A64939 A review and examination of a book bearing the title of The history of the indulgence wherein the lawfulness of the acceptance of the peaceable exercise of the ministry granted by the Acts of the magistrates indulgence is demonstrated, contrary objections answered, and the vindication of such as withdraw from hearing indulged ministers is confuted : to which is added a survey of the mischievous absurdities of the late bond and Sanquhair declaration. please_v be_v impertinent_o bring_v in_o under_o this_o head_n for_o he_o be_v speak_v of_o instruction_n set_v down_o in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o which_o be_v concern_v thing_n at_o all_o time_n necessary_a to_o the_o right_a exercise_n of_o the_o ministry_n if_o the_o magistrate_n will_v give_v only_o such_o injunction_n i_o suppose_v few_o will_v complain_v for_o all_o grant_n that_o the_o magistrate_n may_v put_v minister_n to_o do_v their_o necessary_a duty_n prescribe_v to_o they_o in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o to_o the_o alterable_a circumstance_n he_o exclude_v the_o magistrate_n from_o any_o power_n in_o reference_n to_o these_o but_o he_o do_v not_o prove_v what_o he_o say_v for_o though_o the_o church_n have_v power_n to_o determine_v such_o circumstance_n according_a to_o the_o general_a rule_n of_o the_o word_n it_o will_v not_o follow_v that_o the_o magistrate_n have_v no_o power_n in_o reference_n to_o these_o circumstance_n if_o he_o have_v say_v that_o the_o church_n only_o have_v that_o power_n and_o prove_v what_o he_o say_v he_o will_v have_v say_v something_o if_o the_o church_n have_v power_n say_v he_o by_o what_o law_n can_v the_o church_n be_v rob_v of_o that_o power_n give_v by_o christ_n they_o will_v easy_o answer_v that_o the_o magistrate_n may_v have_v power_n in_o reference_n to_o some_o circumstance_n and_o exercise_v that_o power_n and_o yet_o not_o rob_v the_o church_n of_o any_o power_n which_o christ_n have_v give_v to_o it_o for_o both_o the_o magistrate_n and_o church_n may_v have_v some_o power_n in_o reference_n to_o these_o common_a circumstance_n and_o exercise_v it_o and_o yet_o not_o rob_v one_o another_o of_o the_o power_n which_o they_o have_v as_o there_o be_v some_o commons_o for_o pasturage_n which_o all_o person_n in_o the_o adjacent_a bound_n may_v make_v use_n of_o for_o pasturage_n and_o yet_o not_o rob_v one_o another_o then_o he_o question_n by_o what_o right_a can_v the_o judgement_n of_o this_o matter_n be_v commit_v in_o prima_fw-la instantia_fw-la at_o the_o very_a first_o unto_o the_o magistrate_n or_o rather_o whole_o and_o sole_o to_o he_o but_o this_o question_n alter_v the_o state_n of_o the_o question_n for_o the_o magistrate_n may_v have_v power_n in_o reference_n to_o these_o circumstance_n though_o he_o have_v not_o the_o sole_a power_n the_o author_n of_o the_o late_a apology_n pag._n 169._o &_o 170._o show_n that_o both_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n may_v upon_o the_o dispensation_n of_o mercy_n and_o judgement_n call_v for_o thanksgiving_n or_o humiliation_n indict_v day_n of_o humiliation_n and_o thanksgiving_n and_o acknowledge_v that_o for_o more_o harmony_n in_o this_o public_a work_n and_o convenient_a follow_v of_o it_o with_o benefit_n and_o advantage_n to_o church_n and_o state_n it_o be_v expedient_a that_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n do_v previous_o consult_v and_o pag._n 167_o 168._o he_o show_v that_o magistrate_n may_v convocate_v synod_n but_o this_o be_v not_o privative_a of_o the_o power_n of_o church-officer_n who_o may_v and_o aught_o to_o come_v together_o of_o themselves_o as_o the_o necessity_n of_o the_o church_n require_v the_o author_n of_o the_o answer_n to_o the_o history_n of_o the_o indulgence_n have_v very_o rational_o show_v that_o if_o