very_o strange_a that_o have_v the_o institution_n be_v temporary_a the_o church_n of_o christ_n for_o fifteen_o hundred_o year_n shall_v never_o be_v wise_a enough_o to_o discover_v it_o and_o it_o seem_v to_o i_o a_o very_a high_a presumption_n for_o we_o to_o determine_v against_o the_o constant_a belief_n and_o practice_n of_o the_o church_n in_o all_o age_n without_o the_o least_o warrant_v of_o man_n composure_n ought_v not_o and_o that_o we_o may_v as_o well_o appoint_v new_a scripture_n for_o public_a instruction_n because_o the_o inspire_a person_n do_v so_o as_o we_o may_v appoint_v new_a form_n for_o public_a worship_n because_o they_o do_v so_o but_o this_o objection_n also_o will_v be_v of_o no_o force_n if_o we_o consider_v four_o thing_n 1._o that_o this_o objection_n allow_v the_o prescribe_v of_o form_n to_o be_v lawful_a in_o its_o own_o nature_n for_o otherwise_o god_n must_v have_v do_v that_o which_o be_v unlawful_a in_o its_o own_o nature_n nay_o our_o saviour_n prescribe_v his_o form_n be_v a_o tacit_n approbation_n of_o other_o form_n that_o be_v prescribe_v before_o and_o that_o not_o only_o by_o god_n but_o by_o man_n too_o for_o the_o jew_n otherwise_o god_n who_o always_o act_v for_o wise_a end_n and_o use_v the_o most_o proper_a mean_n will_v never_o have_v prescribe_v any_o form_n and_o certain_o what_o be_v once_o useful_a be_v useful_a still_o for_o 1._o we_o be_v now_o dull_a and_o carnal_a enough_o to_o need_v form_n and_o 2._o our_o saviour_n have_v prescribe_v one_o to_o be_v use_v in_o all_o age_n which_o he_o will_v other_o when_o they_o judge_v they_o useful_a ii_o therefore_o i_o be_o to_o prove_v that_o though_o no_o form_n be_v prescribe_v yet_o form_n be_v as_o lawful_a as_o conceive_v or_o extempore_o judge_v whether_o be_v busy_v about_o the_o matter_n method_n and_o expression_n of_o prayer_n do_v not_o much_o more_o employ_v the_o minister_n soul_n than_o bare_a read_n that_o be_v whether_o he_o that_o can_v read_v a_o prayer_n without_o the_o least_o trouble_n can_v read_v a_o prayer_n more_o easy_o than_o invent_v one_o however_o they_o tell_v we_o that_o pray_v always_o in_o the_o same_o word_n do_v cloy_v the_o attention_n of_o the_o people_n whereas_o the_o newness_n and_o variety_n of_o conceive_a prayer_n do_v natural_o awaken_v their_o mind_n and_o keep_v they_o more_o sixth_o those_o that_o be_v fix_v upon_o it_o as_o worldly_a business_n that_o seem_a devotion_n that_o be_v raise_v by_o the_o jingle_n of_o word_n be_v not_o devotion_n but_o mechanism_n for_o a_o man_n may_v be_v strange_o affect_v with_o the_o word_n of_o prayer_n who_o have_v not_o the_o least_o spark_n of_o true_a devotion_n to_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o but_o if_o the_o mind_n do_v affect_v the_o matter_n of_o prayer_n for_o itself_o and_o not_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o the_o word_n i_o can_v imagine_v how_o new_a word_n shall_v any_o way_n advantage_n its_o devotion_n unless_o they_o be_v to_o express_v new_a matter_n thus_o it_o appear_v that_o even_o what_o be_v urge_v in_o behalf_n of_o extempore_o prayer_n do_v plead_v much_o more_o for_o form_n but_o then_o there_o be_v sundry_a advantage_n peculiar_a to_o form_n which_o extempore_o prayer_n can_v pretend_v to_o for_o 1._o people_n may_v consider_v the_o matter_n of_o a_o form_n and_o endeavour_v to_o affect_v their_o mind_n with_o it_o before_o hand_n and_o so_o they_o may_v pray_v with_o great_a preparation_n 2._o people_n may_v join_v in_o a_o form_n with_o more_o understanding_n than_o in_o a_o extempore_o prayer_n wherein_o the_o minister_n be_v force_v to_o use_v such_o expression_n as_o come_v first_o to_o hand_n and_o sometime_o he_o be_v force_v to_o use_v a_o hard_a word_n which_o half_o of_o the_o congregation_n do_v not_o know_v because_o a_o easy_a do_v not_o come_v to_o his_o mind_n beside_o many_o other_o inconvenience_n which_o it_o be_v impossible_a always_o to_o avoid_v now_o in_o compose_v public_a form_n more_o care_n will_v be_v take_v that_o the_o word_n may_v be_v intelligible_a than_o there_o can_v be_v in_o extempore_o prayer_n and_o true_o if_o the_o word_n be_v not_o intelligible_a the_o people_n prayer_n must_v be_v as_o much_o interrupt_v as_o if_o the_o minister_n speak_v in_o a_o unknown_a tongue_n 3._o man_n may_v join_v in_o a_o form_n with_o much_o more_o faith_n and_o hope_v of_o be_v hear_v than_o they_o can_v in_o extempore_o prayer_n for_o they_o may_v be_v satisfy_v before_o hand_n that_o the_o matter_n of_o a_o form_n be_v good_a but_o they_o can_v be_v so_o satisfy_v of_o a_o extempore_o prayer_n consider_v that_o the_o minister_n be_v many_o time_n a_o stranger_n and_o may_v be_v perhaps_o erroneous_a rash_a ignorant_n etc._n etc._n and_o even_o those_o minister_n
