order_n to_o its_o reconciliation_n to_o himself_o as_o when_o he_o bring_v man_n to_o taste_v of_o his_o justice_n and_o displeasure_n for_o sin_n it_o be_v still_o in_o mercy_n to_o humble_v he_o by_o his_o chastisement_n and_o judgement_n unto_o repentance_n that_o he_o may_v find_v mercy_n so_o as_o judgement_n and_o mercy_n may_v meet_v in_o the_o same_o soul_n and_o god_n wisdom_n be_v true_o magnify_v in_o find_v out_o the_o mean_n of_o our_o redemption_n by_o our_o great_a and_o only_a mediator_n jesus_n christ_n through_o his_o mediation_n suffer_v sacrifice_n and_o atonement_n and_o his_o goodness_n and_o mercy_n be_v equal_o magnify_v in_o afford_v those_o mean_n but_o this_o prove_v not_o that_o adequate_a satisfaction_n to_o vindictive_a justice_n which_o our_o adversary_n have_v contend_v for_o and_o though_o we_o sincere_o own_o jesus_n christ_n as_o we_o ought_v to_o do_v both_o for_o our_o example_n intercessor_n light_n and_o teacher_n yet_o this_o be_v not_o all_o our_o notion_n or_o rather_o knowledge_n wherein_o we_o receive_v he_o neither_o do_v we_o in_o these_o deny_v the_o necessity_n of_o his_o death_n or_o exclude_v any_o rational_a account_n thereof_o as_o be_v undue_o suppose_v p._n 216._o for_o there_o be_v great_a reason_n for_o christ_n death_n and_o sacrifice_n for_o sinner_n because_o all_o in_o adam_n be_v dead_a and_o under_o condemnation_n that_o they_o may_v live_v by_o and_o unto_o he_o so_o as_o to_o be_v true_o capable_a of_o real_o know_v and_o own_v christ_n jesus_n in_o spirit_n life_n and_o power_n and_o in_o all_o his_o office_n and_o work_n both_o as_o king_n high_a priest_n and_o prophet_n our_o great_a mediator_n example_n captain_n leader_n light_n and_o lawgiver_n but_o to_o draw_v towards_o a_o conclusion_n of_o this_o point_n of_o satisfaction_n see_v it_o be_v so_o numble_o and_o impertinent_o state_v by_o our_o present_a antagonist_n let_v we_o observe_v a_o little_o further_a how_o rigid_o and_o severe_o he_o state_v it_o to_o the_o dishonour_n of_o god_n divine_a justice_n itself_o and_o his_o beloved_a son_n he_o first_o put_v the_o question_n what_o room_n then_o be_v there_o for_o god_n mercy_n if_o he_o be_v all_o justice_n where_o be_v his_o mercy_n then_o he_o answer_v god_n attribute_n do_v not_o fight_v or_o contradict_v one_o another_o they_o magnify_v and_o exalt_v one_o another_o true_a thus_o far_o but_o how_o thus_o god_n justice_n be_v magnify_v in_o that_o it_o exact_v full_a and_o adequate_a satisfaction_n pay_v to_o god_n justice_n for_o our_o sin_n in_o the_o sacrifice_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n which_o because_o of_o his_o divine_a nature_n be_v full_a and_o adequate_a satisfaction_n and_o by_o his_o humane_a nature_n the_o satisfaction_n be_v pay_v by_o the_o same_o nature_n which_o offend_v p._n 214_o 215._o all_o which_o consider_v this_o be_v to_o assert_v satisfaction_n as_o a_o notion_n of_o law_n as_o dr._n owen_n call_v it_o in_o the_o high_a rigid_a and_o most_o severe_a sense_n exact_v that_o any_o of_o the_o presbyterian_n etc._n etc._n have_v assert_v it_o and_o to_o save_v we_o the_o labour_n of_o draw_v the_o consequence_n and_o answer_n here_o we_o may_v here_o i_o hope_v without_o offence_n give_v he_o a_o recitation_n of_o a_o more_o ingenuous_a person_n be_v answer_v and_o objection_n against_o this_o notion_n than_o himself_o namely_o dr._n still_v fleet_n since_o bishop_n of_o worcester_n in_o his_o discourse_n concern_v the_o true_a reason_n of_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n page_n 269_o 270._o print_a 1669._o out_o of_o which_o take_v the_o follow_a discourse_n viz._n the_o state_n of_o the_o controversy_n have_v be_v render_v more_o obscure_a by_o the_o mistake_v of_o some_o who_o have_v manage_v it_o with_o great_a zeal_n than_o judgement_n they_o have_v shoot_v over_o their_o adversary_n head_n and_o lay_v their_o own_o more_o open_a to_o assault_n it_o be_v easy_a to_o observe_v that_o most_o of_o socinus_n his_o argument_n be_v level_v against_o a_o opinion_n which_o few_o who_o have_v consider_v those_o thing_n do_v maintain_v and_o none_o need_v to_o think_v themselves_o oblige_v to_o do_v it_o which_o