and_o moment_n that_o people_n ought_v to_o be_v frequent_o mind_v of_o it_o that_o the_o bishop_n and_o minister_n of_o religion_n ought_v frequent_o to_o preach_v of_o it_o and_o to_o press_v and_o inculcate_v it_o upon_o their_o hearer_n for_o it_o be_v a_o great_a scandal_n to_o the_o christian_a religion_n when_o this_o duty_n be_v not_o observe_v and_o yet_o in_o many_o case_n this_o duty_n be_v so_o hard_a to_o be_v observe_v &_o require_v such_o a_o great_a degree_n of_o self-denial_n and_o resignation_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o contempt_n of_o present_a thing_n that_o too_o many_o man_n be_v apt_a to_o forget_v it_o and_o to_o excuse_v themselves_o from_o it_o and_o therefore_o st._n paul_n give_v this_o in_o particular_a charge_n to_o titus_n and_o in_o he_o to_o all_o the_o bishop_n and_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o take_v special_a care_n to_o instruct_v people_n well_o in_o this_o point_n and_o frequent_o to_o renew_v and_o repeat_v their_o exhortation_n especial_o when_o they_o find_v a_o busy_a factious_a and_o seditious_a spirit_n abroad_o in_o the_o world_n thus_o he_o instruct_v timothy_n the_o bishop_n of_o ephesus_n 1_o tim._n 2._o 1._o i_o to_o pray_v for_o they_o and_o therefore_o though_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o pray_v for_o prince_n it_o do_v not_o hence_o follow_v that_o we_o may_v in_o no_o case_n lawful_o resist_v they_o in_o answer_n to_o this_o i_o grant_v that_o pray_v for_o any_o man_n nay_o pray_v for_o king_n and_o prince_n can_v of_o itself_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v unlawful_a to_o resist_v they_o if_o it_o understand_v those_o conditional_a prayer_n that_o god_n will_v convert_v or_o confound_v they_o a_o prayer_n which_o thanks_o be_v to_o god_n be_v never_o find_v in_o any_o christian_a liturgy_n yet_o which_o possible_o be_v one_o reason_n why_o some_o man_n be_v no_o great_a friend_n to_o liturgy_n and_o when_o the_o apostle_n direct_v they_o to_o pray_v for_o king_n and_o all_o that_o be_v in_o authority_n that_o they_o must_v live_v quiet_a and_o peaceable_a life_n in_o all_o godliness_n and_o honesty_n that_o be_v that_o they_o may_v enjoy_v peace_n and_o security_n in_o the_o profession_n and_o practice_n of_o the_o true_a religion_n this_o seem_v to_o imply_v that_o when_o they_o be_v persecute_v for_o their_o religion_n which_o be_v the_o case_n at_o that_o time_n they_o must_v pray_v for_o persecute_v prince_n that_o god_n will_v incline_v their_o heart_n to_o favour_v his_o people_n but_o must_v not_o fight_v against_o they_o this_o be_v the_o only_a direction_n the_o apostle_n give_v they_o in_o the_o case_n and_o we_o may_v reasonable_o suppose_v that_o have_v he_o know_v any_o other_o he_o will_v not_o have_v conceal_v it_o if_o it_o be_v always_o the_o duty_n of_o christian_n to_o pray_v for_o the_o prosperous_a and_o flourish_a state_n of_o the_o empire_n as_o by_o this_o apostolical_a exhortation_n it_o appear_v to_o be_v it_o can_v never_o be_v place_n to_o a_o more_o glorious_a kingdom_n time_n be_v when_o it_o be_v all_o one_o whether_o he_o save_v with_o many_o or_o a_o few_o he_o know_v how_o to_o destroy_v potent_a and_o formidable_a army_n without_o any_o humane_a strength_n and_o power_n or_o by_o such_o weak_a &_o contemptible_a mean_n as_o reserve_v the_o glory_n of_o the_o victory_n entire_a to_o himself_o and_o he_o be_v the_o same_o still_o that_o ever_o he_o be_v and_o his_o power_n be_v the_o same_o but_o st._n paul_n very_o well_o know_v that_o it_o be_v not_o lawful_a for_o they_o to_o pull_v emperor_n out_o of_o their_o throne_n to_o give_v any_o disturbance_n to_o civil_a power_n or_o to_o attempt_v any_o change_n or_o innovation_n in_o government_n and_o therefore_o since_o they_o must_v submit_v to_o such_o prince_n as_o they_o have_v there_o be_v no_o other_o remedy_n leave_v they_o but_o to_o beg_v of_o god_n so_o to_o incline_v the_o heart_n of_o prince_n that_o they_o may_v enjoy_v a_o quiet_a and_o peaceable_a possession_n of_o their_o religion_n even_o under_o pagan_a prince_n for_o as_o much_o as_o some_o man_n of_o late_a day_n profane_o scoff_v