who_o they_o know_v may_v sometime_o mistake_v their_o passion_n for_o their_o zeal_n and_o wreak_v their_o anger_n or_o their_o faction_n in_o their_o prayer_n or_o let_v drop_v a_o error_n before_o they_o be_v aware_a or_o express_v themselves_o so_o as_o a_o honest_a mind_n may_v not_o be_v able_a to_o join_v so_o that_o in_o join_v with_o a_o extempore_o prayer_n a_o man_n must_v judge_v what_o be_v say_v before_o he_o can_v consent_v to_o it_o and_o if_o he_o meet_v with_o a_o rub_n the_o minister_n go_v on_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n and_o the_o man_n be_v leave_v behind_o at_o a_o loss_n and_o perhaps_o confound_v before_o he_o can_v join_v again_o and_o no_o soon_o perhaps_o be_v he_o well_o fix_v but_o he_o be_v trouble_v again_o with_o the_o same_o inconveniency_n all_o which_o be_v easy_o prevent_v by_o the_o use_n of_o form_n 4._o form_n do_v not_o divert_v the_o affection_n of_o the_o people_n from_o the_o matter_n of_o prayer_n as_o extempore_o prayer_n do_v which_o disturb_v devotion_n whenever_o the_o minister_n hesitate_v or_o blunder_n or_o express_v himself_o improper_o for_o then_o some_o will_v be_v pity_v other_o contemn_v other_o carp_n etc._n etc._n and_o if_o he_o perform_v well_o some_o will_v admire_v his_o phrase_n judgement_n readiness_n etc._n etc._n all_o which_o thing_n do_v call_v off_o their_o mind_n from_o the_o matter_n 5._o the_o decency_n and_o solemnity_n of_o public_a worship_n which_o thing_n be_v high_o advantageous_a to_o the_o devotion_n of_o the_o people_n be_v better_o secure_v by_o form_n than_o by_o extempore_o prayer_n where_o they_o depend_v whole_o upon_o the_o minister_n for_o if_o he_o happen_v to_o be_v a_o man_n of_o a_o bad_a memory_n or_o apt_a to_o blunder_v or_o be_v dull_a etc._n etc._n then_o the_o devotion_n of_o the_o congregation_n may_v be_v turn_v into_o scorn_n and_o laughter_n and_o of_o this_o i_o have_v see_v too_o many_o sad_a experiment_n but_o suppose_v he_o to_o be_v a_o able_a and_o pious_a person_n yet_o he_o may_v be_v liable_a to_o indisposition_n of_o body_n dulness_n inadvertency_n etc._n etc._n with_o outward_a care_n and_o accident_n and_o if_o he_o be_v he_o must_v many_o time_n pray_v confuse_o or_o with_o break_a indecent_a expression_n and_o omit_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o the_o matter_n sometime_o he_o will_v be_v at_o a_o loss_n and_o be_v force_v to_o use_v fulsome_a repetition_n and_o how_o be_v it_o possible_a almost_o but_o that_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o flat_a and_o empty_a nonsense_n undigested_a conception_n and_o unadvised_a expression_n shall_v escape_v from_o his_o lip_n before_o he_o be_v aware_a and_o this_o if_o he_o have_v a_o grain_n of_o modesty_n must_v put_v he_o into_o great_a confusion_n and_o so_o amaze_v he_o that_o he_o will_v be_v hardly_o able_a to_o recover_v himself_o now_o be_v it_o not_o a_o hard_a case_n that_o the_o devotion_n of_o five_o hundred_o or_o a_o thousand_o person_n must_v be_v that_o move_v they_o whereas_o a_o man_n that_o be_v tickle_v with_o the_o word_n of_o a_o extempore_o prayer_n may_v fancy_v himself_o to_o be_v very_o devout_a when_o he_o have_v nothing_o of_o true_a devotion_n in_o he_o i_o may_v add_v more_o but_o i_o think_v these_o thing_n be_v enough_o to_o convince_v a_o unprejudiced_a person_n that_o form_n of_o prayer_n be_v so_o far_o from_o hinder_v that_o they_o very_o much_o help_v devotion_n but_o if_o any_o man_n shall_v still_o object_v that_o he_o find_v by_o experience_n that_o form_n do_v actual_o deaden_v his_o devotion_n because_o his_o affection_n be_v flat_a and_o heavy_a when_o he_o use_v they_o but_o he_o be_v almost_o transport_v when_o he_o hear_v a_o man_n pray_v extempore_o i_o beseech_v he_o to_o consider_v whether_o his_o experience_n be_v not_o found_v in_o prejudice_n and_o whether_o his_o prejudice_n