prescription_n of_o circumstance_n which_o comprehend_v time_n place_n person_n and_o namely_o duration_n when_o and_o how_o long_o god_n shall_v be_v serve_v unto_o the_o prescription_n of_o the_o law_n of_o the_o church_n which_o he_o express_v more_o full_o pag._n 270._o saying_n it_o be_v in_o the_o free_a election_n of_o the_o church_n to_o appoint_v what_o day_n or_o day_n or_o time_n she_o think_v good_a or_o find_v convenient_a for_o religious_a duty_n for_o the_o evangelicall_a law_n have_v not_o determine_v any_o certain_a day_n or_o time_n and_o those_o action_n or_o circumstance_n which_o be_v not_o determine_v by_o divine_a precept_n be_v permit_v to_o the_o liberty_n and_o authority_n of_o the_o church_n to_o be_v determine_v and_o appoint_v so_o he_o but_o clear_v it_o be_v that_o the_o church_n of_o england_n disclame_v all_o such_o power_n but_o ascribe_v all_o authority_n of_o prescribe_v a_o time_n and_o day_n of_o holy_a rest_n unto_o the_o lord_n favour_v his_o opinion_n say_v that_o godly_a christian_a people_n begin_v to_o choose_v they_o a_o stand_a day_n of_o the_o week_n etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v at_o the_o church_n choice_n b._n our_o choice_n do_v not_o necessary_o imply_v a_o power_n of_o institution_n we_o be_v say_v to_o choose_v life_n and_o truth_n before_o death_n and_o error_n be_v we_o therefore_o the_o author_n of_o they_o again_o our_o choice_n herein_o be_v according_a to_o god_n commandment_n three_o the_o homily_n say_v express_o that_o those_o godly_a christian_a people_n do_v in_o their_o choice_n follow_v the_o example_n and_o commandment_n of_o god_n now_o what_o example_n have_v they_o but_o christ_n rise_v and_o rest_v on_o that_o day_n after_o the_o example_n of_o god_n rest_v the_o seven_o day_n and_o for_o commandment_n they_o have_v both_o the_o four_o commandment_n and_o a_o apostolical_a precept_n 1._o cor._n 16._o and_o that_o place_n in_o the_o revelation_n appropriate_v this_o day_n as_o holy_a to_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o ratify_v by_o god_n himself_o and_o who_o be_v they_o which_o teach_v those_o godly_a christian_a people_n to_o keep_v this_o day_n viz._n the_o apostle_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v put_v a_o vast_a difference_n between_o the_o unerring_a apostle_n and_o the_o succeed_a church_n so_o as_o the_o homily_n be_v clear_a against_o he_o a._n but_o see_v this_o seem_v to_o i_o the_o main_a knot_n of_o the_o whole_a controversy_n namely_o about_o the_o designation_n of_o the_o particular_a and_o special_a time_n consecrate_v to_o god_n worship_n whither_o it_o be_v comprehend_v and_o prescribe_v in_o the_o four_o commandment_n or_o depend_v upon_o the_o determination_n of_o the_o church_n the_o adversary_n confess_v a_o natural_a equity_n in_o the_o four_o commandment_n that_o some_o time_n be_v to_o be_v set_v apart_o for_o the_o service_n of_o god_n but_o indeputate_v and_o leave_v at_o large_a to_o the_o liberty_n of_o the_o church_n to_o determine_v and_o limit_v the_o special_a time_n when_o and_o how_o long_o what_o portion_n and_o proportion_n be_v to_o be_v allow_v now_o although_o you_o have_v a_o little_a touch_v upon_o this_o point_n already_o yet_o consider_v it_o be_v the_o main_a hinge_n of_o the_o whole_a matter_n in_o question_n and_o the_o main_a ground_n whereon_o the_o whole_a weight_n of_o the_o controversy_n rely_v i_o pray_v you_o a_o little_a more_o full_o to_o elucidate_v this_o point_n and_o the_o rather_o not_o only_o for_o the_o settle_n