_o those_o collection_n do_v not_o agree_v some_o of_o they_o consist_v of_o more_o some_o of_o few_o article_n and_o those_o which_o have_v the_o great_a number_n leave_v out_o some_o of_o the_o article_n which_o be_v insist_v on_o or_o insert_v in_o another_o 2._o because_o it_o be_v pretend_v by_o the_o composer_n of_o those_o system_n of_o their_o follower_n or_o both_o that_o all_o the_o article_n collect_v into_o those_o system_n be_v necessary_o to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n now_o according_a to_o that_o notion_n what_o certain_o can_v there_o be_v who_o be_v christian_n or_o to_o be_v admit_v and_o own_a as_o such_o whilst_o there_o be_v so_o great_a a_o disagreement_n concern_v the_o article_n which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n for_o those_o who_o be_v christian_n according_a to_o the_o composer_n and_o follower_n of_o one_o system_n be_v not_o christian_n according_a to_o the_o follower_n of_o another_o because_o they_o want_v something_o in_o their_o judgement_n absolute_o necessary_a to_o make_v they_o christian_n the_o design_n of_o those_o who_o write_v system_n of_o christian_a divinity_n i_o apprehend_v shall_v be_v to_o collect_v those_o article_n which_o be_v main_o insist_v on_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n and_o to_o which_o most_o or_o all_o that_o be_v deliver_v in_o those_o sacred_a write_n may_v be_v pertinent_o and_o convenient_o reduce_v together_o with_o a_o account_n of_o the_o principal_a thing_n there_o teach_v concern_v those_o article_n and_o if_o the_o composer_n of_o system_n do_v careful_o distinguish_v the_o article_n those_o sacred_a write_n teach_v be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n from_o those_o which_o be_v of_o great_a moment_n to_o be_v know_v and_o believe_v by_o they_o who_o be_v already_o christian_n i_o be_o of_o opinion_n the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n will_v not_o think_v their_o do_v so_o any_o blemish_n to_o their_o system_n and_o that_o he_o will_v not_o be_v dissatisfy_v with_o any_o of_o those_o article_n of_o which_o their_o system_n shall_v consist_v nor_o with_o any_o thing_n they_o shall_v say_v concern_v those_o
believe_v every_o one_o of_o they_o and_o make_v such_o use_n of_o they_o as_o christ_n require_v in_o short_a though_o he_o repent_v true_o of_o his_o sin_n turn_v to_o the_o lord_n hearty_o and_o may_v be_v best_a discern_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o act_n first_o vindication_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n etc._n etc._n p._n 14._o this_o point_n be_v so_o full_o clear_v and_o strong_o vain_a to_o look_v for_o they_o all_o there_o where_o they_o be_v not_o all_o to_o be_v find_v which_o be_v the_o reason_n say_v the_o author_n of_o the_o animadversion_n that_o i_o give_v the_o title_n of_o a_o vindication_n of_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o former_a part_n of_o these_o paper_n answ._n the_o former_a part_n of_o these_o animadversion_n be_v design_v to_o answer_v the_o reason_n why_o the_o title_n a_o vindication_n of_o the_o epistle_n be_v give_v to_o it_o we_o be_v not_o to_o look_v for_o proof_n of_o their_o divine_a authority_n that_o be_v acknowledge_v on_o mr._n edward_n do_v suppose_v the_o belief_n of_o the_o true_a and_o living_n god_n and_o have_v express_o exclude_v the_o consideration_n of_o that_o article_n out_o of_o the_o discourse_n though_o christianity_n as_o believe_v jesus_n to_o be_v the_o messiah_n for_o the_o faith_n in_o the_o holy_a trinity_n have_v always_o be_v require_v in_o order_n to_o baptism_n answ._n whether_o this_o author_n or_o i_o have_v give_v ourselves_o most_o leisure_n to_o consider_v into_o what_o faith_n we_o be_v baptize_v or_o other_o be_v to_o be_v baptize_v i_o