christian_n as_o christian_n without_o relation_n to_o any_o church_n whether_o particular_a or_o universal_a and_o this_o without_o any_o extravagancy_n his_o second_o proposition_n that_o every_o one_o be_v bind_v to_o join_v in_o communion_n with_o the_o establish_a national_a church_n to_o which_o he_o belong_v suppose_v there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o term_n of_o its_o communion_n that_o render_v it_o unlawful_a for_o he_o so_o to_o do_v this_o he_o say_v be_v plain_a because_o external_a communion_n can_v be_v have_v with_o the_o catholic_n church_n but_o by_o external_o communion_n they_o be_v charge_v with_o schism_n the_o reason_n why_o they_o thus_o separate_v and_o refuse_v communion_n be_v because_o they_o can_v have_v it_o with_o they_o i_o say_v they_o can_v have_v it_o because_o they_o can_v or_o ought_v not_o to_o sin_n or_o to_o speak_v modest_o because_o they_o can_v do_v such_o thing_n which_o they_o extreme_o suspect_v to_o be_v sinful_a and_o if_o they_o do_v but_o strong_o suspect_v they_o it_o be_v enough_o for_o no_o man_n can_v be_v bind_v to_o act_v against_o a_o doubt_a conscience_n and_o herein_o i_o have_v the_o suffrage_n of_o the_o apostle_n which_o every_o good_a christian_n ought_v much_o to_o prefer_v before_o any_o other_o who_o may_v presume_v to_o philosophize_v to_o the_o contrary_a who_o say_v rom._n 14._o he_o that_o be_v minister_n either_o they_o suspect_v the_o sinfulness_n of_o admit_v a_o re-ordination_a or_o of_o abjure_v or_o of_o assent_v and_o consent_v to_o the_o use_n of_o all_o and_o every_o part_n of_o the_o liturgy_n and_o therein_o of_o every_o ceremony_n now_o this_o i_o say_v though_o the_o friend_n of_o these_o imposition_n shall_v with_o the_o high_a confidence_n affirm_v the_o lawfulness_n of_o they_o all_o yea_o and_o endeavour_v with_o a_o thousand_o argument_n to_o prove_v they_o such_o yet_o if_o those_o minister_n herein_o concern_v upon_o a_o serious_a weigh_v of_o these_o argument_n find_v they_o too_o light_a and_o after_o much_o prayer_n to_o god_n for_o a_o resolution_n yet_o find_v themselves_o to_o doubt_n in_o this_o case_n they_o ought_v not_o upon_o the_o apostle_n rule_v now_o name_v to_o yield_v to_o any_o such_o imposition_n against_o their_o doubt_a conscience_n if_o it_o be_v here_o reply_v why_o do_v they_o not_o then_o degrade_v themselves_o or_o quiet_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v degrade_v of_o their_o ministry_n and_o in_o the_o condition_n of_o private_a christian_n communicate_v with_o this_o church_n for_o so_o they_o may_v do_v and_o free_v themselves_o from_o these_o imposition_n it_o will_v be_v answer_v that_o this_o be_v a_o imposition_n they_o suspect_v as_o sinful_a as_o the_o rest_n for_o so_o long_o as_o they_o be_v persuade_v that_o their_o mission_n be_v original_o from_o christ_n they_o can_v believe_v that_o it_o be_v either_o in_o their_o own_o power_n or_o in_o the_o power_n of_o any_o other_o inferior_a to_o christ_n to_o give_v they_o a_o discharge_n from_o execute_v this_o their_o office_n except_o it_o be_v for_o heresy_n or_o obstinate_a scandal_n against_o some_o know_a law_n of_o christ_n and_o then_o indeed_o christ_n have_v leave_v a_o order_n not_o only_o for_o exclude_v they_o from_o their_o office_n but_o also_o from_o the_o church_n but_o neither_o of_o these_o latter_a be_v in_o the_o least_o pretend_a and_o therefore_o it_o be_v they_o can_v without_o suspicion_n of_o sin_n either_o degrade_v themselves_o