be_v reform_v it_o be_v true_a in_o the_o conclusion_n of_o the_o absolution_n when_o the_o minister_n speak_v to_o himself_o as_o well_o as_o the_o people_n as_o the_o result_n 〈◊〉_d his_o declaration_n of_o god_n pardon_v merâ—â—_n to_o the_o penitent_a to_o exhort_v that_o we_o shall_v beseech_v god_n to_o grant_v we_o true_a repentance_n and_o his_o holy_a spirit_n 〈◊〉_d etc._n repentance_n and_o bestow_v on_o we_o the_o grace_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n that_o such_o performance_n may_v be_v well-pleasing_a to_o he_o and_o the_o effect_n profitable_a to_o we_o render_v uâ—_n more_o pure_a and_o holy_a in_o the_o remainder_n oâ—_n our_o life_n and_o so_o secure_v our_o admittance_n into_o his_o eternal_a joy_n at_o the_o end_n thereof_o 2._o as_o the_o former_a custom_n of_o say_v after_o the_o minister_n where_o we_o shall_v attend_v and_o say_v nothing_o seem_v indecent_a so_o it_o seem_v as_o much_o if_o not_o moâ—â—_n so_o when_o the_o people_n say_v before_o he_o what_o they_o shall_v say_v after_o he_o and_o this_o appear_v to_o be_v a_o disorder_n on_o the_o forementioned_a account_n that_o it_o be_v a_o invade_v his_o ministerial_a function_n for_o he_o be_v to_o lead_v and_o guide_v the_o people_n in_o all_o the_o public_a office_n of_o religion_n and_o neither_o to_o follow_v their_o humour_n in_o the_o manner_n of_o his_o prayer_n if_o he_o be_v in_o other_o respect_n to_o order_v they_o as_o he_o please_v or_o to_o follow_v the_o measure_n of_o their_o voice_n where_o the_o word_n as_o well_o as_o the_o matter_n be_v prescribe_v though_o in_o both_o respect_n minister_n be_v fain_o sometime_o to_o depart_v from_o their_o right_n and_o as_o i_o have_v know_v in_o former_a time_n many_o that_o use_v the_o way_n of_o extempore_o prayer_n before_o their_o sermon_n only_o to_o humour_v the_o people_n when_o in_o their_o own_o judgement_n they_o much_o prefer_v the_o constant_a use_n of_o a_o well-composed_a form_n so_o i_o know_v some_o now_o who_o do_v read_v the_o prayer_n very_o fast_o and_o that_o beyond_o what_o the_o solemnity_n of_o the_o matter_n can_v bear_v only_o as_o i_o charitable_o hope_v because_o they_o see_v the_o people_n so_o subject_a to_o this_o disorder_n of_o run_v before_o they_o which_o they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o remedy_v otherwise_o or_o because_o they_o see_v some_o hate_n to_o be_v long_o at_o church_n but_o beside_o this_o there_o be_v other_o ill_a effect_n of_o this_o custom_n in_o respect_n of_o ourselves_o and_o othersâ—_n for_o it_o much_o hâ—â—ders_v the_o devout_a operation_n of_o the_o mindâ—_n which_o be_v much_o assist_v 〈◊〉_d hear_v the_o matter_n first_o speak_v by_o the_o minister_n and_o by_o fix_v on_o the_o intent_n consideration_n thereof_o which_o he_o speak_v so_o as_o wâ—_n can_v speak_v afterward_o with_o much_o greateâ—_n fervency_n and_o affection_n as_o every_o one_o experience_n will_v witness_v that_o will_v but_o trâ—_n the_o thing_n and_o again_o those_o that_o have_v so_o accustom_v themselves_o to_o speak_v before_o the_o minister_n be_v at_o a_o far_o great_a loss_n to_o say_v such_o new_a prayer_n or_o penitential_a psalm_n which_o be_v sometime_o order_v on_o fast_n to_o be_v say_v with_o the_o minister_n than_o those_o who_o be_v right_o practise_v in_o the_o regular_a way_n for_o that_o make_v it_o easy_a to_o say_v and_o that_o very_o decent_o such_o thing_n after_o the_o minister_n as_o we_o never_o hear_v