II. 1 Wisdom promiseth godliness to her children 10 and safety from evil company 20 and direction in good ways My son if thou wilt receive my words and hide my commandments with thee 2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom and apply thine heart to understanding 3 Yea if thou criest after knowledge and †Heb. givest thy voice liftest up thy voice for understanding 4 * Mat. 13.44 If thou seekest her as silver and searchest for her as for hid treasures 5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD and finde the knowledge of God 6 * 1 King 3.9 Jam. 1.5 For the LORD giveth wisdom out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding 7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly 8 He keepeth the paths of judgement and preserveth the way of his saints 9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness and judgement and equity yes every good path 10 ¶ When wisdom entreth into thine heart and knowledge
the maimed and let the blinde man come into the sight of my clearness 22 Keep the old and young within thy walls 23 * Tob. â— 17 18. Wheresoever thou findest the dead †signing bury them take them and bury them and I will give thee the first place in my resurrection 24 Abide still O my people and take thy rest for thy quietness shall come 25 Nourish thy children O thou good nurse stablish their feet 26 As for the servants whom I have given thee there shall not one of them perish for I will require them from among thy number 27 Be not weary for when the day of trouble and heaviness cometh others shall weep and be sorrowful but thou shalt be merry and have abundance 28 The heathen shall envy thee but they shall be able to do nothing against thee saith the Lord. 29 My hands shall cover thee so that thy children shall not see hell 30 Be joyful O thou mother with thy children for I will deliver thee saith the Lord. 31 Remember thy children that sleep for I shall bring them out of the sides of the earth and shew mercy unto them for I am merciful saith the Lord Almighty 32 Embrace thy children until I come and ‖ Or preaâ—e shew mercy unto them for my wells run over and my grace shall not fail 33 I Esdras received a charge of the Lord upon the mount Oreb that I should go unto Israel but when I came unto then they set me at nought and despised the commandment of the Lord. 34 And therefore I say unto you O ye heathen that hear and understand Look for your Shepherd he shall give you everlasting rest for he is nigh at hand that shall come in the end of the world 35 Be ready to the reward of the kingdom for the everlasting light shall shine upon you for evermore 36 Flee the shadow of this world receive the joyfulness of your glory I testify my Saviour openly 37 O receive the gift that is given you and be glad giving thanks unto him that hath called you to the heavenly kingdom 38 Arise up and stand behold the number of those that be sealed ‖ Or for in the feast of the Lord. 39 Which are departed from the shadow of the world and have received glorious garments of the Lord. 40 Take thy number O Sion and †Lat. conclude shut up those of thine that are clothed in white which have fulfilled the law of the Lord. 41 The number of thy children whom thou longedst for is fulfilled beseech the power of the Lord that thy people which have been called from the beginning may be hallowed 42 * Rev. 7.9 I Esdras saw upon the mount Sion a great people whom I could not number and they all praised the Lord with songs 43 And in the midst of them there was a young man of a high stature taller then all the rest and upon every one of their heads he set crowns and was more exalted which I marvelled at greatly 44 So I asked the angel and said ‖ Or Lord. Sir what are these 45 He answered and said unto me These be they that have put off the mortal clothing and put on the immortal and have confessed the name of God now are they crowned and receive palms 46 Then said I unto the angel What young person is it that crowneth them and giveth them palms in their hands 47 So he answered and said unto me It is the Son of God whom they have confessed in the world Then began I greatly to commend them that stood so stifly for the name of the Lord. 48 Then the angel said unto me Go thy way and tell my people what manner of things and how great wonders of the Lord thy God thou hast seen CHAP. III. 1 Esdras is troubled 13 and acknowledgeth the sins of the people 28 yet complaineth that the heathen were lords over them being more wicked then they IN the thirtieth year after the ruine of the city I was in Babylon and lay troubled upon my bed and my thoughts came up over my heart 2 For I saw the desolation of Sion and the wealth of them that dwelt at Babylon 3 And my spirit was sore moved so that I began to speak words full of fear to the most High and said 4 O Lord who bearest rule thou spakest at the beginning when thou didst plant the earth and that thy self alone and commandedst the people 5 * Gen. 2.7 And gavest a body unto Adam without soul which was the workmanship of thine hands and didst breath into him the breath of life and he was made living before thee 6 And thou leddest him into paradise which thy right hand had planted before ever the earth came forward 7 And unto him thou gavest commandment to love thy way which he transgressed and immediately thou appointedst death in him and in his generations of whom came nations tribes people and kindreds out of number 8 * Gen. 6.12 And every people walked after their own will and did wonderful things before thee and despised thy commandments 9 * Gen. 7.10 And again in process of time thou broughtest the floud upon those that dwelt in the world and destroyedst them 10 And it came to pass in every of them that as death was to Adam so was the floud to these 11 Nevertheless one of them thou leftest namely * 1 Pet. 3.20 Noah with his houshold of whom came all righteous men 12 And it happened that when they that dwelt upon the earth began to multiply and had gotten them many children and were a great people they began again to be more ungodly then the first 13 Now when they lived so wickedly before thee * Gen. 12.1 thou didst choose thee a man from among them whose name was * Gen. 17.5 Abraham 14 Him thou lovedst and unto him onely thou shewedst thy will 15 And madest an everlasting covenant with him promising him that thou wouldest never forsake his seed 16 * Gen. 21.2 3. And unto him thou gavest Isaac and * Gen. 25.25 26. unto Isaac also thou gavest Jacob and Esau As for Jacob thou * Mal. 1.2 3. Rom. 9.13 didst choose him to thee and put by Esau and so Jacob became a great multitude 17 And it came to pass that when thou ledst his seed out of Egypt * Exod. 19.1 Deut. 4.10 thou broughtest them up to the mount Sina 18 And bowing the heavens thou didst set fast the earth movedst the whole world and madest the depths to tremble and troubledst the men of that age 19 And thy glory went through four gates of fire and of earthquake and of wind and of cold that thou mightest give the law unto the seed of Jacob ‖ and to all the generation of Israel that they should keep it with diligence and diligence unto the generation of Israel 20 And yet tookest thou not away
