benefit_n and_o good_a unto_o they_o than_o that_o which_o be_v lay_v up_o or_o out_o for_o they_o otherwise_o and_o to_o this_o purpose_n ambrose_n ambrose_n that_o say_v of_o jerome_n unto_o of_o hyperbole_n and_o say_v it_o can_v be_v otherwise_o for_o it_o be_v worthy_a our_o take_a notice_n of_o by_o the_o way_n that_o when_o we_o pray_v for_o the_o repentance_n or_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o child_n or_o friend_n or_o whoever_o if_o we_o pray_v regular_o and_o agreeable_a to_o the_o mind_n and_o will_n of_o god_n we_o do_v neither_o pray_v simple_o or_o absolute_o for_o his_o repentance_n as_o if_o in_o case_n he_o shall_v not_o be_v bring_v to_o repentance_n than_o god_n can_v be_v say_v to_o have_v hear_v or_o grant_v our_o prayer_n nor_o yet_o conditional_o neither_o in_o such_o a_o sense_n as_o if_o we_o shall_v or_o in_o duty_n ought_v to_o leave_v he_o at_o liberty_n whether_o he_o will_v grant_v our_o prayer_n in_o this_o kind_n or_o no_o for_o he_o have_v not_o leave_v himself_o at_o liberty_n in_o such_o case_n neither_o will_v he_o have_v we_o leave_v he_o at_o such_o a_o liberty_n but_o when_o we_o pray_v for_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o child_n husband_n wife_n or_o any_o other_o person_n our_o prayer_n ought_v to_o be_v absolute_a in_o this_o kind_n that_o he_o will_v be_v please_v to_o vouchsafe_v to_o entreat_v the_o person_n for_o who_o we_o pray_v very_o gracious_o and_o effectual_o by_o his_o spirit_n in_o order_n to_o the_o bring_v he_o to_o repentance_n that_o he_o will_v move_v and_o incline_v his_o will_n with_o a_o high_a hand_n of_o persuasive_a power_n that_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a he_o may_v not_o any_o long_o remain_v impenitent_a this_o be_v the_o tenor_n or_o effect_v of_o any_o prayer_n that_o can_v be_v make_v advise_o and_o regular_o according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n for_o the_o repentance_n or_o conversion_n of_o any_o but_o if_o this_o be_v the_o sense_n of_o our_o prayer_n that_o god_n will_v compel_v man_n to_o repent_v or_o which_o be_v the_o same_o though_o there_o have_v be_v much_o beat_n of_o the_o air_n to_o find_v or_o rather_o to_o make_v a_o difference_n that_o he_o will_v incline_v his_o will_n by_o a_o irresistible_a power_n hereunto_o this_o be_v not_o according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n nor_o do_v he_o convert_v any_o man_n nor_o will_v he_o upon_o the_o prayer_n of_o a_o angel_n in_o heaven_n bring_v any_o man_n to_o repentance_n upon_o such_o term_n as_o these_o nor_o do_v it_o stand_v with_o his_o wisdom_n nor_o with_o the_o great_a end_n of_o his_o glory_n which_o he_o have_v on_o foot_n and_o carry_v on_o from_o day_n to_o day_n in_o his_o government_n and_o administration_n of_o the_o world_n yea_o and_o though_o the_o repentance_n of_o the_o person_n for_o who_o we_o pray_v for_o upon_o such_o term_n shall_v follow_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v impute_v to_o our_o prayer_n as_o if_o they_o obtain_v it_o though_o haply_o that_o excitation_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o soul_n of_o such_o a_o person_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n as_o in_o the_o hear_n of_o a_o sermon_n or_o some_o other_o like_o opportunity_n by_o the_o advantage_n whereof_o he_o may_v possible_o be_v bring_v to_o repent_v and_o believe_v and_o in_o such_o interposure_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n as_o these_o he_o be_v not_o to_o be_v conceive_v to_o make_v any_o and_o with_o god_n in_o relation_n to_o his_o case_n and_o condition_n as_o if_o he_o himself_o have_v make_v such_o a_o improvement_n of_o what_o he_o have_v which_o be_v wont_a to_o bring_v man_n