A48813 An answer to the Bishop of Oxford's reasons for abrogating the test impos'd on all members of Parliament anno 1678, Octob. 30 in these words, I, A.B., do solemnly and sincerely, in the presence of God, profess, testifie, and declare, that I do believe that in the sacrament of the Lord's Supper there is not any transubstantiation of the elements of bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ at, or after the consecration thereof by any person whatsoever, and that the invocation of adoration of the Virgin Mary, or any other saint, and the sacrifice of the Dais, as they are now used in the Church of Rome, are superstitious and idolatrous / by a person of quality. that_o however_o it_o may_v receive_v occasion_n from_o it_o yet_o the_o essential_o of_o it_o be_v such_o sentiment_n as_o the_o nation_n have_v have_v for_o above_o the_o last_o hundred_o of_o year_n and_o that_o it_o have_v upon_o great_a judgement_n reason_n and_o experience_n confirm_v itself_o in_o and_o according_a to_o several_a emergency_n add_v to_o its_o security_n by_o law_n upon_o law_n against_o the_o regurgitation_n of_o that_o usurpation_n upon_o it_o not_o bare_o because_o of_o such_o emergency_n but_o because_o of_o that_o grand_a reason_n the_o very_a essence_n of_o popery_n have_v give_v it_o whether_o therefore_o the_o particular_a emergent_a have_v have_v dimension_n long_o and_o broad_a enough_o for_o the_o particular_a law_n and_o constitution_n which_o have_v be_v make_v be_v not_o so_o much_o consider_v but_o the_o whole_a nature_n of_o the_o evil_n fear_v and_o provide_v against_o be_v large_a enough_o to_o support_v such_o act_n it_o have_v give_v reason_n to_o all_o such_o provision_n and_o that_o be_v the_o danger_n of_o the_o roman_a religion_n resettle_v and_o reinstating_a itself_o in_o a_o protestant_a nation_n as_o the_o english_a nation_n be_v and_o have_v be_v for_o so_o great_a a_o space_n thus_o this_o last_o act_n for_o the_o test_n set_v before_o it_o only_o that_o so_o full_a and_o comprehensive_a consideration_n of_o the_o increase_n and_o danger_n of_o popery_n in_o this_o nation_n to_o which_o the_o former_a good_a law_n have_v prove_v ineffectual_a do_v therefore_o so_o enact_v as_o that_o act_n express_v in_o all_o which_o there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o reference_n to_o the_o so_o much_o infamed_a plot_n nor_o any_o line_n look_v towards_o it_o till_o therefore_o there_o be_v a_o change_n in_o the_o very_a essential_a nature_n of_o popery_n and_o a_o perfect_a nullity_n of_o all_o the_o fear_n arise_v from_o it_o make_v evident_a there_o must_v be_v this_o or_o that_o particular_a accidental_a cause_n quicken_a the_o legislative_a power_n of_o the_o nation_n to_o branch_n out_o itself_o into_o more_o and_o more_o and_o further_o and_o further_o particular_a law_n that_o may_v more_o effectual_o reach_v the_o intend_a point_n and_o be_v new_a in_o the_o particular_n observe_v where_o former_a provision_n be_v deficient_a and_o inefficacious_a which_o new_a law_n be_v not_o to_o be_v charge_v upon_o the_o lesser_a accidental_a cause_n but_o on_o the_o irreconcileableness_n of_o popery_n and_o its_o growth_n to_o the_o peace_n and_o welfare_n of_o a_o protestant_a nation_n and_o so_o i_o have_v finish_v what_o i_o think_v necessary_a upon_o the_o bishop_n second_o reason_n to_o show_v how_o inconcluding_n it_o be_v for_o the_o abrogate_a of_o the_o test._n i_o proceed_v now_o to_o the_o three_o reason_n the_o test_n ought_v to_o be_v repeal_v because_o of_o the_o incompetent_a authority_n 3_o