can_v tell_v but_o i_o suspect_v my_o apprehension_n concern_v baptism_n be_v not_o in_o every_o respect_n the_o same_o with_o his_o which_o of_o we_o have_v consider_v the_o matter_n with_o most_o exactness_n be_v not_o to_o be_v please_v to_o set_v down_o plain_o the_o doctrine_n his_o word_n seem_v to_o have_v a_o secret_a relation_n to_o a_o judgement_n may_v be_v make_v whether_o they_o be_v just_o repute_v absolute_o their_o believe_a jesus_n to_o be_v the_o christ_n but_o only_o those_o who_o first_o of_o all_o acknowledge_v their_o belief_n in_o the_o true_a and_o living_n god_n and_o therefore_o those_o who_o be_v the_o sure_a way_n to_o have_v the_o most_o intelligible_a faith_n for_o people_n to_o go_v as_o far_o as_o they_o can_v from_o god_n express_a declaration_n there_o will_v be_v some_o difference_n indeed_o among_o christian_n as_o to_o the_o particular_a doctrine_n they_o believe_v some_o believe_v more_o article_n some_o few_o and_o this_o must_v needs_o be_v till_o they_o be_v all_o equal_a in_o their_o knowledge_n yet_o in_o the_o way_n except_v against_o they_o will_v every_o one_o be_v oblige_v to_o believe_v and_o practice_v according_a to_o the_o extent_n of_o their_o knowledge_n and_o to_o agree_v in_o faith_n and_o practice_n so_o far_o as_o they_o do_v in_o knowledge_n and_o let_v people_n advance_v what_o notion_n they_o please_v concern_v what_o article_n be_v teach_v not_o only_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o act_n but_o in_o the_o epistle_n too_o i_o will_v humble_o ask_v for_o what_o reason_n must_v he_o so_o long_o defer_v the_o resignation_n of_o himself_o to_o christ_n i_o suppose_v not_o because_o he_o have_v assurance_n he_o shall_v live_v long_o enough_o to_o do_v that_o after_o he_o have_v take_v some_o or_o all_o of_o his_o doctrine_n to_o task_n and_o have_v have_v they_o under_o his_o examination_n must_v he_o first_o of_o all_o fit_a in_o judgement_n upon_o christ_n doctrine_n and_o see_v whether_o they_o be_v reasonable_a and_o fit_a and_o convenient_a for_o he_o to_o assent_v to_o and_o that_o he_o shall_v act_v wise_o and_o prudent_o to_o take_v the_o author_n of_o they_o for_o his_o lord_n if_o so_o how_o shall_v it_o be_v make_v appear_v that_o such_o a_o person_n receive_v he_o for_o his_o lord_n as_o christ_n order_n and_o consequent_o that_o he_o be_v a_o christian_n in_o the_o gospel_n sense_n be_v his_o believe_v those_o doctrine_n before_o he_o take_v christ_n for_o his_o lord_n a_o believe_v they_o as_o a_o christian_a shall_v and_o must_v believe_v they_o pure_o for_o his_o sake_n or_o because_o he_o have_v teach_v they_o see_v he_o must_v first_o know_v and_o believe_v they_o before_o he_o adventure_v to_o receive_v he_o for_o his_o lord_n and_o trust_v he_o with_o his_o faith_n in_o this_o case_n his_o bless_a saviour_n tell_v we_o plain_o with_o what_o disposition_n we_o must_v receive_v he_o for_o our_o lord_n so_o as_o if_o any_o thing_n he_o shall_v require_v we_o to_o believe_v or_o obey_v can_v be_v acknowledge_v or_o perform_v without_o expose_v we_o to_o the_o great_a temporal_a inconvenience_n and_o hazard_n we_o must_v sustain_v and_o encounter_v they_o and_o deny_v ourselves_o those_o do_v her_o lord_n who_o clothe_v he_o in_o purple_a and_o cry_v hail_n to_o he_o in_o derision_n if_o a_o hundred_o article_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v explicit_o believe_v to_o spite_n of_o all_o their_o argument_n to_o the_o contrary_a unless_o i_o have_v as_o sure_a evidence_n that_o they_o be_v