of_o my_o judgement_n but_o for_o the_o clear_n of_o our_o homily_n from_o all_o false_a interpretation_n which_o the_o adversary_n may_v make_v for_o the_o elude_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o you_o have_v observe_v out_o of_o it_o b._n your_o motion_n be_v very_o opportune_a and_o no_o less_o important_a for_o the_o adversary_n do_v the_o more_o easy_o play_v fast_o and_o loose_a in_o the_o mist_n of_o his_o generality_n while_n though_o he_o can_v or_o dare_v not_o for_o shame_v utter_o deny_v the_o morality_n of_o the_o four_o commandment_n which_o all_o divine_n do_v hold_v yet_o he_o deny_v appoint_v his_o own_o worship_n and_o service_n so_o the_o time_n wherein_o he_o will_v be_v serve_v this_o god_n himself_o command_v in_o the_o four_o commandment_n now_o as_o the_o king_n will_v not_o take_v it_o well_o that_o any_o meddle_v with_o his_o prerogative_n and_o arrogate_v that_o to_o himself_o which_o be_v the_o king_n right_a so_o god_n be_v just_o offend_v when_o man_n presume_v to_o assume_v to_o themselves_o that_o power_n which_o be_v proper_a and_o peculiar_a to_o god_n alone_o if_o any_o will_v take_v upon_o he_o to_o coin_v money_n by_o counterfeit_n the_o king_n stamp_n and_o name_n his_o act_n be_v treason_n how_o then_o shall_v they_o escape_v if_o presume_v to_o coin_v what_o time_n they_o please_v for_o god_n solemn_a worship_n though_o they_o set_v the_o counterfeit_a stamp_n of_o god_n upon_o it_o now_o the_o sabbath_n day_n be_v of_o the_o lord_n own_o make_v and_o stamp_v and_o therefore_o call_v the_o lord_n day_n a_o three_o reason_n why_o it_o be_v not_o leave_v in_o man_n power_n to_o institute_v the_o solemn_a day_n of_o god_n worship_n his_o sabbath_n day_n or_o to_o appoint_v he_o what_o proportion_n of_o time_n they_o four_o commandment_n prescribe_v no_o set_v sacred_a time_n or_o day_n for_o rest_n and_o sanctification_n it_o be_v a_o mere_a nullity_n for_o to_o say_v there_o be_v a_o natural_a equity_n in_o it_o for_o some_o sufficient_a and_o convenient_a time_n and_o yet_o no_o man_n can_v define_v what_o this_o sufficient_a and_o convenient_a time_n be_v nay_o all_o the_o wit_n and_o head_n in_o the_o world_n put_v together_o be_v not_o able_a to_o determine_v it_o be_v as_o to_o say_v there_o be_v a_o world_n in_o the_o moon_n consist_v of_o land_n and_o sea_n and_o inhabitant_n because_o there_o be_v some_o black_a spot_n in_o it_o which_o yet_o be_v not_o a_o more_o lunatic_n opinion_n then_o that_o be_v presumptuous_a and_o absurd_a have_v not_o the_o profane_a world_n find_v by_o woeful_a experience_n &_o that_o of_o late_a day_n within_o these_o two_o year_n last_o pass_v wherein_o man_n have_v take_v a_o liberty_n to_o profane_v and_o pollute_v but_o a_o part_n of_o the_o lord_n day_n that_o this_o be_v a_o most_o horrible_a sin_n and_o a_o sin_n it_o can_v be_v but_o as_o a_o breach_n of_o one_o of_o god_n holy_a commandment_n for_o where_o there_o be_v no_o law_n there_o be_v no_o transgression_n the_o profanation_n i_o say_v of_o the_o lord_n day_n be_v clear_o show_v to_o be_v a_o horrible_a presumptuous_a sin_n and_o in_o special_a a_o bold_a breach_n of_o the_o four_o commandment_n by_o those_o many_o markable_a judgement_n of_o god_n which_o have_v fearful_o fall_v upon_o fearless_a sabbath_n breaker_n and_o that_o i_o say_v within_o these_o two_o year_n last_o pass_v the_o like_o whereof_o can_v be_v parallel_v in_o all_o the_o history_n of_o all_o the_o century_n since_o the_o apostle_n time_n which_o alone_o if_o man_n be_v not_o altogether_o