or_o quiet_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v degrade_v and_o still_o i_o add_v if_o any_o reason_n be_v urge_v for_o the_o lawfulness_n of_o this_o degradation_n but_o such_o that_o be_v short_a of_o their_o conviction_n so_o that_o still_o they_o doubt_v it_o will_v continue_v yet_o their_o duty_n to_o serve_v the_o church_n as_o minister_n and_o not_o to_o listen_v themselves_o among_o private_a christian_n as_o be_v advise_v if_o it_o be_v ask_v but_o may_v not_o supreme_a magistrate_n if_o they_o can_v divest_v minister_n of_o their_o office_n may_v not_o they_o within_o their_o dominion_n suspend_v some_o of_o they_o from_o the_o exercise_n thereof_o when_o they_o conceive_v it_o be_v for_o the_o peace_n of_o the_o rest_n it_o will_v be_v answer_v that_o that_o lord_n of_o lord_n who_o give_v the_o office_n and_o the_o commission_n and_o have_v by_o divers_a providence_n design_v the_o man_n thereto_o have_v certain_o with_o the_o office_n design_v they_o to_o the_o exercise_n thereof_o for_o else_o very_o the_o christ_n and_o impose_v they_o on_o minister_n as_o condition_n to_o be_v obey_v without_o which_o they_o will_v restrain_v they_o the_o exercise_n of_o their_o ministry_n as_o be_v disturber_n of_o the_o peace_n in_o such_o a_o case_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o such_o minister_n may_v continue_v to_o preach_v according_a to_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n but_o be_v restrain_v only_o by_o the_o law_n of_o man_n while_o then_o their_o conscience_n lie_v under_o a_o superior_a obligation_n to_o preach_v than_o that_o by_o which_o they_o be_v restrain_v from_o preach_v it_o be_v casie_a to_o conceive_v what_o they_o will_v or_o aught_o to_o do_v i._n e._n whether_o they_o will_v or_o aught_o to_o obey_v god_n or_o man_n if_o it_o be_v say_v such_o minister_n be_v mistake_v about_o the_o nature_n of_o such_o impose_v law_n as_o if_o they_o be_v different_a from_o or_o contrary_a to_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n when_o they_o be_v no_o other_o but_o what_o christ_n have_v entrust_v they_o with_o a_o power_n of_o appoint_v for_o the_o peace_n of_o his_o church_n it_o will_v be_v still_o answer_v that_o this_o people_n be_v persuade_v of_o the_o contrary_a and_o that_o christ_n eat_v be_v damn_v so_o that_o from_o the_o whole_a it_o be_v evident_a the_o reason_n why_o these_o minister_n can_v conform_v and_o why_o they_o yet_o continue_v to_o preach_v be_v because_o they_o can_v do_v the_o one_o nor_o forbear_v the_o other_o without_o sin_n which_o be_v a_o just_a ground_n of_o their_o separation_n and_o of_o persevere_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o their_o ministry_n and_o therefore_o separation_n in_o this_o case_n as_o to_o they_o be_v no_o schism_n some_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o say_v but_o what_o be_v all_o this_o to_o the_o common_a people_n they_o be_v schismatic_n without_o doubt_n for_o they_o have_v no_o such_o imposition_n upon_o they_o it_o may_v be_v answer_v that_o if_o the_o minister_n now_o name_v be_v yet_o true_a minister_n of_o jesus_n then_o they_o may_v preach_v it_o can_v be_v unlawful_a for_o the_o people_n to_o hear_v they_o no_o nor_o to_o partake_v of_o any_o ordinance_n from_o they_o which_o as_o minister_v they_o may_v administer_v yet_o again_o multitude_n of_o the_o people_n do_v own_v they_o as_o christ_n minister_n and_o do_v join_v with_o they_o in_o all_o ordinance_n as_o such_o