by_o which_o it_o be_v enact_v for_o it_o be_v a_o law_n of_o a_o ecclesiastic_a nature_n make_v without_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o church_n contrary_a to_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o christian_a world_n in_o all_o age_n etc._n etc._n 1._o this_o reason_n rest_v upon_o these_o two_o principal_a pillar_n that_o the_o power_n of_o make_v decree_n concern_v divine_a verity_n be_v a_o legislative_a power_n give_v as_o the_o high_a act_n of_o government_n by_o christ_n commission_n to_o the_o officer_n of_o his_o own_o kingdom_n upon_o which_o the_o whole_a fabric_n of_o the_o christian_a church_n have_v hitherto_o stand_v and_o be_v to_o stand_v to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n and_o without_o which_o it_o must_v run_v into_o confusion_n and_o that_o to_o entrench_v upon_o this_o prerogative_n of_o the_o holy_a catholic_n church_n be_v to_o depose_v christ_n from_o his_o throne_n by_o disow_v neglect_v and_o affront_a his_o commission_n to_o his_o catholic_n church_n so_o that_o this_o power_n can_v be_v usurp_v without_o sacrilege_n and_o blasphemy_n and_o such_o a_o dare_a invasion_n of_o christ_n kingdom_n as_o that_o nothing_o more_o import_v christian_a king_n and_o governor_n than_o to_o be_v wary_a and_o cautious_a how_o they_o lay_v hand_n upon_o it_o 2._o that_o the_o bishop_n sit_v in_o the_o house_n of_o lord_n and_o to_o their_o shame_n consent_v to_o this_o law_n be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o make_v this_o law_n a_o act_n of_o church_n authority_n because_o it_o ought_v to_o have_v be_v first_o decree_v by_o their_o own_o proper_a authority_n without_o any_o lay_v concurrence_n and_o then_o to_o have_v come_v into_o parliament_n and_o as_o they_o judge_v sit_v to_o have_v be_v abet_v with_o temporal_a penalty_n a_o practice_n never_o violate_v but_o by_o aposlate_v and_o rebel_n parliament_n and_o last_o because_o particular_a bishop_n sit_v not_o in_o parliament_n by_o power_n derive_v from_o our_o bless_a saviour_n but_o by_o the_o mere_a grace_n and_o favour_n of_o the_o king_n so_o that_o the_o exercise_v any_o ecclesiastical_a authority_n in_o that_o place_n be_v scandalous_o to_o betray_v as_o much_o as_o in_o they_o lie_v the_o very_a be_v of_o a_o christian_a church_n and_o profane_o to_o pawn_v the_o bishop_n to_o the_o lord_n and_o last_o because_o the_o ecclesiastical_a power_n be_v by_o the_o law_n of_o england_n settle_v in_o convocation_n and_o therefore_o to_o enact_v any_o thing_n of_o a_o ecclesiastical_a nature_n without_o their_o consent_n be_v to_o betray_v the_o right_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n as_o by_o law_n establish_v in_o particular_a as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o church_n catholic_n in_o general_n but_o as_o a_o check_n and_o limitation_n to_o all_o this_o the_o episcopal_a author_n interpose_v the_o civil_a power_n may_v restrain_v the_o exercise_n of_o this_o ecclesiastical_a prerogative_n as_o they_o shall_v judge_v meet_a for_o the_o end_n of_o peace_n and_o the_o interest_n of_o the_o common_a wealth_n and_o punish_v it_o too_o at_o their_o own_o discretion_n if_o it_o shall_v at_o any_o time_n entrench_v upon_o the_o power_n of_o the_o state_n and_o it_o may_v prevent_v or_o correct_v abuse_n i_o have_v thus_o collect_v the_o strength_n of_o this_o whole_a reason_n without_o omit_v any_o thing_n i_o can_v think_v material_a i_o have_v also_o subjoin_v the_o limitation_n that_o it_o may_v be_v of_o the_o use_n the_o author_n design_v it_o