may_v be_v call_v a_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o so_o be_v speech_n memory_n and_o invention_n which_o nevertheless_o be_v all_o common_a to_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n and_o capable_a of_o be_v improve_v by_o industry_n and_o use_n and_o more_o apt_a to_o puff_n up_o than_o edify_v and_o to_o make_v such_o as_o have_v they_o despise_v and_o decry_v all_o that_o use_v form_n as_o formal_a superstitious_a and_o graceless_a man_n that_o want_v the_o life_n spirit_n and_o power_n of_o prayer_n and_o yet_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o many_o good_a people_n can_v testify_v this_o by_o their_o own_o experience_n that_o some_o notorious_a hypocrite_n have_v this_o gift_n of_o prayer_n and_o some_o devout_a and_o sincere_a christian_n continue_v in_o the_o use_n of_o form_n and_o reap_v the_o comfort_n and_o benefit_n of_o it_o and_o it_o be_v far_a observable_a that_o all_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n enumerate_v by_o st._n paul_n be_v
as_o his_o malice_n and_o uncharitableness_n appear_v in_o call_v we_o the_o child_n of_o the_o devil_n so_o do_v his_o pride_n also_o in_o call_v himself_o and_o his_o party_n saint_n as_o be_v manifest_a from_o the_o last_o passage_n i_o quote_v out_o of_o he_o before_o the_o father_n even_o our_o father_n to_o who_o the_o saint_n i._n e._n such_o as_o themselves_o may_v thus_o address_v prayerless_a family_n be_v much_o worse_o and_o that_o we_o must_v be_v if_o we_o be_v deny_v such_o needful_a help_n now_o what_o will_v john_n bunyan_n say_v to_o this_o untoward_a objection_n will_v they_o advise_v these_o poor_a creature_n as_o i_o be_o credible_o inform_v a_o nonconformist_a do_v a_o neighbour_n of_o he_o when_o he_o be_v desire_v to_o compose_v a_o form_n of_o prayer_n what_o reasonable_a service_n be_v this_o to_o present_a to_o almighty_a god_n or_o wherein_o be_v this_o better_a than_o the_o quaker_n silent-meeting_n and_o if_o groan_v with_o one_o family_n instead_o of_o pray_v with_o they_o be_v absurd_a and_o ridiculous_a i_o will_v fain_o know_v what_o other_o course_n such_o ignorant_a master_n must_v steer_v who_o have_v not_o this_o pretend_a gift_n of_o prayer_n certain_o there_o be_v no_o other_o remedy_n for_o they_o but_o to_o use_v the_o help_n of_o some_o pious_a form_n in_o pray_v with_o their_o family_n or_o else_o they_o must_v forbear_v pray_v with_o they_o till_o they_o have_v attain_v this_o pretend_a gift_n which_o perhaps_o may_v not_o be_v so_o long_o as_o they_o live_v and_o then_o they_o must_v never_o pray_v with_o they_o at_o all_o and_o so_o fall_v under_o the_o curse_n denounce_v against_o such_o family_n as_o call_v not_o on_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n jer._n 10.25_o where_o those_o that_o can_v pray_v in_o their_o family_n without_o it_o and_o yet_o despise_v the_o assistance_n of_o a_o form_n have_v a_o form_n of_o prayer_n make_v to_o their_o hand_n but_o it_o be_v a_o dreadful_a one_o that_o brethren_n and_o as_o if_o he_o have_v see_v and_o read_v the_o book_n of_o life_n john_n bunyan_n can_v tell_v how_o few_o of_o we_o scarce_o one_o in_o forty_o and_o how_o many_o of_o they_o yea_o this_o to_o prove_v that_o if_o they_o have_v great_a gift_n than_o they_o pretend_v to_o they_o may_v notwithstanding_o this_o be_v very_o wicked_a man_n for_o so_o be_v balaam_n and_o so_o be_v o._n cromwell_n so_o be_v major_a weir_n of_o scotland_n and_o so_o be_v some_o witch_n and_o wizard_n who_o can_v all_o pray_v in_o a_o wonderful_a manner_n and_o be_v believe_v by_o their_o follower_n to_o pray_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o far_o more_o powerful_o too_o than_o any_o tinker_n preacher_n of_o this_o age_n for_o we_o must_v careful_o distinguish_v between_o the_o miraculous_a gift_n and_o save_v grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n wicked_a man_n may_v and_o sometime_o have_v the_o former_a but_o the_o latter_a fall_n to_o the_o share_n of_o none_o but_o good_a man_n and_o the_o pray_v with_o the_o spirit_n which_o st._n paul_n speak_v of_o 1_o cor._n 14.15_o be_v such_o a_o extraordinary_a and_o miraculous_a gift_n it_o be_v pray_v in_o a_o