and_o this_o for_o several_a year_n together_o and_o certain_o during_o those_o time_n they_o can_v not_o be_v esteem_v schismatic_n for_o so_o do_v since_o there_o be_v no_o other_o minister_n ordinary_o to_o be_v find_v if_o then_o they_o be_v no_o schismatic_n how_o come_v they_o to_o be_v so_o since_o if_o it_o be_v say_v the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n make_v they_o such_o it_o may_v be_v answer_v that_o since_o schism_n of_o which_o we_o speak_v be_v a_o sin_n peculiar_a and_o proper_a to_o a_o church_n it_o be_v a_o wonder_n how_o a_o law_n of_o a_o land_n that_o be_v perfect_o extraneous_a to_o a_o church_n can_v make_v that_o at_o one_o time_n a_o schism_n which_o at_o another_o time_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v such_o nor_o do_v i_o think_v that_o those_o that_o now_o think_v themselves_o the_o church_n and_o that_o all_o that_o separate_v from_o they_o be_v schismatic_n in_o case_n they_o have_v a_o law_n of_o the_o land_n to_o establish_v presbytery_n or_o independency_n or_o anabaptistry_n will_v conceive_v of_o themselves_o as_o schismatic_n if_o they_o continue_v in_o that_o way_n they_o be_v in_o and_o refuse_v to_o hold_v communion_n with_o that_o the_o law_n establish_v and_o in_o truth_n i_o can_v possible_o conceive_v how_o that_o may_v be_v say_v just_o to_o day_n that_o it_o be_v no_o schism_n and_o yet_o to_o morrow_n it_o may_v be_v just_o call_v so_o mere_o because_o of_o a_o intervening_a humane_a law_n last_o as_o for_o the_o people_n it_o may_v be_v further_o answer_v that_o though_o they_o be_v not_o under_o the_o same_o imposition_n as_o their_o minister_n be_v yet_o they_o be_v not_o altogether_o free_a from_o imposition_n which_o they_o extreme_o suspect_v as_o sinful_a as_o that_o they_o can_v enjoy_v baptism_n for_o their_o child_n without_o the_o cross_n nor_o receive_v the_o lord_n supper_n without_o kneel_v to_o name_n no_o more_o if_o you_o say_v these_o be_v not_o sinful_a it_o be_v answer_v suppose_v they_o be_v not_o yet_o in_o case_n they_o suspect_v they_o vehement_o as_o such_o and_o all_o your_o argument_n can_v resolve_v their_o doubt_n it_o be_v evident_a they_o will_v go_v against_o and_o wound_v their_o conscience_n in_o case_n they_o shall_v submit_v to_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o if_o therefore_o these_o people_n shall_v for_o these_o reason_n join_v with_o those_o minister_n in_o all_o ordinance_n i_o see_v no_o ground_n to_o charge_v this_o people_n with_o schism_n no_o more_o than_o their_o minister_n thus_o have_v with_o as_o much_o brevity_n as_o i_o can_v state_v the_o case_n and_o cause_n of_o this_o people_n we_o shall_v now_o come_v to_o take_v a_o account_n of_o mr._n j._n s._n his_o sermon_n before_o the_o mayor_n which_o contain_v a_o impeachment_n of_o schism_n and_o a_o pretend_a proof_n in_o a_o secondary_a sense_n for_o individual_a believer_n so_o that_o it_o seem_v to_o follow_v that_o none_o can_v be_v true_a christian_n or_o in_o a_o salvable_a state_n but_o as_o they_o be_v consider_v incorporate_v into_o and_o so_o make_v one_o of_o this_o church_n so_o that_o church-member-ship_n be_v essential_a to_o they_o if_o this_o i_o say_v be_v your_o meaning_n then_o give_v i_o leave_v to_o take_v the_o boldness_n to_o deny_v the_o proposition_n for_o i_o can_v understand_v that_o a_o christian_a as_o such_o include_v any_o essential_a relation_n to_o a_o church_n in_o your_o sense_n that_o i_o may_v clear_v up_o this_o matter_n