not_o sincere_a in_o their_o profession_n as_o they_o give_v of_o the_o mistake_n of_o their_o judgement_n in_o the_o present_a point_n this_o author_n certify_v he_o will_v endeavour_v hereafter_o and_o so_o they_o be_v now_o not_o to_o make_v they_o christian_n but_o by_o virtue_n or_o reason_n of_o that_o obligation_n they_o be_v under_o by_o be_v christian_n to_o believe_v whatsoever_o the_o first_o head_n and_o a_o great_a many_o more_o deliver_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n these_o have_v not_o a_o immediate_a relation_n to_o our_o salvation_n but_o they_o may_v be_v say_v to_o have_v a_o consequential_a and_o obediential_a relation_n to_o our_o salvation_n the_o doctrine_n we_o be_v now_o discourse_v of_o be_v those_o which_o pertain_v to_o the_o second_o head_n and_o if_o any_o man_n think_v there_o be_v doctrine_n in_o the_o epistle_n distinct_a from_o those_o lay_v down_o by_o the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n etc._n etc._n that_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o make_v man_n christian_n and_o entitle_v they_o to_o salvation_n when_o he_o shall_v set_v down_o a_o list_n of_o they_o and_o produce_v his_o proof_n that_o every_o one_o of_o they_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v explicit_o believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n etc._n etc._n a_o judgement_n may_v be_v make_v of_o they_o but_o till_o this_o be_v do_v the_o distinction_n of_o reveal_v truth_n to_o be_v believe_v upon_o god_n veracity_n and_o truth_n of_o a_o high_a nature_n will_v be_v of_o little_a or_o no_o use_n unto_o i_o i_o shall_v here_o further_o observe_v that_o 1._o it_o be_v certain_a the_o doctrine_n which_o relate_v what_o christ_n have_v do_v and_o suffer_v have_v not_o the_o same_o relation_n to_o the_o salvation_n of_o mankind_n the_o obedience_n and_o nature_n of_o the_o doctrine_n that_o be_v of_o the_o matter_n teach_v and_o therefore_o my_o believe_a one_o doctrine_n have_v the_o same_o relation_n to_o my_o salvation_n that_o my_o believe_v will_v be_v no_o advantage_n to_o the_o nature_n of_o doctrine_n for_o hereby_o people_n will_v be_v determine_v to_o take_v they_o for_o doctrine_n absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v not_o from_o their_o perceive_v that_o such_o a_o necessity_n arise_v from_o their_o nature_n but_o from_o bare_a humane_a authority_n nor_o can_v they_o be_v certain_a that_o he_o or_o those_o who_o have_v judge_v they_o to_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o salvation_n have_v be_v determine_v in_o their_o judgement_n by_o the_o nature_n of_o their_o doctrine_n and_o not_o by_o their_o own_o arbitrary_a pleasure_n till_o they_o have_v resolve_v the_o matter_n themselves_o by_o exercise_v their_o own_o reason_n about_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o particular_a doctrine_n which_o shall_v be_v recommend_v to_o rather_o impose_v on_o they_o it_o plain_o appear_v by_o what_o the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n have_v write_v that_o though_o he_o do_v not_o think_v the_o epistle_n the_o most_o proper_a part_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n to_o be_v consult_v in_o order_n to_o our_o discern_a which_o be_v the_o doctrine_n christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n do_v require_v to_o be_v believe_v as_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o make_v man_n christian_n or_o to_o salvation_n yet_o that_o he_o think_v the_o doctrine_n contain_v in_o the_o not_o discover_v or_o prove_v that_o those_o doctrine_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n it_o discover_v or_o prove_v no_o more_o but_o that_o the_o church_n do_v think_v those_o doctrine_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v explicit_o to_o make_v man_n christian_n now_o when_o the_o question_n be_v whether_o the_o church_n have_v think_v right_o concern_v this_o matter_n that_o question_n must_v be_v determine_v if_o she_o have_v not_o authority_n to_o make_v at_o least_o reveal_v doctrine_n absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n by_o ascend_v high_o and_o see_v what_o jesus_n christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n have_v declare_v be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n which_o be_v the_o way_n the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n take_v to_o discover_v what_o doctrine_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o the_o aforesaid_a purpose_n without_o make_v any_o hubbub_n concern_v the_o church_n in_o the_o matter_n the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n have_v not_o write_v one_o word_n that_o i_o can_v find_v that_o have_v any_o tendency_n to_o the_o disadvantage_n of_o the_o christian_a church_n but_o very_o much_o that_o will_v contribute_v great_o to_o her_o honour_n and_o interest_n be_v people_n general_o of_o the_o mind_n to_o attend_v her_o great_a concernment_n hearty_o without_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v sway_v by_o their_o own_o petty_a interest_n and_o peevish_a humour_n which_o they_o sacrilegious_o dignify_v with_o her_o name_n she_o may_v enjoy_v a_o profound_a rest_n and_o become_v daily_o more_o and_o more_o true_o glorious_a will_v other_o people_n let_v she_o be_v quiet_a and_o not_o disturb_v she_o repose_v by_o a_o rude_a abuse_v her_o name_n to_o justify_v their_o espouse_v and_o talk_v for_o matter_n both_o scripture_n and_o reason_n do_v disclaim_v second_o the_o exact_a proof_n of_o the_o four_o first_o point_n will_v not_o afford_v any_o proof_n of_o what_o this_o author_n declare_v have_v to_o say_v on_o these_o point_n to_o that_o treatise_n or_o some_o passage_n in_o it_o this_o author_n bestow_v his_o seven_o page_n in_o set_v down_o a_o objection_n that_o have_v some_o relation_n to_o his_o two_o first_o point_n i_o think_v the_o objection_n be_v not_o accurate_o express_v but_o that_o i_o shall_v pass_v over_o and_o only_o take_v notice_n of_o his_o speak_n of_o doctrine_n propose_v to_o be_v believe_v upon_o the_o absolute_a promise_n of_o salvation_n this_o be_v a_o passage_n i_o confess_v i_o do_v not_o well_o understand_v i_o know_v there_o be_v at_o can_v not_o be_v any_o thing_n absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v unto_o salvation_n for_o a_o answer_n to_o this_o viz._n objection_n speak_v of_o before_o it_o will_v say_v this_o author_n be_v material_a to_o examine_v first_o whether_o nothing_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o salvation_n but_o what_o be_v declare_v to_o be_v so_o or_o whether_o any_o doctrine_n upon_o which_o salvation_n be_v propose_v be_v single_o of_o itself_o sufficient_a for_o it_o p._n 8._o he_o immediate_o add_v this_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o query_n of_o no_o small_a importance_n here_o or_o number_n of_o doctrine_n separately_z from_o this_o doctrine_n 4._o because_o no_o other_o doctrine_n christ_n or_o his_o apostle_n have_v teach_v can_v be_v believe_v aright_o but_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o person_n believe_v this_o doctrine_n let_v a_o man_n believe_v all_o the_o doctrine_n deliver_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n upon_o consideration_n pure_o distinct_a from_o this_o that_o they_o be_v doctrine_n teach_v by_o jesus_n christ_n who_o he_o have_v receive_v for_o his_o lord_n he_o do_v not_o believe_v they_o as_o a_o christian_a ought_v to_o believe_v they_o nor_o make_v they_o christian_n how_o near_o a_o connection_n soever_o their_o believe_v any_o thing_n else_o which_o they_o know_v and_o believe_v concern_v he_o who_o shall_v be_v the_o messiah_n may_v because_o he_o know_v that_o jesus_n who_o be_v the_o messiah_n have_v teach_v they_o be_v a_o repetition_n of_o his_o belief_n of_o that_o article_n the_o ground_n and_o reason_n of_o his_o believe_v
