form_n for_o they_o join_v in_o the_o worship_n of_o the_o temple_n and_o synagogue_n which_o consist_v in_o psalm_n as_o i_o have_v already_o show_v and_o in_o some_o certain_a form_n of_o prayer_n add_v to_o they_o and_o constant_o use_v in_o their_o daily_a service_n as_o we_o learn_v from_o those_o that_o give_v a_o account_n of_o the_o jewish_a worship_n at_o that_o time_n now_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o apostle_n be_v frequent_o present_a at_o their_o service_n both_o in_o the_o temple_n and_o synagogue_n it_o be_v manifest_a they_o approve_v their_o manner_n of_o address_v to_o the_o exclusion_n of_o the_o latter_a for_o as_o i_o shall_v show_v he_o anon_o there_o be_v strong_a presumption_n to_o the_o contrary_a and_o yet_o unless_o his_o lp._n can_v draw_v this_o inference_n from_o our_o saviour_n and_o the_o apostle_n practice_n i_o see_v little_a service_n it_o can_v do_v he_o nay_o i_o fear_v if_o the_o argument_n from_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o apostle_n practise_v herein_o be_v urge_v so_o far_o it_o will_v prove_v much_o more_o than_o those_o intend_v who_o use_n it_o for_o it_o will_v prove_v that_o we_o ought_v in_o imitation_n of_o their_o example_n to_o retain_v and_o adhere_v to_o that_o liturgy_n which_o these_o gentleman_n pretend_v the_o jew_n have_v and_o which_o they_o tell_v we_o they_o can_v yet_o produce_v the_o or_o be_v it_o whether_o our_o saviour_n have_v prescribe_v a_o stint_a liturgy_n to_o the_o christian_a church_n in_o their_o public_a administration_n or_o whether_o he_o have_v commission_v ordinary_a pastor_n to_o prescribe_v and_o impose_v such_o a_o liturgy_n and_o confine_v other_o to_o the_o use_n of_o it_o or_o whether_o he_o in_o general_n enjoin_v we_o to_o pray_v only_o by_o a_o form_n or_o not_o ordinary_o without_o one_o if_o he_o mean_v the_o first_o whether_o a_o form_n of_o prayer_n be_v lawful_a that_o be_v no_o matter_n of_o dispute_n at_o all_o between_o the_o dissenter_n and_o the_o establish_v church_n for_o as_o i_o shall_v show_v he_o anon_o there_o be_v never_o a_o meeting_n in_o which_o they_o do_v not_o use_v one_o and_o there_o be_v many_o in_o for_o this_o be_v not_o altogether_o so_o convince_a and_o solid_a as_o he_o imagine_v if_o the_o question_n be_v whether_o our_o saviour_n have_v prescribe_v a_o stint_a liturgy_n to_o the_o christian_a church_n as_o one_o will_v think_v it_o shall_v what_o signify_v his_o prescribe_v this_o single_a form_n to_o the_o proof_n of_o it_o unless_o the_o bp_o think_v our_o liturgy_n shall_v consist_v only_o of_o that_o one_o prayer_n or_o can_v produce_v more_o form_n prescribe_v by_o our_o saviour_n to_o make_v up_o a_o liturgy_n and_o if_o he_o can_v do_v that_o what_o will_v become_v never_o otherwise_o as_o one_o will_v think_v his_o follow_a word_n will_v import_v when_o he_o tell_v we_o that_o our_o saviour_n teach_n they_o be_v not_o by_o direct_v they_o to_o wait_v for_o the_o impulse_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o immediate_a inspiration_n from_o god_n of_o what_o they_o be_v to_o offer_v up_o to_o he_o we_o do_v not_o find_v he_o say_v when_o you_o pray_v speak_v liturgy_n he_o mean_v such_o prose-prayer_n as_o our_o liturgy_n consist_v of_o and_o about_o which_o we_o be_v now_o only_o concern_v to_o inquire_v for_o that_o text_n speak_v not_o one_o word_n of_o prayer_n at_o all_o but_o only_o of_o praise_n and_o if_o it_o have_v mention_v or_o include_v prayer_n it_o can_v refer_v to_o no_o other_o prayer_n but_o such_o as_o be_v