the_o magistrate_n appoint_v the_o thursday_n of_o any_o week_n to_o be_v a_o muster-day_n in_o every_o parish_n of_o his_o dominion_n he_o may_v discharge_v any_o public_a sermon_n upon_o that_o thursday_n this_o be_v a_o extrinsical_a circumstantial_a regulate_v or_o limit_v of_o the_o public_a exercise_n of_o the_o ministry_n which_o can_v in_o reason_n be_v deny_v to_o the_o magistrate_n who_o find_v it_o necessary_a to_o have_v a_o muster_n of_o all_o his_o subject_n who_o be_v fit_a to_o carry_v arm_n in_o one_o day_n to_o give_v the_o magistrate_n a_o unlimited_a power_n in_o circumstantial_o be_v to_o give_v he_o a_o destructive_a power_n for_o so_o he_o may_v appoint_v a_o house_n for_o public_a worship_n which_o will_v not_o contain_v the_o three_o part_n of_o the_o parish_n and_o to_o give_v he_o no_o power_n in_o reference_n to_o circumstantial_o be_v unreasonable_a and_o to_o imagine_v the_o march_n betwixt_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n can_v be_v mathematical_o define_v and_o bring_v to_o a_o very_a mathematical_a point_n be_v a_o conceit_n that_o will_v not_o ready_o come_v in_o the_o head_n of_o any_o man_n who_o have_v read_v and_o understand_v any_o thing_n of_o these_o question_n and_o i_o perceive_v the_o historian_n himself_o have_v a_o latitude_n to_o come_v and_o go_v upon_o for_o pag._n 81_o &_o 82._o where_o he_o say_v and_o i_o shall_v willing_o grant_v that_o what_o agree_v to_o magistrate_n as_o such_o agree_v to_o all_o magistrate_n good_a and_o bad_a yet_o it_o may_v be_v maintain_v that_o more_o may_v be_v allow_v in_o such_o magistrate_n as_o be_v real_o mind_v reformation_n etc._n etc._n than_o in_o such_o as_o be_v open_a enemy_n thereunto_o etc._n etc._n and_o i_o suppose_v this_o be_v one_o reason_n of_o difference_n among_o divine_n in_o these_o matter_n some_o who_o have_v live_v under_o reform_v magistrate_n have_v allow_v more_o and_o other_o who_o have_v live_v under_o magistrate_n who_o abuse_v their_o power_n have_v allow_v less_o and_o when_o these_o concession_n be_v calculate_v according_a to_o the_o disposition_n of_o ruler_n which_o be_v so_o variable_a and_o not_o according_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o nature_n and_o end_n of_o the_o magistratical_a and_o ministerial_a office_n what_o wonder_n if_o their_o concession_n vary_v one_o from_o another_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v consider_v it_o be_v no_o wonder_n that_o these_o brethren_n think_v it_o convenient_a to_o add_v the_o clause_n formal_o and_o intrinsical_o ecclesiastical_a to_o cast_v off_o the_o cavil_n of_o these_o who_o will_v have_v allege_v that_o the_o assertion_n without_o this_o do_v deny_v all_o power_n to_o the_o magistrate_n about_o the_o extrinsic_a circumstantial_o of_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o ministry_n and_o thus_o i_o have_v give_v some_o reason_n why_o there_o be_v so_o much_o debate_n about_o that_o general_a thesis_n the_o brethren_n who_o be_v present_a at_o the_o debate_n can_v no_o doubt_n say_v much_o more_o than_o either_o ●e_n or_o i_o can_v dream_v of_o for_o there_o be_v many_o there_o who_o can_v have_v teach_v both_o he_o and_o i_o in_o these_o matter_n or_o in_o any_o theologick_n question_n in_o word_v of_o the_o assertion_n they_o be_v to_o look_v not_o only_o to_o the_o salve_v of_o their_o credit_n and_o conscience_n among_o their_o friend_n who_o will_v candid_o interpret_v their_o word_n but_o also_o to_o obviate_v the_o cavil_n of_o adversary_n who_o be_v wait_v for_o their_o halt_n and_o will_v have_v be_v glad_a of_o any_o pretext_n to_o have_v render_v they_o odious_a to_o the_o magistrate_n the_o historian_n go_v on_o in_o that_o 65_o pag._n upon_o that_o supposition_n that_o the_o assertion_n be_v thus_o qualify_v to_o justify_v their_o accept_n