be_v that_o christ_n pay_v a_o proper_a and_o rigid_a satisfaction_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n consider_v under_o the_o notion_n of_o debt_n and_o that_o he_o pay_v the_o very_a same_o which_o we_o ought_v to_o have_v do_v which_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o law_n be_v never_o call_v satisfaction_n but_o strict_a payment_n against_o this_o socinus_n dispute_v from_o the_o impossibility_n of_o christ_n pay_v the_o very_a same_o that_o we_o be_v to_o have_v pay_v because_o our_o penalty_n be_v eternal_a death_n and_o that_o as_o the_o consequence_n of_o inherent_a gild_n which_o christ_n neither_o do_v nor_o can_v undergo_v if_o a_o mediator_n can_v have_v pay_v the_o same_o than_o the_o gospel_n have_v not_o be_v the_o bring_n in_o of_o a_o better_a covenant_n but_o a_o performance_n of_o the_o old_a p._n 271._o but_o if_o there_o be_v a_o relaxation_n or_o dispensation_n of_o the_o first_o law_n than_o it_o necessary_o follow_v that_o what_o christ_n pay_v be_v not_o the_o very_a same_o which_o the_o first_o law_n require_v for_o what_o need_n of_o that_o when_o the_o very_a same_o be_v pay_v that_o be_v in_o the_o obligation_n but_o if_o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o dignity_n of_o the_o person_n make_v up_o what_o want_v in_o the_o kind_n or_o degree_n of_o punishment_n this_o be_v a_o plain_a confession_n that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o same_o etc._n etc._n beside_o if_o the_o very_a same_o have_v be_v pay_v in_o the_o strict_a sense_n there_o will_v have_v follow_v a_o deliverance_n ipso_fw-la facto_fw-la for_o the_o release_v immediate_o follow_v the_o payment_n of_o the_o same_o and_o it_o have_v be_v injustice_n to_o have_v require_v any_o thing_n further_o in_o order_n to_o the_o discharge_v of_o the_o offender_n when_o strict_a and_o full_a payment_n have_v be_v make_v of_o what_o be_v in_o the_o obligation_n but_o we_o see_v that_o faith_n and_o repentance_n and_o the_o consequence_n of_o those_o two_o be_v make_v condition_n on_o our_o part_n in_o order_n to_o the_o enjoy_n the_o benefit_n of_o what_o christ_n have_v procure_v so_o that_o the_o release_n be_v not_o immediate_a upon_o the_o payment_n etc._n etc._n p._n 272._o we_o be_v to_o consider_v that_o these_o very_a person_n assert_v that_o christ_n pay_v all_o for_o we_o and_o in_o our_o name_n and_o stead_n so_o that_o the_o payment_n by_o christ_n be_v by_o a_o substitution_n in_o our_o room_n and_o if_o he_o pay_v the_o same_o which_o the_o law_n require_v the_o benefit_n must_v immediate_o accrue_v to_o those_o in_o who_o name_n the_o debt_n be_v pay_v for_o what_o be_v do_v in_o the_o name_n of_o another_o be_v all_o one_o to_o the_o creditor_n as_o if_o it_o have_v be_v do_v by_o the_o debtor_n himself_o but_o above_o all_o thing_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o reconcile_v the_o freeness_n of_o remission_n with_o the_o full_a payment_n etc._n etc._n neither_o will_v it_o serve_v to_o say_v that_o though_o it_o be_v not_o free_a to_o christ_n yet_o it_o be_v to_o we_o for_o the_o satisfaction_n and_o remission_n must_v respect_v the_o same_o person_n for_o christ_n do_v not_o pay_v for_o himself_o but_o for_o we_o neither_o can_v the_o remission_n be_v to_o he_o etc._n etc._n it_o be_v impossible_a the_o same_o debt_n shall_v be_v full_o pay_v and_o free_o forgive_v much_o less_o will_v it_o avoid_v the_o difficulty_n in_o this_o case_n to_o say_v that_o it_o be_v a_o refusable_a payment_n for_o it_o be_v suppose_v to_o be_v the_o very_a same_o it_o be_v not_o in_o justice_n refusable_a etc._n etc._n p._n 173._o but_o this_o whole_a opinion_n be_v build_v upon_o a_o mistake_n that_o satisfaction_n must_v be_v the_o payment_n of_o the_o very_a same_o which_o while_o they_o contend_v for_o they_o give_v our_o adversary_n too_o great_a advantage_n and_o make_v they_o think_v they_o triumph_v over_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o church_n when_o they_o do_v it_o only_o over_o the_o mistake_n of_o some_o particular_a person_n but_o the_o foundation_n of_o this_o mistake_n lie_v in_o the_o consideration_n of_o punishment_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o