ought_v to_o prescribe_v to_o the_o whole_a church_n it_o be_v certain_a other_o man_n find_v by_o experience_n that_o join_v with_o a_o form_n do_v help_v their_o devotion_n so_o that_o here_o be_v experience_n against_o experience_n now_o since_o two_o contrary_a experience_n can_v proceed_v from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n therefore_o one_o must_v proceed_v from_o the_o temper_n of_o the_o man._n now_o i_o have_v prove_v and_o many_o man_n find_v by_o experience_n that_o form_n do_v help_v devotion_n and_o therefore_o if_o he_o do_v not_o find_v the_o same_o the_o fault_n must_v be_v in_o himself_o and_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o if_o he_o will_v consider_v the_o matter_n impartial_o he_o will_v soon_o be_v of_o the_o same_o opinion_n for_o we_o have_v scripture_n and_o reason_n on_o our_o side_n but_o he_o be_v lead_v by_o his_o passion_n which_o may_v be_v charm_v and_o flatter_v and_o will_v betray_v he_o into_o strong_a delusion_n it_o be_v plain_a it_o be_v not_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o extempore_o prayer_n that_o affect_v he_o for_o that_o be_v the_o same_o as_o in_o a_o form_n and_o if_o he_o be_v take_v with_o the_o chime_a of_o word_n it_o be_v but_o a_o sensitive_a delight_n and_o he_o must_v not_o make_v a_o division_n in_o the_o church_n only_o to_o gratify_v his_o fancy_n beside_o i_o desire_v he_o strict_o to_o examine_v his_o conscience_n whether_o he_o have_v not_o often_o be_v as_o dull_a at_o a_o conceive_a prayer_n as_o at_o the_o public_a form_n if_o so_o than_o the_o person_n be_v to_o be_v blame_v and_o not_o the_o form_n and_o he_o be_v guilty_a of_o a_o double_a iniquity_n who_o divide_v the_o church_n without_o certain_a that_o not_o only_o the_o matter_n but_o the_o very_a language_n of_o their_o prayer_n be_v immediate_o inspire_a this_o gift_n be_v peculiar_a to_o the_o primitive_a age_n of_o christianity_n because_o the_o design_n of_o it_o be_v not_o only_o to_o enable_v the_o first_o planter_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o perform_v their_o office_n in_o the_o language_n of_o the_o several_a nation_n they_o be_v send_v to_o but_o also_o to_o be_v a_o sign_n from_o god_n as_o other_o miracle_n be_v for_o the_o confirmation_n of_o the_o gospel_n tongue_n be_v for_o a_o sign_n to_o they_o such_o inspiration_n for_o all_o good_a christian_n have_v a_o right_n to_o the_o blessing_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n and_o i_o be_o very_o confident_a it_o will_v be_v look_v upon_o by_o all_o sober_a dissenter_n as_o a_o very_a rash_a and_o unjust_a censure_n to_o affirm_v that_o a_o man_n can_v be_v a_o good_a christian_a who_o do_v not_o pray_v by_o immediate_a inspiration_n but_o be_v always_o fain_o to_o depend_v either_o on_o his_o own_o invention_n or_o a_o form_n 2._o that_o as_o there_o be_v no_o promise_n so_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o any_o such_o immediate_a inspiration_n it_o be_v true_a the_o spirit_n will_v assist_v we_o in_o all_o necessary_a thing_n wherein_o our_o duty_n and_o spiritual_a life_n be_v concern_v but_o it_o be_v a_o unwarrantable_a presumption_n to_o expect_v a_o immediate_a inspiration_n in_o prayer_n because_o there_o be_v no_o necessity_n of_o it_o for_o 1._o as_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o our_o prayer_n the_o holy_a spirit_n have_v already_o sufficient_o reveal_v it_o to_o we_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o as_o plain_o instruct_v we_o what_o we_o be_v to_o pray_v for_o as_o he_o can_v be_v suppose_v to_o do_v by_o any_o immediate_a inspiration_n and_o therefore_o to_o suppose_v after_o all_o a_o necessity_n of_o immediate_a inspiration_n be_v in_o effect_n to_o suppose_v that_o we_o have_v neither_o reason_n enough_o to_o understand_v the_o sense_n of_o plain_a word_n nor_o memory_n enough_o to_o retain_v it_o but_o say_v the_o dissenter_n we_o know_v not_o what_o to_o pray_v for_o as_o we_o ought_v but_o the_o spirit_n itself_o make_v intercession_n for_o we_o with_o groan_n which_o can_v be_v utter_v rom._n 8.26_o and_o therefore_o we_o can_v in_o all_o case_n know_v the_o matter_n of_o our_o prayer_n without_o immediate_a inspiration_n but_o i_o answer_v that_o the_o word_n relate_v not_o to_o the_o matter_n but_o