sing_v which_o we_o all_o agree_v must_v be_v set_v form_n and_o these_o psalm_n prayer_n the_o bp._n know_v the_o d_o ssenter_n he_o oppose_v never_o scruple_v for_o they_o be_v useful_a to_o be_v sing_v for_o instruction_n by_o those_o who_o can_v offer_v they_o up_o as_o proper_o a_o prayer_n because_o their_o condition_n and_o circumstance_n be_v no_o way_n like_o the_o psalmist_n when_o he_o compose_v pattern_n in_o the_o h._n scripture_n and_o these_o instance_n of_o psalm-prayer_n signify_v nothing_o to_o this_o purpose_n nor_o indeed_o do_v we_o among_o all_o the_o instance_n of_o public_a prayer_n record_v after_o the_o time_n of_o the_o psalm_n be_v pen_v find_v one_o of_o these_o psalm-prayer_n use_v but_o on_o the_o contrary_a those_o that_o do_v occur_v be_v plain_o free_a and_o conceive_a prayer_n such_o as_o the_o present_a occasion_n of_o present_v they_o do_v draw_v from_o the_o devout_a mind_n of_o the_o pious_a supplicant_n of_o which_o i_o shall_v give_v some_o depend_v on_o the_o assistance_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o pray_v extempore_o and_o yet_o he_o do_v not_o i_o hope_v mean_v we_o may_v expect_v such_o immediate_a inspiration_n nay_o our_o saviour_n may_v advise_v we_o to_o free_a prayer_n without_o tell_v we_o we_o must_v speak_v what_o come_v into_o our_o mind_n or_o shall_v be_v give_v we_o in_o that_o hour_n without_o take_v think_v what_o we_o be_v to_o say_v for_o free_a prayer_n be_v so_o far_o from_o exclude_v serious_a premeditation_n that_o no_o man_n shall_v use_v it_o especial_o in_o public_a without_o it_o unless_o in_o case_n of_o absolute_a necessity_n nay_o if_o this_o reason_n signify_v any_o thing_n it_o will_v prove_v too_o much_o that_o we_o be_v never_o to_o pray_v extempore_o at_o all_o because_o we_o have_v no_o ground_n even_o in_o case_n of_o necessity_n to_o expect_v such_o immediate_a inspiration_n and_o here_o i_o will_v once_o for_o all_o caution_n his_o lp._n against_o that_o common_a mistake_n he_o seem_v to_o run_v into_o as_o if_o we_o imagine_v the_o assistance_n of_o the_o h._n spirit_n in_o prayer_n to_o lie_v in_o immediate_o dictate_v our_o word_n to_o we_o whereas_o we_o no_o more_o expect_v that_o in_o prayer_n than_o in_o preach_v for_o we_o suppose_v this_o gift_n of_o prayer_n to_o be_v a_o common_a gift_n and_o though_o we_o have_v know_v many_o private_a christian_n who_o natural_a part_n in_o all_o other_o thing_n be_v but_o weak_a and_o low_a endue_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n with_o a_o considerable_a measure_n of_o this_o gift_n as_o the_o fruit_n and_o reward_n of_o their_o diligence_n in_o this_o duty_n yet_o we_o doubt_v not_o that_o many_o natural_a endowment_n as_o readiness_n of_o apprehension_n copiousness_n of_o fancy_n tenderness_n of_o affection_n fluency_n of_o expression_n may_v contribute_v much_o to_o dispose_v a_o man_n for_o great_a eminency_n in_o it_o nor_o do_v we_o think_v the_o assistance_n of_o the_o h._n spirit_n in_o this_o duty_n alter_v that_o style_n or_o way_n of_o expression_n that_o nature_n or_o custom_n have_v habituate_v man_n to_o so_o that_o the_o h._n spirit_n be_v no_o more_o accountable_a for_o the_o indecent_a expression_n of_o good_a man_n in_o prayer_n than_o in_o preach_v though_o we_o may_v expect_v his_o help_n both_o in_o our_o endeavour_n to_o acquire_v ability_n and_o gift_n for_o these_o duty_n and_o in_o the_o exercise_n of_o '_o they_o but_o before_o i_o dismiss_v what_o he_o have_v say_v in_o reference_n to_o this_o prayer_n of_o our_o lord_n