worship_n and_o the_o doctrine_n and_o article_n of_o faith_n these_o thing_n must_v be_v handle_v each_o distinct_o that_o so_o the_o whole_a matter_n of_o toleration_n may_v the_o more_o clear_o be_v understand_v concern_v outward_a worship_n i_o say_v in_o the_o first_o place_n that_o the_o magistrate_n have_v no_o power_n to_o enforce_v by_o law_n either_o in_o his_o own_o church_n or_o much_o less_o in_o another_o the_o use_n of_o any_o rite_n or_o ceremony_n whatsoever_o in_o the_o worship_n of_o god._n and_o this_o not_o only_o because_o these_o church_n be_v free_a society_n but_o because_o whatsoever_o be_v practise_v in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n be_v only_o so_o far_o justifiable_a as_o it_o be_v believe_v by_o those_o that_o practise_v it_o to_o be_v acceptable_a unto_o he_o whatsoever_o be_v not_o do_v with_o that_o assurance_n of_o faith_n be_v neither_o well_o in_o itself_o nor_o can_v it_o be_v acceptable_a to_o god._n to_o impose_v such_o thing_n therefore_o upon_o any_o people_n contrary_a to_o their_o own_o judgement_n be_v in_o effect_n to_o command_v they_o to_o offend_v god_n which_o consider_v that_o the_o end_n of_o all_o religion_n be_v to_o please_v he_o and_o that_o liberty_n be_v essential_o necessary_a to_o that_o end_n appear_v to_o be_v absurd_a beyond_o expression_n but_o perhaps_o it_o may_v be_v conclude_v from_o hence_o that_o i_o deny_v unto_o the_o magistrate_n all_o manner_n of_o power_n about_o indifferent_a thing_n which_o if_o it_o be_v not_o grant_v the_o whole_a subject-matter_n of_o law-making_a be_v take_v away_o no_o i_o ready_o grant_v that_o indifferent_a thing_n and_o perhaps_o none_o but_o such_o be_v subject_v to_o the_o legislative_a power_n but_o it_o do_v not_o therefore_o follow_v that_o the_o magistrate_n may_v ordain_v whatsoever_o he_o please_v concern_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v indifferent_a the_o public_a good_a be_v the_o rule_n and_o measure_n of_o all_o law-making_a if_o a_o thing_n be_v not_o useful_a to_o the_o commonwealth_n though_o it_o it_o be_v never_o so_o indifferent_a it_o may_v not_o present_o be_v establish_v by_o law._n and_o further_o thing_n never_o so_o indifferent_a in_o their_o own_o nature_n when_o they_o be_v bring_v into_o the_o church_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n be_v remove_v out_o of_o the_o reach_n of_o the_o magistrate_n jurisdiction_n because_o in_o that_o use_n they_o have_v no_o connection_n at_o all_o with_o civil_a affair_n the_o only_a business_n of_o the_o church_n be_v the_o salvation_n of_o soul_n and_o it_o no_o way_n concern_v the_o commonwealth_n or_o any_o member_n of_o it_o that_o this_o or_o the_o other_o ceremony_n be_v there_o make_v use_n of_o neither_o the_o use_v nor_o the_o omission_n of_o any_o ceremony_n in_o those_o religious_a assembly_n do_v either_o advantage_n or_o prejudice_v the_o life_n liberty_n or_o estate_n of_o any_o man._n for_o example_n let_v it_o be_v grant_v that_o the_o wash_n of_o a_o infant_n with_o water_n be_v in_o itself_o a_o indifferent_a thing_n let_v it_o be_v grant_v also_o that_o if_o the_o magistrate_n understand_v such_o wash_n to_o be_v profitable_a to_o the_o cure_n or_o prevent_v of_o any_o disease_n that_o child_n be_v subject_a unto_o and_o esteem_v the_o matter_n weighty_a enough_o to_o be_v take_v care_n of_o by_o a_o law_n in_o that_o case_n he_o may_v order_v it_o to_o be_v do_v but_o will_v any_o one_o therefore_o say_v that_o a_o magistrate_n have_v the_o same_o right_n to_o ordain_v by_o law_n that_o all_o child_n shall_v be_v baptize_v by_o priest_n in_o the_o sacred_a font_n in_o order_n to_o the_o purification_n of_o their_o soul_n the_o extreme_a difference_n of_o these_o two_o case_n be_v visible_a to_o every_o one_o at_o first_o sight_n or_o let_v we_o apply_v the_o last_o case_n to_o the_o child_n of_o a_o jew_n and_o