of_o these_o rule_n and_o upon_o this_o supposition_n he_o infer_v that_o then_o the_o cause_n sure_o be_v betray_v etc._n etc._n uno_fw-la absurdo_fw-la dato_fw-la mille_fw-la sequuntur_fw-la if_o you_o will_v give_v he_o leave_v to_o lay_v a_o foundation_n in_o the_o air_n of_o his_o own_o fancy_n he_o will_v build_v castle_n in_o the_o air_n but_o it_o be_v a_o very_a idle_a work_n for_o i_o to_o spend_v time_n in_o cast_v down_o these_o castle_n which_o have_v no_o foundation_n but_o his_o false_a imagination_n further_a say_v he_o i_o suppose_v it_o will_v be_v find_v that_o some_o of_o these_o instruction_n be_v indeed_o formal_o and_o intrinsical_o ecclesiastical_a and_o if_o these_o be_v except_v they_o shall_v have_v be_v particular_o mention_v that_o all_o may_v have_v be_v clear_a answ_n then_o the_o addition_n of_o the_o word_n formal_o and_o intrinsical_o ecclesiastical_a to_o the_o assertion_n do_v exclude_v these_o and_o all_o of_o that_o nature_n and_o so_o be_v add_v to_o good_a purpose_n and_o why_o then_o will_v he_o not_o have_v subscribe_v this_o paper_n or_o use_v it_o for_o a_o directory_n be_v it_o the_o worse_a that_o it_o do_v direct_o exclude_v these_o rule_n which_o do_v entrench_v most_o upon_o the_o ministerial_a office_n if_o he_o say_v that_o the_o except_v of_o these_o be_v a_o accept_n of_o the_o rest_n i_o answer_v he_o grant_v that_o mr._n b._n refuse_v all_o and_o that_o mr._n h._n say_v the_o same_o upon_o the_o matter_n with_o mr._n b._n and_o therefore_o all_o be_v refuse_v the_o confinement_n with_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o injunction_n be_v speak_v against_o by_o mr._n h._n as_o imposition_n burden_v their_o ministry_n and_o reason_n give_v why_o their_o ministry_n shall_v not_o be_v burden_v with_o these_o imposition_n and_o the_o
that_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n be_v keep_v pure_a and_o entire_a that_o all_o blasphemy_n and_o heresy_n be_v suppress_v all_o corruption_n and_o abuse_n in_o worship_n and_o discipline_n prevent_v or_o reform_v and_o all_o ordinance_n of_o god_n due_o settle_v administer_v and_o observe_v for_o the_o better_a effect_v whereof_o he_o have_v power_n to_o call_v synod_n to_o be_v present_a at_o they_o and_o to_o provide_v that_o whatsoever_o be_v transact_v in_o they_o be_v according_a to_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n thus_o may_v they_o say_v the_o confession_n of_o faith_n acknowledge_v that_o the_o magistrate_n have_v authority_n for_o do_v much_o in_o reference_n to_o the_o reformation_n and_o preservation_n of_o religion_n but_o we_o hear_v nothing_o from_o you_o of_o any_o power_n the_o magistrate_n have_v in_o reference_n to_o matter_n of_o religion_n you_o only_o tell_v what_o the_o magistrate_n may_v not_o do_v in_o reference_n to_o you_o and_o the_o exercise_n of_o your_o ministry_n and_o be_v this_o all_o the_o respect_n you_o have_v to_o authority_n now_o this_o and_o much_o more_o will_v have_v be_v object_v and_o have_v not_o mr._n h._n then_o very_o good_a reason_n to_o add_v this_o second_o part_n of_o his_o discourse_n the_o learned_a and_o judicious_a author_n or_o author_n of_o the_o course_n of_o conformity_n see_v it_o necessary_a after_o they_o have_v show_v what_o the_o magistrate_n may_v not_o do_v in_o matter_n of_o religion_n to_o subjoin_v a_o discourse_n show_v what_o they_o may_v do_v and_o because_o the_o book_n be_v not_o common_a i_o shall_v transcribe_v somewhat_o to_o this_o purpose_n page_n 147_o 148_o 149._o you_o will_v see_v how_o tender_a they_o be_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o god_n and_o how_o respectful_a also_o to_o lawful_a authority_n they_o show_v pag._n 147._o that_o no_o man_n may_v command_v what_o he_o will_v in_o any_o controvert_v matter_n ecclesiastical_a and_o then_o