particular_a occasion_n probable_o when_o david_n go_v forth_o against_o the_o ammonite_n 2_o sam._n 10._o yet_o it_o have_v this_o doctrine_n of_o general_a concernment_n viz._n that_o godly_a christian_a ruler_n who_o be_v nurse_a father_n to_o the_o church_n of_o god_n aught_o to_o be_v remember_v in_o our_o prayer_n for_o a_o blessing_n upon_o their_o design_n and_o endeavour_n for_o god_n people_n and_o against_o he_o and_o their_o enemy_n it_o teach_v likewise_o that_o it_o be_v god_n blessing_n alone_o that_o keep_v the_o city_n as_o we_o have_v it_o in_o another_o psalm_n psal._n 127._o the_o 21._o psalm_n show_v likewise_o that_o the_o safety_n of_o the_o church_n and_o of_o all_o christian_a state_n depend_v on_o god_n alone_o and_o give_v we_o also_o occasion_n of_o admire_v the_o glory_n of_o christ_n kingdom_n which_o be_v so_o great_a through_o god_n salvation_n see_v david_n in_o his_o kingdom_n over_o israel_n be_v a_o type_n of_o christ_n reign_v in_o his_o church_n and_o so_o also_o the_o passage_n in_o david_n psalm_n that_o respect_v his_o rule_n and_o government_n have_v a_o aim_n at_o somewhat_o answerable_a to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n what_o more_o comfortable_a consideration_n can_v any_o poor_a soul_n have_v than_o the_o subject_a matter_n of_o the_o 24_o psalm_n wherein_o the_o question_n be_v resolve_v whether_o god_n have_v any_o peculiar_a company_n divide_v from_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o world_n of_o which_o he_o be_v more_o especialiy_o tender_a and_o careful_a and_o where_o this_o company_n be_v and_o what_o manner_n of_o man_n they_o be_v who_o as_o i_o may_v say_v be_v the_o fellow_n of_o this_o society_n here_o we_o may_v learn_v that_o god_n have_v a_o church_n on_o earth_n call_v out_o of_o the_o world_n and_o distinguish_v from_o it_o that_o not_o hypocrite_n and_o formal_a professor_n but_o hearty_a and_o upright_a christian_n only_o communicate_v in_o the_o spiritual_a and_o everlasting_a blessing_n which_o god_n pour_v upon_o the_o church_n and_o that_o all_o even_o the_o great_a be_v invite_v and_o call_v upon_o to_o enter_v into_o this_o society_n of_o god_n people_n out_o of_o which_o there_o be_v no_o salvation_n the_o 25_o psalm_n be_v pen_v when_o david_n be_v in_o great_a distress_n and_o be_v a_o eminent_a testimony_n of_o his_o faith_n in_o god_n which_o he_o express_v in_o his_o earnest_a prayer_n unto_o which_o he_o encourage_v himself_o by_o the_o consideration_n of_o god_n faithfulness_n in_o his_o promise_n and_o in_o all_o his_o way_n of_o providence_n more_o especial_o in_o that_o he_o manifest_v himself_o to_o his_o people_n in_o the_o guidance_n and_o government_n of_o his_o good_a spirit_n that_o they_o may_v not_o mistake_v and_o so_o miscarry_v in_o their_o christian_a race_n now_o what_o can_v be_v more_o sweet_a to_o any_o pious_a soul_n than_o the_o serious_a consideration_n of_o such_o gracious_a and_o merciful_a deal_n of_o god_n with_o his_o people_n or_o how_o can_v such_o a_o soul_n choose_v but_o be_v much_o enlarge_v towards_o the_o lord_n when_o it_o meditate_v as_o it_o ought_v upon_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o will_v a_o christian_a express_v his_o integrity_n and_o innocency_n and_o resolution_n to_o cleave_v close_o to_o god_n in_o way_n of_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n however_o he_o be_v defame_v in_o the_o world_n or_o whatever_o else_o befall_v he_o how_o pertinent_a be_v the_o 26_o psalm_n the_o 27_o psalm_n teach_v we_o wherein_o lie_v a_o christian_n safety_n peace_n comfort_n and_o all_o viz._n in_o god_n protection_n and_o gracious_a providence_n over_o he_o it_o teach_v also_o what_o must_v be_v a_o