draw_v near_o i_o now_o upon_o this_o when_o moses_n say_v thus_o that_o god_n will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o those_o that_o draw_v near_o he_o this_o be_v moses_n scope_n to_o aaron_n as_o if_o moses_n you_o have_v have_v a_o great_a loss_n and_o affliction_n upon_o you_o but_o god_n have_v have_v glory_n god_n have_v glorify_v himself_o how_o have_v god_n glorify_v himself_o very_o much_o by_o this_o way_n for_o god_n by_o this_o way_n have_v do_v a_o act_n to_o make_v all_o the_o people_n of_o the_o land_n fear_v before_o he_o to_o cause_v they_o to_o worship_n he_o with_o all_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v we_o appear_v before_o this_o holy_a god_n we_o have_v need_n take_v heed_n how_o we_o appear_v in_o his_o presence_n and_o worship_n he_o according_a to_o the_o way_n that_o he_o himself_o will_v be_v worship_v as_o if_o moses_n shall_v say_v this_o honour_n that_o god_n have_v by_o this_o mean_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n it_o be_v that_o that_o you_o shall_v account_v a_o great_a good_a than_o the_o life_n of_o your_o child_n what_o ever_o they_o be_v this_o be_v the_o scope_n of_o moses_n speech_n to_o aaron_n now_o upon_o this_o the_o text_n say_v aaron_n hold_v his_o peace_n he_o be_v silence_v it_o may_v be_v before_o he_o be_v express_v himself_o in_o grief_n and_o sorrow_v exceed_v much_o in_o word_n but_o now_o he_o be_v quiet_a and_o have_v nothing_o to_o say_v he_o do_v by_o his_o silence_n acknowledge_v his_o child_n be_v dear_a to_o he_o but_o it_o be_v fit_a that_o god_n shall_v be_v glorify_v what_o ever_o become_v of_o his_o child_n and_o therefore_o aaron_n hold_v his_o peace_n but_o the_o word_n that_o be_v here_o translate_v hold_v his_o peace_n it_o have_v more_o in_o it_o then_o mere_a silence_n for_o the_o hebrew_n have_v another_o word_n to_o signify_v mere_a silence_n of_o speech_n but_o this_o signify_v a_o stay_n of_o the_o heart_n that_o it_o do_v not_o further_o proceed_v in_o any_o trouble_n of_o spirit_n a_o silence_n in_o the_o very_a heart_n and_o stay_v of_o it_o a_o stay_n of_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o heart_n i_o find_v the_o same_o word_n to_o be_v use_v in_o scripture_n when_o joshua_n say_v to_o the_o sun_n si_fw-mi and_o still_o stay_v thyself_o on_o gibeon_n jos_n 10._o 12._o it_o be_v the_o same_o word_n that_o be_v here_o translate_v and_o aaron_n hold_v his_o peace_n this_o scripture_n you_o have_v these_o three_o special_a and_o notable_a point_n 1_o that_o in_o worship_v of_o god_n there_o be_v a_o draw_v nigh_o unto_o he_o 2_o that_o when_o we_o do_v draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n we_o shall_v take_v heed_n to_o ourselves_o that_o we_o sanctify_v god_n name_n 3_o if_o we_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o our_o drawing_n nigh_o to_o he_o then_o certain_o god_n will_v sanctify_v his_o own_o name_n upon_o we_o these_o be_v the_o three_o point_n that_o i_o intend_v to_o handle_v and_o especial_o the_o second_o to_o handle_v large_o among_o you_o i_o confess_v upon_o another_o occasion_n in_o one_o sermon_n i_o have_v speak_v out_o of_o these_o word_n but_o now_o i_o intend_v not_o only_o in_o general_n to_o show_v you_o how_o you_o shall_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o worship_n but_o likewise_o in_o the_o particular_a act_n of_o worship_n as_o sanctify_v his_o name_n in_o prayer_n in_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n in_o the_o several_a chief_a part_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n how_o his_o name_n shall_v be_v sanctify_v for_o in_o all_o these_o you_o do_v draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n and_o for_o that_o end_n i_o have_v pitch_v my_o thought_n upon_o this_o scripture_n but_o before_o i_o come_v to_o these_o three_o great_a point_n that_o be_v the_o principal_a point_n in_o the_o word_n read_v unto_o you_o i_o shall_v take_v up_o divers_a other_o note_n of_o observation_n that_o lie_v up_o and_o down_o as_o it_o be_v scatter_v that_o be_v of_o great_a use_n and_o will_v help_v we_o further_a to_o make_v use_n of_o this_o scripture_n in_o the_o other_o point_n that_o i_o shall_v come_v to_o afterward_o and_o handle_v more_o large_o the_o first_o note_n be_v this_o observe_v that_o in_o god_n worship_n there_o must_v be_v nothing_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n but_o what_o he_o have_v command_v what_o soever_o we_o meddle_v with_o in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n it_o must_v be_v what_o we_o have_v a_o warrant_n for_o out_o of_o the_o word_n