to_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o prayer_n what_o to_o pray_v for_o as_o we_o ought_v we_o know_v not_o that_o be_v we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o pray_v with_o that_o fervency_n and_o resignation_n which_o we_o ought_v unless_o the_o spirit_n assist_v we_o 2._o as_o for_o the_o word_n of_o prayer_n there_o be_v no_o necessity_n they_o shall_v be_v immediate_o dictate_v to_o we_o since_o we_o may_v use_v form_n and_o those_o form_n with_o small_a addition_n may_v be_v adapt_v to_o it_o be_v divine_a or_o natural_a or_o diabolical_a for_o 1._o it_o be_v certain_a a_o man_n may_v pray_v agreeable_o to_o scripture_n by_o natural_a inspiration_n that_o be_v by_o a_o natural_a or_o accidental_a fervency_n of_o temper_n as_o may_v be_v prove_v by_o many_o instance_n and_o in_o this_o case_n how_o shall_v he_o know_v by_o scripture_n whether_o his_o present_a inspiration_n be_v natural_a or_o divine_a it_o will_v be_v say_v perhaps_o that_o god_n inspire_v good_a man_n with_o fervency_n in_o prayer_n and_o yet_o this_o fervency_n sometime_o proceed_v from_o temper_n of_o body_n and_o why_o do_v not_o the_o want_n of_o a_o sign_n to_o distinguish_v conclude_v against_o the_o inspiration_n of_o fervency_n as_o well_o as_o against_o the_o inspiration_n of_o the_o matter_n and_o word_n of_o prayer_n i_o answer_v that_o we_o have_v a_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v assistance_n for_o the_o fervency_n of_o our_o prayer_n but_o not_o for_o the_o matter_n or_o word_n of_o they_o beside_o we_o may_v easy_o distinguish_v whether_o the_o inspiration_n of_o fervency_n be_v natural_a or_o divine_a by_o our_o own_o sense_n if_o it_o be_v accompany_v with_o a_o fix_a and_o constant_a devotion_n of_o soul_n it_o be_v divine_a but_o if_o it_o be_v only_o a_o sudden_a fit_a and_o leave_v we_o habitual_o indevout_a we_o have_v just_a reason_n to_o think_v it_o natural_a but_o we_o can_v distinguish_v by_o scripture_n between_o one_o and_o the_o other_o for_o both_o may_v be_v agreeable_a to_o scripture_n and_o can_v it_o be_v imagine_v that_o have_v god_n mean_v to_o continue_v the_o gift_n of_o inspiration_n to_o we_o he_o will_v have_v leave_v we_o thus_o in_o the_o dark_a concern_v it_o without_o any_o certain_a sign_n to_o distinguish_v whether_o it_o be_v from_o his_o spirit_n or_o from_o a_o ill-affected_a spleen_n or_o a_o fever_n 2._o as_o for_o diabolical_a inspiration_n we_o have_v sundry_a instance_n such_o as_o wier_n hacket_n d._n george_n and_o john_n basilides_n duke_n of_o russia_n who_o have_v such_o gift_n of_o prayer_n as_o ravish_v the_o auditor_n and_o in_o the_o opinion_n of_o the_o most_o impartial_a seem_v to_o exceed_v the_o power_n of_o nature_n and_o make_v many_o think_v they_o immediate_o inspire_a by_o god_n now_o since_o by_o such_o inspiration_n the_o devil_n may_v sometime_o serve_v his_o own_o end_n by_o recommend_v false_a teacher_n etc._n etc._n we_o may_v reasonable_o suppose_v he_o do_v use_v that_o method_n and_o since_o he_o may_v inspire_v man_n with_o such_o matter_n of_o prayer_n there_o be_v no_o sign_n we_o have_v all_o the_o reason_n in_o the_o world_n to_o think_v the_o gift_n be_v cease_v but_o far_o we_o have_v not_o only_o no_o certain_a sign_n of_o the_o divine_a inspiration_n of_o conceive_a prayer_n but_o many_o very_a certain_a one_o of_o the_o contrary_a i_o will_v instance_n in_o four_o 1._o the_o great_a impertinence_n nonsense_n and_o rudeness_n to_o say_v no_o worse_o that_o be_v sometime_o mingle_v with_o these_o extempore_o prayer_n and_o which_o we_o can_v attribute_v to_o the_o holy_a ghost_n without_o blasphemy_n 2._o that_o they_o be_v so_o general_o tincture_v with_o the_o particular_a opinion_n of_o those_o that_o offer_v they_o whether_o this_o be_v not_o so_o i_o appeal_v to_o all_o the_o world_n and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o then_o sure_o they_o be_v not_o inspire_a for_o either_o we_o must_v suppose_v this_o gift_n of_o inspiration_n to_o be_v consign_v to_o one_o party_n which_o will_v be_v to_o stint_v the_o spirit_n with_o a_o witness_n or_o else_o we_o must_v blasphemous_o say_v the_o spirit_n inspire_v contradiction_n and_o indite_v contrary_a prayer_n to_o man_n of_o opposite_a party_n 3._o another_o plain_a sign_n that_o conceive_v prayer_n be_v not_o inspire_a be_v that_o that_o which_o give_v they_o the_o reputation_n of_o be_v so_o be_v not_o so_o much_o the_o matter_n as_o the_o manner_n of_o express_v they_o as_o for_o the_o matter_n i_o suppose_v the_o dissenter_n will_v not_o deny_v but_o our_o form_n may_v equal_v at_o least_o if_o not_o excel_v their_o conceive_a prayer_n and_o therefore_o all_o the_o
