the_o same_o law_n be_v no_o fulfil_n in_o whole_a or_o in_o part_n of_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o therefore_o can_v not_o be_v say_v thus_o to_o be_v do_v twice_o not_o he_o say_v 3._o yea_o the_o gospel_n bind_v we_o to_o that_o which_o christ_n can_v not_o do_v for_o we_o as_o to_o believe_v in_o a_o saviour_n etc._n etc._n ans._n and_o what_o then_o be_v these_o part_n of_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n if_o they_o be_v christ_n have_v perform_v they_o for_o he_o give_v perfect_a obedience_n and_o thereby_o have_v free_v we_o from_o that_o obligation_n if_o they_o be_v not_o neither_o can_v they_o now_o be_v require_v as_o part_v of_o that_o condition_n he_o say_v 4._o the_o truth_n which_o this_o objection_n intimate_v we_o all_o agree_v in_o viz._n that_o the_o mediator_n perfect_o keep_v the_o law_n of_o innocency_n that_o the_o keep_n of_o that_o law_n may_v not_o be_v necessary_a to_o our_o salvation_n and_o so_o such_o righteousness_n necessary_a in_o ourselves_o but_o that_o we_o may_v be_v pardon_v for_o want_n of_o perfect_a innocency_n &_o be_v save_v upon_o our_o sincere_a keep_n of_o the_o law_n of_o grace_n because_o the_o law_n of_o innocency_n be_v keep_v by_o our_o mediator_n and_o thereby_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n merit_v and_o by_o it_o christ_n pardon_v spirit_n &_o life_n by_o he_o free_o give_v to_o believer_n ans._n the_o truth_n express_v in_o the_o objection_n be_v very_o far_o different_a from_o this_o sociniano-arminian_n scheme_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o we_o have_v have_v often_o time_n propose_v to_o we_o by_o mr._n baxter_n but_o never_o yet_o confirm_v nor_o do_v we_o expect_v ever_o so_o see_v it_o confirm_v we_o have_v also_o at_o several_a occasion_n give_v our_o reason_n against_o it_o and_o need_v not_o therefore_o here_o repeat_v or_o insist_v upon_o it_o last_o object_n the_o same_o person_n may_v be_v real_o a_o sinner_n in_o himself_o and_o yet_o perfect_o innocent_a in_o christ_n and_o by_o imputation_n how_o or_o upon_o what_o occasion_n this_o objection_n be_v use_v mr._n baxter_n do_v not_o show_v and_o therefore_o we_o can_v certain_o know_v the_o true_a meaning_n and_o import_n thereof_o in_o one_o sense_n it_o may_v be_v very_o true_a and_o yet_o in_o another_o sense_n it_o can_v be_v admit_v it_o be_v true_a in_o this_o sense_n the_o same_o person_n may_v be_v inherent_o a_o sinner_n and_o yet_o legal_o innocent_a through_o the_o imputation_n of_o the_o surety-righteousness_n of_o christ._n but_o it_o can_v be_v admit_v in_o this_o sense_n the_o same_o person_n be_v legal_o innocent_a in_o christ_n by_o imputation_n for_o this_o be_v a_o contradiction_n what_o say_v mr._n baxtor_n to_o it_o remember_v say_v he_o that_o you_o suppose_v here_o the_o person_n &_o subject_a to_o be_v the_o same_o man_n &_o then_o that_o the_o two_o contrary_a relation_n of_o perfect_a innocency_n or_o guiltlesness_n &_o guilt_n of_o any_o yea_o much_a sin_n can_v be_v consistent_a in_o he_o be_v a_o gross_a contradiction_n ans._n there_o be_v no_o contradiction_n unless_o the_o matter_n be_v ad_fw-la idem_fw-la &_o here_o it_o be_v not_o so_o for_o he_o may_v be_v guilty_a inherent_o as_o to_o himself_o and_o yet_o innocent_a legal_o as_o to_o his_o surety_n but_o if_o both_o be_v understand_v of_o a_o person_n legal_o consider_v i_o grant_v it_o be_v a_o contradiction_n for_o he_o that_o be_v legal_o innocent_a can_v be_v legal_o guilty_a in_o so_o far_o as_o he_o be_v legal_o innocent_a whether_o the_o charge_n be_v particular_a for_o one_o sin_n that_o be_v bring_v in_o against_o he_o or_o for_o more_o or_o for_o all_o he_o say_v 2._o but_o if_o you_o mean_v that_o god_n repute_v we_o to_o be_v perfect_o innocent_a when_o we_o be_v not_o because_o that_o christ_n be_v so_o it_o be_v to_o impute_v error_n to_o god_n ans._n this_o can_v be_v their_o meaning_n for_o they_o know_v that_o god_n repute_v no_o man_n to_o be_v otherway_n than_o he_o be_v but_o yet_o it_o must_v be_v say_v that_o god_n repute_v believer_n who_o have_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n impute_v to_o they_o innocent_a as_o to_o the_o violation_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n i_o mean_v legal_o innocent_a and_o