because_o than_o we_o shall_v and_o if_o we_o worship_n god_n as_o we_o ought_v we_o do_v act_v our_o faith_n and_o humility_n and_o all_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n we_o do_v act_v they_o as_o it_o be_v upon_o god_n when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o that_o be_v require_v in_o every_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o you_o shall_v stir_v up_o the_o faculty_n of_o your_o soul_n and_o all_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o you_o shall_v act_v they_o upon_o god_n when_o you_o be_v worship_v of_o he_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o come_v with_o grace_n when_o you_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n but_o there_o must_v be_v a_o act_n of_o that_o grace_n upon_o god_n and_o so_o we_o find_v in_o scripture_n that_o the_o act_n of_o grace_n upon_o god_n it_o be_v a_o draw_v near_o to_o he_o therefore_o in_o isa_n 29._o 13._o the_o lord_n complain_v there_o this_o people_n draw_v near_o to_o i_o with_o their_o lip_n but_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o i_o as_o if_o god_n shall_v say_v indeed_o they_o come_v and_o speak_v to_o i_o and_o therefore_o they_o think_v they_o draw_v nigh_o to_o i_o but_o i_o expect_v that_o their_o heart_n shall_v be_v act_v upon_o i_o god_n now_o when_o be_v there_o a_o time_n for_o the_o act_n of_o our_o grace_n upon_o god_n so_o as_o when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n and_o therefore_o in_o isa_n 64._o 7._o the_o lord_n complain_v there_o that_o no_o man_n do_v stir_v up_o himself_o to_o take_v hold_n on_o he_o when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n we_o shall_v stir_v up_o ourselves_o to_o take_v hold_n of_o god_n and_o thus_o you_o see_v in_o what_o respect_v the_o soul_n may_v be_v say_v to_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n when_o it_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o now_o for_o the_o application_n of_o this_o point_n come_v to_o perform_v any_o act_n of_o worship_n true_o this_o one_o thing_n will_v be_v of_o marvellous_a use_n and_o it_o will_v help_v forward_o to_o the_o next_o point_n of_o sanctify_v of_o god_n name_n this_o you_o be_v all_o convince_v of_o that_o it_o be_v your_o duty_n to_o worship_n god_n when_o you_o pray_v you_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n when_o you_o come_v to_o hear_v his_o word_n you_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o and_o when_o you_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n you_o worship_v he_o now_o if_o i_o shall_v come_v from_o one_o end_n of_o the_o congregation_n to_o the_o other_o and_o ask_v every_o one_o of_o you_o this_o question_n it_o be_v your_o duty_n to_o worship_n god_n be_v it_o not_o yes_o that_o you_o will_v all_o be_v ready_a to_o answer_v and_o what_o do_v you_o do_v god_n name_v 2_o second_o remember_v when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n i_o come_v to_o set_v myself_o before_o the_o lord_n in_o those_o way_n that_o god_n do_v let_v out_o the_o choice_n of_o his_o mercy_n to_o his_o people_n in_o i_o have_v many_o mercy_n from_o god_n in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o creature_n but_o when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o i_o expect_v the_o communication_n of_o his_o mercy_n in_o another_o way_n then_o through_o any_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n be_v the_o chief_a channel_n that_o god_n do_v let_v out_o the_o choice_a of_o his_o mercy_n to_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n through_o and_o now_o i_o be_o go_v to_o worship_n he_o i_o be_o go_v to_o present_v myself_o fore_o god_n indeed_o prayer_n other_o thing_n come_v under_o worship_n but_o yet_o these_o be_v the_o three_o cheiâ—_n duty_n of_o worship_n and_o i_o intend_v to_o speak_v to_o all_o these_o three_o and_o to_o show_v how_o we_o shall_v sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o draw_v nigh_o unto_o he_o in_o the_o word_n sacrament_n and_o prayer_n we_o may_v choose_v several_a text_n for_o all_o these_o but_o they_o fall_v full_a within_o the_o general_a and_o therefore_o it_o shall_v be_v sufficient_a for_o to_o ground_v