i_o shall_v subjoin_v the_o follow_a remark_n thereon_o 1._o if_o it_o shouâ—â—_n bâ—_n grant_v that_o our_o saviour_n give_v this_o as_o a_o form_n of_o prayer_n to_o his_o disciple_n and_o intend_v it_o for_o the_o perpetual_a use_n the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n be_v at_o hand_n and_o to_o the_o expectation_n the_o pious_a jew_n then_o general_o entertain_v of_o the_o messiah_n kingdom_n be_v public_o set_v up_o in_o the_o world_n they_o observe_v far_o that_o in_o the_o petition_n for_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o mention_n make_v of_o the_o sacrifice_n the_o death_n or_o blood_n of_o christ_n in_o virtue_n whereof_o we_o must_v now_o sue_v for_o pardon_n whereas_o our_o saviour_n after_o his_o resurrection_n and_o ascension_n be_v every_o where_o propose_v as_o our_o highpriest_n mediator_n intercessor_n and_o advocate_n of_o which_o there_o be_v no_o notice_n take_v in_o this_o form_n and_o hence_o they_o suppose_v that_o it_o be_v on_o this_o account_n that_o our_o lord_n long_o after_o the_o delivery_n of_o this_o form_n tell_v his_o disciple_n 16_o joh._n 24._o hitherto_o have_v you_o ask_v nothing_o in_o my_o name_n and_o therefore_o he_o require_v they_o now_o to_o ask_v the_o father_n in_o his_o name_n and_o assure_v they_o he_o will_v grant_v their_o petition_n and_o according_o they_o observe_v that_o the_o doxologys_n mention_v in_o scripture_n after_o our_o saviour_n ascension_n lead_v we_o direct_o and_o express_o to_o ascribe_v our_o praise_n to_o god_n by_o christ_n or_o in_o his_o name_n of_o which_o there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o hint_n in_o that_o use_v in_o the_o ld's-prayer_n whence_o they_o conclude_v it_o to_o be_v chief_o suit_v to_o the_o state_n of_o the_o disciple_n of_o christ_n while_o under_o his_o personal_a ministry_n on_o earth_n in_o which_o the_o principal_a mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o depend_v on_o his_o death_n resurrection_n and_o ascension_n be_v not_o yet_o so_o clear_o reveal_v and_o the_o more_o some_o labour_n to_o prove_v these_o petition_n take_v out_o of_o some_o jewish_a form_n the_o more_o do_v they_o strengthen_v this_o opinion_n that_o this_o form_n be_v no_o far_o intend_v for_o our_o â—â—se_n than_o as_o a_o pattern_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o thing_n pray_v for_o but_o be_v â—ot_n so_o much_o as_o to_o be_v a_o pattern_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o pray_v in_o which_o respect_n it_o be_v most_o reasonable_a to_o suppose_v our_o manner_n â—f_o pray_v shall_v great_o differ_v from_o that_o of_o the_o jew_n particular_o by_o be_v offer_v up_o in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n i_o do_v not_o give_v this_o opinion_n as_o my_o own_o but_o propose_v it_o to_o his_o lp_n consideration_n to_o allay_v that_o confidence_n wherewith_o he_o assert_v so_o positive_o our_o obligation_n to_o the_o constant_a use_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n for_o which_o i_o do_v not_o see_v any_o thing_n so_o plausible_a and_o probable_a produce_v â—y_a he_o as_o the_o author_n of_o this_o opinion_n allege_v in_o favour_n of_o it_o for_o â—e_n tell_v we_o without_o any_o limitation_n that_o we_o be_v particular_o command_a whenever_o we_o pray_v to_o use_v this_o prayer_n for_o which_o assertion_n i_o can_v â—ee_n no_o show_n of_o proof_n nor_o can_v i_o reconcile_v it_o to_o those_o many_o instanâ—es_n of_o prayer_n record_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n in_o none_o