the_o thing_n speak_v itself_o for_o what_o hinder_v but_o a_o christian_a magistrate_n may_v have_v subject_n that_o be_v jew_n now_o if_o we_o acknowledge_v that_o such_o a_o injury_n may_v not_o be_v do_v unto_o a_o jew_n as_o to_o compel_v he_o against_o his_o own_o opinion_n to_o practise_v in_o his_o religion_n a_o thing_n that_o be_v in_o its_o nature_n indifferent_a how_o can_v we_o maintain_v that_o any_o thing_n of_o this_o kind_n may_v be_v do_v to_o a_o christian_a again_o thing_n in_o their_o own_o nature_n indifferent_a can_v by_o any_o human_a authority_n be_v make_v any_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n for_o this_o very_a reason_n because_o they_o be_v indifferent_a for_o since_o indifferent_a thing_n be_v not_o capable_a by_o any_o virtue_n of_o their_o own_o to_o propitiate_v the_o deity_n no_o human_a power_n or_o authority_n can_v confer_v on_o they_o so_o much_o dignity_n and_o excellency_n as_o to_o enable_v they_o to_o do_v it_o in_o the_o common_a affair_n of_o life_n that_o use_v of_o indifferent_a thing_n which_o god_n have_v not_o forbid_v be_v free_a and_o lawful_a and_o therefore_o in_o those_o thing_n human_a authority_n have_v place_n but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o in_o matter_n of_o religion_n thing_n indifferent_a be_v not_o otherwise_o lawful_a in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n than_o as_o they_o be_v institute_v by_o god_n himself_o and_o as_o he_o by_o some_o positive_a command_n have_v ordain_v they_o to_o be_v make_v a_o part_n of_o that_o worship_n which_o he_o will_v vouchsafe_v to_o accept_v of_o at_o the_o hand_n of_o poor_a sinful_a man_n nor_o when_o a_o incense_a deity_n shall_v ask_v we_o who_o have_v require_v these_o or_o such_o like_a thing_n at_o our_o hand_n will_v it_o be_v enough_o to_o answer_v he_o that_o the_o magistrate_n command_v they_o if_o civil_a jurisdiction_n extend_v thus_o far_o what_o may_v not_o lawful_o be_v introduce_v into_o religion_n what_o hodgepodge_n of_o ceremony_n what_o superstitious_a invention_n build_v upon_o the_o magistrate_n authority_n may_v not_o against_o conscience_n be_v impose_v upon_o the_o worshipper_n of_o god_n for_o the_o great_a part_n of_o these_o ceremony_n and_o superstion_n consist_v in_o the_o religious_a use_n of_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v in_o their_o own_o nature_n indifferent_a nor_o be_v they_o sinful_a upon_o any_o other_o account_n than_o because_o god_n be_v not_o the_o author_n of_o they_o the_o sprinkle_n of_o water_n and_o the_o use_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n be_v both_o in_o their_o own_o nature_n and_o in_o the_o ordinary_a occasion_n of_o life_n altogether_o indifferent_a will_v any_o man_n therefore_o say_v that_o these_o thing_n can_v have_v be_v introduce_v into_o religion_n and_o make_v a_o part_n of_o divine_a worship_n if_o not_o by_o divine_a institution_n if_o any_o human_a authority_n or_o civil_a power_n can_v have_v do_v this_o why_o may_v it_o not_o also_o enjoin_v the_o eat_n of_o fish_n and_o drink_v of_o ale_n in_o the_o holy_a banquet_n as_o a_o part_n of_o divine_a worship_n why_o not_o the_o sprinkle_n of_o the_o blood_n of_o beast_n in_o church_n and_o expiation_n by_o water_n or_o fire_n and_o abundance_n more_o of_o this_o kind_n but_o these_o thing_n how_o indifferent_a soever_o they_o be_v in_o common_a use_n when_o they_o come_v to_o be_v annex_v unto_o divine_a worship_n without_o divine_a authority_n they_o be_v as_o abominable_a to_o god_n as_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o a_o dog._n and_o why_o a_o dog_n so_o abominable_a what_o difference_n be_v there_o between_o a_o dog_n and_o a_o goat_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n equal_o and_o infinite_o distant_a from_o all_o affinity_n with_o matter_n unless_o it_o be_v that_o god_n require_v the_o