before_o for_o if_o we_o attend_v well_o unto_o the_o main_a of_o the_o sentence_n which_o we_o be_v to_o repeat_v we_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o guess_v at_o the_o conclusion_n so_o that_o we_o need_v not_o stay_v till_o he_o have_v quite_o do_v before_o we_o begin_v but_o may_v hear_v the_o last_o while_o we_o speak_v the_o first_o so_o as_o to_o say_v all_o right_a and_o may_v come_v up_o with_o he_o in_o the_o conclusion_n as_o be_v most_o decent_a and_o this_o will_v make_v much_o for_o the_o solemn_a performance_n of_o the_o service_n on_o extraordinary_a time_n wherein_o now_o for_o the_o most_o part_n only_o the_o minister_n and_o clerk_n â—re_n speaker_n and_o the_o congregation_n sit_v and_o look_v on_o which_o to_o i_o show_v very_o â—ll_o but_o further_a i_o have_v hear_v some_o complain_n that_o come_v over_o from_o the_o nonconformist_n to_o our_o church_n and_o attend_v our_o prayer_n that_o this_o be_v to_o they_o a_o most_o offensive_a disorder_n and_o that_o it_o tend_v very_o much_o to_o distract_v their_o devotion_n when_o those_o that_o â—it_n by_o they_o thus_o ramble_v over_o the_o prayer_n and_o be_v at_o the_o end_n before_o the_o minister_n be_v half_a way_n and_o i_o believe_v it_o can_v but_o give_v some_o disturbance_n to_o the_o minister_n himself_o i_o be_o sure_a it_o have_v be_v no_o small_a offence_n to_o i_o so_o that_o i_o can_v hardly_o forbear_v tell_v they_o of_o it_o but_o that_o i_o consider_v it_o require_v more_o sedate_n discourse_n than_o that_o season_n will_v afford_v and_o this_o be_v one_o chief_a cause_n i_o engage_v in_o this_o work_n and_o i_o hope_v those_o who_o have_v not_o consider_v this_o matter_n will_v be_v persuade_v by_o what_o i_o have_v write_v to_o order_v themselves_o better_a for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v the_o 3d._a thing_n be_v that_o the_o people_n general_o answer_v the_o he_o may_v mind_v we_o that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o ordinary_a read_v those_o part_n of_o scripture_n for_o instruction_n but_o the_o repeat_v they_o as_o a_o office_n of_o praise_n and_o solemn_a worship_n to_o almighty_a god_n i_o say_v the_o minister_n on_o that_o account_n be_v order_v to_o say_v praise_v you_o the_o lord_n and_o the_o people_n to_o answer_v the_o lord_n name_n be_v be_v call_v new_a for_o its_o excellency_n and_o perpetuety_n above_o the_o old_a and_o report_v to_o we_o either_o the_o wonderful_a work_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n their_o holy_a and_o incomparable_a doctrine_n or_o perfect_a and_o exemplary_a life_n can_v be_v too_o diligent_o and_o reverent_o attend_v to_o and_o i_o shall_v think_v those_o who_o have_v strength_n of_o body_n that_o follow_v be_v the_o creed_n which_o contain_v those_o matter_n in_o which_o aâ—â—_n christian_n be_v of_o one_o mind_n all_o that_o belieuâ—_v with_o their_o heart_n to_o righteousness_n and_o god_n and_o our_o saviour_n that_o no_o man_n that_o consider_v it_o can_v choose_v but_o stand_v up_o and_o bear_v his_o part_n with_o we_o and_o he_o that_o find_v no_o spiritual_a joy_n and_o elevation_n of_o mind_n in_o repeat_v the_o creed_n can_v have_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o natural_a delight_n in_o hear_v the_o most_o excellent_a sermon_n or_o ravish_a prayer_n for_o neither_o of_o these_o can_v have_v any_o matter_n that_o be_v more_o transport_v and_o if_o it_o be_v only_o the_o word_n or_o passion_n of_o