countermand_n of_o the_o spiritual_a power_n but_o if_o on_o the_o contrary_n i_o must_v disobey_v the_o command_n of_o the_o civil_a power_n suppose_v the_o cause_n to_o be_v spiritual_a which_o way_n can_v i_o turn_v myself_o without_o danger_n of_o sin_v so_o that_o unless_o one_o of_o these_o two_o power_n be_v supreme_a in_o both_o cause_n when_o ever_o any_o cause_n happen_v to_o be_v contest_v between_o they_o as_o to_o be_v sure_o many_o must_v between_o two_o rival_n power_n i_o can_v neither_o obey_v nor_o disobey_v without_o sin_v against_o one_o or_o both_o and_o can_v we_o imagine_v that_o god_n who_o be_v the_o god_n of_o order_n and_o not_o of_o confusion_n will_v ever_o involve_v we_o in_o such_o inextricable_a difficulty_n by_o subject_v we_o to_o two_o supreme_a power_n that_o be_v so_o subject_a to_o clash_v and_o interfere_v with_o one_o another_o wherefore_o although_o as_o i_o shall_v show_v by_o and_o by_o the_o church_n be_v invest_v with_o a_o legislative_a power_n whereby_o it_o can_v restrain_v thing_n that_o be_v free_a and_o indifferent_a for_o its_o own_o security_n and_o decency_n and_o order_n yet_o this_o power_n be_v subordinate_a to_o the_o civil_a legislation_n which_o be_v in_o all_o cause_n supreme_a and_o can_v enact_v against_o it_o control_n or_o countermand_v it_o in_o any_o indifferent_a matter_n whether_o temporal_a or_o spiritual_a but_o stand_v oblige_v to_o recede_v to_o the_o civil_a sovereign_n who_o have_v the_o supreme_a disposal_n of_o all_o indifferent_a thing_n and_o in_o all_o contest_v case_n to_o veil_v its_o authority_n to_o he_o and_o according_o we_o find_v that_o during_o the_o first_o three_o hundred_o year_n when_o the_o civil_a power_n be_v enemy_n to_o christianity_n and_o do_v no_o otherwise_o concern_v themselves_o with_o it_o than_o to_o ruin_n and_o extirpate_v it_o the_o church_n make_v law_n for_o it_o self_n and_o by_o its_o own_o legislative_a power_n enact_v whatsoever_o it_o judge_v convenient_a or_o necessary_a for_o its_o own_o security_n or_o edification_n but_o yet_o it_o never_o presume_v in_o any_o indifferent_a matter_n to_o contradict_v the_o law_n of_o the_o empire_n nor_o do_v ever_o any_o christian_a because_o he_o be_v a_o subject_a of_o the_o church_n refuse_v to_o obey_v his_o prince_n in_o any_o case_n whatsoever_o where_o god_n have_v not_o countermand_v he_o as_o be_v most_o evident_a from_o hence_o because_o in_o all_o the_o history_n of_o those_o time_n we_o do_v not_o find_v one_o instance_n of_o any_o christian_n that_o suffer_v for_o so_o do_v in_o those_o day_n there_o be_v no_o martyr_n for_o indifferent_a thing_n which_o to_o be_v sure_a there_o must_v have_v be_v have_v the_o church_n then_o take_v upon_o it_o to_o determine_v indifference_n contrary_a to_o the_o edict_n of_o the_o emperor_n but_o the_o only_a thing_n they_o then_o suffer_v for_o be_v their_o refusal_n to_o disobey_v the_o express_a will_n of_o god_n in_o compliance_n with_o the_o wicked_a will_n of_o man_n which_o be_v a_o unanswerable_a argument_n that_o in_o those_o day_n the_o church_n never_o assume_v to_o itself_o any_o supreme_a authority_n over_o indifferent_a thing_n either_o in_o spiritual_n or_o temporal_n but_o leave_v that_o in_o those_o hand_n where_o god_n have_v place_v it_o viz._n in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o civil_a sovereign_n with_o who_o imperial_a law_n its_o canon_n never_o interfere_v with_o who_o legislative_a power_n it_o never_o justle_v for_o the_o wall_n but_o cheerful_o submit_v to_o it_o in_o all_o thing_n wherein_o it_o be_v not_o determine_v to_o the_o contrary_a by_o the_o express_a will_n of_o god._n and_o when_o afterward_o the_o civil_a sovereign_n embrace_v christianity_n he_o do_v not_o thereby_o divest_v himself_o