difference_n must_v be_v in_o the_o manner_n but_o be_v conceive_v prayer_n the_o more_o inspire_a because_o the_o word_n be_v extempore_o do_v god_n continue_v the_o gift_n for_o no_o other_o end_n but_o that_o man_n may_v ask_v those_o thing_n extempore_o which_o they_o may_v as_o well_o have_v ask_v in_o a_o form_n or_o be_v they_o more_o inspire_a because_o they_o do_v general_o more_o enlarge_v and_o express_v the_o same_o matter_n over_o again_o in_o different_a word_n be_v the_o spirit_n continue_v only_o to_o vary_v phrase_n our_o saviour_n forbid_v we_o to_o use_v vain_a repetition_n or_o as_o munster_n hebrew_a read_v it_o to_o multiply_v word_n above_o what_o be_v fit_a and_o seasonable_a think_v we_o shall_v be_v hear_v for_o our_o much_o speak_n and_o therefore_o these_o enlargement_n be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v sign_n of_o their_o immediate_a inspiration_n that_o suppose_v the_o spirit_n to_o be_v of_o the_o same_o mind_n with_o christ_n they_o be_v general_o sign_n of_o the_o contrary_n 4._o that_o extraordinary_a manner_n and_o way_n of_o express_v they_o for_o which_o they_o be_v think_v to_o be_v inspire_a ordinary_o proceed_v from_o natural_a cause_n viz._n natural_a enthusiasm_n or_o present_a fervour_n of_o temper_n for_o 1._o the_o dissenter_n confess_v it_o come_v upon_o they_o much_o often_o in_o their_o public_a than_o in_o their_o private_a devotion_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v plain_a because_o the_o passion_n of_o the_o congregation_n do_v so_o excite_v their_o affection_n and_o the_o reverence_n of_o a_o auditory_a oblige_v they_o so_o much_o to_o wreck_v their_o invention_n that_o their_o spirit_n be_v many_o time_n transport_v into_o rapture_n 2._o they_o be_v not_o so_o fluent_a in_o the_o beginning_n as_o when_o they_o have_v pray_v a_o while_n the_o reason_n of_o which_o be_v this_o because_o the_o spirit_n do_v not_o move_v so_o brisk_o till_o they_o be_v chafe_v and_o heat_v with_o labour_n then_o do_v they_o natural_o raise_v the_o fancy_n and_o render_v the_o invention_n more_o copious_a and_o easy_a and_o certain_o it_o be_v unwarrantable_a to_o attribute_v that_o to_o inspiration_n which_o do_v so_o apparent_o proceed_v from_o natural_a cause_n thus_o have_v i_o show_v what_o the_o extraordinary_a operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v and_o that_o they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v pretend_v to_o in_o these_o time_n i_o proceed_v in_o the_o next_o place_n to_o show_v very_o brief_o what_o those_o ordinary_a operation_n be_v which_o he_o have_v promise_v to_o continue_v to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n they_o be_v therefore_o the_o proper_a grace_n and_o affection_n of_o prayer_n such_o as_o shame_v sorrow_n hope_v etc._n etc._n but_o as_o for_o the_o expression_n of_o prayer_n they_o be_v of_o no_o account_n with_o god_n but_o as_o they_o signify_v to_o he_o the_o grace_n and_o affection_n of_o it_o now_o can_v any_o man_n imagine_v that_o those_o affection_n will_v be_v the_o less_o acceptable_a to_o god_n because_o they_o be_v present_v in_o a_o form_n and_o not_o extempore_o will_v a_o father_n deny_v bread_n to_o his_o child_n because_o he_o ask_v it_o to_o day_n in_o the_o same_o word_n that_o he_o do_v yesterday_o be_v god_n more_o take_v with_o word_n than_o with_o affection_n certain_o his_o withdraw_a the_o inspiration_n of_o word_n and_o continue_v the_o inspiration_n of_o affection_n prove_v the_o contrary_n now_o that_o god_n do_v continue_v the_o inspiration_n of_o devout_a affection_n in_o prayer_n be_v manifest_a from_o gal._n 4.6_o judas_n 20._o earth_n beget_v those_o affection_n which_o render_v our_o prayer_n prevalent_a and_o these_o be_v the_o stand_n and_o ordinary_a operation_n which_o the_o scripture_n attribute_n to_o the_o spirit_n in_o prayer_n second_o stint_v or_o limit_v the_o spirit_n be_v a_o phrase_n that_o be_v never_o mention_v in_o scripture_n or_o