christian_n chief_a care_n in_o all_o estate_n and_o condition_n viz._n that_o he_o may_v continue_v and_o abide_v in_o the_o sincere_a profession_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o the_o faithful_a service_n of_o god_n according_a to_o his_o will_n and_o so_o to_o comfort_v himself_o and_o encourage_v his_o heart_n till_o god_n be_v please_v to_o come_v in_o with_o deliverance_n the_o 28_o psalm_n to_o say_v no_o more_o of_o it_o may_v teach_v we_o that_o god_n alone_o be_v to_o be_v pray_v unto_o in_o all_o danger_n and_o he_o alone_o to_o be_v praise_v for_o all_o deliverance_n and_o also_o that_o in_o all_o our_o address_n to_o god_n we_o be_v more_o especial_o to_o commend_v unto_o he_o the_o safety_n and_o enlargement_n of_o his_o church_n may_v we_o not_o sing_v the_o 29_o psalm_n with_o much_o comfort_n and_o spiritual_a benefit_n if_o we_o set_v ourselves_o to_o meditate_v on_o the_o matter_n scope_n and_o drift_n of_o it_o which_o be_v to_o invite_v all_o to_o lay_v aside_o carnal_a confidence_n in_o wealth_n strength_n wisdom_n or_o any_o such_o like_a thing_n and_o to_o submit_v themselves_o to_o the_o rule_n and_o government_n of_o god_n almighty_a who_o do_v wonderful_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n show_v his_o glory_n in_o the_o thunder_n of_o his_o power_n to_o make_v all_o creature_n even_o the_o dead_a and_o dumb_a in_o a_o manner_n to_o stand_v in_o awe_n of_o he_o and_o by_o all_o these_o terrible_a do_n of_o his_o teach_v his_o own_o people_n the_o more_o to_o trust_v he_o who_o be_v so_o able_a to_o preserve_v they_o and_o destroy_v all_o his_o and_o their_o enemy_n with_o the_o least_o blast_n of_o the_o breath_n of_o his_o nostril_n if_o we_o sing_v the_o thirty_o psalm_n we_o may_v see_v the_o frame_n of_o our_o own_o spirit_n in_o that_o of_o david_n who_o be_v as_o much_o cast_v down_o in_o adversity_n as_o he_o be_v before_o lift_v up_o in_o prosperity_n and_o how_o easy_a a_o matter_n it_o be_v for_o god_n to_o make_v sudden_a change_n as_o to_o our_o outward_a estate_n so_o to_o our_o inward_a also_o and_o that_o whatsoever_o change_v pass_v upon_o god_n people_n he_o can_v easy_o and_o sudden_o change_v all_o their_o mourning_n into_o mirth_n and_o so_o give_v they_o matter_n of_o rejoice_v in_o his_o salvation_n in_o the_o one_o and_o thirty_o psalm_n david_n teach_v we_o from_o his_o own_o experience_n that_o there_o be_v a_o inexhaustible_a store_n of_o all_o good_a lay_v up_o with_o god_n for_o there_o also_o we_o may_v learn_v that_o though_o god_n people_n be_v many_o time_n low_a in_o their_o own_o apprehension_n by_o reason_n of_o many_o and_o great_a danger_n yet_o so_o long_o as_o their_o eye_n and_o their_o heart_n be_v towards_o the_o lord_n as_o david_n be_v they_o may_v comfortable_o expect_v a_o good_a issue_n at_o last_o and_o thereupon_o be_v to_o encourage_v themselves_o and_o pluck_v up_o their_o spirit_n as_o they_o be_v exhort_v to_o do_v in_o the_o last_o verse_n of_o that_o psalm_n the_o 32d_o psalm_n teach_v we_o wherein_o lie_v true_a blessedness_n viz._n in_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o that_o we_o can_v never_o attain_v to_o assurance_n of_o that_o pardon_n and_o peace_n arise_v from_o it_o till_o we_o come_v free_o off_o from_o sin_n in_o a_o way_n of_o true_a humiliation_n and_o hearty_a confession_n of_o sin_n and_o that_o all_o such_o humble_a penitent_n have_v matter_n of_o rejoice_v when_o impenitent_a and_o harden_a rebel_n shall_v have_v sorrow_n enough_o how_o can_v we_o admire_v god_n gracious_a dispensation_n towards_o his_o israel_n better_a than_o by_o a_o affectionate_a sing_v the_o thirty_o three_o thirty_o forth_o and_o thirty_o seven_o psalm_n which_o set_v