a_o little_a give_v i_o leave_v to_o tell_v you_o that_o this_o term_n christian_n may_v fall_v under_o divers_a consideration_n as_o church_n may_v be_v regular_a and_o schismatical_a in_o their_o turn_n last_o when_o you_o say_v no_o communion_n may_v just_o be_v with_o draw_v from_o but_o when_o it_o can_v be_v continue_v without_o the_o commission_n of_o sin_n here_o again_o i_o desire_v to_o know_v whether_o by_o sin_n you_o mean_v such_o that_o may_v be_v evidence_v to_o be_v such_o to_o the_o conviction_n of_o the_o imposer_n or_o only_o such_o that_o be_v evidence_v to_o the_o conviction_n of_o the_o conscience_n of_o those_o that_o withdraw_v you_o can_v in_o reareason_n require_v the_o first_o except_o you_o will_v run_v y_o ourselves_o upon_o these_o strait_n either_o to_o turn_v papist_n or_o undertake_v to_o convince_v the_o papist_n that_o the_o reason_n why_o you_o come_v off_o from_o they_o and_o their_o worship_n be_v because_o you_o can_v not_o communicate_v with_o they_o therein_o without_o sin_n we_o know_v you_o tell_v they_o so_o and_o give_v your_o reason_n why_o you_o say_v so_o but_o notwithstanding_o all_o you_o say_v they_o be_v not_o convince_v but_o yet_o persist_v to_o call_v you_o schismatic_n but_o what_o then_o be_v you_o move_v with_o their_o censure_n no_o for_o if_o your_o reason_n will_v not_o convince_v they_o yet_o they_o satisfy_v your_o own_o conscience_n and_o therein_o you_o rest_v and_o so_o you_o may_v very_o reasonable_o do_v i_o desire_v now_o rule_n if_o lawful_a than_o it_o can_v be_v imagine_v how_o their_o be_v command_v can_v make_v they_o unlawful_a so_o that_o in_o this_o case_n there_o be_v no_o sin_n in_o yield_a obedience_n and_o consequent_o no_o just_a cause_n of_o withdraw_a our_o communion_n this_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o what_o he_o have_v say_v to_o this_o first_o case_n my_o answer_n be_v this_o i_o wonder_v which_o of_o his_o dissenter_n give_v he_o ground_n to_o suppose_v that_o ever_o any_o of_o they_o take_v unscriptural_a imposition_n for_o such_o thing_n that_o be_v neither_o command_v nor_o forbid_v by_o any_o general_n or_o special_a rule_n in_o scripture_n if_o thus_o you_o care_v not_o upon_o what_o sandy_a premise_n you_o build_v your_o conclusion_n who_o can_v help_v it_o but_o i_o pray_v be_v christian_n of_o the_o liberty_n of_o enjoy_v gospel_n ordinance_n or_o the_o privilege_n of_o a_o visible_a church_n state_n by_o the_o censure_n of_o excommunication_n which_o be_v thing_n that_o be_v not_o either_o command_v or_o direct_o forbid_v in_o scripture_n in_o any_o express_a term_n for_o we_o confess_v that_o there_o be_v not_o the_o word_n surplice_n or_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n etc._n etc._n so_o much_o as_o name_v in_o scripture_n and_o upon_o this_o account_n we_o allow_v they_o the_o name_n of_o unscriptural_a but_o we_o say_v moreover_o that_o the_o religious_a use_n of_o these_o thing_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o much_o more_o the_o imposition_n of_o they_o as_o necessary_a condition_n of_o communion_n be_v against_o general_a rule_n and_o instance_n in_o the_o like_o kind_a dis-allowed_n in_o scripture_n from_o whence_o we_o by_o deduction_n gather_v the_o unlawfulnesse_n and_o sinfulness_n thereof_o and_o upon_o this_o latter_a consideration_n i_o call_v they_o antiscriptural_a as_o be_v