antiquity_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o very_a new_a objection_n against_o form_n of_o prayer_n which_o i_o have_v show_v to_o be_v warrant_v both_o by_o scripture_n and_o antiquity_n however_o what_o the_o dissenter_n mean_v by_o it_o be_v this_o viz._n that_o by_o confine_v ourselves_o to_o a_o form_n of_o word_n we_o stint_n or_o limit_n that_o be_v restrain_v the_o spirit_n from_o give_v we_o that_o assistance_n which_o he_o ordinary_o vouchsafe_v in_o conceive_a prayer_n and_o now_o have_v explain_v the_o two_o forego_v particular_n the_o answer_n to_o this_o objection_n will_v be_v very_o easy_a for_o if_o the_o spirit_n be_v stint_v or_o restrain_v by_o form_n of_o prayer_n it_o must_v be_v either_o from_o inspire_v the_o word_n or_o from_o exciting_a the_o affection_n of_o prayer_n but_o i_o have_v prove_v that_o form_n be_v so_o far_o from_o restrain_v the_o devotion_n of_o prayer_n that_o they_o do_v very_o much_o promote_v and_o improve_v it_o and_o as_o for_o the_o word_n i_o have_v prove_v that_o since_o the_o first_o propagation_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o spirit_n have_v withdraw_v the_o immediate_a and_o miraculous_a inspiration_n of_o they_o and_o since_o that_o can_v be_v stint_v which_o be_v not_o therefore_o the_o inspiration_n of_o the_o word_n of_o prayer_n be_v not_o stint_v by_o form_n 3._o it_o be_v object_v that_o public_a form_n be_v a_o sinful_a neglect_n of_o the_o ministerial_a gift_n of_o prayer_n for_o the_o dissenter_n say_v the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n be_v a_o ability_n to_o express_v our_o mind_n in_o prayer_n which_o god_n have_v give_v to_o minister_n as_o a_o mean_n of_o public_a devotion_n and_o therefore_o they_o may_v not_o omit_v the_o exercise_n of_o it_o by_o use_v form_n of_o other_o man_n composure_n now_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v 1._o that_o suppose_v that_o it_o be_v a_o fault_n in_o minister_n to_o omit_v the_o exercise_n of_o their_o ability_n yet_o the_o people_n be_v not_o to_o be_v charge_v with_o it_o god_n will_v not_o reject_v the_o people_n devotion_n because_o the_o minister_n be_v to_o blame_v he_o only_o be_v accountable_a for_o that_o for_o the_o people_n do_v not_o join_v with_o he_o in_o his_o omission_n but_o in_o that_o which_o be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n 2._o this_o gift_n of_o prayer_n be_v either_o natural_a or_o acquire_v for_o certain_o it_o be_v not_o inspire_a at_o ordination_n because_o the_o scripture_n do_v not_o promise_v any_o such_o thing_n nor_o be_v there_o any_o experience_n of_o it_o nay_o the_o dissent_v minister_n must_v own_v that_o just_a before_o their_o ordination_n they_o be_v as_o able_a to_o express_v the_o devotion_n of_o a_o congregation_n as_o they_o be_v just_a after_o which_o show_v that_o they_o have_v no_o new_a ability_n to_o pray_v inspire_a in_o their_o ordination_n now_o since_o this_o gift_n or_o ability_n be_v nothing_o more_o than_o a_o quickness_n of_o invention_n and_o speech_n which_o be_v either_o natural_a or_o acquire_v by_o art_n and_o practice_n therefore_o it_o be_v no_o otherwise_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n than_o our_o natural_a strength_n or_o skill_n in_o history_n or_o the_o like_a all_o that_o god_n have_v promise_v his_o minister_n be_v to_o concur_v with_o their_o honest_a endeavour_n as_o far_o as_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o discharge_n of_o their_o office_n and_o to_o suppose_v that_o this_o can_v be_v do_v without_o pray_v extempore_o be_v to_o take_v the_o matter_n in_o question_n for_o grant_v 3._o this_o freedom_n of_o utterance_n be_v never_o call_v the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n in_o scripture_n pray_v in_o unknown_a language_n be_v once_o call_v a_o gift_n but_o pray_v in_o our_o own_o language_n be_v never_o call_v so_o therefore_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o the_o gift_n of_o readiness_n of_o speech_n be_v not_o appropriate_v by_o god_n to_o prayer_n but_o leave_v in_o common_a to_o all_o other_o honest_a use_n that_o it_o can_v be_v apply_v to_o and_o it_o may_v as_o well_o be_v call_v the_o gift_n of_o plead_v at_o the_o bar_n or_o of_o dispute_v or_o conversation_n as_o the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n according_o we_o find_v that_o those_o who_o have_v this_o gift_n in_o prayer_n have_v it_o