of_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n man_n and_o woman_n without_o some_o competent_a fullness_n of_o the_o spirit_n will_v ever_o and_o anon_o be_v apt_a to_o stumble_v and_o betray_v the_o honour_n of_o god_n and_o the_o peace_n and_o comfort_n of_o their_o own_o soul_n for_o where_o there_o be_v not_o such_o a_o fullness_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n there_o must_v needs_o be_v space_n leave_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o soul_n of_o man_n for_o foolish_a apprehension_n vain_a desire_n and_o carnal_a projection_n to_o lodge_v there_o and_o these_o will_v
god_n they_o do_v not_o simple_o mention_v or_o insist_v upon_o what_o they_o desire_v but_o they_o desire_v it_o in_o god_n way_n and_o by_o that_o mean_n by_o which_o they_o know_v god_n be_v wont_a or_o likely_a to_o confer_v it_o thus_o when_o christ_n pray_v for_o the_o sanctification_n of_o his_o apostle_n he_o pray_v not_o simple_o that_o god_n will_v sanctify_v they_o but_o that_o he_o will_v sanctify_v they_o by_o his_o truth_n because_o he_o know_v that_o that_o be_v god_n stand_v way_n and_o method_n by_o which_o he_o be_v wont_a to_o sanctify_v man_n so_o the_o apostle_n here_o know_v that_o god_n will_v not_o do_v that_o great_a thing_n for_o the_o ephesian_n which_o he_o pray_v for_o on_o their_o behalf_n viz._n that_o they_o may_v be_v strengthen_v with_o might_n in_o their_o inner_a man_n be_v make_v glorious_a in_o their_o faith_n and_o believe_v like_o prince_n but_o by_o the_o interposure_n of_o his_o spirit_n he_o frame_v his_o prayer_n for_o it_o according_o and_o this_o be_v further_a to_o be_v consider_v that_o to_o be_v strengthen_v with_o might_n in_o the_o inner_a man_n suppose_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n must_v advance_v above_o his_o ordinary_a degree_n of_o act_v to_o effect_v it_o he_o must_v not_o only_o act_v or_o interpose_v in_o man_n to_o work_v it_o but_o at_o such_o a_o rate_n of_o energy_n and_o power_n which_o be_v proportionable_a to_o such_o a_o effect_n and_o that_o be_v another_o rule_n to_o be_v mind_v when_o any_o thing_n be_v prescribe_v or_o mention_v by_o way_n of_o mean_n in_o order_n to_o such_o or_o such_o a_o end_n though_o the_o proportion_n of_o the_o mean_n be_v not_o express_v yet_o it_o be_v to_o be_v estimate_v and_o judge_v of_o by_o the_o nature_n and_o quality_n of_o the_o end_n to_o be_v obtain_v thereby_o but_o we_o have_v not_o time_n to_o stand_v upon_o this_o so_o that_o the_o apostle_n we_o see_v plain_o suppose_v this_o that_o there_o be_v no_o strengthen_n with_o might_n in_o the_o inner_a man_n which_o in_o plain_a english_a be_v that_o there_o be_v no_o believe_v at_o any_o high_a rate_n but_o by_o the_o interposure_n of_o the_o spirit_n yea_o and_o of_o such_o a_o interposure_n wherein_o he_o must_v give_v out_o himself_o at_o another_o manner_n of_o rate_n than_o it_o be_v requisite_a that_o he_o shall_v do_v in_o make_v man_n simple_o to_o believe_v second_o sect._n 9_o concern_v the_o second_o particular_a which_o be_v when_o this_o faith_n do_v triumph_n in_o the_o soul_n when_o a_o man_n be_v full_a of_o the_o glory_n and_o power_n of_o it_o to_o give_v a_o adequate_a and_o commensurable_a account_n of_o it_o to_o show_v man_n this_o faith_n in_o its_o just_a magnitude_n by_o work_n and_o not_o simple_o so_o but_o by_o such_o a_o systeme_n of_o work_n such_o a_o constant_a tenor_n of_o conversation_n which_o according_a to_o the_o interpretation_n of_o a_o man_n compare_v cause_n with_o effect_n it_o may_v be_v rational_o say_v that_o such_o a_o series_n of_o action_n such_o a_o strain_n of_o life_n and_o conversation_n can_v proceed_v from_o can_v call_v any_o other_o faith_n or_o belief_n father_n or_o mother_n but_o only_o