and_o may_v also_o be_v consider_v in_o its_o place_n to_o our_o purpose_n there_o be_v three_o expression_n i_o desire_v in_o modesty_n and_o reverence_n to_o this_o r._n r._n author_n to_o draw_v a_o veil_n over_o 1._o that_o parenthetic_a to_o their_o shame_n viz._n the_o bishop_n shame_n who_o consent_v to_o the_o test-law_n because_o it_o seem_v so_o much_o to_o confine_v on_o speak_v evil_a of_o dignity_n and_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n 2_o lie_n upon_o that_o except_o by_o apostate_n and_o rebel-parliament_n as_o also_o because_o i_o will_v not_o know_v the_o direct_a meaning_n of_o those_o word_n but_o go_v backward_o to_o cast_v a_o cover_n over_o they_o 3._o on_o those_o word_n i_o draw_v the_o curtain_n profane_o pawn_v the_o bishop_n to_o the_o lord_n lest_o they_o seem_v rather_o fit_a to_o be_v retire_a among_o the_o bishop_n ludicra_fw-la but_o to_o the_o main_a purport_n and_o stress_n of_o the_o argument_n i_o shall_v undertake_v to_o rejoin_v these_o assertion_n 1._o that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o legislative_a power_n give_v by_o commission_n from_o christ_n to_o his_o church_n or_o make_v the_o foundation_n of_o it_o 2._o that_o all_o such_o pretension_n of_o church-power_n draw_v from_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o christian_a church_n be_v very_o invalid_a 3._o that_o the_o law_n of_o the_o test_n be_v not_o a_o law_n of_o a_o ecclesiastic_a nature_n 4._o and_o if_o it_o be_v the_o church_n of_o england_n have_v do_v enough_o in_o convocation_n and_o other_o church-act_n to_o support_v it_o 5._o that_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o bishop_n in_o parliament_n not_o protest_v against_o it_o be_v sufficient_a proof_n of_o the_o two_o last_o assertion_n 6._o that_o according_a to_o the_o bishop_n own_o limitation_n of_o church-power_n it_o must_v remain_v a_o good_a and_o necessary_a law_n and_o for_o which_o the_o parliament_n have_v competent_a authority_n i_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o 1._o that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o legislative_a power_n 1._o give_v by_o commission_n from_o christ_n to_o his_o church_n or_o make_v the_o foundation_n of_o it_o which_o may_v be_v demonstrate_v in_o this_o manner_n this_o legislative_a power_n of_o the_o church_n be_v most_o contrary_a to_o that_o holy_a book_n from_o whence_o we_o derive_v our_o christian_a sacred_a religion_n and_o to_o the_o sound_a reason_n guide_v by_o that_o for_o by_o that_o there_o be_v nor_o can_v be_v any_o legislative_a power_n in_o matter_n of_o divine_a verity_n but_o what_o be_v immediate_o from_o heaven_n either_o by_o voice_n from_o thence_o or_o by_o the_o
the_o essence_n of_o ecclesiastic_a law_n as_o they_o have_v be_v always_o solemnize_v and_o ratify_v in_o the_o christian-antichristianizing_a world_n upon_o light_a occasion_n but_o this_o test_n presume_v two_o thing_n suppose_v before_o to_o be_v sufficient_o certain_a 1._o that_o no_o romanist_n will_v deny_v his_o transubstantiation_n nor_o consent_n that_o his_o invocation_n of_o the_o virgin_n mary_n and_o of_o other_o saint_n and_o that_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o mass_n be_v superstitious_a and_o idolatrous_a the_o test_n do_v not_o determine_v nor_o pretend_v canonical_o to_o define_v of_o these_o thing_n it_o only_o propose_v this_o as_o a_o certain_a discovery_n of_o the_o votary_n of_o a_o foreign_a church_n nor_o do_v it_o mind_n to_o decide_v the_o truth_n of_o those_o matter_n it_o be_v enough_o to_o