forth_o in_o most_o ample_a manner_n the_o goodness_n of_o god_n towards_o his_o own_o and_o his_o just_a indignation_n against_o all_o his_o and_o their_o enemy_n though_o for_o the_o present_a it_o be_v not_o easy_a for_o we_o to_o apprehend_v the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n in_o his_o deal_n with_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o and_o have_v not_o god_n people_n always_o occasion_n from_o god_n daily_a providence_n to_o sing_v such_o psalm_n as_o those_o that_o so_o they_o may_v confirm_v their_o heart_n in_o confidence_n on_o god_n and_o comfortable_a expectation_n from_o he_o though_o for_o the_o present_a they_o be_v in_o heaviness_n through_o manifold_a temptation_n thou_o may_v
miserable_a confusion_n of_o all_o christ_n enemy_n and_o opposer_n and_o the_o bless_a condition_n of_o such_o as_o submit_v themselves_o to_o he_o now_o these_o psalm_n be_v mere_o doctrinal_a and_o have_v nothing_o but_o instruction_n and_o admonition_n in_o they_o and_o be_v sing_v as_o well_o as_o other_o to_o the_o ptaise_v of_o god_n hence_o i_o say_v one_o end_n of_o our_o sing_v they_o be_v to_o learn_v the_o doctrine_n of_o they_o that_o it_o may_v be_v imprint_v upon_o our_o spirit_n or_o a_o sweet_a meditation_n in_o our_o heart_n upon_o that_o heavenly_a doctrine_n contain_v in_o those_o psalm_n to_o imprint_v it_o upon_o our_o mind_n and_o memory_n that_o we_o may_v be_v the_o more_o affect_v with_o it_o some_o psalm_n be_v mix_v and_o but_o in_o part_n doctrinal_a as_o psal._n 33._o and_o 34._o the_o angel_n of_o the_o lord_n encamp_v round_o about_o they_o that_o fear_v he_o the_o lion_n shall_v lack_v and_o suffer_v hunger_n but_o those_o that_o seek_v the_o lord_n shall_v not_o want_v any_o good_a thing_n etc._n etc._n these_o be_v doctrine_n of_o god_n providence_n â—…d_v care_n over_o his_o people_n and_o one_o main_a work_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o spirit_n in_o sing_v these_o and_o such_o like_a passage_n be_v to_o meditate_v upon_o those_o doctrine_n and_o in_o so_o do_v we_o give_v glory_n to_o god_n teach_v and_o admonish_v ourselves_o in_o a_o psalm_n col._n 3._o 16._o object_n but_o we_o may_v as_o well_o read_v they_o and_o so_o meditate_v on_o they_o for_o our_o instruction_n therefore_o there_o be_v no_o necessity_n that_o we_o shall_v sing_v psalm_n for_o that_o reason_n sol._n i_o deny_v not_o but_o we_o ought_v to_o read_v the_o psalm_n as_o any_o other_o scripture_n and_o in_o and_o after_o our_o read_n to_o meditate_v upon_o they_o in_o commend_v of_o sing_v i_o do_v not_o cry_v down_o read_v one_o good_a duty_n shall_v not_o shut_v out_o another_o so_o because_o we_o read_v the_o psalm_n and_o meditate_v on_o they_o it_o do_v not_o follow_v that_o therefore_o we_o shall_v not_o sing_v the_o psalm_n and_o meditate_v on_o they_o 2._o in_o sing_v there_o be_v a_o more_o distinct_a settle_a and_o fix_a meditation_n of_o the_o heart_n than_o there_o can_v be_v in_o read_n therefore_o david_n in_o the_o 104_o psalm_n insist_v upon_o the_o power_n and_o providence_n of_o god_n in_o make_v and_o govern_v the_o world_n he_o draw_v to_o a_o close_a of_o it_o in_o the_o 34_o verse_n profess_v his_o joy_n in_o the_o lord_n from_o the_o consideration_n of_o god_n power_n and_o providence_n i_o will_v sing_v unto_o praise_n to_o my_o god_n while_o i_o have_v my_o be_v the_o lord_n as_o long_o as_o i_o live_v i_o will_v sing_v why_o unto_o god_n that_o make_v i_o that_o make_v all_o the_o world_n that_o maintain_v my_o soul_n in_o life_n and_o then_o he_o add_v my_o meditation_n of_o he_o shall_v be_v sweet_a and_o i_o will_v be_v glad_a in_o the_o lord_n david_n will_v not_o only_o speak_v of_o the_o work_n of_o