such_o a_o faith_n which_o lift_v up_o its_o head_n unto_o the_o heaven_n for_o unless_o such_o a_o thing_n as_o this_o be_v do_v we_o shall_v not_o fill_v up_o the_o deep_a pit_n of_o the_o poverty_n of_o the_o world_n nor_o repair_v the_o sad_a breach_n which_o ignorance_n security_n and_o unbelief_n have_v make_v upon_o the_o safety_n of_o it_o for_o this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o the_o world_n as_o before_o be_v signify_v it_o be_v very_o low_a the_o vanity_n sloathfulness_n and_o folly_n of_o it_o have_v bring_v it_o to_o a_o morsel_n of_o bread_n now_o as_o when_o the_o visive_a faculty_n or_o sight_n be_v dim_a or_o any_o way_n maim_v or_o weak_a the_o object_n have_v need_n be_v very_o visible_a or_o to_o have_v many_o degree_n of_o visibility_n or_o lightsomness_n in_o it_o to_o produce_v or_o cause_v a_o act_n of_o sensation_n in_o like_a manner_n the_o capacity_n and_o principle_n in_o the_o world_n whereby_o it_o be_v in_o any_o degree_n apprehensive_a or_o sensible_a of_o the_o thing_n of_o its_o own_o recovery_n welfare_n and_o peace_n be_v depress_v scant_o and_o low_a they_o who_o desire_v to_o work_v effectual_o upon_o it_o and_o make_v it_o serviceable_a unto_o the_o world_n notwithstanding_o must_v present_v it_o with_o such_o thing_n which_o be_v very_o notorious_a and_o next_o to_o miraculous_a in_o their_o awaken_n effect_v and_o restore_a property_n or_o as_o when_o the_o stone_n or_o wood_n be_v hard_a or_o very_o resistive_a against_o the_o incision_n or_o impression_n that_o be_v desire_v to_o be_v make_v upon_o it_o the_o tool_n or_o instrument_n use_v for_o this_o purpose_n have_v need_n be_v sharp_a and_o keen_a so_o the_o temper_n of_o the_o world_n be_v very_o obdurate_a and_o stubborn_a against_o such_o impression_n that_o be_v like_a to_o benefit_n and_o accommodate_v they_o in_o their_o miserable_a condition_n that_o which_o be_v any_o way_n probable_a or_o hopeful_a to_o work_v a_o cure_n upon_o they_o or_o to_o bring_v they_o to_o a_o effectual_a and_o lively_a remembrance_n of_o themselves_o must_v have_v so_o much_o the_o more_o of_o the_o spirit_n and_o of_o the_o life_n of_o the_o vigour_n and_o power_n of_o faith_n in_o it_o therefore_o if_o man_n way_n and_o work_n shall_v be_v but_o low_o and_o ordinary_a and_o but_o level_a with_o those_o of_o the_o common_a sort_n of_o man_n in_o the_o world_n yea_o if_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v much_o above_o they_o and_o magnify_v themselves_o beyond_o they_o though_o it_o be_v suppose_v that_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o person_n we_o speak_v of_o be_v very_o royal_a and_o princelike_a yet_o will_v they_o not_o come_v at_o the_o world_n nor_o reach_v the_o obdurate_a conscience_n and_o besot_v judgement_n of_o man_n by_o the_o mediation_n or_o interposure_n of_o such_o work_n and_o way_n the_o faith_n which_o be_v in_o man_n though_o it_o be_v of_o never_o so_o large_a a_o growth_n and_o stature_n yet_o will_v it_o not_o reach_v the_o sore_a and_o sad_a malady_n of_o the_o world_n but_o only_o by_o a_o outstretch_a arm_n of_o work_n for_o let_v i_o say_v this_o though_o haply_o the_o thing_n may_v seem_v otherwise_o unto_o you_o that_o a_o man_n work_n do_v not_o always_o hold_v out_o weight_n and_o measure_n with_o his_o faith_n nor_o be_v the_o great_a believer_n always_o the_o great_a doer_n a_o full_a fountain_n indeed_o always_o send_v forth_o a_o stream_n of_o water_n answerable_a to_o the_o fullness_n of_o it_o but_o this_o be_v because_o a_o fountain_n be_v a_o natural_a cause_n and_o so_o always_o give_v out_o itself_o to_o the_o uttermost_a of_o its_o power_n whereas_o a_o believer_n be_v a_o voluntary_a agent_n may_v moderate_v and_o temper_v himself_o as_o he_o