use_n of_o the_o one_o in_o his_o worship_n and_o not_o of_o the_o other_o we_o see_v therefore_o that_o indifferent_a thing_n how_o much_o soever_o they_o be_v under_o the_o power_n of_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n yet_o can_v upon_o that_o pretence_n be_v introduce_v into_o religion_n and_o impose_v upon_o religious_a assembly_n because_o in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n they_o whole_o cease_v to_o be_v indifferent_a he_o that_o worship_v god_n do_v it_o with_o design_n to_o please_v he_o and_o procure_v his_o favour_n but_o that_o can_v be_v do_v by_o he_o who_o upon_o the_o command_n of_o another_o offers_z unto_o god_n that_o which_o he_o know_v will_v be_v displease_v to_o he_o because_o not_o command_v by_o himself_o this_o be_v not_o to_o please_v god_n or_o appease_v his_o wrath_n but_o willing_o and_o know_o to_o provoke_v he_o by_o a_o manifest_a contempt_n which_o be_v a_o thing_n absolute_o repugnant_a to_o the_o nature_n and_o end_n of_o worship_n but_o it_o will_v here_o be_v ask_v if_o nothing_o belong_v to_o divine_a worship_n be_v leave_v to_o human_a discretion_n how_o be_v it_o then_o that_o church_n themselves_o have_v the_o power_n of_o order_v any_o thing_n about_o the_o time_n and_o place_n of_o worship_n
and_o the_o like_a to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o in_o religious_a worship_n we_o must_v distinguish_v between_o what_o be_v part_n of_o the_o worship_n itself_o and_o what_o be_v but_o a_o circumstance_n that_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n which_o be_v believe_v to_o be_v appoint_v by_o god_n and_o to_o be_v well-pleasing_a to_o he_o and_o therefore_o that_o be_v necessary_a circumstance_n be_v such_o thing_n which_o though_o in_o general_n they_o can_v be_v separate_v from_o worship_n yet_o the_o particular_a instance_n or_o modification_n of_o they_o be_v not_o determine_v and_o therefore_o they_o be_v indifferent_a of_o this_o sort_n be_v the_o time_n and_o place_n of_o worship_n the_o habit_n and_o posture_n of_o he_o that_o worship_v these_o be_v circumstance_n and_o perfect_o indifferent_a where_o god_n have_v not_o give_v any_o express_a command_n about_o they_o for_o example_n among_o the_o jew_n the_o time_n and_o place_n of_o their_o worship_n and_o the_o habit_n of_o those_o that_o officiate_v in_o it_o be_v not_o mere_a circumstance_n but_o a_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n itself_o in_o which_o if_o any_o thing_n be_v defective_a or_o different_a from_o the_o institution_n they_o can_v not_o hope_v that_o it_o will_v be_v accept_v by_o god._n but_o these_o to_o christian_n under_o the_o liberty_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v mere_a circumstance_n of_o worship_n which_o the_o prudence_n of_o every_o church_n may_v bring_v into_o such_o use_n as_o shall_v be_v judge_v most_o subservient_fw-fr to_o the_o end_n of_o order_n decency_n and_o edification_n but_o even_o under_o the_o gospel_n those_o who_o believe_v the_o first_o or_o the_o seven_o day_n to_o be_v set_v apart_o by_o god_n and_o consecrate_v still_o to_o his_o worship_n to_o they_o that_o portion_n of_o time_n be_v not_o a_o simple_a circumstance_n but_o a_o real_a part_n of_o divine_a worship_n which_o can_v neither_o be_v change_v nor_o neglect_v in_o the_o next_o place_n as_o the_o magistrate_n have_v no_o power_n to_o impose_v by_o his_o law_n the_o use_n of_o any_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n in_o any_o church_n so_o neither_o have_v he_o any_o power_n to_o forbid_v the_o use_n of_o such_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n as_o be_v already_o receive_v approve_a and_o practise_v by_o any_o church_n because_o if_o he_o do_v so_o he_o will_v destroy_v the_o church_n itself_o the_o end_n of_o who_o institution_n be_v only_o to_o worship_n god_n with_o freedom_n after_o