god_n power_n and_o providence_n but_o he_o will_v sing_v of_o they_o that_o his_o meditation_n may_v be_v sweet_a therefore_o though_o we_o read_v the_o psalm_n yet_o we_o ought_v also_o to_o sing_v they_o sometime_o because_o there_o be_v more_o sweetness_n of_o meditation_n in_o sing_v than_o in_o read_v or_o the_o bare_a recite_n of_o they_o in_o sing_v there_o be_v a_o dilate_n of_o the_o sound_n and_o a_o draw_v out_o of_o the_o voice_n which_o give_v we_o more_o time_n for_o the_o fix_n of_o our_o heart_n upon_o that_o which_o be_v sing_v in_o a_o more_o sweet_a meditation_n of_o the_o goodness_n or_o power_n of_o god_n or_o whatsoever_o the_o matter_n be_v therefore_o the_o mercy_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o the_o great_a thing_n that_o god_n have_v do_v in_o the_o world_n have_v be_v commemorate_a with_o sing_v the_o people_n of_o god_n do_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o to_o say_v what_o god_n have_v do_v for_o they_o but_o they_o do_v sing_v it_o that_o they_o may_v meditate_v the_o more_o upon_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n and_o be_v the_o more_o affect_v with_o it_o 3._o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o to_o meditate_v as_o david_n intimate_v in_o that_o place_n but_o we_o must_v have_v sweet_a meditation_n of_o he_o that_o we_o may_v be_v glad_a in_o the_o lord_n i_o will_v be_v glad_a in_o the_o lord_n when_o we_o sing_v there_o be_v a_o more_o than_o ordinary_a raise_n or_o lift_v up_o of_o our_o soul_n and_o so_o far_o more_o sweetness_n in_o meditation_n on_o what_o be_v sing_v than_o what_o be_v bare_o say_v the_o soul_n i_o say_v in_o sing_v be_v as_o it_o be_v elevate_v and_o raise_v and_o so_o come_v to_o be_v more_o ravish_v with_o admiration_n of_o what_o god_n have_v do_v let_v they_o who_o have_v have_v experience_n of_o communion_n with_o god_n in_o this_o duty_n speak_v whether_o they_o have_v not_o find_v a_o great_a raise_n of_o their_o heart_n in_o it_o whether_o they_o have_v not_o be_v rapt_v and_o ravish_v as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o consideration_n of_o god_n goodness_n in_o his_o promise_n and_o the_o work_n of_o his_o spiritual_a and_o gracious_a providence_n i_o say_v not_o that_o meditation_n be_v all_o the_o end_n of_o sing_a psalm_n but_o this_o be_v one_o chief_a end_n obj._n therefore_o if_o you_o say_v why_o may_v we_o not_o read_v and_o meditate_v without_o more_o ado_n ans._n i_o answer_v we_o may_v and_o must_v read_v but_o why_o not_o the_o other_o also_o since_o it_o be_v more_o useful_a and_o help_n to_o more_o sweetness_n in_o meditation_n a_o man_n may_v pray_v in_o his_o heart_n without_o move_v his_o lip_n as_o hanna_n do_v but_o thou_o shall_v find_v it_o a_o quicken_n in_o prayer_n if_o thou_o use_v thy_o tongue_n also_o the_o voice_n be_v a_o great_a matter_n to_o quicken_v we_o in_o prayer_n and_o to_o keep_v our_o heart_n in_o order_n therefore_o as_o i_o will_v have_v man_n pray_v in_o secret_a so_o be_v i_o to_o advise_v they_o i_o will_v have_v they_o use_v their_o voice_n too_o provide_v always_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v hear_v of_o man_n only_o so_o here_o also_o whereas_o man_n say_v we_o may_v read_v a_o psalm_n as_o well_o as_o sing_v it_o i_o answer_v sing_v will_v affect_v we_o more_o than_o read_v as_o pray_v with_o the_o voice_n do_v affect_v we_o more_o than_o when_o we_o pray_v and_o do_v not_o use_v our_o tongue_n you_o shall_v find_v your_o heart_n will_v be_v more_o apt_a to_o wander_v if_o you_o do_v not_o use_v your_o voice_n than_o they_o will_v be_v if_o you_o do_v therefore_o as_o we_o shall_v use_v our_o voice_n to_o help_v we_o in_o prayer_n so_o why_o shall_v we_o