it_o to_o know_v who_o do_v or_o who_o do_v not_o assent_v to_o their_o presume_a truth_n and_o thereby_o to_o discover_v man_n not_o to_o decree_v point_n of_o faith._n 2._o nor_o be_v it_o ecclesiastic_a but_o pure_o civil_a and_o pertain_v to_o the_o state_n only_o who_o it_o will_v judge_v safe_a to_o commit_v the_o affair_n of_o this_o nation_n unto_o and_o into_o what_o hand_n to_o entrust_v its_o interest_n and_o have_v by_o more_o than_o a_o hundred_o year_n experience_n deem_v it_o not_o safe_a for_o a_o protestant_a nation_n to_o be_v overgrow_v by_o a_o papal_a power_n it_o have_v thus_o resolve_v and_o enact_v not_o at_o that_o time_n inquire_v after_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o thing_n concern_v in_o the_o test_n but_o satisfy_v with_o the_o assurance_n that_o a_o roman_n catholic_n as_o he_o be_v call_v will_v not_o assent_v to_o they_o as_o they_o be_v there_o lay_v which_o be_v here_o only_o take_v notice_n of_o as_o matter_n of_o state_n and_o their_o doctrinal_a truth_n it_o suppose_v elsewhere_o to_o have_v be_v sufficient_o ascertain_v as_o shall_v be_v afterward_o consider_v 4._o for_o indeed_o the_o church_n of_o england_n have_v both_o in_o convocation_n in_o continual_a print_a manifestation_n of_o its_o sense_n in_o daily_a preach_n and_o ministration_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n abundant_o and_o beyond_o all_o controversy_n open_v explain_v and_o assert_v concern_v these_o thing_n out_o of_o and_o according_a to_o scripture_n so_o that_o not_o in_o a_o humane_a light_n or_o determination_n but_o in_o the_o very_a beam_n of_o scripture_n and_o divine_a truth_n which_o be_v plain_o to_o be_v see_v stream_v from_o the_o fountain_n of_o light_a the_o word_n of_o god_n there_o be_v warranty_n enough_o without_o any_o invasion_n upon_o christ_n kingdom_n or_o the_o right_n of_o the_o officer_n of_o it_o suppose_v they_o what_o we_o can_v suppose_v rhem_n for_o a_o parliament_n safe_o to_o proceed_v as_o it_o do_v support_v by_o as_o many_o assurance_n as_o it_o can_v desire_v that_o if_o the_o lip_n of_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n preserve_v knowledge_n and_o that_o the_o law_n be_v to_o be_v inquire_v at_o its_o mouth_n the_o resolution_n of_o that_o church_n in_o all_o those_o case_n be_v sufficient_o know_v and_o no_o injury_n can_v be_v do_v to_o it_o 5._o of_o this_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o bishop_n in_o parliament_n not_o remonstrate_v nor_o protest_v against_o this_o law_n his_o consent_n however_o the_o author_n judge_n it_o to_o their_o shame_n be_v security_n enough_o that_o they_o understand_v the_o test-law_n to_o be_v no_o invasion_n of_o the_o right_n of_o the_o church_n but_o according_a to_o the_o whole_a doctrine_n and_o government_n of_o it_o as_o by_o law_n establish_v for_o see_v as_o have_v be_v before_o argue_v every_o body_n nor_o estate_n of_o man_n in_o parliament_n know_v so_o quick_a and_o feel_o for_o themselves_o and_o special_o such_o a_o body_n as_o the_o episcopacy_n of_o a_o nation_n it_o can_v never_o be_v suppose_v they_o will_v as_o by_o a_o common_a conspiracy_n agree_v to_o betray_v their_o own_o right_n and_o privilege_n have_v at_o hand_n always_o that_o freedom_n of_o enter_v their_o protestation_n of_o dissent_n so_o that_o although_o it_o be_v acknowledge_v they_o sit_v in_o parliament_n by_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o king_n and_o by_o the_o constitution_n of_o english_a parliament_n and_o not_o by_o power_n derive_v from_o christ_n nor_o as_o a_o