the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o these_o duty_n of_o worship_n upon_o this_o text_n i_o of_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n that_o which_o we_o be_v to_o speak_v to_o this_o morning_n it_o be_v the_o sanctify_a of_o the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o 18._o take_v heed_n therefore_o how_o you_o hear_v it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n that_o be_v good_a and_o no_o question_n but_o god_n be_v please_v with_o the_o willingness_n of_o people_n to_o come_v to_o hear_v his_o word_n but_o you_o must_v not_o rest_v bare_o in_o hear_v but_o take_v heed_n how_o you_o hear_v now_o this_o be_v a_o point_n of_o great_a consequence_n and_o i_o hope_v it_o may_v do_v good_a to_o help_v to_o make_v many_o sermon_n to_o be_v profitable_a to_o you_o &_o the_o point_n i_o hope_n be_v seasonable_a &_o will_v be_v very_o suitable_a unto_o you_o for_o those_o that_o come_v to_o hear_v so_o soon_o in_o a_o morning_n and_o be_v willing_a even_o in_o hard_a weather_n to_o come_v out_o of_o their_o bed_n they_o give_v some_o good_a testimony_n that_o they_o do_v desire_n to_o honour_n god_n in_o their_o hear_n and_o to_o get_v good_a by_o their_o hear_n and_o it_o be_v pity_v that_o labour_n and_o pain_n shall_v be_v bestow_v and_o no_o profit_n but_o hurt_n rather_o get_v by_o it_o which_o god_n forbid_v therefore_o now_o i_o be_o to_o speak_v to_o a_o point_n that_o may_v help_v you_o so_o to_o hear_v as_o may_v recompense_v all_o your_o labour_n and_o pain_n in_o hear_v in_o preach_v to_o those_o that_o come_v to_o hear_v that_o so_o they_o may_v get_v good_a and_o benefit_n by_o it_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o encouragement_n then_o to_o such_o as_o come_v in_o a_o formal_a way_n because_o they_o use_v to_o come_v therefore_o this_o point_n be_v a_o great_a point_n i_o shall_v open_v give_v any_o certain_a sign_n of_o reprobation_n therefore_o i_o can_v say_v of_o any_o man_n he_o have_v now_o such_o a_o mark_n upon_o he_o as_o do_v evident_o prove_v that_o he_o be_v a_o reprobate_n we_o can_v tell_v that_o because_o we_o know_v not_o what_o god_n may_v do_v afterward_o but_o we_o may_v say_v this_o that_o it_o be_v as_o dreadful_a a_o sign_n as_o any_o there_o be_v by_o who_o it_o be_v dress_v receive_v blessing_n from_o god_n but_o say_v he_o that_o which_o bear_v thorn_n and_o brier_n be_v reject_v and_o be_v nigh_o unto_o curse_v who_o end_n be_v to_o be_v burn_v the_o meaning_n be_v this_o plain_o the_o rain_n here_o be_v the_o word_n and_o the_o good_a hearer_n they_o be_v like_o the_o ground_n that_o receive_v the_o rain_n and_o bring_v forth_o the_o four_o thing_n that_o be_v to_o be_v do_v for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n here_o it_o be_v the_o hunger_a and_o thirst_v of_o the_o soul_n after_o jesus_n christ_n whosoever_o come_v infinite_a need_n of_o he_o and_o the_o infinite_a excellency_n that_o there_o be_v in_o jesus_n christ_n my_o soul_n do_v famish_v and_o perish_v for_o ever_o without_o christ_n but_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o christ_n there_o be_v a_o fullness_n for_o the_o satisfy_n of_o my_o soul_n that_o i_o have_v have_v of_o christ_n sometime_o in_o the_o word_n and_o sometime_o in_o prayer_n that_o have_v be_v sweet_a unto_o i_o but_o i_o expect_v a_o further_a communion_n of_o christ_n here_o for_o this_o be_v the_o grand_a ordinance_n for_o communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n in_o deed_n the_o word_n in_o this_o respect_n it_o be_v beyond_o this_o ordinance_n that_o be_v it_o be_v not_o only_o for_o the_o increase_n of_o grace_n but_o for_o the_o beget_n this_o be_v only_o for_o the_o about_o it_o it_o be_v a_o wicked_a thing_n to_o use_v curse_n but_o it_o be_v a_o most_o wicked_a thing_n to_o wish_v evil_a to_o other_o in_o a_o way_n of_o prayer_n yet_o how_o many_o do_v so_o though_o it_o may_v be_v they_o do_v not_o think_v it_o they_o speak_v to_o god_n and_o desire_v he_o to_o bring_v such_o and_o such_o evil_n upon_o their_o neighbour_n yea_o sometime_o parent_n upon_o their_o child_n this_o be_v a_o wicked_a practice_n of_o man_n what_o be_v it_o not_o wickedness_n enough_o for_o thou_o to_o have_v any_o desire_n that_o there_o shall_v any_o evil_a befall_v thus_o we_o see_v how_o we_o be_v to_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o