the_o speaker_n that_o affect_v we_o it_o be_v no_o spiritual_a delight_n let_v those_o therefore_o take_v heed_n who_o regard_v not_o to_o honour_n god_n and_o express_v the_o joy_n of_o their_o faith_n by_o a_o due_a performance_n in_o this_o matter_n after_o explication_n and_o therefore_o the_o often_o it_o be_v repeat_v the_o more_o devout_o it_o shall_v be_v say_v and_o great_a fervency_n excite_v by_o it_o of_o which_o before_o to_o relax_v a_o little_a the_o great_a intention_n of_o mind_n that_o shall_v accompany_v all_o our_o prayer_n but_o especial_o the_o lord_n prayer_n we_o have_v that_o excellent_a response_n wherein_o the_o minister_n and_o people_n exchange_v some_o devout_a ejaculation_n for_o themselves_o for_o their_o superior_n and_o for_o their_o brethren_n which_o as_o they_o mix_v holy_a delight_n with_o fervency_n so_o they_o great_o strengthen_v the_o band_n of_o christian_a unity_n the_o rest_n of_o the_o time_n we_o spend_v in_o repeat_v several_a collect_v most_o excellent_a for_o the_o matter_n and_o comprehensive_a for_o the_o word_n in_o pray_v for_o the_o king_n and_o royal_a family_n for_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n the_o church_n and_o state_n all_o christian_n and_o all_o man_n and_o in_o give_v solemn_a thanks_o for_o god_n mercy_n to_o we_o and_o they_o in_o all_o which_o we_o shall_v strive_v to_o preserve_v a_o constant_a intention_n and_o true_a devotion_n of_o mind_n that_o of_o our_o join_n with_o the_o congregation_n therein_o but_o now_o if_o man_n have_v get_v the_o faculty_n of_o say_v the_o prayer_n ready_o by_o heart_n do_v let_v their_o tongue_n run_v their_o imitation_n say_v i_o will_v pray_v with_o the_o spirit_n but_o yet_o so_o as_o with_o the_o understanding_n also_o and_o i_o think_v we_o may_v infer_v something_o from_o hence_o for_o our_o instruction_n in_o this_o matter_n i_o have_v take_v liberty_n of_o some_o repetition_n and_o enlargement_n here_o because_o i_o have_v often_o hear_v this_o disorder_n complain_v of_o since_o the_o first_o edition_n of_o this_o book_n and_o many_o wish_v the_o reprint_n of_o it_o for_o this_o very_a reason_n that_o it_o may_v be_v lend_v or_o give_v to_o those_o in_o who_o they_o observe_v before_o the_o most_o devout_a action_n of_o the_o body_n especial_o where_o they_o can_v be_v both_o in_o perfection_n but_o our_o exactness_n in_o one_o must_v necessitate_v some_o relaxation_n in_o the_o other_o but_o there_o be_v a_o uneasiness_n that_o be_v so_o small_a that_o it_o rather_o help_v than_o hinder_v inward_a devotion_n and_o disturb_v nothing_o but_o a_o lazy_a humour_n or_o ill_a habit_n thing_n no_o way_n to_o be_v indulge_v but_o yet_o where_o there_o be_v such_o real_a infirmity_n as_o just_o excuse_v from_o stand_v or_o kneel_v upright_o etc._n etc._n man_n shall_v be_v careful_a that_o in_o what_o posture_n soever_o they_o be_v they_o make_v such_o expression_n of_o seriousness_n and_o devotion_n that_o it_o may_v appear_v to_o the_o congregation_n that_o they_o omit_v nothing_o out_o of_o laziness_n contempt_n of_o the_o order_n of_o the_o church_n or_o a_o profane_a spirit_n i_o have_v now_o run_v over_o the_o daily_a office_n of_o morning_n prayer_n and_o shall_v proceed_v no_o far_o because_o he_o that_o will_v observe_v what_o i_o have_v write_v in_o that_o can_v be_v to_o seek_v in_o order_v himself_o a_o right_n