please_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o those_o principle_n out_o of_o which_o he_o act_v hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o some_o man_n though_o they_o be_v large_a in_o believe_v yet_o be_v they_o straight_o in_o give_v testimony_n to_o their_o own_o faith_n we_o know_v many_o have_v the_o gift_n of_o wisdom_n who_o have_v not_o the_o gift_n of_o utterance_n many_o that_o be_v very_o excellent_a in_o wisdom_n and_o deep_a in_o understanding_n yet_o they_o be_v flow_v of_o utterance_n and_o so_o under_o a_o great_a disadvantage_n to_o get_v forth_o their_o wisdom_n so_o many_o have_v a_o excellent_a and_o a_o glorious_a work_n of_o faith_n yet_o may_v they_o suffer_v through_o a_o ineptitude_n or_o backwardness_n of_o spirit_n to_o assert_v that_o high_a degree_n of_o faith_n by_o work_n proportionable_a thereunto_o or_o any_o way_n competent_a to_o evince_v what_o manner_n of_o faith_n it_o be_v that_o reign_v the_o frequent_a and_o fervent_a exhortation_n unto_o good_a work_n and_o fruitfulness_n in_o well-doing_n give_v by_o the_o lord_n christ_n himself_o and_o by_o his_o apostle_n unto_o believer_n sufficient_o prove_v that_o the_o faith_n of_o man_n do_v not_o necessary_o or_o always_o give_v out_o its_o strength_n in_o good_a work_n for_o what_o need_n he_o to_o press_v and_o importune_v man_n to_o such_o thing_n which_o they_o can_v refrain_v or_o forbear_v whether_o they_o be_v persuade_v or_o press_v unto_o they_o or_o no_o yea_o persuasion_n and_o exhortation_n be_v most_o proper_a if_o not_o only_o proper_a where_o there_o be_v some_o degree_n at_o least_o of_o a_o backwardness_n or_o indisposition_n unto_o the_o thing_n exhort_v or_o persuade_v unto_o in_o those_o who_o be_v persuade_v and_o exhort_v unto_o they_o when_o the_o apostle_n paul_n write_v thus_o to_o titus_n tit._n 3.14_o and_o let_v we_o also_o learn_v to_o maintain_v good_a work_n for_o
for_o we_o with_o god_n and_o then_o what_o kind_n of_o help_n shall_v we_o receive_v from_o he_o but_o then_o second_o the_o spirit_n be_v say_v to_o make_v intercession_n for_o we_o with_o groan_n distinct_a will_n of_o the_o spirit_n from_o the_o will_n of_o god_n i_o reply_v that_o the_o word_n do_v not_o signify_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n here_o be_v no_o word_n which_o ought_v and_o as_o it_o become_v they_o to_o pray_v and_o here_o be_v a_o direct_a answer_n relate_v to_o those_o infirmity_n which_o our_o apostle_n have_v express_o affirm_v to_o be_v in_o the_o saint_n four_o that_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n on_o the_o behalf_n of_o the_o saint_n do_v not_o lie_v in_o this_o to_o pray_v for_o the_o saint_n a_o part_n in_o heaven_n which_o be_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o author_n of_o this_o argument_n be_v evident_a from_o joh._n 14.16_o where_o our_o saviour_n say_v that_o when_o he_o shall_v go_v away_o he_o will_v pray_v the_o father_n and_o he_o will_v give_v you_o another_o comforter_n that_o he_o may_v abide_v with_o you_o for_o ever_o even_o the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n etc._n etc._n so_o that_o the_o work_n which_o the_o spirit_n have_v to_o do_v for_o the_o saint_n be_v not_o in_o heaven_n since_o the_o ascension_n of_o christ_n into_o heaven_n heaven_n be_v not_o the_o stage_n or_o theatre_n where_o the_o holy_a ghost_n act_v and_o bestir_v himself_o on_o the_o behalf_n of_o the_o saint_n but_o now_o he_o be_v come_v down_o upon_o the_o earth_n and_o his_o great_a business_n which_o he_o have_v to_o do_v lie_v in_o and_o upon_o any_o other_o term_n than_o of_o man_n apply_v themselves_o unto_o he_o by_o prayer_n for_o the_o obtain_v this_o gift_n of_o he_o yea_o his_o declare_v of_o himself_o in_o this_o