be_v observe_v in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n and_o this_o do_v seem_v to_o i_o to_o be_v the_o true_a distinction_n in_o this_o matter_n betwixt_o the_o protestant_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n and_o the_o rigid_a puritan_n that_o the_o protestant_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n assert_n the_o holy_a scripture_n to_o be_v a_o full_a and_o perfect_a rule_n of_o all_o the_o article_n of_o christian_a faith_n and_o christian_a piety_n but_o notwithstanding_o he_o maintain_v that_o holy_a scripture_n have_v leave_v it_o in_o the_o power_n of_o the_o church_n governor_n sacred_a and_o civil_a to_o appoint_v such_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n to_o be_v use_v in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n as_o they_o shall_v judge_v convenient_a and_o conduce_v to_o the_o end_n of_o unity_n and_o order_n peace_n and_o love_n decency_n uniformity_n and_o the_o edification_n of_o the_o church_n and_o that_o by_o virtue_n of_o these_o general_n rule_v follow_v after_o the_o thing_n 14.40_o rom._n 14.19_o phil._n 3.16_o 1_o cor._n 14.40_o which_o make_v for_o peace_n and_o whereby_o we_o may_v edify_v one_o another_o let_v we_o walk_v by_o the_o same_o rule_n let_v we_o mind_n the_o same_o thing_n let_v all_o thing_n be_v do_v decent_o and_o in_o order_n let_v all_o be_v do_v to_o edification_n and_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n give_v no_o offence_n to_o jew_n or_o gentile_n or_o to_o the_o church_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n they_o in_o the_o general_n be_v authorise_v to_o appoint_v such_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n as_o they_o judge_v most_o conduce_v to_o these_o end_n and_o that_o all_o christian_a people_n who_o live_v under_o their_o care_n and_o jurisdiction_n be_v bind_v to_o yield_v obedience_n to_o they_o in_o matter_n of_o this_o nature_n by_o virtue_n the_o command_n of_o man_n so_o that_o in_o scripture_n some_o express_a for_o they_o may_v be_v find_v but_o that_o it_o be_v not_o such_o a_o rule_n of_o indifferent_a ceremony_n 2_o that_o it_o be_v as_o perfect_v a_o rule_n as_o it_o need_v to_o be_v in_o reference_n to_o ceremony_n uncommand_v in_o particular_a 1_o by_o give_v we_o the_o general_a rule_n which_o shall_v direct_v superior_n in_o the_o impose_v of_o these_o thing_n indifrent_a but_o not_o in_o a_o particular_a prescription_n of_o they_o as_o this_o objection_n do_v suppose_v it_o be_v a_o plain_a contradiction_n that_o any_o thing_n shall_v be_v to_o we_o indifferent_a and_o yet_o prescribe_v to_o we_o in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n dissenter_n therefore_o must_v deny_v that_o there_o be_v any_o circumstance_n of_o worship_n be_v it_o time_n place_n gesture_n or_o the_o word_n in_o which_o it_o be_v to_o be_v perform_v leave_v indifferent_a or_o that_o be_v so_o that_o circumstance_n must_v not_o be_v use_v in_o god_n worship_n or_o else_o they_o must_v confess_v the_o weakness_n of_o the_o argument_n produce_v and_o 2_o because_o it_o do_v command_v we_o to_o obey_v superior_n civil_a and_o sacred_a in_o only_o expressive_a of_o our_o faith_n and_o duty_n and_o under_o this_o head_n may_v be_v comprise_v kneel_v at_o the_o sacrament_n as_o a_o expression_n of_o our_o inward_a reverence_n and_o sign_v with_o the_o cross_n as_o a_o expression_n of_o our_o faith_n in_o and_o own_v of_o the_o crucify_a jesus_n sign_n arbitrary_a be_v such_o as_o neither_o of_o themselves_o nor_o yet_o by_o any_o antecedent_n custom_n do_v signify_v distincty_n and_o determinate_o to_o other_o that_o which_o they_o be_v institute_v or_o impose_v to_o teach_v or_o signify_v such_o be_v the_o element_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n for_o the_o break_n of_o bread_n do_v no_o more_o natural_o signify_v the_o break_n of_o christ_n body_n on_o the_o cross_n than_o the_o break_n of_o any_o other_o thing_n will_v