understand_v and_o seek_v after_o god_n and_o much_o more_o than_o be_v in_o the_o apostle_n time_n where_o man_n choose_v christianity_n though_o accompany_v with_o reproach_n and_o persecution_n when_o yet_o it_o be_v say_v that_o all_o mind_a their_o own_o thing_n and_o not_o the_o thing_n of_o jesus_n christ_n the_o worship_n and_o honour_n of_o god_n and_o our_o saviour_n be_v not_o so_o dear_a to_o man_n as_o their_o secular_a advantage_n man_n do_v not_o believe_v or_o consider_v that_o it_o be_v of_o necessity_n to_o their_o salvation_n to_o love_n god_n above_o all_o to_o do_v all_o that_o ever_o they_o do_v with_o a_o great_a relation_n to_o his_o honour_n than_o to_o their_o own_o carnal_a advantage_n and_o that_o the_o careless_a neglect_n of_o these_o holy_a office_n when_o they_o may_v order_v it_o so_o as_o to_o have_v time_n to_o attend_v they_o gives_z great_a suspicion_n they_o live_v to_o themselves_o and_o not_o to_o god_n and_o be_v yet_o but_o carnal_o mind_a and_o in_o a_o state_n of_o spiritual_a death_n methinks_v therefore_o those_o who_o have_v care_n of_o man_n soul_n shall_v be_v jealous_a over_o they_o lest_o that_o all_o their_o labour_n shall_v be_v in_o vain_a while_o they_o continue_v such_o under_o their_o ministry_n and_o be_v in_o travel_n as_o woman_n with_o child_n for_o their_o regeneration_n it_o be_v certain_o a_o woeful_a sign_n when_o minister_n have_v no_o great_a concern_v than_o to_o get_v money_n and_o to_o make_v the_o best_a of_o his_o live_n and_o little_a regard_n whether_o his_o people_n be_v pious_a or_o profane_a god_n complain_v heavy_o of_o this_o in_o many_o place_n of_o scripture_n and_o it_o be_v easy_a here_o to_o declaim_v against_o it_o in_o many_o word_n if_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_o do_v by_o other_o and_o also_o so_o evident_a in_o itself_o that_o no_o minister_n that_o will_v but_o think_v on_o it_o can_v be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o great_a sinfulness_n of_o such_o a_o temper_n and_o that_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o curse_n of_o the_o damn_a for_o this_o their_o neglect_n await_v they_o in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v and_o that_o they_o be_v the_o grief_n of_o good_a man_n and_o the_o scorn_n of_o bad_a one_o in_o this_o world_n on_o that_o very_a account_n they_o can_v but_o know_v that_o it_o be_v they_o that_o make_v man_n separatist_n while_o no_o man_n that_o have_v any_o concern_v for_o his_o soul_n can_v endure_v to_o live_v under_o a_o minister_n that_o regard_v the_o soul_n of_o his_o people_n not_o half_a so_o much_o as_o he_o do_v the_o life_n of_o his_o beast_n and_o i_o wonder_v they_o can_v blame_v any_o man_n for_o endeavour_v their_o suspension_n since_o they_o can_v be_v no_o true_a christian_n who_o have_v rather_o see_v so_o many_o soul_n damn_v as_o may_v be_v in_o danger_n of_o it_o by_o such_o man_n neglect_n then_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v displace_v by_o a_o just_a suspension_n that_o a_o better_a may_v take_v their_o place_n for_o my_o part_n i_o wish_v all_o parishioner_n be_v convince_v of_o their_o duty_n in_o this_o kind_n and_o will_v endeavour_v all_o that_o be_v possible_a in_o just_a way_n to_o remove_v such_o minister_n and_o those_o that_o be_v most_o offend_v at_o this_o shall_v do_v their_o duty_n in_o this_o before_o they_o think_v of_o separate_n from_o the_o church_n and_o those_o that_o have_v not_o think_v of_o this_o which_o be_v the_o right_a way_n to_o ease_v their_o grief_n but_o run_v into_o