so_o not_o guilty_a of_o the_o charge_n of_o sin_n &_o death_n upon_o that_o account_n bring_v in_o against_o they_o for_o they_o be_v so_o be_v justify_v &_o therefore_o there_o be_v now_o no_o condemnation_n to_o such_o rome_n 8_o 1._o &_o none_o can_v free_a gift_n to_o pardon_n &_o glory_n for_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n that_o merit_v it_o &_o this_o thus_o give_v we_o he_o repute_v to_o be_v a_o acceptable_a righteousness_n in_o we_o ans._n now_o that_o this_o be_v a_o clear_a perversion_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v manifest_a from_o these_o particular_n beside_o several_a other_o else_o where_o touch_v 1_o hereby_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n be_v change_v into_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n only_o with_o a_o mitigation_n of_o the_o condition_n 2_o christ_n surety-righteousness_n be_v not_o impute_v to_o we_o neither_o as_o our_o legal_a righteousness_n nor_o yet_o as_o our_o evangelick-righteousness_n for_o at_o most_o it_o be_v only_o grant_v to_o be_v impute_v as_o to_o its_o effect_n 3._o we_o have_v no_o other_o righteousness_n hereby_o proper_o impute_v to_o we_o but_o our_o own_o inherent_a righteousness_n 4_o christ_n be_v hereby_o make_v of_o god_n unto_o we_o righteousness_n by_o be_v make_v of_o god_n sanctification_n to_o we_o 5_o hereby_o the_o immediate_a ground_n of_o our_o pardon_n &_o right_o to_o glory_n be_v not_o christ_n surety-righteousness_n but_o our_o own_o inherent_a righteousness_n by_o christ_n as_o our_o legal_a person_n we_o can_v not_o be_v bind_v to_o further_a obedience_n to_o it_o this_o be_v found_v if_o it_o be_v direct_v against_o the_o orthodox_n &_o not_o mere_o against_o the_o antinomian_o upon_o the_o mistake_n of_o the_o true_a meaning_n of_o these_o word_n as_o our_o legal_a person_n &_o reputative_o when_o we_o speak_v of_o christ_n being_n our_o legal_a person_n we_o mean_v his_o become_v our_o surety_n and_o put_v his_o name_n in_o our_o bond_n and_o satisfy_v the_o law_n as_o our_o surety_n in_o our_o room_n &_o stead_n and_o that_o therefore_o all_o his_o own_o be_v now_o unite_v to_o he_o by_o faith_n be_v deal_v with_o as_o if_o they_o have_v fulfil_v the_o law_n themselves_o christ_n fulfil_v of_o it_o be_v now_o impute_v to_o they_o bear_v the_o whole_a curse_n and_o yet_o believer_n be_v not_o free_v from_o fatherly_a chastisement_n that_o this_o be_v to_o say_v that_o he_o bear_v all_o the_o curse_n that_o do_v not_o bear_v it_o under_o all_o consideration_n &_o as_o to_o all_o effect_n that_o may_v pass_v under_o other_o consideration_n &_o according_o be_v endure_v for_o other_o end_n &_o advantage_n 2_o believer_n be_v repute_v in_o christ_n to_o have_v fulfil_v the_o law_n in_o order_n to_o the_o obtain_n of_o the_o crown_n and_o in_o reference_n to_o that_o to_o have_v fulfil_v the_o law_n to_o all_o due_a end_n but_o not_o to_o have_v do_v it_o in_o themselves_o or_o in_o their_o own_o natural_a person_n nor_o be_v the_o fulfil_n of_o it_o by_o their_o surety_n impute_v to_o they_o to_o exeem_v they_o from_o under_o the_o authority_n of_o god_n &_o of_o his_o law_n far_o less_o particular_o to_o exeem_v they_o from_o testify_v their_o love_n &_o gratitude_n by_o endeavour_v after_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n upon_o gospel-principle_n &_o ground_n &_o upon_o gospel-motive_n &_o for_o gospel-end_n 2._o or_o say_v he_o as_o if_o the_o law_n oblige_v one_o man_n to_o fulfil_v it_o twice_o over_o for_o the_o same_o lefes_n time_n once_o simple_o &_o in_o all_o its_o obligation_n &_o another_o time_n for_o other_o end_n ans._n this_o be_v deny_v neither_o follow_v it_o from_o what_o we_o say_v because_o we_o can_v fulfil_v the_o law_n once_o to_o which_o we_o be_v oblige_v therefore_a must_v christ_n fulfil_v it_o for_o we_o to_o the_o end_n we_o may_v enjoy_v the_o promise_a reward_n and_o his_o fulfil_n of_o it_o for_o this_o end_n do_v not_o make_v we_o lawless_a far_o less_o exeem_v we_o from_o obedience_n for_o other_o gospel_n end_v to_o which_o adam_n in_o innocency_n be_v not_o oblige_v or_o 3_o say_v he_o as_o if_o the_o law_n require_v any_o more_o than_o absolute_a perfection_n ans._n we_o do_v not_o say_v that_o it_o do_v but_o all_o our_o obedience_n with_o all_o the_o