its_o own_o manner_n you_o will_v say_v by_o this_o rule_n if_o some_o congregation_n shall_v have_v a_o mind_n to_o sacrifice_v infant_n or_o as_o the_o primitive_a christian_n be_v false_o accuse_v lustful_o pollute_v themselves_o in_o promiscuous_a uncleanness_n or_o practice_v any_o other_o such_o heinous_a enormity_n be_v the_o magistrate_n oblige_v to_o tolerate_v they_o because_o they_o be_v commit_v in_o a_o religious_a assembly_n i_o answer_v no._n these_o thing_n be_v not_o lawful_a in_o the_o ordinary_a course_n of_o life_n nor_o in_o any_o private_a house_n and_o therefore_o neither_o be_v they_o so_o in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n or_o in_o any_o religious_a meeting_n but_o indeed_o if_o any_o people_n congregat_v upon_o account_n of_o religion_n shall_v be_v desirous_a to_o sacrifice_v a_o calf_n i_o deny_v that_o that_o aught_o to_o be_v prohibit_v by_o a_o law._n melibaeus_n who_o calf_n it_o be_v may_v lawful_o kill_v his_o calf_n at_o home_n and_o burn_v any_o part_n of_o it_o that_o he_o think_v fit_a for_o no_o injury_n be_v thereby_o do_v to_o any_o one_o no_o prejudice_n to_o another_o man_n good_n and_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n he_o may_v kill_v his_o calf_n also_o in_o a_o religious_a meeting_n whether_o the_o do_v so_o be_v well-pleasing_a to_o god_n or_o no_o it_o be_v their_o part_n to_o consider_v that_o do_v it_o the_o part_n of_o the_o magistrate_n be_v only_o to_o take_v care_n that_o the_o commonwealth_n receive_v no_o prejudice_n and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o injury_n do_v to_o any_o man_n either_o in_o life_n or_o estate_n and_o thus_o what_o may_v be_v spend_v on_o a_o feast_n may_v be_v spend_v on_o a_o sacrifice_n but_o if_o peradventure_o such_o be_v the_o state_n of_o thing_n that_o the_o interest_n of_o the_o commonwealth_n require_v all_o slaughter_n of_o beast_n shall_v be_v forbear_v for_o some_o while_n in_o order_n to_o the_o increase_n of_o the_o stock_n of_o cattle_n that_o have_v be_v destroy_v by_o some_o extraordinary_a murrain_n who_o see_v not_o that_o the_o magistrate_n in_o such_o a_o case_n may_v forbid_v all_o his_o subject_n to_o kill_v any_o calf_n for_o any_o use_n whatsoever_o only_o it_o be_v to_o be_v observe_v that_o in_o this_o case_n the_o law_n be_v not_o make_v about_o a_o religious_a but_o a_o political_a matter_n nor_o be_v the_o sacrifice_n but_o the_o slaughter_n of_o calf_n thereby_o prohibit_v by_o this_o we_o see_v what_o difference_n there_o be_v between_o the_o church_n and_o the_o commonwealth_n whatsoever_o be_v lawful_a in_o the_o commonwealth_n can_v be_v prohibit_v by_o the_o magistrate_n in_o the_o church_n whatsoever_o be_v permit_v unto_o any_o of_o his_o subject_n for_o their_o ordinary_a use_n neither_o can_v nor_o aught_o to_o be_v forbid_v by_o he_o to_o any_o sect_n of_o people_n for_o their_o religious_a uses_n if_o any_o man_n may_v lawful_o take_v bread_n or_o wine_n either_o sit_v or_o kneel_v in_o his_o own_o house_n the_o law_n ought_v not_o to_o abridge_v he_o of_o the_o same_o liberty_n in_o his_o religious_a worship_n though_o in_o the_o church_n the_o use_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n be_v very_o different_a and_o be_v there_o apply_v to_o the_o mystery_n of_o faith_n and_o rite_n of_o divine_a worship_n but_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v prejudicial_a to_o the_o commonweal_n of_o a_o people_n in_o their_o ordinary_a use_n and_o be_v therefore_o forbid_v by_o law_n those_o thing_n ought_v not_o to_o be_v permit_v to_o church_n in_o their_o sacred_a rite_n only_o the_o magistrate_n ought_v always_o to_o be_v very_o careful_a that_o he_o do_v not_o misuse_v his_o authority_n to_o the_o oppression_n of_o any_o church_n under_o pretence_n of_o public_a good._n it_o may_v be_v say_v what_o if_o a_o church_n be_v idolatrous_a be_v that_o