the army of Assur and behold the canopy wherein he did lie in his drunkenness and the Lord hath smitten him by the hand of a woman 16 As the Lord liveth who hath kept me in my way that I went my countenance hath deceived him to his destruction and yet hath he not committed sin with me to defile and shame me 17 Then all the people were wonderfully astonished and bowed themselves and worshipped God and said with one accord Blessed be thou O our God which hast this day brought to nought the enemies of thy people 18 Then said Ozias unto her O daughter blessed art thou of the most high God above all the women upon the earth and blessed be the Lord God which hath created the heavens and the earth which hath directed thee to the cutting off of the head of the chief of our enemies 19 For this thy confidence shall not depart from the heart of men which remember the power of God for ever 20 And God turn these things to thee for a perpetual praise to visit thee in good things because thou hast not spared thy life for the affliction of our nation but hast revenged our ruine walking a straight way before our God And all the people said So be it so be it CHAP. XIV 8 Achior heareth Judith shew what she had done and is cirâ—umcised 11 The bead of Holofernes is hanged up 15 He as found dead and much lamented THen said Judith unto them Hear me now my brethren and take this * 2 Mac. 15.35 head and hang it upon the highest place of your walls 2 And so soon as the morning shall appear and the sun shall come forth upon the earth take you every one his weapons and go forth every valiant man out of the city and set you a captain over them as though you would go down into the field toward the watch of the Assyrians but go not down 3 Then they shall take their armour and shall go into their camp and raise up the captains of the army of Assur and they shall run to the tent of Holofernes but shall not finde him then fear shall fall upon them and they shall flee before your face 4 So you and all that inhabit the coast of Israel shall pursue them and overthrow them as they go 5 But before you do these things call me Achior the Ammonite that he may see and know him that despised the house of Israel and that sent him to us as it were to his death 6 Then they called Achior out of the house of Ozias and when he was come and saw the head of Holofernes in a mans hand in the assembly of the people he fell down on his face and his spirit failed 7 But when they had recovered him he fell at Judiths feet and reverenced heâ— and said Blessed art thou in all the tabernacle of Juda and in all nations which hearing thy name shall be astonished 8 Now therefore tell me all the things that then hast done in these days Then Judith declared unto him in the midst of the people all that she had done from the day that she went forth until that hour she spake unto them 9 And when she had left off speaking the people shouted with a loud voice and made a joyful noise in their city 10 And when Achior had seen all that the God of Israel had done he beleeved in God greatly and circumcised the flesh of his fore-skin and was joyned unto the house of Israel unto this day 11 And assoon as the morning arose they hanged the head of Holofernes upon the wall and every man took his weapons and they went forth by bands unto the ‖ Or â—sâ—â—es straits of the mountain 12 But when the Assyrians saw them they sent to their leaders which came to their captains and tribunes and to every one of their rulers 13 So they came to Holofernes tent and said to him that had the charge of all his things Waken now our lord for the slaves have been bold to come down against us to battel that they may be utterly destroyed 14 Then went in Bagoas and knocked at the door of the tent for he thought that he had slept with Judith 15 But because none answered he opened it and went into the bed-chamber and found him cast upon the floor dead and his head was taken from him 16 ‖ Then Therefore he cried with a loud voice with weeping and sighing and a mighty cry and rent his garments 17 After he went into the tent where Judith lodged and when he found her not he leaped out to the people and cried 18 These slaves have dealt treacherously one woman of the Hebrews hath brought shame upon the house of king Nabuchodonolor for behold Holofernes lieth upon the ground without a head 19 When the captains of the Assyrians army heard these words they rent their coats and their minds were wonderfully troubled and there was a cry and a very great noise throughout the camp CHAP. XV. 1 The Assyrians are chased and slain 8 The high priest cometh to see Judith 11 The stuff of Holofernes is given to Judith 13 The women crown her with a garland ANd when they that were in the tents heard they were astonished at the thing that was done 2 And fear and trembling fell upon them so that there was no man that durst abide in the sight of his neighbour but rushing out altogether they fled into every way of the plain and of the hill-countrey 3 They also that had camped in the mountains round about Bethulia fled away Then the children of Israel every one that was a warriour among them rushed out upon them 4 Then sent Oziaâ— to Betomasthem and to Bebai and Chobai and Cola and to all the coasts of Israel such as should tell the things that were done and that all should rush forth upon their enemies to destroy them 5 Now when the children of Israel heard it they all fell upon them with one consent and slew them unto Chobai likewise also they that came from Jerusalem and from all the hill-countrey for men had told them what things were done in the camp of their enemies and they that were in Galaad and in Galilee ‖ Or â—â—â—ams chased them with a great slaughter until they were past Damascus and the borders thereof 6 And the residue that dwelt at Bethulia fell upon the camp of Assur and spoiled them and were greatly enriched 7 And the children of Israel that returned from the slaughter had that which remained and the villages and the cities that were in the mountains and in the plain gat many spoils for the multitude was very great 8 Then Joacim the high pâ—â—â—st and the ancients of the children of Israel that dwelt in Jerusalem came to behold the good things that God had shewed to Israel and to see Judith and to salute her 9 And when they came unto her they blessed her with
