long_o in_o prayer_n for_o as_o one_o say_v the_o true_a effect_n of_o prayer_n consist_v not_o in_o bare_a word_n nor_o in_o the_o multitude_n of_o word_n that_o we_o speak_v but_o in_o the_o cogitation_n and_o faithful_a desire_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o it_o be_v not_o our_o word_n but_o our_o desire_n that_o enter_v into_o the_o secret_a ear_n of_o the_o all-hearing_a al-giving_a and_o all-seeing_a god_n how_o much_o than_o do_v they_o wrong_v the_o majesty_n of_o god_n and_o the_o salvation_n of_o their_o soul_n which_o run_v to_o prayer_n as_o unto_o a_o stage_n play_v without_o any_o preparation_n without_o any_o faith_n or_o without_o any_o zeal_n but_o heap_v up_o prayer_n &_o yet_o scarce_o think_v what_o they_o say_v or_o to_o who_o they_o do_v pray_v the_o astronomer_n much_o more_o careful_a watchful_a and_o fearful_a ought_v every_o man_n to_o be_v in_o prayer_n which_o be_v his_o conference_n with_o god_n therefore_o he_o that_o will_v pray_v unto_o god_n effectual_o ought_v in_o the_o time_n of_o prayer_n whole_o to_o exercise_v his_o mind_n and_o his_o sense_n in_o the_o constant_a faithful_a devout_a and_o fervent_a call_n upon_o his_o creator_n have_v mind_n on_o no_o other_o matter_n then_o on_o his_o meditation_n which_o he_o do_v present_a nor_o on_o any_o other_o person_n than_o his_o god_n to_o who_o he_o do_v deliver_v they_o cap._n v._o a_o preparation_n to_o prayer_n have_v consider_v and_o discuss_v somewhat_o the_o property_n of_o prayer_n to_o god_n and_o what_o it_o be_v the_o necessity_n manner_n and_o profit_n thereof_o it_o will_v not_o be_v amiss_o or_o unnecessary_a to_o show_v something_o of_o the_o preparation_n that_o shall_v be_v make_v before_o we_o do_v enter_v into_o this_o holy_a exercise_n for_o as_o before_o we_o fâ—ll_v into_o any_o activity_n of_o the_o body_n exercise_n of_o the_o mind_n or_o other_o action_n of_o account_n which_o we_o desire_v shall_v be_v acceptable_a unto_o they_o before_o needful_a that_o before_o this_o spiritual_a exercise_n of_o prayer_n a_o sound_a preparation_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o soul_n shall_v still_o be_v premise_v otherwise_o it_o may_v fall_v out_o in_o this_o holy_a exercise_n as_o it_o do_v in_o matter_n of_o far_a loss_n moment_n that_o 〈◊〉_d that_o be_v not_o well_o prepare_v may_v be_v soon_o entrap_v &_o distract_v the_o best_a rule_n therefore_o that_o my_o simple_a judgement_n can_v afford_v for_o preparation_n to_o prayer_n be_v these_o 1_o first_o before_o we_o begin_v our_o prayer_n we_o shall_v fall_v into_o some_o strict_a examination_n of_o ourselves_o touch_v our_o sin_n and_o the_o estate_n of_o our_o life_n wherein_o we_o may_v best_o consider_v what_o we_o have_v most_o need_n to_o crave_v at_o god_n hand_n 2_o next_o we_o must_v call_v to_o remembance_n the_o mercy_n of_o god_n his_o justice_n his_o judgment_n and_o his_o wonderful_a work_n whereby_o in_o our_o prayer_n we_o may_v learn_v and_o use_v aswell_o as_o in_o the_o rest_n of_o our_o life_n to_o love_v he_o for_o his_o mercy_n to_o fear_v he_o for_o his_o justice_n and_o judgement_n aswell_o as_o to_o magnify_v he_o for_o his_o wonderful_a work_n which_o cogitation_n conjoin_v may_v make_v our_o follow_a meditation_n more_o perfect_a and_o profitable_a 3_o three_o before_o we_o fall_v unto_o prayer_n we_o ought_v to_o sequester_v our_o sense_n from_o all_o wander_a idle_a &_o vain_a cogitation_n and_o to_o cast_v away_o all_o evil_a thought_n as_o helias_n do_v cast_v his_o mantle_n to_o the_o earth_n when_o he_o ascend_v to_o heaven_n resolve_v full_o with_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n who_o we_o purpose_v then_o to_o serve_v not_o to_o entertain_v any_o worldly_a thought_n that_o may_v withdraw_v our_o devotion_n from_o his_o divine_a majesty_n but_o to_o banish_v all_o passion_n pleasure_n and_o perturbation_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o to_o recall_v unto_o memory_n our_o last_o and_o most_o press_a sin_n by_o a_o inward_a feel_n of_o they_o join_v with_o repentance_n &_o a_o purpose_n to_o pray_v for_o pardon_n and_o amendment_n then_o be_v thus_o christian_o resolve_v we_o must_v yet_o before_o we_o begin_v to_o pray_v labour_v to_o bring_v with_o we_o by_o faith_n a_o lively_a and_o a_o long_a apprehension_n of_o god_n promise_n and_o mercy_n and_o a_o undoubted_a belief_n of_o his_o most_o just_a &_o heavenly_a performance_n of_o that_o which_o he_o have_v gracious_o promise_v and_o we_o do_v faithful_o pray_v for_o afterward_o when_o by_o meditation_n we_o have_v make_v this_o passage_n for_o prayer_n which_o require_v faithful_a &_o watchful_a progress_n if_o yet_o we_o find_v as_o usual_o we_o may_v find_v that_o any_o evil_a or_o vain_a thought_n do_v assalt_n we_o when_o we_o be_v come_v on_o to_o this_o holy_a exercise_n we_o must_v seek_v even_o at_o the_o first_o feel_v thereof_o to_o resist_v and_o reject_v it_o without_o give_v any_o kind_n of_o small_a entertainment_n thereto_o consider_v that_o evil_a cogitation_n be_v of_o two_o kind_n either_o immit_v or_o permit_v they_o be_v immit_v by_o the_o frailty_n of_o the_o flesh_n the_o temptation_n of_o satan_n the_o weakness_n of_o the_o inner_a sense_n be_v delude_v by_o the_o object_n which_o the_o exterior_a sense_n especial_o the_o sight_n do_v convey_v unto_o they_o and_o these_o immit_v evil_a cogitation_n do_v hurt_v the_o heavenly_a meditation_n of_o our_o prayer_n especial_o when_o they_o be_v permit_v to_o harbour_v and_o to_o remain_v within_o us._n therefore_o as_o soon_o as_o