communion_n with_o a_o church_n of_o which_o we_o be_v member_n where_o we_o may_v continue_v without_o sin_n i_o answer_v whatever_o may_v be_v think_v of_o this_o position_n i_o be_o persuade_v that_o the_o reason_n annex_v be_v too_o weak_a to_o bear_v the_o weight_n of_o it_o for_o the_o reason_n suppose_v that_o which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v suppose_v that_o be_v to_o say_v that_o to_o positive_a and_o therefore_o subordinate_a to_o law_n more_o natural_a and_o necessary_a such_o be_v that_o wherein_o we_o be_v command_v to_o take_v care_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o salvation_n so_o that_o if_o christian_n do_v shift_v particular_a church_n for_o the_o obtain_n of_o very_o apparent_a advantage_n to_o their_o salvation_n above_o what_o they_o can_v have_v have_v where_o they_o their_o conviction_n and_o real_a conversion_n i_o dare_v say_v it_o will_v be_v a_o very_a hard_a task_n to_o convince_v such_o of_o the_o sin_n of_o separation_n in_o so_o do_v i_o have_v much_o wonder_v that_o man_n shall_v think_v it_o but_o reasonable_a that_o every_o man_n shall_v be_v permit_v to_o choose_v his_o own_o physician_n and_o who_o will_v blame_v one_o that_o be_v sickly_a if_o he_o wave_a the_o advice_n of_o his_o neighbour_n though_o a_o physician_n shall_v apply_v himself_o to_o the_o most_o skilful_a and_o successful_a that_o he_o can_v hear_v of_o for_o his_o health_n &_o yet_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v account_v so_o criminal_a to_o use_v the_o same_o care_n for_o a_o man_n salvation_n and_o what_o though_o the_o physician_n i_o speak_v of_o be_v not_o of_o the_o college_n nor_o can_v be_v suffer_v to_o be_v thereof_o because_o perhaps_o he_o will_v not_o swear_v to_o the_o truth_n of_o all_o the_o aphorism_n of_o hypocrates_n or_o the_o truth_n of_o all_o and_o every_o part_n of_o the_o college_n dispensation_n who_o think_v you_o will_v stand_v upon_o such_o a_o nicety_n if_o he_o yet_o believe_v he_o exceed_o skilful_a and_o successful_a in_o the_o cure_n of_o such_o distemper_n under_o which_o he_o groan_v and_o certain_o when_o you_o have_v write_v yourself_o a_o weary_a to_o prove_v the_o contrary_a yet_o man_n herein_o will_v follow_v the_o conduct_n of_o their_o reason_n and_o the_o instinct_n of_o self-preservation_n which_o be_v not_o only_o see_v verify_v among_o the_o nonconformist_n but_o among_o yourselves_o what_o else_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o some_o of_o your_o own_o church_n be_v throng_v with_o auditor_n when_o in_o other_o the_o people_n sit_v thin_o scatter_v like_o the_o glean_n oft_o harvest_n and_o i_o think_v it_o almost_o as_o easy_a to_o stop_v the_o sun_n in_o its_o course_n or_o the_o sea_n in_o its_o flow_n as_o to_o prevent_v these_o concourse_n of_o the_o people_n to_o such_o minister_n profitable_a ministry_n in_o another_o the_o next_o thing_n to_o be_v examine_v be_v that_o which_o you_o have_v say_v concern_v the_o unlawfullness_n of_o for_o sake_z one_o church_n to_o enjoy_v a_o more_o pure_a discipline_n in_o a_o other_o to_o this_o i_o say_v it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o a_o regular_a execution_n of_o church_n discipline_n as_o it_o be_v ordain_v by_o christ_n for_o great_a end_n so_o when_o so_o execute_v it_o be_v find_v of_o very_o great_a use_n and_o benefit_n to_o the_o church_n for_o thereby_o be_v there_o a_o mean_n provide_v to_o inform_v the_o ignorant_o sin_v member_n to_o correct_v the_o wilful_a to_o reclaim_v apostate_n to_o establish_v and_o confirm_v the_o sound_n that_o their_o soul_n