God we have sinned we have done ungodly we have dealt unrighteously in all mine ordinances 13 Let thy wrath turn from us for we are but a few left among the heathen where thou hast scattered us 14 Hear our prayers O Lord and our petitions and deliver us for thine own sake and give us favour in the sight of them which have led us away 15 That all the earth may know that thou art the Lord our God because †Gr. thy came is called upon Israel Israel and his posterity is called by thy name 16 O Lord * Deut. 26.15 Isa 63.15 look down from thy holy house and consider us bow down thine ear O Lord to hear us 17 Open thine eyes and behold for the * Ps 6.5 115.17 Isa 38.15 19. dead that are in the graves whose †Gr. spirit or sisâ— souls are taken from their bodies will give unto the Lord neither praise nor righteousness 18 But the soul that is greatly vexed which goeth stooping and feeble and the eyes that sail and the hungry soul will give thee praise and righteousness O Lord. 19 * Dan. 9.18 Therefore we do not make our humble supplication before thee O Lord our God for the righteousness of our fathers and of our kings 20 For thou hast sent out thy wrath and indignation upon us as thou hast spoken by thy servants the prophets saying 21 * Jer. 27.11 Thus faith the Lord Bow down your shoulders to serve the king of Babylon so shall ye remain in the land that I gave unto your fathers 22 But if ye will not hear the voice of the Lord to serve the king of Babylon 23 I will cause to cease out of the cities of Juda and from without Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of joy the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride and the whole land shall be desolate of inhabitants 24 But we would not hearken unto thy voice to serve the king of Babylon therefore hast thou made good the words that thou spakest by thy servants the prophets namely that the bones of our kings and the bones of our fathers should be taken out of their places 25 And so they are cast out to the heat of the day and to the frost of the night and they died in great miseries by famine by sword and by pestilence 26 And the house which is called by thy name hast thou said waste as it is to be seen this day for the wickedness of the house of Israel and the house of Juda. 27 O Lord our God thou hast dealt with us after all thy goodness and according to all that great mercy of thine 28 As thou spakest by thy servant Moses in the day when thou didst command him to write thy law before the children of Israel saying 29 * Lev. 26.14 Deu. 28.15 If ye will not hear my voice surely †Gr. this great sâ—arm this very great multitude shall be turned into a small number among the nations where I will scatter them 30 For I knew that they would not hear me because it is a stiff-necked people but in the land of their captivities they shall ‖ Or come to themselves remember themselves 31 And shall know that I am the Lord their God for I will give them an heart and ears to hear 32 And they shall praise me in the land of their captivity and think upon my name 33 And return from their stiff †Gr. back neck and from their wicked deeds for they shall remember the way of their fathers which finned before the Lord. 34 And I will bring them again into the land which I promised with an oath unto their fathers Abraham Isaac and Jacob and they shall be lords of it and I will increase them and they shall not be diminished 35 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them to be their God and they shall be my people and I will no more drive my people of Israel out of the land that I have given them CHAP. III. 3 The rest of their prayer and confession contained in that book which Baruch wrote and sent to Jerusalem 30 Wisdom was shewed first to Jacob and was seen upon the earth O Lord almighty God of Israel the soul in anguish the troubled spirit crieth unto thee 2 Hear O Lord and have mercy for thou art merciful and have pity upon us because we have sinned before thee 3 For thou endurest for ever and we perish utterly 4 O Lord almighty thou God of Israel hear now the prayers of the dead Israelites and of their children which have sinned before thee and not hearkned unto the voice of thee their God for the which cause these plagues cleave unto us 5 Remember not the iniquities of our forefathers but think upon thy power and thy name now at this time 6 For thou art the Lord our God and thee O Lord will we praise 7 And for this cause thou hast put thy fear in our hearts to the intent that we should call upon thy name and praise thee in our captivity for * Deut. 30.1 we have called to minde all the iniquity of our forefathers that sinned before thee 8 Behold we are yet this day in our captivity where thou hast scattered us for a reproach and a curse and to be subject to payments according to all the iniquities of our fathers which departed from the Lord our God 9 Hear Israel the commandments of life give ear to understand wisdom 10 How hapneth it Israel that thou art in thine enemies land that thou art waxen old in a strange countrey that thou art defiled with the dead 11 That thou art counted with them that go down into the grave 12 Thou hast forsaken the fountain of wisdom 13 For if thou hadst walked in the way of God thou shouldest have dwelled in peace for ever 14 Learn where is wisdom where is strength where is understanding that thou mayest know also where is length of days and life where is the light of the eyes and peace 15 * Joh. 2â— 12 20. Who hath found out her place or who hath come into her treasures 16 Where are the princes of the heathen become and such as ruled the beasts upon the earth 17 They that had their pastime with the fouls of the air and they that hoarded up silver and gold wherein men trust and made no end of their getting 18 For they that wrought in silver and were so careful and whose works are unsearchable 19 They are vanished and gone down to the grave and others are come up in their steads 20 Young men have seen light and dwelt upon the earth but the way of knowledge have they not known 21 Nor understood the paths thereof nor laid hold of it their children were far off from that way 22 It hath not been heard of in Chanaan neither hath it been seen in Theman 23 The