convocation_n according_a to_o the_o law_n of_o england_n in_o that_o case_n yet_o it_o be_v always_o to_o be_v forethink_v that_o they_o sit_v with_o their_o understanding_n with_o their_o conscience_n with_o their_o sense_n with_o their_o sentiment_n of_o self-preservation_n about_o they_o and_o that_o therefore_o they_o will_v not_o be_v felones_n de_fw-fr se_fw-la by_o consent_v to_o the_o destruction_n of_o their_o noble_a right_n and_o on_o account_n of_o which_o they_o be_v judge_v worthy_a to_o sit_v as_o a_o estate_n and_o to_o vote_n in_o parliament_n viz._n as_o bishop_n of_o the_o church_n of_o jesus_n christ._n 6._o but_o last_o it_o can_v never_o be_v understand_v but_o that_o according_a to_o the_o bishop_n own_o limitation_n if_o that_o be_v the_o standard_n of_o church-power_n and_o prerogative_n or_o his_o set_n up_o another_o power_n and_o prerogative_n to_o mute_a it_o the_o parliament_n have_v well_o do_v in_o this_o test-law_n for_o see_v the_o civil_a power_n may_v restrain_v the_o exercise_n of_o ecclesiastical_a prerogative_n as_o they_o shall_v judge_n meet_v for_o the_o end_n of_o peace_n and_o the_o interest_n of_o the_o commonwealth_n and_o may_v punish_v it_o too_o at_o their_o own_o discretion_n if_o it_o shall_v at_o any_o time_n entrench_v upon_o the_o prerogative_n of_o the_o state_n and_o that_o it_o may_v prevent_v or_o correct_v prevent_v and_o correct_v abuse_n they_o must_v be_v able_a to_o judge_n of_o they_o they_o must_v determine_v when_o they_o lie_v they_o must_v judge_v also_o of_o the_o best_a mean_n to_o prevent_v they_o and_o what_o more_o liable_a to_o such_o judgement_n of_o abuse_n and_o to_o undergo_v the_o best_a and_o most_o effectual_a method_n of_o praevention_n than_o the_o thing_n to_o be_v declare_v against_o in_o the_o test_n as_o shall_v be_v manifest_o prove_v in_o the_o follow_a reason_n and_o see_v that_o upon_o these_o very_a account_n it_o be_v notorious_a that_o even_o in_o this_o nation_n church_n power_n and_o prerogative_n have_v swell_v beyond_o all_o bound_n and_o entrench_v with_o a_o vengeance_n upon_o the_o power_n of_o the_o state_n why_o then_o may_v not_o the_o and_o interest_n of_o the_o commonwealth_n and_o here_o i_o can_v but_o reflect_v upon_o the_o strange_a irreconcileableness_n of_o the_o bishop_n church-prerogative_n and_o of_o the_o civil_a power_n and_o despise_v the_o other_o but_o since_o the_o bishop_n must_v be_v reverence_v as_o a_o man_n of_o sense_n and_o reason_n certain_o it_o can_v be_v the_o roman_a holy_a catholic_a church_n that_o may_v be_v thus_o treat_v by_o the_o civil_a power_n nor_o be_v it_o any_o protestant_n civil_a prince_n or_o state_n that_o have_v these_o power_n but_o only_o a_o caesar_n or_o state_n of_o the_o roman_a character_n image_n and_o superscription_n have_v this_o power_n and_o only_o on_o protestant_a church_n under_o their_o dominion_n and_o so_o i_o pass_v with_o the_o fatigue_n of_o this_o confound_a perplex_v reason_n and_o come_v to_o the_o last_o but_o long_a reason_n which_o i_o shall_v yet_o but_o in_o brief_a consider_v the_o four_o reason_n for_o which_o the_o test-act_n ought_v to_o be_v repeal_v be_v because_o of_o the_o uncertainty_n and_o falsehood_n of_o the_o matter_n contain_v in_o the_o declaration_n itself_o as_o first_o that_o there_o be_v no_o transubstantiation_n in_o the_o sacrament_n of_o our_o saviour_n body_n and_o blood._n and_o second_o that_o the_o invocation_n of_o saint_n and_o of_o the_o mother_n of_o god_n be_v idolatry_n this_o reason_n so_o plain_o divide_v by_o the_o bishop_n