have_v that_o promise_n when_o he_o be_v afflict_v with_o the_o thorn_n in_o the_o flesh_n and_o a_o messenger_n of_o satan_n to_o buffet_v he_o god_n tell_v he_o that_o his_o grace_n shall_v be_v sufficient_a for_o he_o 2_o cor._n 12.9_o and_o he_o make_v use_v of_o that_o and_o gather_v strength_n from_o it_o but_o suppose_v now_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n have_v no_o particular_a promise_n to_o prayer_n and_o so_o you_o will_v find_v the_o saint_n have_v make_v use_n of_o the_o power_n of_o god_n that_o be_v put_v forth_o in_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n i_o remember_v jeremiah_n chapter_n 32._o when_v the_o child_n of_o israel_n be_v to_o go_v into_o captivity_n for_o seventy_o year_n the_o lord_n bad_a jeremiah_n to_o buy_v the_o field_n of_o his_o uncle_n for_o a_o evidence_n that_o god_n will_v bring_v his_o people_n back_o again_o jeremiah_n when_o he_o have_v do_v he_o will_v fall_v to_o prayer_n and_o he_o make_v use_v of_o the_o power_n of_o god_n at_o the_o 17_o verse_n ah_o lord_n god_n behold_v thou_o have_v make_v the_o heaven_n and_o earth_n by_o thy_o great_a power_n and_o stretch_v out_o arm_n and_o there_o be_v nothing_o too_o hard_o for_o pray_v with_o hope_n and_o expectation_n wait_v for_o a_o answer_n of_o our_o prayer_n from_o the_o lord_n one_o way_n or_o other_o in_o the_o lord_n own_o way_n for_o sometime_o the_o lord_n may_v answer_v we_o in_o a_o way_n that_o we_o can_v not_o expect_v not_o in_o that_o particular_a thing_n that_o we_o pray_v for_o as_o david_n say_v in_o psal_n 35.13_o but_o as_o for_o i_o when_o they_o be_v sick_a my_o clothing_n be_v sackcloth_n i_o humble_v my_o soul_n with_o fast_v and_o
much_o in_o a_o way_n of_o charity_n perform_v good_a work_n and_o be_v give_v to_o alms-deed_n in_o relieve_v the_o poor_a saint_n of_o christ_n be_v not_o this_o please_a unto_o god_n if_o i_o suffer_v for_o the_o truth_n sake_n do_v not_o this_o please_v god_n why_o do_v but_o observe_v and_o consider_v what_o the_o apostle_n here_o say_v without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n and_o consider_v also_o what_o the_o apostle_n speak_v 1_o cor._n 13.3_o say_v he_o though_o i_o give_v all_o my_o good_n to_o feed_v the_o poor_a and_o if_o i_o give_v my_o body_n to_o be_v burn_v yet_o all_o be_v nothing_o without_o charity_n without_o love_n and_o whence_o come_v this_o love_n but_o from_o faith_n it_o be_v faith_n that_o work_v love_n now_o if_o the_o apostle_n hear_v if_o we_o go_v on_o not_o to_o act_v faith_n in_o what_o we_o do_v all_o will_v be_v in_o vain_a and_o be_v you_o willing_a to_o be_v the_o worse_a for_o the_o duty_n that_o you_o perform_v and_o the_o ordinance_n that_o you_o enjoy_v true_o if_o we_o do_v not_o act_v faith_n in_o they_o we_o shall_v instead_o of_o be_v the_o better_o be_v the_o worse_a for_o they_o we_o can_v please_v enjoyment_n of_o ordinance_n that_o so_o what_o we_o do_v may_v please_v god_n some_o general_a direction_n be_v lay_v down_o that_o may_v serve_v for_o all_o duty_n i_o shall_v now_o go_v on_o through_o the_o lord_n assistance_n and_o give_v you_o some_o more_o particular_a direction_n how_o we_o may_v perform_v particular_a duty_n in_o faith_n that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n 1._o and_o in_o the_o first_o place_n we_o shall_v begin_v with_o the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n and_o show_v you_o how_o we_o may_v so_o pray_v in_o faith_n as_o we_o may_v please_v god_n for_o that_o be_v the_o prayer_n that_o god_n do_v accept_v that_o be_v a_o prayer_n of_o faith_n therefore_o it_o be_v say_v in_o james_n 5.15_o that_o the_o prayer_n of_o faith_n shall_v save_v the_o not_o pray_v in_o faith_n his_o prayer_n will_v not_o avail_v and_o he_o speak_v to_o those_o that_o be_v faithful_a for_o he_o write_v to_o the_o twelve_o tribe_n among_o who_o be_v many_o faithful_a tongue_n so_o i_o may_v say_v in_o this_o case_n a_o man_n have_v better_a put_v up_o five_o prayer_n in_o faith_n than_o ten_o thousand_o