burnt-offering or sacrifice or oblation or incense or place to sacrifice before thee and to finde mercy 16 Nevertheless in a contrite heart and an humble spirit let us be accepted 17 Like as in the burnt-offerings of rams and bullocks and like as in ten thousands of fat lambs so let our sacrifice be in thy sight this day and grant that we may wholly go after thee for they shall not be confounded that put their trust in thee 18 And now we follow thee with all our heart we fear thee and seek thy face 19 Put us not to shame but deal with us after thy loving kindness and according to the multitude of thy mercies 20 Deliver us also according to thy marvellous works give glory to thy name O Lord let all them that do thy servants hurt be ashamed 21 And let them be confounded ‖ Or by thy power and might in all their power and might and let their strength be broken 22 And let them know that thou art Lord the onely God and glorious over the whole world 23 And the kings servants that put history of Susanna set apart from the beginning of Daniel because it is not in the Hebrew as neither the narration of †Gr. Bels dragon Bel and the Dragon 16 Two judges hide themselves in the garden of Susanna to have their pleasure of her 28 which when they could not obtain they accuse and cause her to be condemned for adultery 45 But Daniel examineth the matter again and findeth the two judges false THere dwelt a man in Babylon called Joacim 2 And he took a wife whose name was Susanna the daughter of Chelcias
difficulty which they finde that desire to look into the narrations of the story for the variety of the matter 25 We have been careful that they that will read might have delight and that they that are desirous to commit to memory might have ease and that all into whose hands it comes might have profit 26 Therefore to us that have taken upon us this painful labour of abridging it was not easie but a matter of sweat and watching 27 Even as it is no ease unto him that prepareth a banquet and seeketh the benefit of others yet ‖ Or to deserve well of many for the pleasuring of many we will undertake gladly this great pains 28 Leaving to the authour the exact handling of every particular and labouring to follow the rules of an abridgement 29 For as the master-builder of a new house must care for the whole building but he that undertaketh to set it out and paint it must seek out fit things for the adorning thereof even so I think it is with us 30 To stand upon every point and go over things at large and to be curious in particulars belongeth to the first authour of the story 31 But to use brevity and avoid much labouring of the work is to be granted to him that will make an abridgement 32 Here then will we begin the story onely adding thus much to that which hath been said That it is a foolish thing to make a long prologue and to be short in the story it self CHAP. III. 1 Of the honour done to the temple by the kings of the Gentiles 4 Simon uttereth what treasures are in the temple 7 Heliodorus is sent to take them away 24 He is stricken of God and healed at the prayer of Onias NOw when the holy city was inhabited with all peace and the laws were kept very well because of the godliness of Onias the high priest and his hatred of wickedness 2 It came to pass that even the kings themselves did honour the place and magnifie the temple with their best gifts 3 Insomuch that Seleucus king of Asia of his own revenues bare all the costs belonging to the service of the sacrifices 4 But one Simon of the tribe of Benjamin who was made governour of the temple fell out with the high priest about disorder in the city 5 And when he could not overcome Onias he gat him to Arollonius the son of Thraseas who then was governour of Celosyria and Phenice 6 And told him that the treasury in Jerusalem was full of infinite sums of money so that the multitude of their riches which did not pertain to the account of the sacrifices was innumerable and that it was possible to bring all into the kings hand 7 Now when Apollonius came to the king had shewed him of the the money whereof he was told the king chose out Heliodorus his treasurer and sent him with a commandment to bring him the foresaid money 8 So forthwith Heliodorus took his journey under a colour of visiting the cities of Celosyria and Pâ—â—nice but indeed to fulfil the kings purpose 9 And when he was come to Jerusalem and had been courteously received of the high priest of the city he told him what intelligence was given of the money and declared wherefore he came and asked if these things were so indeed 10 Then the high priest told him that there was such money laid up for the relief of widows and fatherless children 11 And that some of it belonged to Hircanus son of Tobias a man of great digâ—ity and not as that wicked Simon had misinformed the sum whereof in all was four hundred talents of silver and two hundred of gold 12 And that it was altogether impossible that such wrongs should be done unto them that had committed it to the holiness of the place and to the majesty and inviolable sanctity of the temple honoured over all the world 13 But Heliodorus because of the kings commandment given him said That in any wise it must be brought into the kings treasury 14 So at the day which he appointed he entred in to order this matter wherefore there was no smaâ—l agony throughout the whole city 15 But the priests prostrating themselves before the altar in their priests vestments called unto heaven upon him that made a law concerning things given to bâ— kept that they should safety be preserved for such as had committed them to be kept 16 Then whoso had looked the high priest in the face it would have wounded his heart for his countenance and the changing of his colour declared the inward agony of his minde 17 For the man was so compassed with fear and horrour of the body that it was manifest to them that looked upon him what sorrow he had now in his heart 18 Others ran flocking out of their houses ‖ Or to make general supplication to the general supplication because the place was like to come into contempt 19 And the women girt with sackcloth under their breasts abounded in the streets and the virgins that were kept in ran some to the gates and some to the walls and others looked out of the windows 20 And all holding their hands towards heaven made supplication 21 Then it would have pitied a man to see the falling down of the multitude of all sorts and the †Gr. expectation fear of the high priest being in such an agony 22 They then called upon the almighty Lord to keep the tâ—ings committed of trust safe and sure for those that had committed them 23 Nevertheless Heliodorus executed that which was decreed 24 Now as he was there present