all_o these_o quarrel_n be_v a_o mistake_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o christ_n kingdom_n they_o as_o well_o as_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o jew_n expect_v their_o messiah_n shall_v be_v a_o temporal_a prince_n and_o they_o be_v convince_v by_o the_o miracle_n of_o christ_n that_o he_o be_v indeed_o the_o messiah_n who_o be_v to_o come_v they_o live_v in_o daily_a expectation_n when_o he_o will_v take_v the_o kingdom_n upon_o himself_o and_o then_o they_o do_v not_o doubt_v but_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v the_o chief_a minister_n of_o state_n and_o have_v the_o great_a place_n of_o trust_n and_o power_n in_o his_o kingdom_n &_o this_o make_v they_o jealous_a of_o each_o other_o greatness_n and_o so_o forward_o to_o bespeak_v preferment_n for_o themselves_o now_o to_o cure_v these_o earthly_a ambition_n he_o tell_v they_o that_o his_o kingdom_n be_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o they_o dream_v of_o and_o that_o he_o have_v no_o such_o preferment_n for_o they_o as_o they_o expect_v earthly_a prince_n live_v in_o great_a pomp_n and_o splendour_n and_o have_v great_a place_n of_o trust_n and_o honour_n to_o bestow_v on_o their_o servant_n but_o they_o see_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o he_o he_o come_v not_o to_o be_v minister_v unto_o but_o to_o minister_v to_o live_v a_o mean_a industrious_a and_o laborious_a life_n and_o to_o die_v as_o a_o malefactor_n and_o give_v his_o his_o kingdom_n must_v be_v as_o humble_a as_o a_o child_n as_o he_o elsewhere_o tell_v they_o and_o as_o diligent_a and_o industrious_a and_o condescend_v as_o the_o mean_a servant_n and_o shall_v very_o often_o differ_v nothing_o from_o servant_n in_o their_o external_a fortune_n and_o condition_n of_o life_n this_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o what_o our_o saviour_n here_o teach_v his_o disciple_n and_o he_o be_v a_o wonderful_a man_n and_o very_o quick-sighted_a who_o can_v discover_v any_o reflection_n on_o civil_a power_n and_o authority_n in_o all_o this_o i_o shall_v only_o observe_v far_a that_o when_o our_o saviour_n call_v they_o here_o the_o prince_n and_o king_n of_o the_o gentile_n or_o nation_n he_o do_v not_o speak_v this_o in_o disparagement_n of_o they_o that_o they_o be_v only_o heathen_a and_o infidel_n prince_n who_o do_v this_o for_o there_o be_v no_o other_o prince_n at_o that_o time_n in_o the_o world_n heathen_a and_o pagan_a prince_n sound_v now_o as_o a_o note_n of_o infamy_n whereby_o they_o be_v distinguish_v from_o christian_a king_n and_o prince_n but_o the_o king_n of_o the_o gentile_n or_o nation_n in_o our_o saviour_n time_n signify_v no_o more_o than_o sovereign_a prince_n who_o be_v invest_v with_o civil_a authority_n and_o our_o saviour_n only_o distinguish_v between_o that_o civil_a power_n and_o authority_n which_o be_v exercise_v by_o secular_a prince_n and_o that_o spiritual_a kingdom_n which_o he_o be_v now_o about_o to_o erect_v in_o the_o world_n and_o the_o distinction_n have_v be_v of_o the_o same_o force_n though_o there_o have_v be_v at_o that_o time_n jewish_n or_o christian_a as_o well_o as_o heathen_a prince_n still_o the_o difference_n between_o civil_a and_o ecclesiastical_a authority_n be_v the_o same_o wilderness_n 2_o act_n 38._o either_o pretend_a to_o be_v the_o messiah_n or_o some_o forerunner_n of_o he_o to_o be_v sure_a such_o be_v those_o false_a christ_n and_o false_a prophet_n of_o who_o he_o perceive_v the_o people_n have_v a_o intention_n to_o take_v he_o by_o force_n and_o make_v he_o a_o king_n he_o withdraw_v himself_o private_o from_o they_o and_o depart_v into_o a_o mountain_n himself_o alone_o 6_o john_n 15._o and_o yet_o i_o presume_v there_o may_v have_v be_v as_o many_o plausible_a pretence_n to_o have_v justify_v a_o rebellion_n then_o as_o ever_o there_o be_v in_o