not_o lift_v up_o the_o voice_n in_o sing_v that_o we_o may_v be_v help_v also_o in_o our_o meditation_n even_o with_o enlargement_n and_o ravishment_n of_o spirit_n questionless_a the_o lift_n up_o of_o the_o voice_n be_v a_o great_a help_n to_o enlarge_v the_o heart_n when_o it_o be_v well_o affect_v now_o when_o people_n complain_v and_o say_v their_o heart_n be_v not_o suitable_a to_o such_o and_o such_o passage_n in_o the_o psalm_n nor_o those_o passage_n to_o their_o heart_n i_o say_v that_o there_o be_v no_o passage_n in_o all_o david_n psalm_n but_o thou_o may_v accommodate_v it_o if_o no_o otherwise_o yet_o in_o this_o way_n viz._n by_o a_o sweet_a meditation_n upon_o it_o and_o i_o will_v fain_o know_v where_o that_o passage_n be_v that_o a_o gracious_a spirit_n may_v not_o have_v sweet_a meditation_n upon_o it_o sure_o thou_o have_v a_o very_a ungracious_a heart_n if_o thou_o can_v not_o do_v this_o if_o there_o be_v such_o a_o psalm_n or_o such_o passage_n of_o a_o psalm_n as_o thou_o think_v thou_o can_v no_o way_n bring_v it_o to_o thy_o condition_n yet_o i_o say_v thou_o may_v bring_v thy_o heart_n to_o that_o psalm_n or_o to_o that_o passage_n by_o a_o sweet_a meditation_n upon_o it_o and_o i_o will_v fain_o know_v where_o that_o good_a christian_n be_v that_o will_v deny_v it_o to_o be_v his_o duty_n to_o have_v sweet_a meditation_n upon_o david_n psalm_n or_o any_o passage_n in_o they_o be_v there_o think_v you_o any_o passage_n in_o david_n psalm_n that_o a_o christian_n may_v not_o meditate_v upon_o and_o so_o take_v comfort_n in_o god_n and_o his_o word_n and_o so_o you_o may_v be_v satisfy_v about_o the_o historical_a psalm_n and_o those_o passage_n in_o they_o that_o have_v respect_n to_o other_o man_n and_o other_o time_n as_o near_o as_o i_o can_v i_o shall_v instance_n in_o some_o of_o all_o kind_n some_o psalm_n be_v only_o doctrinal_a some_o be_v only_o historical_a as_o the_o 78_o psalm_n the_o 105_o and_o 106_o psalm_n etc._n etc._n
edification_n and_o by_o use_v they_o also_o as_o one_o say_v well_o for_o and_o in_o the_o behalf_n of_o other_o that_o be_v of_o the_o same_o mystical_a body_n with_o ourselves_o that_o so_o we_o may_v rejoice_v with_o they_o that_o rejoice_v and_o weep_v with_o those_o that_o weep_v as_o say_v he_o there_o be_v scarce_o any_o passage_n of_o the_o psalm_n but_o it_o either_o concern_v ourselves_o or_o some_o other_o of_o the_o church_n of_o god_n who_o at_o this_o day_n be_v or_o may_v be_v in_o the_o same_o or_o in_o the_o like_a case_n and_o condition_n as_o david_n or_o the_o church_n of_o god_n be_v then_o who_o we_o be_v to_o remember_v as_o if_o we_o be_v in_o bond_n with_o they_o or_o to_o bless_v god_n for_o as_o if_o we_o be_v in_o like_o prosperity_n with_o they_o he_o that_o read_v the_o scripture_n or_o sing_v a_o psalm_n or_o do_v any_o duty_n without_o reverence_n attention_n good_a affection_n and_o some_o good_a use_n make_v of_o the_o same_o he_o take_v god_n name_n in_o vain_a this_o be_v grant_v but_o to_o say_v as_o some_o do_v that_o other_o lie_v in_o sing_v such_o psalm_n as_o do_v not_o express_v their_o own_o condition_n in_o every_o particular_a be_v as_o far_o as_o i_o understand_v a_o belie_n or_o slander_v they_o and_o i_o wish_v they_o may_v well_o consider_v it_o for_o as_o i_o have_v say_v a_o wicked_a man_n lie_v as_o much_o in_o read_v as_o in_o sing_v of_o a_o psalm_n though_o indeed_o it_o be_v not_o lie_v but_o report_v or_o recite_v what_o god_n have_v reveal_v in_o his_o word_n for_o admonition_n and_o instruction_n to_o all_o man_n you_o have_v now_o see_v one_o end_n and_o use_v of_o sing_a psalm_n and_o if_o there_o be_v no_o more_o i_o conceive_v it_o be_v well_o worth_a the_o while_n sermon_n