also_o to_o be_v tolerate_v by_o the_o magistrate_n i_o answer_v what_o power_n can_v be_v give_v to_o the_o magistrate_n for_o the_o suppression_n of_o a_o idolatrous_a church_n which_o may_v not_o in_o time_n and_o place_n be_v make_v use_n of_o to_o the_o ruin_n of_o a_o orthodox_n one_o for_o it_o must_v be_v remember_v that_o the_o civil_a power_n be_v the_o same_o every_o where_o and_o the_o religion_n of_o every_o prince_n be_v orthodox_n to_o himself_o if_o therefore_o such_o a_o power_n be_v grant_v unto_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n in_o spiritual_n as_o that_o at_o geneva_n for_o example_n he_o may_v extirpate_v by_o violence_n and_o blood_n the_o religion_n which_o be_v there_o repute_v idolatrous_a by_o the_o same_o rule_n another_o magistrate_n in_o some_o neighbour_a country_n may_v oppress_v the_o reform_a religion_n and_o in_o india_n the_o christian._n the_o civil_a power_n can_v either_o change_v every_o thing_n in_o religion_n according_a to_o the_o prince_n pleasure_n or_o it_o can_v change_v nothing_o if_o it_o be_v once_o permit_v to_o introduce_v any_o thing_n into_o religion_n by_o the_o mean_n of_o law_n and_o penalty_n there_o can_v be_v no_o bound_n put_v to_o it_o but_o it_o will_v in_o the_o same_o manner_n be_v lawful_a to_o alter_v every_o thing_n according_a to_o that_o rule_n of_o truth_n which_o the_o magistrate_n have_v frame_v unto_o himself_o no_o man_n whatsoever_o ought_v therefore_o to_o be_v deprive_v of_o his_o terrestrial_a enjoyment_n upon_o account_n of_o his_o religion_n not_o even_o american_n subject_v unto_o a_o christian_a prince_n be_v to_o be_v punish_v either_o in_o body_n or_o good_n for_o not_o embrace_v our_o faith_n and_o worship_n if_o they_o be_v persuade_v that_o they_o please_v god_n in_o observe_v the_o rite_n of_o their_o own_o country_n and_o that_o they_o shall_v obtain_v happiness_n by_o that_o mean_n they_o be_v to_o be_v leave_v unto_o god_n and_o themselves_o let_v we_o trace_v this_o matter_n to_o the_o bottom_n thus_o it_o be_v a_o inconsiderable_a and_o weak_a number_n of_o christian_n destitute_a of_o every_o thing_n arrive_v in_o a_o pagan_a country_n these_o foreigner_n beseech_v the_o inhabitant_n by_o the_o bowel_n of_o humanity_n that_o they_o will_v succour_v they_o with_o the_o necessary_n of_o life_n those_o necessary_n be_v give_v they_o habitation_n be_v grant_v and_o they_o all_o join_v together_o and_o grow_v up_o into_o one_o body_n of_o people_n the_o christian_a religion_n by_o this_o mean_n take_v root_n in_o that_o country_n and_o spread_v itself_o but_o do_v not_o sudden_o
such_o case_n care_n be_v to_o be_v take_v that_o the_o sentence_n of_o excommunication_n and_o the_o execution_n thereof_o carry_v with_o it_o no_o rough_a usage_n of_o word_n or_o action_n whereby_o the_o eject_v person_n may_v any_o wise_a be_v damnify_v in_o body_n or_o estate_n for_o all_o force_n as_o have_v often_o be_v say_v belong_v only_o to_o the_o magistrate_n nor_o ought_v any_o private_a person_n at_o any_o time_n to_o use_v force_n unless_o it_o be_v in_o self-defence_n against_o unjust_a violence_n excommunication_n neither_o do_v nor_o can_v deprive_v the_o excommunicate_v person_n of_o any_o of_o those_o civil_a good_n that_o he_o former_o possess_v all_o those_o thing_n belong_v to_o the_o civil_a government_n and_o be_v under_o the_o magistrate_n protection_n the_o whole_a force_n of_o excommunication_n consist_v only_o in_o this_o that_o the_o resolution_n of_o the_o society_n in_o that_o respect_n be_v declare_v the_o union_n that_o be_v between_o the_o body_n and_o some_o member_n come_v thereby_o to_o be_v dissolve_v and_o that_o relation_n cease_v the_o participation_n of_o some_o certain_a thing_n which_o the_o society_n communicate_v to_o its_o member_n and_o unto_o which_o no_o man_n have_v any_o civil_a right_n come_v also_o to_o cease_v for_o