may_v be_v save_v in_o the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n christ_n and_o certain_o a_o neglect_n of_o this_o discipline_n must_v be_v a_o very_a dangerous_a consequence_n to_o a_o church_n and_o to_o the_o salvation_n of_o its_o member_n and_o therefore_o if_o christian_n withdraw_v from_o such_o a_o church_n where_o this_o discipline_n be_v next_o to_o whole_o neglect_v to_o join_v with_o another_o where_o it_o be_v exercise_v to_o the_o great_a advantage_n of_o its_o member_n i_o see_v no_o sin_n therein_o as_o this_o author_n imagine_v for_o shall_v i_o say_v the_o law_n of_o self-preservation_n be_v superior_a to_o the_o law_n of_o visible_a union_n to_o a_o particular_a church_n and_o therefore_o must_v first_o be_v obey_v may_v parent_n lawful_o change_v a_o school_n for_o their_o child_n where_o the_o scholar_n by_o connivance_n be_v suffer_v to_o curse_n and_o swear_v etc._n etc._n and_o yet_o be_v keep_v in_o the_o school_n especial_o if_o great_a man_n child_n perhaps_o some_o poor_a man_n child_n for_o some_o one_o of_o these_o sin_n may_v now_o and_o then_o be_v cast_v out_o but_o readmit_v upon_o very_o slender_a satisfaction_n i_o say_v may_v parent_n in_o this_o case_n tender_v the_o soul_n of_o their_o child_n remove_v they_o to_o another_o and_o yet_o be_v blameless_a i_o wonder_v then_o why_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o criminal_a for_o a_o christian_n to_o remove_v from_o such_o a_o church_n where_o such_o sin_n be_v in_o like_a manner_n tolerate_v for_o the_o benefit_n of_o a_o better_o discipline_v church_n true_o if_o learning_n be_v as_o necessary_a as_o christianity_n and_o if_o no_o other_o school_n can_v be_v have_v it_o be_v better_o their_o child_n to_o be_v keep_v in_o such_o a_o school_n than_o to_o be_v suffer_v to_o run_v about_o the_o street_n to_o their_o more_o certain_a ruin_n for_o the_o rule_n of_o practice_n to_o every_o christian_a in_o this_o case_n be_v of_o two_o evil_n to_o choose_v the_o least_o but_o as_o thing_n stand_v with_o we_o in_o england_n there_o be_v more_o pure_a discipline_v church_n to_o be_v have_v and_o therefore_o no_o christian_a can_v be_v think_v to_o be_v in_o such_o strait_n if_o you_o say_v these_o more_o pure_a discipline_v church_n be_v irregular_a as_o not_o have_v the_o establishment_n of_o a_o humane_a law_n i_o answer_v it_o be_v not_o necessary_a for_o the_o constitution_n of_o church_n and_o their_o establishment_n be_v found_v on_o a_o law_n of_o christ_n and_o not_o on_o humane_a law_n christ_n minister_n have_v a_o right_a to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n and_o gather_v church_n and_o govern_v they_o by_o his_o rule_n without_o the_o leave_n of_o any_o magistrate_n the_o power_n of_o the_o earth_n may_v be_v nurse_n father_n to_o the_o church_n but_o as_o such_o they_o neither_o give_v they_o their_o be_v or_o constitution_n when_o christ_n send_v the_o first_o preacher_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o discipline_n nation_n and_o gather_v to_o he_o church_n he_o do_v not_o direct_v they_o first_o to_o ask_v the_o governor_n of_o those_o nation_n leave_v so_o to_o do_v for_o his_o own_o commission_n be_v warrant_v sufficient_a without_o their_o licence_n but_o when_o god_n be_v please_v rule_n of_o christ_n and_o if_o those_o of_o the_o nonconformist_n prove_v such_o i_o know_v not_o why_o any_o shall_v be_v blame_v for_o join_v with_o they_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o their_o