himself with his guard about the treasury the ‖ Or Lord of our fathers Lord of spirits and the prince of all power caused a great appatition so that all that presumed to come in with him were astonished at the power of God and fainted and were sore afraid 25 For there appeared unto them an horse with a terrible rider upon him and adorned with a very fair covering and he ran fiercely and smote at Heliodorus with his forefeet and it seemed that he that sat upon the horse had complete harness of gold 26 Moreover two other young men appeared before him notable in strength excellent in beauty and comely in apparel who stood by him on either side and scourged him continually and gave him many sore stripes 27 And Heliodorus fell suddenly unto the ground and was compassed with great darkness but they that were with him took him up and put him into a litter 28 Thus him that lately came with a great train and with all his guard into the said treasury they carried out being unable to help himself with his weapons and manifestly they acknowledged the power of God 29 For he by the hand of God was cast down and lay speechless without all hope of life 30 But they praised the Lord that had miraculously honoured his own place for the temple
over that he had 24 ¶ And Jacob was left alone and there wrestled a man with him until the †Heb. ascending of the morning breaking of the day 25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him he touched the hollow of his thigh and the hollow of Jacobs thigh was out of joynt as he wrestled with him 26 And he said Let me go for the day breaketh And he said * Hos 12.4 I will not let thee go except thou bless me 27 And he said unto him What is thy name And he said Jacob. 28 And he said * Chap. 35.10 Thy name shall be called no more Jacob but Israel for as a prince hast thou power with God with men hast prevailed 29 And Jacob asked him and said Tell me I pray thee thy name And he said Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name and he blessed him there 30 And Jacob called the name of the place ‖ That is the face of God Peniel for I have seen God face to face and my life is preserved 31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him and he halted upon his thigh 32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank which is upon the hollow of the thigh unto this day because he touched the hollow of Jacobs thigh in the sinew that shrank CHAP. XXXIII 3 The kindness of Jacob and Esau at their meeting 17 Jacob cometh to Succoth 18 At Shalem be buyeth a field and buildeth an altar called El-elobe israel ANd Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked and behold Esau came and with him four hundred men And he divided the children unto Leah and unto Rachel and unto the two hand maâ—ds 2 And he put the hand-maids and their children foremost and Leah and her children after and Rachel and Joseph hindermost 3 And he passed-over before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times until he came near to his brother 4 And Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him and they wept 5 And he lift up his eyes and saw the women and the children and said Who are those †Heb. to thee with thee And he said The children which God hath graciously given thy servant 6 Then the hand-maidens came near they and their children and they bowed themselves 7 And Leah also with her children came near and bowed themselves and after came Joseph near and Rachel and they bowed themselves 8 And he said †Heb. What is all this band to thee What meanest thou by all this drove which I met And he said These are to finde grace in the sight of my lord 9 And Esau said I have enough my brother †Heb. be that to thee that is thine keep that thou hast unto thy self 10 And Jacob said Nay I pray thee if now I have found grace in thy sight then receive my present at my hand for therefore I have seen thy face as though I had seen the face of God and thou wast pleased with me 11 Take I pray thee my blessing that is brought to thee because God hath dealt graciously with me and because I have enough and he urged him and he took it 12 And he said Let us take our journey and let us go and I will go before thee 13 And he said unto him My lord knoweth that the children are tender and the flocks and herds with young are with me and if men should overdrive them one day all the flock will die 14 Let my lord I pray thee pass over before his servant and I will lead on softly according †Heb. according to the foot of the work c and according to the foot of the children as the cattel that goeth before me and the children be able to endure until I come unto my lord unto Seir. 15 And Esau said Let me now †Heb. sets or place leave with thee some of the folk that are with me And he said †Heb. Wherefore is this What needeth it Let me finde grace in the sight of my lord 16 ¶ So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir. 17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth built him an house and made booths for his cattel therefore the name of the place is called ‖ That is booths Succoth 18 ¶ And Jacob came to Shalem a city of ‖ Called Acts 7.16 Sychem Shechem which is in the land of Canaan when he came from Padan-aram and pitched his tent before the city 19 And he bought a parcel of a field where he had spread his tent at the hand of the children of ‖ Called Acts 7.16 Emmor Hamor Shechems father for an hundred ‖ Or lambs pieces of money 20 And he erected there an altar and called it ‖ That is God the God of Israel El-elohe-israel CHAP. XXXIV 1 Dinah is ravished by Shechem 4 He sueth to marry her 13 The sons of Jacob offer the condition of circumcision to the Shechemites 20 Hamor and Shechem perswade them to accept it 25 The sons of Jacob upon that advantage slay them 27 and spoil their citâ— 30 Jacob reproveth Simeon and Levi. ANd Dinah the daughter of Leah which she bare unto Jacob went out to see the daughters of the land 2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite prince of the countrey saw her he took her and lay with her and †Heb. humbled her defiled her 3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob and he loved the damsel and spake †Heb. to her heart kindly unto the damsel 4 And Shechem sâ—ake unto his father Hamor saying Get me this damsel to wife 5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter now his sons were with his cattel in the field and Jacob held his peace until they were come 6 ¶ And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him 7 And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it and the men were grieved and they were very wroth because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacobs daughter which thing ought not to be done 8 And Hamor communed with them saying The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter I pray you give her him to wife 9 And make ye marriages with us and give your daughters unto us and take our daughters unto you 10 And ye shall dwell with us and the land shall be before you dwell and trade you therein and get you possessions therein 11 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren Let me finde grace in your eyes and what ye shall say unto me I will give 12 Ask me never so much dowry and gift and I will give according as ye shall say unto me but give me the damsel to wife 13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem

LXIX 1 David complaineth of his affliction 13 He prayeth for deliverance 22 He devoteth his enemies to dectruction 30 He praiseth God with thanksgiving ¶ To the chief musician upon Shoshannim A psalm of David SAve me O God for the waters are come in unto my soul 2 I sink in †Heb. the mire of depth deep mire where there is no standing I am come into †Heb. depth of waters deep waters where the flouds everflow me 3 I am weary of my crying my throat is dried mine eyes fail while I wait for my God 4 They that hate me without a cause are mo then the hairs of mine head they that would destroy me being mine enemies wrongfully are mighty then I restored that which I took not away 5 O God thou knowest my foolishness and my †Heb. guiltiness sins are not hid from thee 6 Let not them that wait on thee O Lord GOD of hosts he ashamed for my lake let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake O God of Israel 7 Because for thy sake I have born reproach shame hath covered my face 8 I am become a stranger unto my brethren and an aliant unto my mothers children 9 * Joh. 2. â—â— For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up * Rom. 15.3 and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are faln upon me 10 When I wept and chastned my soul with fasting that was to my reproach 11 I made sackcloth also my garment and I became a proverb to them 12 They that sit in the gate speak against me and I was the song of the †Heb. drinkers of strong drink drunkards 13 But as for me my prayer is unto thee O LORD in an acceptable time O God in the multitude of thy mercy hear me in the truth of thy salvation 14 Deliver me out of the mire and let me not sink let me be delivered from them that hate me and out of the deep waters 15 Let not the water-flood overflow me neither let the deep swallow me up and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me 16 Hear me O LORD for thy loving kindness is good turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies 17 And hide not thy face from thy servant for I am in trouble †Heb. make haste to hear me hear me speedily 18 Draw nigh unto my soul and redeem it deliver me because of mine enemies 19 Thou hast known my reproach and my shame and my dishonour mine adversaries are all before thee 20 Reproach hath broken my heart and I am full of heaviness and I looked for some †Heb. to lament with me to take pity but there was none and for comforters but I found none 21 They gave me also gall for my meat * Mat. 27.48 Mar. 15.23 Joh. 19.29 and in my thirst they gave me vineger to drink 22 * Rom. 11.9 Let their table become a snare before them and that which should have been for their welfare let it become a trap 23 Let their eyes be darkned that they see not and make their loyns continually to shake 24 Pour out thine indignation upon them and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them 25 Let †Heb. their palace their habitation be desolate †Heb. let there not be a dweller let none dwell in their tents 26 For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten and they talk to the grief of †Heb. thy wounded those whom thou hast wounded 27 Add ‖ Or punishment of iniquity iniquity to their iniquity and let them not come into thy righteousness 28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the siving and not be written with the righteous 29 But I am

Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more then the living which are yet alive 3 * Job 3.11 16.21 Yea better is be then both they which hath not yet been who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun 4 ¶ Again I considered all travel and †Heb. all the rightness of work every right work that †Heb. this is the envy of a man from his neighbour for this a man is envied of his neighbour This is also vanity and vexation of spirit 5 * Pro. 6.10 24.33 The fool foldeth his hands his hands together and eateth his own flesh 6 * Prov. 15. â—6 17. 26.8 Better is an handful with quietness then both the hands full with travel and vexation of spirit 7 ¶ Then I returned and I saw vanity under the sun 8 There is one alone and there is not a second yea he hath neither childe nor brother yet is there no end of all his labour neither is his eye satisfied with riches neither saith be For whom do I labour and bereave my soul of good This is also vanity yea it is a sore travel 9 ¶ Two are better then one because they have a good reward for their labour 10 For if they fall the one will lift up his fellow but wo to him that is alone when he falleth for he hath not another to help him up 11 Again if two lie together then they have heat but how can one be warm alone 12 And if one prevail against him two shall withstand him and a threefold cord is not quickly broken 13 ¶ Better is a poor and a wise childe then an old and foolish king †Heb. who knoweth not to in admoniâ—â—ed who will no more be admonished 14 For out of prison he cometh to reign whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor 15 I considered all the living which walk under the sun with the second childe that shall stand up in his stead 16 There is no end of all the people even of all that have been before them they also that come after shall not rejoyce in him Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit CHAP. V. 1 Vanities in divine service 8 in murmuring against oppression 9 and in riches 18 Joy in riches is the gift of God KEep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God and be more ready to hear * 1 〈◊〉 â—â— 22 Psal 30.8 Prov. 15.8 21.27 then to give the sacrifice of fools for they consider not that they do evil 2 Be not rash with thy mouth and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any ‖ Or word thing before God for God is in heaven and thou upon earth therefore let thy words * Prov. â—0 19 Mat. 6.7 be few 3 For a dream cometh through the multitude of