there_o be_v no_o civil_a injury_n do_v unto_o the_o excommunicate_v person_n by_o the_o church-minister_n refuse_v he_o that_o bread_n and_o wine_n in_o the_o celebration_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n which_o be_v not_o buy_v with_o he_o but_o other_o man_n money_n second_o no_o private_a person_n have_v any_o right_n in_o any_o manner_n to_o prejudice_v another_o person_n in_o his_o civil_a enjoyment_n because_o he_o be_v of_o another_o church_n or_o religion_n all_o the_o right_n and_o franchise_n that_o belong_v to_o he_o as_o a_o man_n or_o as_o a_o denizen_n be_v inviolable_o to_o be_v preserve_v to_o he_o these_o be_v not_o the_o business_n of_o religion_n no_o violence_n nor_o injury_n be_v to_o be_v offer_v he_o whether_o he_o be_v christian_a or_o pagan_n nay_o we_o must_v not_o content_v ourselves_o with_o the_o narrow_a measure_n of_o bare_a justice_n charity_n bounty_n and_o liberality_n must_v be_v add_v to_o it_o this_o the_o gospel_n enjoin_v this_o reason_n direct_v and_o this_o that_o natural_a fellowship_n we_o be_v bear_v into_o require_v of_o we_o if_o any_o man_n err_v from_o the_o right_a way_n it_o be_v his_o own_o misfortune_n no_o injury_n to_o thou_o nor_o therefore_o be_v thou_o to_o punish_v he_o in_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n because_o thou_o suppose_v he_o will_v be_v miserable_a in_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v what_o i_o say_v concern_v the_o mutual_a toleration_n of_o private_a person_n differ_v from_o one_o another_o in_o religion_n i_o understand_v also_o of_o particular_a church_n which_o stand_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o same_o relation_n to_o each_o other_o as_o private_a person_n among_o themselves_o nor_o have_v any_o one_o of_o they_o any_o manner_n of_o jurisdiction_n over_o any_o other_o no_o not_o even_o when_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n as_o it_o sometime_o happen_v come_v to_o be_v of_o this_o or_o the_o other_o communion_n for_o the_o civil_a government_n can_v give_v no_o new_a right_o to_o the_o church_n nor_o the_o church_n to_o the_o civil_a government_n so_o that_o whether_o the_o magistrate_n join_v himself_o to_o any_o church_n or_o separate_v from_o it_o the_o church_n remain_v always_o as_o it_o be_v before_o a_o free_a and_o voluntary_a society_n it_o neither_o acquire_v the_o power_n of_o the_o sword_n by_o the_o magistrate_n come_v to_o it_o nor_o do_v it_o lose_v the_o right_n of_o instruction_n and_o excommunication_n by_o his_o go_v from_o it_o this_o be_v the_o fundamental_a and_o immutable_a right_n of_o a_o spontaneous_a society_n that_o it_o have_v power_n to_o remove_v any_o of_o its_o member_n who_o transgress_v the_o rule_n of_o its_o institution_n but_o it_o can_v by_o the_o accession_n of_o any_o new_a member_n acquire_v any_o right_n of_o jurisdiction_n over_o those_o that_o be_v not_o join_v with_o it_o and_o therefore_o peace_n equity_n and_o friendship_n be_v always_o mutual_o to_o be_v observe_v by_o particular_a church_n in_o the_o same_o manner_n as_o by_o private_a person_n without_o any_o pretence_n of_o superiority_n or_o jurisdiction_n over_o one_o another_o that_o the_o thing_n may_v be_v make_v yet_o clear_a by_o a_o example_n let_v we_o suppose_v two_o church_n the_o one_o of_o arminian_n the_o other_o of_o calvinist_n reside_v in_o the_o city_n of_o constantinople_n will_v any_o one_o say_v that_o either_o of_o these_o church_n have_v right_o to_o deprive_v the_o member_n of_o the_o other_o of_o their_o estate_n and_o liberty_n as_o we_o see_v practise_v elsewhere_o because_o of_o their_o differ_v from_o it_o in_o some_o doctrine_n or_o ceremony_n whilst_o the_o turk_n in_o the_o mean_a while_n silent_o stand_v by_o and_o laugh_v to_o see_v with_o what_o inhuman_a cruelty_n christian_n thus_o rage_n against_o christian_n but_o if_o one_o of_o