prayer_n without_o faith_n and_o though_o we_o speak_v but_o a_o few_o word_n in_o prayer_n if_o it_o be_v mix_v with_o faith_n it_o be_v more_o available_a than_o if_o we_o speak_v never_o so_o many_o word_n never_o so_o large_o without_o faith_n quest_n well_o you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v we_o so_o act_v faith_n in_o prayer_n that_o our_o prayer_n may_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n answ_n for_o answer_v beside_o what_o be_v presuppose_v before_o that_o the_o person_n must_v be_v a_o believer_n and_o also_o pass_v by_o those_o general_a rule_n of_o direction_n lay_v down_o before_o i_o shall_v give_v you_o four_o or_o five_o particular_a direction_n how_o we_o shall_v so_o pray_v in_o faith_n that_o our_o prayer_n may_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n namely_o first_o
but_o now_o faith_n will_v help_v a_o soul_n to_o go_v over_o all_o these_o objection_n it_o be_v my_o duty_n and_o i_o will_v do_v it_o in_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n notwithstanding_o this_o or_o that_o or_o the_o other_o temptation_n god_n have_v command_v i_o to_o pray_v evermore_o and_o pray_v without_o cease_v and_o that_o i_o shall_v pray_v and_o not_o faint_a possible_o satan_n will_v come_v with_o his_o temptation_n and_o objection_n do_v you_o not_o see_v that_o god_n seem_v to_o be_v angry_a and_o offend_v with_o your_o prayer_n god_n seem_v to_o answer_v you_o contrary_a to_o your_o prayer_n then_o to_o what_o end_n be_v it_o for_o you_o to_o pray_v yet_o faith_n will_v help_v a_o soul_n to_o answer_v all_o with_o this_o it_o be_v my_o duty_n it_o be_v to_o pray_v by_o virtue_n of_o some_o promise_n or_o other_o and_o this_o will_v mighty_o strengthen_v and_o help_v faith_n in_o prayer_n if_o a_o soul_n have_v but_o a_o promise_n to_o encourage_v he_o in_o prayer_n by_o this_o mean_v the_o soul_n will_v come_v to_o see_v as_o through_o a_o crevice_n the_o willingness_n of_o god_n to_o hear_v he_o and_o answer_v he_o the_o soul_n may_v possible_o scruple_n and_o question_n but_o if_o i_o pray_v will_v the_o lord_n hear_v i_o but_o if_o the_o soul_n come_v in_o the_o virtue_n of_o a_o promise_n he_o come_v with_o a_o great_a encouragement_n and_o persuasion_n that_o god_n will_v hear_v he_o now_o brethren_n for_o your_o help_n in_o this_o thing_n in_o pray_v by_o virtue_n of_o some_o promise_n understand_v and_o know_v that_o there_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o promise_n there_o be_v some_o more_o general_a promise_n concern_v god_n hear_v prayer_n and_o then_o there_o be_v some_o more_o particular_a promise_n concern_v some_o particular_a mercy_n or_o blessing_n that_o we_o pray_v for_o now_o as_o for_o the_o general_a promise_n the_o scripture_n be_v full_a of_o they_o that_o god_n be_v a_o god_n hear_v prayer_n in_o psalm_n 65.2_o o_o thou_o that_o hear_v prayer_n unto_o thou_o shall_v all_o flesh_n come_v god_n be_v a_o god_n hear_v prayer_n for_o the_o encouragement_n of_o all_o flesh_n to_o come_v unto_o the_o scripture_n and_o then_o there_o be_v some_o more_o particular_a promise_n about_o god_n hear_v prayer_n as_o now_o for_o some_o particular_a mercy_n or_o blessing_n that_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n may_v stand_v in_o need_n of_o there_o be_v some_o particular_a promise_n that_o suit_v they_o more_o particular_o as_o you_o know_v jacob_n he_o make_v use_v of_o that_o lord_n say_v he_o all_o malice_n and_o envy_n and_o evil-speaking_a and_o so_o receive_v the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n that_o you_o may_v grow_v thereby_o as_o in_o prayer_n if_o i_o regard_v iniquity_n in_o my_o heart_n god_n will_v not_o hear_v my_o prayer_n so_o in_o this_o case_n if_o we_o allow_v any_o sin_n in_o our_o heart_n any_o malice_n towards_o one_o or_o another_o when_o we_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n god_n will_v not_o listen_v to_o we_o and_o we_o shall_v not_o profit_v by_o the_o word_n this_o may_v be_v one_o cause_n why_o