the_o wrong_a way_n of_o separation_n let_v they_o now_o return_v at_o the_o earnest_a invitation_n of_o this_o church_n by_o her_o best_a minister_n and_o when_o they_o have_v resolve_v to_o do_v their_o duty_n to_o god_n and_o to_o the_o church_n according_a as_o the_o law_n require_v let_v they_o in_o god_n name_n see_v that_o their_o minister_n do_v they_o too_o especial_o in_o take_v care_n of_o the_o soul_n of_o their_o people_n and_o in_o perform_v what_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o the_o church_n require_v of_o they_o in_o order_n thereunto_o and_o and_o if_o by_o humble_a entreaty_n and_o a_o pious_a example_n and_o by_o due_a attendance_n for_o their_o reformation_n they_o can_v prevail_v with_o they_o they_o ought_v to_o complain_v to_o the_o bishop_n of_o the_o diocese_n to_o endeavour_v their_o suspension_n and_o that_o more_o faithful_a one_o may_v be_v entrust_v by_o they_o with_o the_o cure_n of_o their_o soul_n and_o it_o seem_v a_o great_a argument_n to_o persuade_v all_o nonconformist_n that_o be_v true_o pious_a to_o return_v to_o the_o communion_n of_o our_o church_n and_o to_o endeavour_v to_o approve_v themselves_o devout_a and_o pious_a in_o the_o office_n of_o god_n worship_n administer_v therein_o for_o that_o by_o so_o do_v they_o may_v be_v great_o helpful_a to_o the_o reformation_n of_o thing_n amiss_o to_o the_o encourage_v the_o good_a and_o remove_v unworthy_a minister_n to_o the_o honour_n of_o our_o religion_n and_o salvation_n of_o man_n soul_n and_o i_o believe_v there_o be_v many_o pious_a bishop_n in_o this_o church_n that_o will_v be_v glad_a to_o have_v such_o just_a proof_n of_o the_o misdemeanour_n and_o neglect_v of_o their_o clergy_n as_o may_v enable_v they_o to_o suspend_v such_o as_o deserve_v it_o and_o put_v into_o employment_n those_o that_o be_v able_a and_o willing_a to_o do_v better_o and_o there_o be_v many_o such_o to_o my_o knowledge_n who_o can_v have_v no_o employment_n in_o the_o church_n while_o these_o naughty_a person_n by_o the_o favour_n of_o careless_a and_o prosane_a patron_n get_v into_o good_a live_n and_o i_o look_v on_o it_o as_o none_o of_o the_o least_o mischief_n of_o separation_n that_o thereby_o those_o that_o shall_v be_v instrument_n of_o reform_v the_o parochial_a church_n by_o example_n admonition_n and_o assist_v the_o exercise_n of_o discipline_n therein_o which_o can_v take_v place_n there_o through_o the_o prevalency_n of_o profaneness_n and_o majority_n of_o evil_a man_n forsake_v they_o and_o leave_v minister_n and_o people_n to_o perish_v together_o at_o least_o for_o any_o thing_n they_o will_v do_v to_o help_v to_o save_v they_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o such_o to_o rail_v against_o ill_a minister_n and_o corrupt_a communion_n for_o if_o it_o be_v find_v that_o through_o their_o unjust_a forsake_v the_o church_n to_o join_v in_o separate_a society_n it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o parish_n can_v be_v reform_v nor_o evil_a man_n clergy_n or_o laity_n be_v expel_v as_o they_o ought_v their_o profess_a detestation_n of_o such_o will_v not_o excuse_v they_o but_o aggravate_v their_o guilt_n but_o this_o subject_n have_v be_v sufficient_o handle_v by_o other_o i_o only_o think_v those_o minister_n that_o be_v negligent_a in_o a_o charge_n of_o such_o infinite_a and_o eternal_a concernment_n so_o i_o can_v but_o declare_v my_o great_a respect_n for_o such_o as_o be_v diligent_a and_o