business and a fools voice is known by multitude of words 4 * Deut. 23.21 When thou vowest a vow unto God defer not to pay it for be hath no pleasure in fools * Psal 66.13 1â— pay that which thou hast vowed 5 Better is it that thou shouldest not vow then that thou shouldest vow and not pay 6 Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin neither say thou before the angel that it was an errour wherefore should God be angry at thy voice and destroy the work of thine hands 7 For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities but sear thou God 8 ¶ If thou seest the oppression of the poor and violent perverting of judgement and justice in a province marvel not †Heb. of the will or purpose at the matter for be that is higher then the highest regardeth and there be higher then they 9 ¶ Moreover the profit of the earth is for all the king himself is served by the field 10 He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver nor he that loveth abundance with increase this is also vanity 11 When goods increase they are increased that eat them and what good is there to the owners thereof saving the beholding of them with their eyes 12 The sleep of a labouring man is sweet whether he eat little or much but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep 13 There is a fore evil which I have seen under the sun namely riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt 14 Buâ— those riches perish by evil travel and he begetteth a son and there is nothing in his hand 15 * Job 1.21 Psal 49.17 a â—im 6.7 As he came forth of his mothers womb naked shall he return to go as he came and shall take nothing of his labour which he may carry away in his hand 16 And this also is a fore evil that in all points as he came so shall he go and * Ch. 1.3 what profit hath be that hath laboured for the wind 17 All his days also he eateth in darkness and be hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickness 18 ¶ Behold that which I have seen * Ch. 2.24 3.12.13 †Heb. there is a good which is comely c. it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun †Heb. the number of the days all the days of his life which God giveth him for it is his portion 19 Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth and hath given him power to eat thereof and to take his portion and to rejoyce in his labour this is the gift of God 20 ‖ Or Though he give not much yet be remembreth c. For he shall not much remember the days of his life because God answereth him in the joy of his heart CHAP. VI. 1 The vanity of riches without use 3 of children 6 and old age without riches 9 The vanity of sight and wandring desires 11 The conclusion of vanities THere is an evil which I have seen under the sun and it is common among men 2 A man to whom God hath given riches wealth and honour â—o that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof but a stranger eateth it this is vanity and it is an evil disease 3 ¶ If a man beget an hundred children and live many years so that the days of his years be many and his soul be not filled with good and also that he have no burial I say that an untimely birth is better then he 4 For he cometh in with vanity and departeth in
unto us your minde concerning the writings Then began the first who had spoken of the strength of wine 18 And he said thus O ye men how exceeding strong is wine it causeth all men to err that drink it 19 It maketh the minde of the king and of the fatherless childe to be all one of the bond-man and of the freeman of the poor man and of the rich 20 It turneth also every thought into jollity and mirth so that a man remembreth neither sorrow nor debt 21 And it maketh every heart rich so that a man remembreth neither king nor governour and it maketh to speak all things by talents 22 And when they are in their cups they forget their love both to friends and brethren and a little after draw out swords 23 But when they are from the wine they remember not what they have done 24 O ye men is not wine the strongest that enforceth to do thus And when he had so spoken he held his peace CHAP. IV. 1 The second declareth the power of a king 14 The third the force of women 33 and of truth 41 The third is judged to be wisest 47 and obtaineth letters of the king to build Jerusalem 58 He praiseth God and sheweth his brethren what he had done THen the second that had spoken of the strength of the king began to say 2 O ye men do not men excel in strength that ‖ Or have the command bear rule over sea and land and all things in them 3 But yet the king is more mighty for he is lord of all these things and hath dominion over them and whatsoever he commandeth them they do 4 If he bid them make war the one against the other they do it if he send them out against the enemies they go and break down mountains walls and towers 5 They slay and are slain and transgress not the kings commandment if they get the victory they bring all to the king as well the spoil as all things else 6 Likewise for those that are no souldiers and have not to do with wars but use husbandry when they have reaped again that which they had sown they bring it to the king and compel one another to pay tribute unto the king 7 And yet he is but one man if he command to kill they kill if he command to spare they spare 8 If he command to smite they smite if he command to make desolate they make desolate if he command to build they build 9 If he command to cut down they cut down if he command to plant they plant 10 So all his people and his armies obey him furthermore he lieth down he eateth and drinketh and taketh his rest 11 And these keep watch round about him neither ‖ Or can may any one depart and do his own business neither disobey they him in any thing 12 O ye men how should not the king be mightiest when in such sort he is obeyed And he held his tongue 13 ¶ Then the third who had spoken of women and of the truth this was Zorobabel began to speak 14 O ye men it is not the great king nor the multitude of men neither is it wine that †Heb. is of force excelleth who is it then that ruleth them or hath the lordship over them are they not women 15 Women have born the king and all the people that bear rule by sea and land 16 Even of them came they and they nourished them up that planted the vineyards from whence the wine cometh 17 These also make garments for men these bring glory unto men and without women cannot men be 18 Yea and if men have gathered together gold and silver or any other goodly thing do they not love a woman which is comely in favour and beauty 19 And letting all those things go do they not gape and even with open