point_n unto_o man_n i_o mean_v that_o upon_o their_o prayer_n he_o will_v give_v his_o spirit_n unto_o they_o be_v a_o clear_a argument_n that_o he_o be_v ready_a and_o willing_a to_o give_v he_o for_o will_v any_o man_n teach_v another_o how_o or_o by_o what_o mean_v he_o may_v come_v by_o such_o or_o such_o a_o thing_n which_o he_o have_v no_o mind_n or_o desire_v that_o he_o shall_v have_v or_o come_v by_o sure_o no_o man_n will_v do_v it_o the_o reason_n then_o why_o god_n require_v prayer_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o man_n in_o order_n to_o the_o obtain_n of_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n from_o he_o be_v not_o to_o make_v the_o obtain_n of_o the_o gift_n more_o difficult_a or_o because_o he_o be_v in_o any_o degree_n loath_a or_o unwilling_a to_o give_v he_o but_o because_o the_o transcendent_a excellency_n or_o infiniteness_n of_o his_o wisdom_n require_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o this_o of_o he_o judge_v it_o meet_v to_o enact_v such_o a_o law_n whereby_o he_o shall_v this_o kind_n to_o give_v he_o by_o enjoin_v man_n to_o pray_v for_o he_o so_o neither_o do_v his_o require_v righteousness_n and_o holiness_n in_o man_n to_o render_v they_o capable_a of_o thing_n speak_v of_o seem_v good_a unto_o the_o apostle_n and_o the_o rest_n apart_o from_o the_o holy_a ghost_n or_o without_o the_o dictate_v of_o the_o notion_n or_o apprehension_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n nor_o again_o that_o it_o seem_v good_a unto_o the_o holy_a ghost_n simple_o consider_v or_o apart_o and_o extrinsical_a unto_o they_o for_o how_o then_o can_v they_o have_v tell_v they_o that_o it_o seem_v good_a unto_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o they_o but_o it_o seem_v good_a unto_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o we_o the_o meaning_n be_v that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v enlighten_v and_o reveal_v the_o thing_n unto_o they_o and_o give_v they_o direction_n and_o put_v they_o upon_o it_o to_o send_v this_o counsel_n unto_o the_o gentile_n namely_o to_o impose_v upon_o they_o by_o way_n of_o burden_n and_o charge_n no_o other_o thing_n but_o that_o they_o abstain_v from_o such_o and_o such_o thing_n so_o that_o here_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o the_o apostle_n be_v be_v much_o troublesome_a unto_o we_o they_o will_v not_o be_v able_a to_o conceive_v as_o james_n speak_v jam._n 1.15_o lust_n when_o it_o have_v conceive_v bring_v forth_o sin_n and_o sin_n when_o it_o be_v finish_v bring_v forth_o death_n as_o you_o have_v some_o plant_n and_o tree_n that_o with_o much_o a_o do_v will_v grow_v and_o live_v for_o a_o while_n in_o the_o earth_n or_o soil_n or_o air_n but_o will_v not_o thrive_v or_o flourish_v or_o bear_v fruit_n according_a to_o their_o kind_n but_o may_v be_v resemble_v to_o the_o widow_n the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o live_v in_o pleasure_n they_o be_v dead_a even_o whilst_o they_o live_v so_o likewise_o when_o you_o be_v fill_v with_o the_o spirit_n though_o the_o flesh_n will_v be_v flesh_n still_o and_o be_v ever_o and_o anon_o attempt_v and_o put_v forth_o yet_o there_o will_v be_v no_o great_a heart_n or_o strength_n in_o these_o attempt_n they_o will_v be_v but_o faint_a and_o weak_a as_o despair_v of_o any_o gratification_n or_o fulfil_n this_o be_v evident_a from_o the_o scripture_n and_o particular_o from_o that_o gal._n 5._o from_o whence_o we_o even_o now_o hear_v that_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o impulse_n and_o bearing_n thereof_o upon_o the_o conscience_n and_o soul_n be_v stiff_a and_o strong_a and_o with_o power_n the_o inclination_n motion_n and_o lusting_n of_o the_o flesh_n will_v be_v