prayer_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o prayer_n but_o now_o for_o the_o manner_n of_o prayer_n the_o most_o thing_n i_o confess_v be_v there_o first_o when_o we_o come_v to_o prayer_n we_o must_v be_v sure_a to_o pray_v with_o understanding_n 1_o cor._n 14._o 15._o what_o be_v it_o then_o i_o will_v pray_v with_o the_o spirit_n and_o will_v pray_v with_o understand_v also_o god_n do_v not_o love_v the_o sacrifice_n of_o fool_n we_o must_v not_o come_v babble_v to_o god_n in_o prayer_n to_o the_o evil_a of_o the_o wander_a of_o our_o spirit_n in_o prayer_n we_o shall_v take_v heed_n of_o the_o wander_a of_o our_o spirit_n in_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n and_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o so_o in_o prayer_n the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v much_o trouble_v with_o the_o wander_a of_o their_o thought_n both_o in_o word_n and_o sacrament_n and_o it_o be_v their_o great_a burden_n and_o shall_v be_v so_o but_o i_o never_o hear_v any_o more_o complain_n of_o the_o wander_a of_o their_o spirit_n then_o in_o the_o time_n of_o prayer_n the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v much_o pester_v in_o their_o spirit_n with_o this_o evil_a it_o be_v very_o grievous_a unto_o they_o and_o many_o of_o they_o go_v under_o it_o as_o a_o grievous_a burden_n all_o their_o day_n the_o chief_a burden_n that_o be_v upon_o their_o spirit_n be_v their_o wander_a in_o prayer_n so_o
trial_n of_o this_o thou_o have_v lose_v 〈◊〉_d prayer_n by_o vain_a thought_n and_o thou_o have_v be_v trouble_v for_o 〈◊〉_d and_o yet_o they_o come_v again_o do_v but_o try_v for_o this_o week_n as_o i_o remember_v i_o say_v in_o the_o point_n of_o passion_n and_o anger_n that_o we_o shall_v resolve_v with_o ourselves_o well_o whatsoever_o fall_v out_o this_o morning_n i_o be_o resolve_v i_o will_v bear_v it_o so_o bethink_v thyself_o how_o many_o prayer_n thou_o have_v lose_v by_o vain_a thought_n and_o now_o 〈◊〉_d thy_o resolution_n and_o covenant_n with_o god_n that_o for_o this_o prayer_n i_o will_v 〈◊〉_d myself_o against_o they_o whatsoever_o pain_n i_o take_v i_o will_v be_v sure_a yet_o withal_o to_o look_v up_o to_o god_n grace_n to_o assist_v one_o i_o will_v be_v sure_a this_o prayer_n to_o keep_v my_o heart_n close_o to_o what_o i_o be_o about_o &_o perhaps_o that_o will_v help_v you_o a_o little_a but_o yet_o some_o vain_a thought_n will_v come_v for_o all_o that_o duty_n though_o now_o thou_o feel_v thy_o heart_n so_o wild_a that_o thou_o think_v it_o be_v impossible_a to_o bring_v it_o into_o order_n but_o certain_o by_o such_o a_o mean_n thy_o heart_n will_v be_v bring_v into_o order_n three_o be_v sure_a to_o set_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n before_o you_o in_o prayer_n have_v a_o real_a light_n of_o the_o infinite_a greatness_n majesty_n and_o glory_n of_o that_o you_o present_v yourselves_o unto_o when_o you_o be_v be_v call_v upon_o he_o if_o so_o be_v that_o thou_o can_v have_v a_o real_a fight_n of_o god_n in_o his_o glory_n it_o will_v keep_v thy_o heart_n close_o to_o the_o duty_n as_o if_o a_o man_n be_v wander_v with_o his_o eye_n and_o look_v after_o every_o feather_n if_o the_o king_n or_o some_o great_a person_n come_v into_o the_o room_n all_o his_o thought_n will_v be_v about_o the_o king_n or_o the_o great_a person_n that_o be_v come_v in_o so_o if_o you_o will_v present_v the_o lord_n in_o his_o glory_n and_o greatness_n excellency_n majesty_n and_o power_n before_o you_o and_o what_o a_o dreadful_a god_n he_o be_v in_o himself_o and_o yet_o what_o a_o merciful_a god_n he_o be_v to_o we_o in_o his_o son_n this_o will_v mighty_o compose_v our_o heart_n certain_o man_n and_o woman_n that_o be_v so_o wander_v in_o their_o prayer_n it_o be_v because_o their_o eye_n be_v not_o open_a to_o look_v upon_o god_n in_o his_o glory_n they_o be_v as_o it_o be_v dream_v and_o do_v not_o apprehend_v that_o god_n stand_v and_o look_v upon_o they_o and_o observe_v they_o and_o that_o god_n take_v notice_n of_o every_o wander_a thought_n that_o come_v from_o they_o they_o do_v not_o consider_v that_o god_n do_v converse_v with_o the_o thought_n of_o man_n as_o well_o as_o man_n do_v with_o the_o word_n of_o man_n that_o be_v a_o three_o rule_n four_o take_v heed_n thou_o be_v not_o deceive_v because_o that_o those_o thought_n thou_o have_v in_o prayer_n do_v not_o appear_v to_o be_v very_o evil_a in_o