of_o which_o do_v we_o read_v of_o this_o be_v use_v nay_o i_o do_v not_o think_v his_o lp._n or_o any_o man_n else_o suppose_v himself_o oblige_v to_o use_v the_o lord_n prayer_n always_o â—e_v pray_v whenever_o we_o crave_v a_o blessing_n on_o our_o food_n but_o do_v his_o lp._n always_o use_v the_o lord_n prayer_n on_o that_o occasion_n so_o that_o we_o must_v be_v cautious_a of_o stretch_v our_o saviour_n word_n too_o far_o for_o if_o we_o shall_v take_v they_o in_o their_o most_o strict_a sense_n we_o shall_v never_o offer_v up_o any_o other_o prayer_n but_o that_o at_o all_o 3._o the_o compiler_n of_o the_o directory_n seem_v to_o give_v the_o most_o fair_a and_o just_a account_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n viz._n that_o it_o be_v chief_o design_v as_o a_o perfect_a pattern_n but_o may_v also_o be_v convenient_o use_v as_o a_o form_n of_o prayer_n that_o it_o be_v a_o perfect_a pattern_n his_o lp-will_a not_o deny_v and_o the_o admirable_a method_n and_o order_n as_o well_o as_o the_o comprehensiveness_n of_o its_o petition_n show_v it_o be_v so_o as_o to_o the_o matter_n
of_o prayer_n and_o the_o word_n of_o our_o lord_n seem_v to_o recommend_v it_o also_o as_o a_o fit_a compendium_n and_o summary_n of_o our_o desire_n though_o that_o it_o be_v so_o strict_o intend_v for_o a_o form_n as_o that_o all_o alteration_n of_o the_o word_n in_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o dangerous_a as_o the_o bp._n suggest_v i_o do_v not_o see_v and_o it_o be_v strange_a he_o shall_v no_o better_o ward_v off_o the_o common_a objection_n against_o this_o conceit_n viz._n that_o the_o word_n of_o the_o prayer_n be_v not_o the_o same_o in_o the_o 2_o evangelist_n for_o though_o we_o shall_v allow_v he_o that_o trespass_n and_o debt_n be_v the_o same_o in_o the_o syriack_n yet_o sure_o he_o can_v be_v ignorant_a that_o not_o only_o be_v the_o word_n different_a in_o the_o four_o petition_n but_o what_o be_v more_o material_a the_o doxology_n be_v leave_v out_o in_o the_o evangelist_n luke_n where_o our_o saviour_n word_n seem_v more_o express_a for_o the_o use_n of_o this_o prayer_n nay_o it_o be_v pleasant_a that_o his_o lp._n shall_v to_o aggravate_v the_o danger_n of_o alter_v the_o word_n compare_v it_o to_o the_o danger_n of_o alter_v those_o of_o our_o creed_n p._n much_o more_o how_o it_o shall_v prove_v his_o recommend_v such_o form_n to_o we_o with_o his_o die_a breath_n etc._n etc._n as_o if_o a_o man_n may_v not_o in_o a_o free_a prayer_n choose_v out_o and_o apply_v some_o scriptural_a expression_n to_o his_o own_o case_n indeed_o the_o word_n he_o quote_v be_v not_o proper_o a_o prayer_n at_o all_o and_o if_o they_o be_v look_v altogether_o as_o extempore-prayer_n with_o his_o die_a breath_n etc._n etc._n ii_o the_o bp._n have_v not_o produce_v the_o least_o evidence_n of_o christ_n enjoin_v or_o recommend_v to_o christian_a church_n the_o use_n of_o stint_a liturgys_n even_o as_o to_o the_o ordinary_a public_a prayer_n which_o they_o be_v to_o offer_v up_o so_o that_o though_o the_o same_o matter_n of_o prayer_n constant_o occur_v in_o that_o duty_n when_o public_o offer_v especial_o in_o the_o celebration_n of_o baptism_n and_o the_o ld's-supper_n yet_o neither_o do_v our_o saviour_n nor_o his_o apostle_n prescribe_v any_o state_v form_n for_o '_o they_o whereas_o if_o our_o lord_n have_v judge_v they_o so_o necessary_a or_o so_o high_o useful_a as_o some_o pretend_v nothing_o can_v have_v be_v more_o conducive_a to_o have_v not_o this_o plain_o imply_v that_o they_o take_v