more_o general_a confession_n of_o sin_n which_o we_o make_v with_o the_o whole_a congregation_n and_o we_o shall_v then_o have_v less_o reason_n to_o complain_v that_o those_o confession_n be_v too_o general_a and_o not_o apt_a to_o move_v we_o because_o this_o will_v cure_v the_o deadness_n of_o our_o heart_n which_o be_v common_o most_o to_o blame_v when_o we_o find_v fault_n with_o the_o mean_n that_o god_n have_v provide_v for_o we_o 2._o the_o next_o objection_n be_v the_o shortness_n of_o our_o collect_v by_o reason_n of_o which_o it_o be_v pretend_v that_o the_o prayer_n be_v often_o as_o one_o continue_v form_n for_o the_o work_n of_o pray_v be_v as_o much_o continue_v all_o the_o while_n as_o if_o there_o be_v but_o one_o continue_a form_n because_o we_o pass_v from_o one_o petition_n to_o another_o or_o from_o one_o matter_n of_o invocation_n to_o another_o as_o immediate_o as_o if_o the_o distinct_a form_n be_v all_o bring_v into_o the_o compass_n of_o one_o nay_o the_o attention_n of_o the_o people_n be_v rather_o help_v by_o the_o frequency_n of_o say_v amen_o and_o their_o godly_a disposition_n of_o mind_n which_o be_v the_o best_a thing_n in_o prayer_n may_v be_v keep_v alive_a and_o more_o effectual_o secure_v by_o call_v upon_o the_o name_n of_o god_n and_o plead_v the_o merit_n of_o christ_n so_o often_o as_o we_o do_v beside_o the_o invocation_n of_o god_n somewhat_o often_o by_o his_o attribute_n maintain_v in_o our_o mind_n a_o reverend_a sense_n of_o his_o majestic_a presence_n which_o we_o all_o know_v be_v needful_a to_o make_v we_o pray_v as_o we_o ought_v and_o the_o frequency_n of_o mention_v christ_n merit_n and_o mediation_n strengthen_v our_o faith_n and_o assurance_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v hear_v it_o be_v also_o the_o peculiar_a character_n of_o christian_a devotion_n and_o distinguish_v we_o from_o the_o papist_n in_o declare_v our_o detestation_n of_o call_v upon_o god_n in_o the_o name_n of_o saint_n or_o any_o other_o but_o that_o of_o christ_n if_o it_o be_v say_v that_o we_o say_v amen_o and_o break_v off_o our_o prayer_n too_o often_o i_o reply_v that_o all_o wise_a and_o humble_a man_n will_v submit_v themselves_o in_o that_o case_n to_o the_o judgement_n of_o their_o superior_n 3._o some_z except_z against_o the_o repetition_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n and_o of_o glory_n be_v to_o the_o father_n etc._n etc._n and_o of_o lord_n have_v mercy_n upon_o we_o and_o the_o like_a because_o they_o think_v our_o saviour_n forbid_v it_o by_o say_v when_o you_o pray_v use_v not_o vain_a repetition_n but_o it_o appear_v by_o our_o saviour_n caution_n against_o vain_a repetition_n that_o some_o repetition_n be_v not_o vain_a and_o consequent_o not_o forbid_v this_o must_v be_v suppose_v because_o he_o himself_o when_o in_o his_o agony_n pray_v thrice_o in_o the_o same_o word_n now_o christ_n forbid_v the_o fault_n of_o the_o heathen_n who_o vain_a repetition_n proceed_v from_o a_o affectation_n of_o speak_v much_o or_o from_o a_o belief_n that_o god_n will_v not_o help_v they_o unless_o they_o repeat_v the_o same_o thing_n over_o in_o a_o tedious_a manner_n but_o the_o repetition_n of_o good_a prayer_n be_v nothing_o like_o their_o practice_n repetition_n be_v not_o vain_a if_o two_o thing_n be_v regard_v 1._o that_o the_o matter_n be_v very_o weighty_a and_o apt_a to_o move_v those_o pious_a affection_n which_o god_n be_v most_o please_v with_o in_o our_o address_n to_o he_o and_o in_o this_o respect_n i_o dare_v say_v our_o repetition_n be_v secure_v from_o who_o do_v not_o yet_o approve_v our_o repetition_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n etc._n etc._n to_o consider_v whether_o it_o be_v so_o easy_a to_o spend_v the_o time_n it_o take_v up_o more_o profitable_o than_o by_o join_v in_o good_a earnest_n with_o the_o congregation_n in_o these_o prayer_n .._o 4._o some_o person_n dislike_v the_o responsal_n of_o the_o congregation_n and_o the_o people_n say_v the_o confession_n and_o the_o lord_n prayer_n after_o the_o minister_n and_o their_o alternate_a recite_v the_o psalm_n and_o hymn_n and_o some_o petition_n in_o the_o daily_a service_n now_o i_o beg_v these_o man_n to_o consider_v what_o have_v be_v