possess_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o stupidity_n and_o of_o a_o croce_v conscience_n be_v sufficient_a to_o teach_v their_o dull_a wit_n that_o the_o four_o commandment_n be_v still_o in_o force_n command_v the_o sabbath_n day_n to_o be_v sanctify_v the_o profanation_n whereof_o we_o see_v so_o terrible_o punish_v by_o divine_a revenge_n a_o point_n also_o which_o our_o homily_n have_v note_v which_o be_v sufficient_a to_o admonish_v the_o adversary_n of_o his_o presumptuous_a opposition_n thereunto_o a._n sir_n you_o have_v abundant_o satisfy_v i_o in_o this_o point_n and_o i_o suppose_v search_v better_o into_o the_o doctrine_n of_o our_o church_n so_o clear_o express_v in_o the_o homily_n b._n you_o need_v not_o wonder_v at_o it_o we_o have_v all_o know_v he_o to_o do_v as_o great_a a_o matter_n as_o that_o for_o be_v not_o his_o hand_n to_o the_o approbation_n of_o a_o book_n in_o print_n though_o afterward_o call_v in_o by_o sovereign_a authority_n which_o contain_v and_o maintayn_n many_o sundry_a tenant_n both_o pelagian_a and_o popish_a flat_a against_o the_o clear_a doctrine_n of_o our_o church_n and_o whereby_o he_o have_v as_o yet_o make_v no_o public_a recantation_n to_o remove_v the_o scandal_n from_o the_o church_n of_o england_n and_o to_o satisfy_v so_o high_a a_o offence_n give_v yea_o in_o stead_n of_o recantation_n i_o myself_o have_v hear_v he_o in_o open_a court_n speak_v against_o both_o justification_n that_o a_o man_n may_v be_v justify_v to_o day_n and_o damn_v to_o morrow_n and_o against_o election_n of_o some_o to_o eternal_a life_n and_o against_o the_o brabourne_n sanctification_n of_o the_o sabbath_n say_v i_o say_v there_o be_v no_o sanctification_n of_o the_o sabbath_n but_o rest_v rest_v only_o and_o therefore_o cease_v to_o wonder_v that_o this_o man_n shall_v be_v so_o fearless_a either_o privy_o to_o undermine_v or_o apert_o to_o oppugn_v the_o express_a doctrine_n of_o our_o church_n a._n yet_o i_o can_v rest_v yea_o from_o our_o lawful_a and_o needful_a work_n for_o like_a as_o it_o appear_v by_o this_o commandment_n that_o no_o man_n in_o the_o six_o day_n ought_v to_o be_v slothful_a or_o idle_a but_o diligent_o to_o labour_v in_o that_o state_n wherein_o god_n have_v set_v he_o even_o so_o god_n have_v give_v express_a charge_n to_o all_o man_n that_o upon_o the_o sabbath_n day_n which_o be_v now_o our_o sunday_n they_o shall_v cease_v from_o all_o weekly_a and_o work_v day_n labour_n to_o the_o intent_n that_o like_a as_o god_n himself_o wrought_v six_o day_n and_o rest_v the_o seven_o and_o bless_a and_o sanctify_v it_o and_o consecrate_v it_o to_o quietness_n and_o rest_n from_o labour_n even_o so_o god_n obedient_a people_n shall_v use_v the_o sunday_n holy_o and_o rest_n from_o their_o common_a and_o daily_a business_n and_o also_o give_v themselves_o whole_o to_o heavenly_a exercise_n of_o god_n true_a religion_n and_o service_n so_o that_o god_n do_v not_o only_o express_a commandment_n but_o also_o to_o declare_v ourselves_o to_o be_v love_a child_n in_o follow_v the_o example_n of_o our_o gracious_a lord_n and_o father_n so_o the_o homily_n and_o again_o as_o follow_v thus_o it_o may_v plain_o appear_v that_o god_n will_v and_o commandment_n be_v to_o have_v a_o solemn_a time_n and_o stand_a day_n in_o the_o week_n wherein_o the_o people_n shall_v come_v together_o and_o have_v in_o remembrance_n his_o wonderful_a benefit_n and_o to_o render_v he_o thanks_o for_o they_o as_o appertain_v to_o love_v kind_a and_o obedient_a people_n this_o