not_o such_o a_o impose_v liturgy_n to_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o church_n edification_n and_o peace_n but_o rather_o suppose_v that_o the_o ordinary_a occasion_n of_o public_a prayer_n be_v too_o various_a and_o different_a to_o be_v confine_v to_o such_o set_v and_o prescribe_v form_n if_o it_o be_v pretend_v there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o their_o prescribe_v such_o form_n when_o the_o jewish_a liturgy_n be_v still_o extant_a and_o use_v i_o answer_v that_o not_o to_o repeat_v what_o have_v be_v object_v against_o the_o be_v the_o great_a reason_n why_o they_o shall_v have_v substitute_v one_o in_o the_o room_n of_o the_o jewish_a in_o the_o church_n they_o settle_v since_o than_o they_o no_o way_n so_o much_o as_o recommend_v such_o a_o liturgy_n but_o leave_v even_o ordinary_a pastor_n to_o the_o free_a exercise_n of_o their_o own_o ability_n in_o prayer_n as_o well_o as_o in_o other_o part_n of_o their_o public_a ministration_n we_o may_v with_o great_a probability_n infer_v that_o they_o judge_v it_o more_o conducive_a to_o edification_n that_o the_o pastor_n of_o church_n shall_v use_v those_o ordinary_a gift_n wherewith_o they_o be_v furnish_v for_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o duty_n without_o be_v tie_v up_o to_o any_o sett-form_n and_o according_o those_o that_o have_v be_v most_o god_n and_o that_o therefore_o form_n of_o prayer_n be_v of_o no_o necessary_a use_n either_o in_o public_a or_o private_a on_o the_o contrary_a that_o they_o stint_v the_o spirit_n and_o hinder_v god_n for_o enable_v their_o heart_n to_o conceive_v and_o their_o tongue_n to_o express_v convenient_a desire_n for_o their_o family_n now_o if_o these_o be_v the_o word_n his_o lp._n refer_v to_o i_o will_v desire_v he_o to_o consider_v a_o little_a better_o how_o he_o can_v deduce_v this_o principle_n out_o of_o they_o viz._n that_o the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n be_v give_v to_o all_o the_o child_n of_o god_n in_o some_o measure_n for_o enable_v their_o heart_n to_o conceive_v and_o their_o tongue_n to_o express_v convenient_a desire_n to_o god_n and_o as_o his_o lp._n add_v p._n 53._o without_o a_o form_n for_o the_o bp._n hereby_o suppose_v that_o this_o assembly_n think_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n be_v the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n and_o that_o this_o gift_n be_v in_o conceive_a prayer_n and_o do_v they_o not_o suppose_v the_o latter_a to_o be_v at_o present_a destitute_a of_o that_o gift_n and_o as_o bp._n wilkins_n express_v it_o to_o need_v form_n as_o impotent_a people_n do_v crutch_n they_o do_v indeed_o say_v the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n i._n e._n a_o devout_a and_o pray_a disposition_n be_v give_v in_o some_o measure_n to_o all_o the_o child_n of_o god_n but_o they_o do_v not_o suppose_v therefore_o that_o all_o who_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n have_v the_o gift_n also_o but_o the_o quite_o contrary_a all_o that_o their_o word_n can_v be_v reasonable_o extend_v to_o import_v be_v that_o whereas_o there_o be_v manifold_a daily_a necessity_n of_o christian_a family_n which_o prescribe_a form_n can_v suit_v it_o be_v a_o great_a infelicity_n to_o be_v unable_a to_o express_v our_o desire_n to_o god_n in_o those_o case_n and_o therefore_o such_o as_o labour_v under_o that_o impotency_n shall_v be_v earnest_a to_o beg_v of_o god_n such_o a_o ability_n and_o gift_n so_o far_o as_o it_o be_v necessary_a for_o their_o