these_o church_n have_v this_o power_n of_o treat_v the_o other_o ill_o i_o ask_v which_o of_o they_o it_o be_v to_o who_o that_o power_n belong_v and_o by_o what_o right_o it_o will_v be_v answer_v undoubted_o that_o it_o be_v the_o orthodox_n church_n which_o have_v the_o right_a of_o authority_n over_o the_o erroneous_a or_o heretical_a this_o be_v in_o great_a and_o specious_a word_n to_o say_v just_a nothing_o at_o all_o for_o every_o church_n be_v orthodox_n to_o itself_o too_o other_o erroneous_a or_o heretical_a for_o whatsoever_o any_o church_n believe_v it_o believe_v to_o be_v true_a and_o the_o contrary_a unto_o those_o thing_n it_o pronounce_v to_o be_v error_n so_o that_o the_o controversy_n between_o these_o church_n about_o the_o truth_n of_o their_o doctrine_n and_o the_o purity_n of_o their_o worship_n be_v on_o both_o side_n equal_a nor_o be_v there_o any_o judge_n either_o at_o constantinople_n or_o elsewhere_o upon_o earth_n by_o who_o sentence_n it_o can_v be_v determine_v the_o decision_n of_o that_o question_n belong_v only_o to_o the_o supreme_a judge_n of_o all_o man_n to_o who_o also_o alone_o belong_v the_o punishment_n of_o the_o erroneous_a in_o the_o mean_a while_n let_v those_o man_n consider_v how_o heinous_o they_o sin_v who_o add_v injustice_n if_o not_o to_o their_o error_n yet_o certain_o to_o their_o pride_n do_v rash_o and_o arrogant_o take_v upon_o they_o to_o misuse_v the_o servant_n of_o another_o master_n who_o be_v not_o at_o all_o accountable_a to_o they_o nay_o further_o if_o it_o can_v be_v manifest_a which_o of_o these_o two_o dissent_v church_n be_v in_o the_o right_n there_o will_v not_o accrue_v thereby_o unto_o the_o orthodox_n any_o right_n of_o destroy_v the_o other_o for_o church_n have_v neither_o any_o jurisdiction_n in_o worldly_a matter_n nor_o be_v fire_n and_o sword_n any_o proper_a instrument_n wherewith_o to_o convince_v man_n mind_n of_o error_n and_o inform_v they_o of_o the_o truth_n let_v we_o suppose_v nevertheless_o that_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n incline_v to_o favour_v one_o of_o they_o and_o to_o put_v his_o sword_n into_o their_o hand_n that_o by_o his_o consent_n they_o may_v chastise_v the_o dissenter_n as_o they_o please_v will_v any_o man_n say_v that_o any_o right_n can_v be_v derive_v unto_o a_o christian_a church_n over_o its_o brethren_n from_o a_o turkish_a emperor_n a_o infidel_n who_o have_v himself_o no_o authority_n to_o punish_v christian_n for_o the_o article_n of_o their_o faith_n can_v confer_v such_o a_o authority_n upon_o any_o society_n of_o christian_n nor_o give_v unto_o they_o a_o right_n which_o he_o have_v not_o himself_o this_o will_v be_v the_o case_n at_o constantinople_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o thing_n be_v the_o same_o in_o any_o christian_a kingdom_n the_o civil_a power_n be_v the_o same_o in_o every_o place_n nor_o can_v that_o power_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o christian_a prince_n confer_v any_o great_a authority_n upon_o the_o church_n than_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o heathen_a which_o be_v to_o say_v just_o none_o at_o all_o nevertheless_o it_o be_v worthy_a to_o be_v observe_v and_o lament_v that_o the_o most_o violent_a of_o these_o defender_n of_o the_o truth_n the_o opposer_n of_o error_n the_o exclaimer_n against_o schism_n do_v hardly_o ever_o let_v loose_v this_o their_o zeal_n for_o god_n with_o which_o they_o be_v so_o warm_v and_o inflame_v unless_o where_o they_o have_v the_o civil_a magistrate_n on_o their_o side_n but_o so_o soon_o as_o ever_o court-favour_n have_v give_v they_o the_o better_a end_n of_o the_o staff_n and_o they_o begin_v to_o feel_v themselves_o the_o strong_a then_o present_o peace_n and_o charity_n be_v to_o be_v lay_v aside_o otherwise_o they_o be_v religious_o to_o be_v observe_v where_o they_o have_v not_o