often_o say_v viz._n that_o this_o way_n be_v apt_a to_o check_v a_o wander_a spirit_n to_o help_v attention_n and_o quicken_v a_o lively_a zeal_n in_o god_n service_n whilst_o we_o invite_v and_o provoke_v one_o another_o to_o pray_v and_o give_v thanks_o they_o say_v indeed_o that_o the_o minister_n be_v appoint_v to_o be_v the_o mouth_n of_o the_o people_n in_o god_n public_a service_n but_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v 1._o that_o grant_v the_o minister_n to_o be_v appoint_v for_o the_o mouth_n of_o the_o people_n yet_o it_o must_v not_o be_v so_o interpret_v as_o to_o make_v all_o vocal_a prayer_n and_o thanksgiving_n in_o religious_a assembly_n unlawful_a to_o the_o people_n for_o then_o the_o people_n must_v not_o say_v amen_o which_o be_v a_o short_a responsal_n to_o the_o minister_n nor_o must_v they_o join_v in_o sing_v psalm_n which_o oftentimes_o contain_v matter_n of_o prayer_n 2._o the_o scripture_n do_v not_o say_v that_o the_o minister_n be_v the_o mouth_n of_o the_o people_n to_o god_n or_o that_o no_o prayer_n must_v be_v offer_v up_o in_o religious_a assembly_n otherwise_o than_o by_o the_o mouth_n of_o the_o minister_n it_o be_v true_a the_o minister_n be_v the_o mouth_n of_o the_o people_n in_o all_o those_o prayer_n which_o he_o utter_v for_o they_o and_o because_o these_o be_v many_o more_o than_o what_o the_o people_n themselves_o utter_v he_o may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v their_o mouth_n to_o god_n comparative_o but_o not_o absolute_o it_o be_v true_a also_o that_o the_o minister_n be_v appoint_v for_o the_o people_n in_o all_o public_a service_n appertain_v to_o god_n if_o this_o be_v understand_v for_o the_o most_o part_n or_o of_o all_o with_o little_a exception_n some_o public_a service_n be_v pronounce_v by_o he_o only_o and_o as_o for_o the_o rest_n it_o be_v fit_a he_o shall_v ever_o utter_v most_o of_o they_o and_o that_o in_o those_o wherein_o the_o people_n have_v their_o part_n he_o shall_v ever_o go_v before_o and_o lead_v they_o and_o guide_v the_o whole_a performance_n which_o be_v all_o take_a care_n for_o in_o our_o liturgy_n nay_o the_o dissenter_n themselves_o do_v not_o utter_o debar_v the_o people_n from_o all_o vocal_a prayer_n and_o thanksgiving_n of_o their_o own_o in_o god_n solemn_a worship_n for_o they_o allow_v the_o people_n to_o sing_v psalm_n and_o why_o then_o may_v they_o not_o bear_v a_o part_n in_o the_o hymn_n and_o psalm_n by_o alternate_a response_n i_o can_v see_v why_o sing_v or_o not_o sing_v shall_v make_v such_o a_o difference_n it_o be_v better_o if_o they_o be_v every_o where_o sing_v because_o it_o be_v more_o suitable_a to_o the_o design_n of_o they_o than_o bear_v recite_v be_v but_o if_o they_o be_v not_o sing_v the_o next_o use_n of_o they_o that_o be_v most_o agreeable_a to_o their_o nature_n and_o design_n be_v recite_v they_o by_o answer_v in_o turn_n as_o the_o custom_n be_v with_o we_o for_o this_o be_v much_o near_a to_o sing_v than_o the_o minister_n recite_v all_o himself_o but_o say_v they_o the_o people_n verse_n be_v in_o a_o manner_n lose_v to_o some_o of_o the_o 3._o some_o be_v offend_v with_o our_o pray_n against_o sudden_a death_n but_o why_o shall_v we_o not_o by_o sudden_a death_n understand_v our_o be_v take_v out_o of_o this_o world_n when_o we_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o die_v for_o sometime_o a_o thing_n be_v say_v to_o be_v sudden_a to_o we_o when_o we_o be_v not_o prepare_v for_o it_o and_o in_o this_o sense_n can_v any_o good_a christian_a find_v fault_n with_o the_o petition_n but_o suppose_v that_o by_o sudden_a death_n we_o mean_v what_o be_v common_o understand_v by_o it_o that_o be_v a_o death_n of_o which_o a_o man_n have_v not_o the_o least_o warning_n by_o sickness_n be_v there_o not_o reason_n why_o even_o good_a man_n may_v desire_v not_o to_o die_v sudden_o may_v they_o not_o when_o they_o find_v themselves_o draw_v towards_o their_o end_n by_o their_o good_a instruction_n and_o admonition_n make_v impression_n upon_o their_o friend_n companion_n and_o relation_n to_o the_o better_n of_o they_o may_v not_o their_o counsel_n be_v then_o more_o effectual_a with_o they_o than_o ever_o they_o be_v before_o and_o be_v it_o not_o reasonable_a to_o believe_v they_o will_v be_v so_o as_o for_o themselves_o may_v not_o