due_a discharge_n of_o this_o duty_n to_o the_o edification_n and_o comfort_n of_o their_o family_n that_o they_o ought_v in_o order_n to_o the_o attainment_n of_o it_o to_o cherish_v the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n i._n e._n those_o devout_a desire_n and_o affection_n which_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n communicate_v in_o some_o measure_n to_o all_o his_o child_n according_a to_o their_o various_a necessity_n and_o which_o can_v but_o be_v great_o hinder_v and_o dampt_v when_o our_o inability_n confine_v we_o whole_o to_o the_o use_n of_o form_n which_o can_v suit_v the_o particular_a condition_n of_o ourselves_o and_o family_n and_o they_o suppose_v that_o such_o a_o ability_n to_o pray_v suitable_o to_o our_o particular_a necessity_n be_v one_o of_o the_o ordinary_a gift_n of_o the_o h._n spirit_n which_o private_a christian_n shall_v beg_v of_o god_n and_o have_v encouragement_n to_o hope_v for_o so_o far_o as_o it_o be_v necessary_a to_o their_o compliance_n with_o his_o general_a command_n of_o make_v know_v their_o request_n to_o he_o in_o every_o thing_n in_o the_o diligent_a use_n of_o such_o help_n as_o they_o be_v furnish_v with_o and_o frequent_a exercise_v themselves_o in_o this_o excellent_a duty_n their_o word_n also_o do_v imply_v that_o the_o more_o we_o grow_v in_o a_o devout_a and_o pray_a disposition_n the_o more_o easy_o may_v we_o attain_v some_o measure_n of_o that_o gift_n since_o out_o of_o the_o abundance_n of_o the_o heart_n the_o mouth_n speak_v and_o the_o more_o we_o feel_v our_o own_o spiritual_a necessity_n the_o more_o easy_o do_v the_o pinch_a sense_n of_o they_o supply_v we_o with_o expression_n and_o argument_n in_o plead_v with_o 3_o succeed_a age_n and_o consequent_o there_o be_v great_a reason_n to_o conclude_v they_o use_v free_a prayer_n or_o pray_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o their_o ability_n and_o gift_n so_o that_o we_o have_v far_o more_o probable_a ground_n to_o conclude_v prescribe_v liturgy_n of_o human_a composure_n destitute_a of_o scriptural_a precept_n and_o example_n and_o if_o his_o lp._n will_v on_o that_o account_n censure_v they_o as_o a_o human_a invention_n and_o a_o piece_n of_o vain_a worship_n he_o may_v use_v his_o liberty_n for_o i_o shall_v satisfy_v myself_o with_o defend_v our_o own_o practice_n without_o such_o harsh_a reflection_n of_o that_o of_o other_o p._n 50._o his_o lp._n assert_n without_o the_o least_o proof_n that_o moses_n david_n and_o our_o saviour_n use_v form_n of_o far_o from_o do_v whatever_o other_o may_v have_v do_v who_o so_o uncharitable_o unchurch_n they_o for_o want_v of_o prelatical_a ordination_n i_o have_v already_o tell_v he_o that_o the_o directory_n influence_n to_o hinder_v secret_a devotion_n for_o in_o free-prayer_n a_o man_n need_v not_o express_v his_o desire_n in_o word_n at_o all_o and_o therefore_o need_v not_o forbear_v pray_v for_o will_v endeavour_v to_o preserve_v this_o unity_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o bond_n of_o peace_n by_o mutual_a forbearance_n as_o to_o that_o diversity_n of_o external_a rite_n and_o mode_n about_o which_o it_o can_v be_v expect_v but_o that_o the_o different_a apprehension_n of_o pious_a man_n will_v occasion_v diversity_n in_o their_o practice_n especial_o where_o any_o unnecessary_a covernour_n and_o of_o the_o first_o reformer_n who_o all_o do_v settle_v liturgys_n in_o the_o church_n which_o they_o reform_v this_o knox_n do_v in_o scotland_n who_o liturgy_n we_o have_v ready_a