into_o its_o two_o part_n that_o of_o transubstantiation_n and_o that_o of_o invocation_n of_o saint_n and_o of_o the_o mother_n of_o god_n must_v be_v distinct_o consider_v but_o before_o i_o proceed_v upon_o either_o of_o they_o i_o must_v needs_o object_v that_o this_o test_n be_v not_o fair_o quote_v for_o in_o so_o great_a a_o concern_v every_o word_n ought_v to_o have_v its_o due_a place_n and_o no_o pretence_n of_o keep_v the_o substance_n will_v justify_v the_o variation_n of_o a_o jota_n from_o the_o very_a letter_n except_o my_o apprehension_n exceed_o deceive_v i_o the_o sense_n be_v much_o more_o injure_a than_o the_o letter_n be_v vary_v indeed_o the_o author_n have_v be_v so_o fair_a as_o to_o prefix_v the_o text_n of_o the_o act_n that_o his_o unfair_a repetition_n may_v be_v convince_v by_o it_o but_o the_o unwary_a or_o unthinking_a reader_n may_v easy_o slide_v into_o error_n by_o it_o one_o be_v in_o the_o title-page_n where_o it_o may_v miss_v be_v consider_v the_o other_o in_o the_o body_n of_o the_o book_n observe_v then_o the_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o text_n of_o the_o test_n and_o the_o bishop_n quotation_n the_o test_n run_v thus_o i_o believe_v there_o be_v no_o etc._n etc._n the_o bishop_n quote_v as_o a_o proposition_n there_o be_v no_o etc._n etc._n it_o may_v be_v a_o much_o more_o uncertain_a proposition_n and_o more_o liable_a to_o falsehood_n to_o asfirm_v there_o be_v no_o transubstantiation_n in_o the_o sacrament_n of_o our_o saviour_n body_n and_o blood_n than_o so_o say_v i_o do_v believe_v there_o be_v none_o and_o so_o proportionable_o i_o believe_v be_v to_o be_v supply_v to_o the_o second_o member_n of_o the_o declaration_n viz._n and_o i_o believe_v that_o the_o invocation_n or_o adoration_n of_o etc._n etc._n now_o although_o i_o make_v no_o doubt_n that_o every_o christian_n ought_v to_o be_v full_o assure_v of_o the_o proposition_n themselves_o to_o be_v declare_v in_o the_o test_n yet_o plain_a and_o downright_o doctrinal_a proposition_n be_v not_o the_o proper_a subject_n of_o solemn_a sincere_a profession_n testification_n and_o declaration_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o god._n but_o such_o solemn_a sincere_a profession_n testification_n and_o declaration_n proper_o fall_v upon_o the_o belief_n of_o a_o man_n mind_n which_o he_o know_v and_o have_v judgement_n of_o as_o a_o rational_a man_n because_o they_o be_v within_o he_o for_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n know_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v within_o he_o so_o that_o a_o man_n belief_n that_o be_v within_o he_o may_v be_v well_o declare_v and_o testify_v even_o as_o all_o matter_n of_o sense_n and_o of_o trust_n and_o because_o they_o be_v within_o he_o know_v only_o to_o himself_o there_o be_v therefore_o many_o just_a occasion_n to_o declare_v and_o testify_v it_o to_o other_o of_o which_o the_o denial_n of_o lawful_a authority_n as_o a_o qualification_n for_o place_n of_o trust_n and_o power_n be_v just_o to_o be_v account_v among_o the_o principal_n and_o this_o very_a observation_n as_o it_o be_v plain_a and_o ground_v on_o undeniable_a evidence_n by_o a_o compute_v of_o the_o word_n of_o the_o test_n set_v down_o by_o the_o bishop_n himself_o in_o the_o title-page_n and_o four_o reason_n page_n 9_o do_v indeed_o make_v vain_a frivolous_a and_o of_o no_o possible_a avail_n or_o so_o much_o as_o significancie_n all_o that_o follow_v as_o to_o the_o test_n which_o be_v the_o thing_n in_o quaestion_n and_o under_o debate_n and_o bring_v