debt_n and_o that_o satisfaction_n therefore_o must_v be_v by_o strict_a payment_n in_o rigour_n of_o law_n but_o how_o great_a that_o mistake_n be_v will_v appear_v in_o the_o subsequent_a discourse_n thus_o far_o the_o citation_n the_o subsequent_a discourse_n he_o mention_n be_v from_o p._n 273_o 274._o to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o say_a discourse_n of_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ._n now_o i_o will_v advise_v our_o accuser_n to_o compare_v his_o notion_n of_o a_o full_a and_o adequate_a satisfaction_n pay_v to_o god_n justice_n which_o he_o have_v tell_v we_o can_v remit_v
he_o withal_o as_o such_o than_o these_o same_o eye_n of_o flesh_n they_o now_o have_v again_o i_o be_o manifest_o misrepresent_v by_o g._n k._n narr_n p._n 18._o as_o think_v all_o anthropomorphites_n and_o muggletonian_n who_o believe_v that_o the_o man_n christ_n have_v any_o bodily_a existence_n in_o heaven_n which_o be_v none_o of_o my_o answer_n or_o argument_n but_o upon_o j._n newman_n exclude_v christ_n out_o of_o all_o man_n because_o at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n as_o a_o personal_a be_v and_o call_v christ_n within_o only_a a_o feign_a christ_n as_o his_o term_n be_v this_o argument_n i_o oppose_v and_o still_o do_v as_o no_o sufficient_a reason_n to_o exclude_v the_o true_a christ_n out_o of_o all_o man_n and_o therefore_o give_v this_o answer_n i.e._n this_o manner_n of_o exclude_v god_n right_a hand_n and_o christ_n to_o a_o limitation_n as_o whole_o out_o of_o his_o people_n in_o a_o personal_a be_v which_o be_v no_o scripture_n term_n still_o imply_v he_o to_o be_v such_o a_o personal_a god_n or_o christ_n like_o the_o anthropomorphites_n etc._n etc._n now_o i_o say_v again_o if_o any_o one_o shall_v argue_v in_o better_a term_n that_o christ_n be_v a_o glorious_a intelligent_a be_v at_o god_n right_a hand_n without_o all_o man_n ergo_fw-la he_o be_v not_o in_o man_n no_o not_o in_o believer_n i_o deny_v the_o consequence_n for_o this_o be_v to_o limit_v the_o omnipresent_v god_n to_o a_o remoteness_n as_o well_o as_o christ_n and_o tend_v to_o gratify_v the_o carnal_a imagination_n of_o such_o as_o have_v form_v a_o idea_n or_o imagination_n of_o god_n and_o his_o right_a hand_n like_o a_o person_n or_o man_n remote_a and_o without_o all_o man_n under_o such_o limitation_n as_o the_o anthropomorphites_n do_v and_o that_o according_a to_o the_o common_a speak_n when_o we_o say_v such_o a_o person_n we_o mean_v such_o a_o man_n who_o we_o call_v a_o person_n as_o we_o do_v a_o woman_n also_o and_o my_o adversarie_n also_o more_o fine_o define_v a_o person_n to_o be_v a_o spirit_n p._n 5._o will_v neither_o help_n the_o argument_n for_o the_o baptist_n against_o we_o nor_o amend_v some_o man_n carnal_a imagination_n of_o a_o personal_a god_n like_o themselves_o for_o who_o be_v most_o carnal_a in_o their_o thought_n about_o god_n be_v most_o apt_a to_o imagine_v carnal_o of_o he_o and_o suppose_v any_o shall_v argue_v in_o this_o man_n term_n that_o christ_n be_v at_o god_n right_a hand_n who_o be_v a_o spirit_n ergo_fw-la not_o in_o believer_n or_o any_o man_n this_o will_v bespeak_v as_o much_o ignorance_n as_o the_o former_a and_o more_o absurdity_n to_o suppose_v god_n a_o limit_v circumscribe_v spirit_n not_o infinite_a nor_o omnipresent_v which_o be_v to_o oppose_v his_o be_v the_o true_a god_n as_o he_o be_v a_o infinite_a omnipresent_v spirit_n power_n life_n light_n and_o wisdom_n beside_o my_o animadversion_n be_v very_o plain_a to_o j._n n._n in_o this_o case_n christ_n ascend_v p._n 69._o if_o the_o indwel_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n be_v such_o in_o his_o people_n and_o the_o saint_n in_o such_o near_a union_n and_o conjunction_n with_o christ_n as_o the_o branch_n with_o the_o vine_n and_o the_o member_n with_o the_o body_n as_o in_o contradiction_n to_o himself_o he_o confess_v then_o it_o be_v false_a and_o a_o lie_a imagination_n to_o imagine_v either_o christ_n god_n and_o his_o right_a hand_n so_o remote_a as_o not_o to_o dwell_v in_o any_o man_n no_o not_o in_o their_o own_o people_n and_o i_o may_v add_v it_o be_v also_o