mouth fix their eyes fast on her and have not all men more desire unto her then unto silver or gold or any goodly thing whatsoever 20 A man leaveth his own father that brought him up and his own countrey and cleaveth unto his wife 21 He sticks not to spend his life with his wife and remembreth neither father nor mother nor countrey 22 By this also you must know that women have dominion over you do ye not labour and toil and give and bring all to the woman 23 Yea a man taketh his sword and goeth his way to rob and to steal to sail upon the sea and upon rivers 24 And looketh upon a lion and goeth in the darkness and when he hath stoln spoiled and robbed he bringeth it to his love 25 Wherefore a man loveth his wife better then father or mother 26 Yea many there be that have ‖ Or grown desperate run out of their wits for women and become servants for their sakes 27 Many also have perished have erred and sinned for women 28 And now do you not beleeve me is not the king great in his power do not all regions fear to touch him 29 Yet did I see him and Apame the kings concubine the daughter of the admirable ‖ Jos antiq l. 11. c. 4. Rabsaces Themasiu◠Bartacus sitting at the right hand of the king 30 And taking the crown from the kings head and setting it upon her own head she also stroke the king with her left hand 31 And yet ‖ Or hereat for all this the king gaped and gazed upon her with open month if she laughed upon him he laughed also but if she took any displeasure at him the king was fain to flatter that she might ‖ Or be friends with him be reconciled to him again 32 O ye men how can it be but women should be strong seeing they do thus 33 Then the king and the princes looked one upon another so he began to speak of the truth 34 O ye men are not women strong great is the earth high is the heaven swift is the sun in his course for he compasseth the heavens round about and fetcheth his course again to his own place in one day 35 Is he not great that maketh these things therefore great is the truth and stronger then all things 36 All the earth ‖ Or praiseth the truth Athanasius calleth upon the truth and the heaven blesseth it all works shake and tremble at it and with it is no unrighteous thing 37 Wine is wicked the king is wicked women are wicked all the children of men are wicked and such are all their wicked works and there is no truth in them in their unrighteousness also they shall perish 38 As for the truth it endureth and is always strong it liveth and conquereth for evermore 39 With her there is no accepting of persons or rewards but she doeth the things that are just and refraineth from all unjust and wicked things and all men do well like of her works 40 Neither in her judgement is any

IV. 2 John seeth the throne of God in heaven 4 The four and twenty elders 6 The four beasts full of eves before and behinde 10 The elders lay down their crowns and worship him that sat on the throne AFter this I looked and behold a door was opened in heaven and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me which said Come up hither and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter 2 And immediately I was in the spirit and behold a throne was set in heaven and one sat on the throne 3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper a sardine stone there was a rainbowe round about the throne in sight like unto an emerald 4 And round about the throne were four and twenty seats and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting clothed in white raiment and they had on their heads crowns of gold 5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thundrings and voices And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne which are the seven Spirits of God 6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal And in the midst of the throne and round about the throne were four beasts full of eyes before and behinde 7 And the first beast was like a lion and the second beast like a calf and the third beast had a face as a man and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle 8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him and they were full of eyes within and †Gr. they have no rest they rest not day and night saying * Isa 6.3 Holy holy holy Lord God Almighty which was and is is to come 9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne who liveth for ever and ever 10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne and worship him that liveth for ever and ever and cast their crowns before the throne saying 11 * Ch. 5.12 Thou art worthy O Lord to receive glory and honour and power for thou hast created all things and for thy pleasure they are and were created CHAP. V. 1 The book sealed with seven seals 9 which onely the Lamb that was slain is worthy to open 12 Therefore the elders praise him 9 and confess that he redeemed them with his blood ANd I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside sealed with seven seals 2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice Who is worthy to open the book and to loose the seals thereof 3 And no man in heaven nor in earth neither under the earth was able to open the book neither to look thereon 4 And I wept much because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book neither to look thereon 5 And one of the elders saith unto me Weep not behold * Gen. 19.9 the Lion of the tribe of Judah the root of David hath prevailed to open the book and to loose the seven seals thereof 6 And I behold and lo in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts and in the midst of the elders stood a Lamb as it had been slain having seven horns and seven eyes which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth 7 And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne 8 And when he had taken the book the four beasts and four and twenty eiders fell down before the Lamb having every one of them harps and golden vials full of ‖ Or inâ—nse odours which are the prayers of saints 9 And they sung a new song saying Thou art worthy to take the book and to open the seals thereof for thou wast slain and hast redeemed us to God by thy bloud out of every kindred and tongue and people and nation 10 * 1 Pet. 2.9 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests and we shall reign on the earth 11 And I beheld and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders and the number of them was * Dan. 7.10 ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands 12 Saying with a loud voice Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and blessing 13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under