it_o into_o this_o narrow_a compass_n whether_o person_n so_o devote_v to_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n may_v for_o the_o end_n of_o peace_n and_o the_o interest_n of_o a_o protestant_a commonwealth_n be_v seclude_v from_o power_n and_o trust_v by_o the_o consent_n of_o the_o major_a part_n of_o their_o own_o particular_a body_n and_o of_o each_o other_o body_n or_o estate_n of_o the_o nation_n and_o the_o supreme_a prince_n assent_v in_o so_o considerable_a and_o solemn_a a_o act_n as_o a_o act_n of_o parliament_n must_v needs_o be_v which_o have_v be_v already_o discourse_v for_o which_o soever_o side_n of_o the_o proposition_n shall_v be_v true_a yet_o still_o what_o a_o man_n within_o himself_o believe_v he_o true_o know_v and_o true_o may_v declare_v and_o testify_v and_o the_o business_n of_o the_o test_n be_v not_o to_o determine_v as_o have_v be_v say_v which_o part_n of_o either_o of_o the_o proposion_n be_v true_a but_o what_o belief_n each_o person_n admit_v to_o trust_n and_o power_n be_v of_o that_o so_o the_o nation_n as_o protestant_n may_v consult_v its_o own_o safety_n against_o the_o growth_n of_o popery_n into_o a_o national_a strength_n and_o interest_n and_o further_o confirm_v all_o that_o have_v be_v say_v that_o it_o be_v no_o ecclesiastic_a act_n but_o a_o pure_a perfect_a magistratic_a act_n as_o the_o administer_a a_o oath_n in_o all_o other_o case_n concern_v the_o trust_n of_o matter_n of_o faith_n be_v so_o that_o the_o affirm_v that_o those_o two_o proposition_n be_v by_o this_o law_n to_o be_v solemn_o and_o sincere_o in_o the_o praesence_n of_o god_n protest_v testify_v and_o declare_v be_v a_o downright_a unfaithfulness_n not_o to_o say_v out_o of_o reverence_n to_o the_o author_n falshood_n in_o the_o very_a sight_n of_o the_o sun_n in_o the_o sight_n if_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v of_o the_o frontispiece_n of_o the_o book_n which_o title-page_n give_v of_o necessity_n the_o lie_n to_o this_o nine_o page_n and_o be_v enough_o to_o discredit_v and_o to_o call_v into_o just_a suspicion_n the_o badness_n of_o the_o whole_a cause_n that_o be_v so_o insincere_o handle_v by_o a_o person_n of_o such_o a_o character_n of_o dignity_n and_o sacredness_n of_o office_n as_o a_o christian_a bishop_n who_o ought_v to_o do_v so_o much_o otherwise_o but_o this_o be_v not_o all_o the_o unfaithfulness_n of_o the_o episcopal_a author_n in_o recount_v the_o test_n he_o be_v argue_v against_o for_o whereas_o the_o declaration_n in_o the_o act_n run_v thus_o i_o believe_v that_o in_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n there_o be_v not_o any_o transubstantiation_n of_o the_o element_n of_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n into_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n etc._n etc._n the_o bishop_n represent_v his_o proposition_n thus_o that_o there_o be_v no_o transubstantiation_n in_o the_o sacrament_n of_o our_o saviour_n body_n and_o blood._n now_o it_o be_v easy_a for_o every_o person_n that_o do_v but_o in_o the_o lest_o apply_v his_o mind_n to_o it_o to_o perceive_v that_o the_o test_n leave_v it_o free_a to_o every_o person_n to_o frame_v any_o mystical_a spiritual_a analogical_a figurative_a sense_n in_o his_o own_o thought_n concern_v transubstantiation_n and_o which_o may_v sufficient_o satisfy_v and_o exhaust_v the_o sense_n of_o more_o than_o most_o word_n of_o the_o greek_a father_n import_n for_o it_o be_v observabl_a they_o have_v no_o word_n strict_o greek_n for_o transubstantion_n and_o only_o foreprize'_v