do_v and_o such_o be_v all_o the_o moral_a signification_n of_o the_o rite_n appoint_v by_o the_o jewish_a law_n concern_v clean_a beast_n for_o sacrifice_n and_o unclean_a forbid_v to_o be_v profitable_a use_n in_o his_o service_n for_o as_o vain_a thought_n and_o word_n be_v forbid_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n so_o be_v it_o not_o to_o be_v doubt_v but_o that_o vain_a action_n be_v forbid_v especial_o in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n answ_n 1_o to_o give_v a_o satisfactory_a answer_n unto_o this_o objection_n it_o will_v be_v only_o necessary_a to_o state_n the_o notion_n or_o true_a import_n of_o superstition_n that_o by_o apply_v it_o to_o our_o own_o practice_n and_o to_o the_o practice_n of_o dissenter_n we_o may_v judge_v who_o be_v most_o guilty_a of_o this_o vice_n 1._o therefore_o superstition_n be_v a_o species_n of_o false_a worship_n whereby_o we_o do_v exhibit_v worship_n to_o a_o object_n to_o which_o it_o be_v not_o due_a or_o to_o that_o object_n which_o deserve_v worship_n in_o a_o undue_a manner_n it_o follow_v plain_o that_o where_o no_o worship_n be_v exhibit_v by_o the_o act_n do_v or_o intend_v by_o the_o doer_n or_o imposer_n of_o the_o act_n there_o can_v be_v no_o superstition_n in_o the_o exercise_n of_o such_o a_o act_n there_o may_v be_v vanity_n and_o a_o abuse_n of_o power_n in_o the_o impose_v rite_n unprofitable_a and_o unnecessary_a but_o there_o can_v be_v no_o superstition_n or_o will_v worship_n where_o there_o be_v neither_o any_o act_n of_o worship_n nor_o any_o will_n to_o worship_n god_n by_o the_o performance_n of_o these_o rite_n nor_o designation_n of_o they_o unto_o such_o a_o end_n 2_o superstitious_a worship_n undue_a as_o to_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o can_v only_o be_v perform_v by_o offer_v that_o as_o acceptable_a and_o please_v to_o god_n or_o as_o a_o exercise_n of_o religion_n and_o honour_n to_o god_n or_o a_o acknowledgement_n of_o some_o of_o his_o perfection_n which_o be_v not_o acceptable_a or_o well_o please_v to_o he_o which_o render_v he_o no_o honour_n and_o do_v not_o tend_v to_o the_o acknowledgement_n of_o any_o of_o his_o attribute_n or_o perfection_n for_o by_o perform_v that_o which_o indeed_o be_v please_v and_o acceptable_a to_o god_n or_o which_o do_v render_v honour_n to_o he_o we_o can_v be_v superstitious_a hence_o it_o must_v follow_v that_o when_o man_n make_v those_o thing_n a_o part_n of_o their_o religion_n which_o god_n have_v not_o command_v or_o forbid_v and_o think_v god_n be_v please_v with_o their_o mere_a do_v or_o abstain_v from_o do_v they_o they_o in_o so_o do_v must_v be_v superstitious_a two_o thing_n be_v therefore_o necessary_a to_o complete_a this_o species_n of_o false_a worship_n viz._n 1._o that_o the_o matter_n about_o which_o it_o be_v conversant_a relate_v to_o the_o do_v some_o suppose_a religious_a act_n that_o be_v some_o act_n of_o service_n acceptable_a and_o well_o please_v to_o god_n and_o which_o direct_o tend_v unto_o his_o honour_n 2_o that_o he_o who_o do_v it_o do_v real_o mistake_v in_o judge_v such_o a_o action_n to_o be_v indeed_o religious_a and_o tend_v to_o his_o honour_n and_o therefore_o acceptable_a to_o he_o 3_o all_o superstition_n consist_v fundamental_o in_o this_o mistake_n and_o formal_o in_o the_o ensue_a practice_n thereupon_o it_o must_v with_o equal_a reason_n be_v conclude_v that_o the_o forbearance_n of_o a_o act_n upon_o the_o like_a mistake_n viz._n that_o we_o conceive_v it_o well_o please_v to_o god_n and_o tend_v to_o his_o honour_n to_o forbear_v it_o when_o indeed_o it_o be_v not_o so_o be_v superstition_n because_o by_o that_o forbearance_n we_o equal_o design_v to_o please_v and_o honour_n god_n and_o do_v it_o as_o undue_o
lawful_o submit_v to_o the_o institution_n §_o 7_o or_o introduction_n of_o new_a sacrament_n into_o the_o church_n of_o god_n or_o use_v they_o be_v introduce_v without_o divine_a institution_n for_o