in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n for_o their_o continual_a observation_n as_o psal_n 116.15_o precious_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v the_o death_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o it_o be_v the_o day_n of_o their_o death_n and_o martyrdom_n and_o not_o of_o their_o birth_n which_o we_o commemorate_v not_o their_o first_o day_n in_o which_o they_o be_v bear_v into_o the_o world_n but_o the_o proceed_v to_o discover_v the_o weakness_n and_o folly_n of_o his_o answer_n to_o that_o convince_a proof_n for_o the_o lawfulness_n of_o form_n even_o our_o saviour_n command_n for_o it_o luke_n this_o very_a prayer_n itself_o together_o with_o your_o own_o of_o the_o like_a nature_n that_o put_v up_o your_o petition_n to_o almighty_a god_n with_o a_o good_a heart_n in_o christ_n own_o word_n you_o may_v be_v sure_a to_o be_v hear_v and_o let_v any_o honest_a christian_a but_o read_n and_o compare_v these_o two_o evangelist_n together_o in_o this_o point_n and_o i_o be_o confident_a he_o will_v acknowledge_v that_o christ_n must_v needs_o intend_v this_o prayer_n of_o he_o shall_v itself_o be_v daily_o use_v and_o also_o the_o true_a standard_n of_o all_o our_o devotion_n and_o doubtless_o they_o teach_v other_o to_o use_v also_o or_o else_o they_o be_v not_o faithful_a in_o execute_v christ_n commission_n who_o at_o the_o delivery_n thereof_o speak_v thus_o mat._n 28.19.20_o go_v you_o therefore_o and_o proselyte_n all_o nation_n baptise_v they_o in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o father_n of_o the_o son_n and_o of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n teach_v they_o to_o observe_v not_o irreverent_o but_o in_o a_o grave_n and_o seemly_a manner_n take_v their_o seat_n or_o place_n without_o adoration_n or_o bow_v themselves_o towards_o one_o place_n or_o other_o but_o that_o mr._n baxter_n say_v he_o do_v in_o such_o repetition_n and_o can_v a_o good_a thing_n be_v repeat_v too_o often_o they_o say_v it_o can_v when_o they_o require_v their_o follower_n to_o attend_v the_o repetition_n of_o their_o sermon_n and_o i_o presume_v they_o dare_v not_o say_v that_o the_o very_o best_a of_o their_o discourse_n be_v so_o good_a as_o the_o lord_n prayer_n or_o that_o the_o word_n of_o uninspired_a man_n be_v equal_a to_o the_o word_n of_o jesus_n christ_n beside_o the_o lord_n prayer_n be_v deliver_v by_o the_o two_o evangelist_n with_o some_o little_a alteration_n the_o one_o recite_v the_o doxology_n the_o other_o omit_v it_o therefore_o also_o we_o repeat_v this_o prayer_n once_o with_o and_o once_o without_o it_o in_o the_o one_o end_v thus_o deliver_v we_o from_o evil_a amen_o as_o st._n luke_n chap._n 11.4_o and_o in_o the_o other_o thus_o for_o thou_o be_v the_o kingdom_n and_o the_o power_n and_o the_o glory_n for_o ever_o and_o ever_o amen_n our_o party_n to_o use_v it_o though_o i_o believe_v few_o have_v ever_o hear_v it_o from_o their_o teacher_n and_o sometime_o he_o will_v not_o permit_v the_o saint_n themselves_o to_o make_v use_n of_o it_o as_o p._n 41._o i_o tell_v you_o say_v he_o however_o hypocrite_n may_v think_v yet_o the_o christian_a that_o be_v so_o indeed_o and_o that_o sure_o must_v be_v one_o of_o the_o saint_n find_v