faithful_a and_o many_o such_o there_o be_v god_n be_v thank_v in_o this_o city_n and_o kingdom_n however_o some_o nonconformist_n have_v report_v they_o so_o few_o that_o they_o be_v next_o to_o none_o and_o i_o do_v hearty_o congratulate_v the_o happy_a success_n of_o such_o minister_n such_o who_o in_o conscience_n of_o their_o assent_n and_o consent_v to_o the_o order_n of_o this_o church_n have_v take_v upon_o they_o the_o constant_a daily_a read_n of_o the_o common_a prayer_n in_o their_o parish-church_n and_o that_o do_v frequent_o administer_v the_o lord_n supper_n therein_o that_o do_v not_o make_v the_o backwardness_n of_o their_o people_n to_o come_v to_o prayer_n and_o the_o sacrament_n a_o pretence_n for_o their_o own_o neglect_n when_o they_o never_o try_v how_o forward_o they_o will_v be_v if_o they_o have_v opportunity_n and_o good_a instruction_n but_o set_v themselves_o to_o do_v their_o own_o part_n in_o wait_v on_o the_o ministries_n to_o which_o they_o be_v call_v and_o to_o persuade_v the_o people_n to_o do_v they_o in_o a_o constant_a and_o devout_a attendance_n thereon_o and_o to_o beg_v god_n blessing_n on_o their_o endeavour_n for_o their_o people_n edification_n and_o salvation_n in_o this_o way_n they_o have_v find_v success_n beyond_o their_o expectation_n the_o number_n of_o those_o
will_v mighty_o convince_v the_o dissenter_n of_o their_o sincerity_n in_o religion_n and_o silence_v their_o scandalous_a report_n of_o they_o and_o induce_v a_o great_a reverence_n and_o respect_n invisible_a thing_n and_o perform_v religious_a worship_n in_o a_o fit_a and_o decent_a manner_n nothing_o but_o reason_n will_v serve_v and_o it_o be_v the_o privilege_n of_o mankind_n alone_o and_o therein_o do_v our_o honour_n and_o felicity_n chief_o consist_v but_o alas_o how_o do_v man_n close_v their_o eye_n and_o harden_v their_o heart_n wilful_o until_o they_o provoke_v god_n to_o do_v christian_n by_o this_o character_n do_v not_o the_o most_o among_o we_o show_v a_o great_a disregard_n to_o our_o public_a prayer_n and_o seem_v not_o to_o care_v whether_o ever_o there_o be_v any_o or_o not_o it_o may_v be_v since_o law_n and_o custom_n even_o force_v they_o to_o recede_v from_o worldly_a employment_n and_o go_v to_o church_n on_o the_o lord_n day_n they_o will_v desire_v that_o then_o they_o may_v have_v a_o good_a preacher_n there_o that_o can_v entertain_v they_o with_o good_a language_n and_o quaint_a notion_n to_o please_v their_o ear_n while_o they_o little_o regard_v the_o matter_n of_o his_o sermon_n and_o much_o less_o the_o solemn_a service_n of_o our_o common_a prayer_n but_o though_o we_o have_v a_o order_n establish_v by_o law_n that_o in_o every_o parish-church_n the_o morning_n and_o evening_n prayer_n shall_v be_v say_v daily_o and_o a_o bell_n ring_v a_o convenient_a time_n before_o they_o begin_v that_o the_o people_n may_v come_v hear_v when_o they_o come_v and_o can_v take_v no_o delight_n in_o these_o spiritual_a exercise_n nay_o many_o altogether_o idle_a a_o thing_n tedious_a to_o nature_n and_o yet_o will_v not_o divert_v themselves_o with_o go_v to_o church_n these_o be_v chief_o of_o the_o female_a sex_n who_o be_v not_o so_o subject_a to_o be_v encumber_v with_o business_n and_o often_o want_v company_n or_o pastime_n have_v nothing_o else_o to_o do_v and_o yet_o though_o they_o live_v near_o church_n where_o prayer_n be_v daily_o read_v they_o seldom_o or_o never_o come_v there_o now_o what_o do_v this_o