people_n hear_v so_o much_o and_o profit_n so_o little_a if_o so_o be_v they_o do_v allow_v malice_n and_o envy_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o allow_v themselves_o to_o speak_v evil_a of_o other_o they_o can_v hear_v the_o word_n to_o grow_v and_o profit_v by_o it_o no_o we_o be_v to_o exercise_v love_n in_o our_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n love_v to_o god_n and_o love_n to_o the_o word_n and_o love_n to_o the_o saint_n and_o love_n to_o one_o another_o for_o if_o so_o be_v that_o we_o do_v not_o love_v they_o that_o we_o have_v see_v or_o do_v see_v say_v the_o apostle_n how_o can_v we_o be_v true_o say_v to_o love_n god_n who_o we_o have_v not_o see_v 1_o john_n 4.20_o therefore_o this_o be_v one_o thing_n let_v we_o be_v careful_a to_o lay_v aside_o all_o malice_n and_o envy_n and_o evil-speaking_a if_o we_o do_v desire_v so_o to_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n as_o to_o profit_v by_o it_o second_o another_o impediment_n that_o the_o apostle_n have_v in_o the_o same_o place_n of_o peter_n be_v hypocrisy_n and_o guile_n this_o also_o must_v be_v lay_v aside_o or_o else_o we_o shall_v not_o receive_v the_o word_n so_o as_o to_o grow_v and_o profit_v by_o it_o if_o we_o come_v to_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n and_o do_v maintain_v guile_n and_o hypocrisy_n in_o our_o heart_n and_o allow_v of_o it_o than_o we_o can_v profit_v or_o grow_v by_o the_o word_n the_o apostle_n peter_n do_v plain_o hold_v forth_o that_o all_o guile_n and_o hypocrisy_n must_v be_v lay_v aside_o and_o so_o receive_v the_o word_n as_o new_o bear_v babe_n that_o you_o may_v grow_v thereby_o guile_n and_o hypocrisy_n do_v hinder_v our_o profit_v by_o the_o word_n for_o this_o be_v now_o a_o kind_n of_o stumbling-block_n we_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n and_o have_v a_o stumbling-block_n in_o our_o heart_n and_o say_v the_o lord_n in_o ezek._n 14.7_o if_o any_o man_n set_v up_o idol_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o put_v the_o stumbling-block_n of_o his_o iniquity_n before_o his_o face_n and_o come_v to_o a_o prophet_n to_o inquire_v of_o he_o concern_v i_o ay_o the_o lord_n will_v answer_v that_o man_n by_o myself_o some_o do_v expound_v that_o place_n the_o word_n stumbling-block_n for_o the_o separate_n and_o withdraw_v the_o heart_n from_o god_n now_o there_o be_v two_o kind_n of_o hypocrisy_n or_o guile_n that_o be_v to_o be_v lay_v aside_o in_o hear_v the_o word_n one_o be_v in_o respect_n of_o god_n the_o other_o be_v towards_o man_n the_o guile_n and_o hypocrisy_n towards_o god_n be_v this_o namely_o when_o as_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n do_v seem_v to_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n in_o his_o worship_n attend_v upon_o his_o word_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o heart_n be_v not_o near_o god_n but_o afar_o off_o from_o he_o here_o be_v hypocrisy_n and_o dissimulation_n towards_o god_n this_o people_n say_v god_n draw_v near_o to_o i_o with_o their_o mouth_n and_o lip_n but_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o i_o isa_n 29.13_o and_o so_o christ_n tell_v the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n in_o matt._n 15.8_o when_o as_o a_o man_n do_v pretend_v to_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n as_o if_o he_o will_v know_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n that_o he_o may_v do_v the_o which_o he_o hear_v now_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v not_o set_v to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n here_o be_v hypocrisy_n i_o remember_v jeremiah_n speak_v to_o that_o purpose_n in_o jer._n 52.20_o for_o you_o dissemble_v in_o your_o heart_n say_v he_o when_o you_o send_v i_o unto_o the_o lord_n your_o god_n say_v pray_v for_o we_o unto_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n and_o according_a to_o all_o that_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n shall_v say_v to_o we_o we_o