they_o relate_v this_o history_n when_o alexander_n the_o great_a come_v to_o jerusalem_n he_o desire_v his_o image_n to_o be_v erect_v in_o the_o temple_n the_o high_a priest_n be_v willing_a to_o please_v he_o in_o any_o thing_n wherein_o god_n be_v not_o displease_v and_o therefore_o refuse_v with_o all_o reverence_n that_o idolatry_n what_o he_o may_v and_o what_o serve_v more_o for_o the_o king_n honour_n he_o offer_v cheerful_o first_o to_o begin_v the_o account_n of_o their_o time_n from_o his_o entry_n into_o jerusalem_n and_o 2._o to_o name_v all_o their_o first-born_a son_n alexander_n from_o he_o then_o they_o add_v what_o be_v civil_a what_o be_v domestic_a what_o be_v caesar_n what_o be_v we_o let_v they_o be_v forbid_v water_n and_o fire_n and_o their_o city_n sow_o with_o salt_n who_o refuse_v it_o let_v christ_n royal_a prerogative_n who_o will_v not_o give_v his_o glory_n to_o another_o be_v keep_v for_o himself_o may_v we_o not_o in_o so_o narrow_a a_o strait_n where_o we_o can_v see_v no_o way_n to_o turn_v neither_o to_o the_o right_a hand_n nor_o to_o the_o left_a open_a our_o mouth_n with_o the_o obedient_a ass_n have_v we_o use_v to_o serve_v so_o in_o other_o matter_n then_o they_o cite_v peter_n martyr_n who_o show_v that_o if_o a_o minister_n teach_v or_o administer_v the_o sacrament_n against_o the_o word_n of_o god_n he_o be_v to_o be_v repress_v by_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n and_o yet_o not_o from_o he_o but_o from_o the_o word_n of_o god_n shall_v he_o seek_v the_o rule_n and_o reason_n of_o his_o function_n and_o then_o they_o cite_v franciscus_n junius_n say_v 1._o by_o what_o authority_n or_o example_n be_v the_o magistrate_n move_v to_o think_v that_o the_o holy_a kirk_n of_o god_n and_o the_o simplicity_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o christ_n who_o voice_n alone_o his_o sheep_n know_v and_o follow_v because_o the_o father_n command_v that_o it_o shall_v be_v hear_v only_o john_n 10.27_o shall_v be_v clothe_v about_o with_o humane_a tradition_n 2._o to_o what_o end_n think_v he_o must_v his_o thing_n be_v sow_v unto_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n for_o if_o it_o be_v that_o she_o may_v be_v conform_a to_o other_o it_o be_v more_o equitable_a that_o other_o kirk_n shall_v conform_v to_o they_o who_o come_v near_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n according_a to_o cyprian_n counsel_n not_o that_o they_o shall_v join_v themselves_o to_o other_o kirk_n if_o it_o be_v that_o all_o thing_n may_v be_v more_o decent_a what_o can_v be_v more_o decent_a than_o the_o simplicity_n of_o christ_n what_o more_o simple_a than_o his_o decency_n if_o it_o be_v fulfil_n of_o his_o own_o will_n let_v it_o be_v so_o but_o it_o must_v be_v remember_v that_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v the_o great_a necessity_n and_o that_o the_o kirk_n of_o god_n in_o thing_n divine_a be_v not_o subject_a to_o the_o will_n of_o man_n and_o what_o event_n may_v follow_v upon_o humane_a tradition_n as_o daily_a experience_n have_v show_v then_o archippus_n except_v say_v you_o ever_o tell_v i_o what_o he_o shall_v not_o do_v but_o i_o will_v hear_v something_o positive_a of_o his_o power_n in_o thing_n ecclesiastical_a what_o he_o shall_v and_o may_v do_v in_o time_n of_o contention_n especial_o epaphras_n answer_v that_o be_v not_o my_o part_n you_o know_v yet_o this_o i_o may_v say_v that_o as_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o heresy_n so_o in_o the_o time_n of_o schism_n for_o matter_n of_o ceremony_n the_o magistrate_n call_v a_o synod_n represent_v the_o whole_a kirk_n have_v power_n definitive_a and_o the_o judgement_n of_o jurisdiction_n according_a to_o the_o word_n right_o as_o natural_o in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n to_o make_v it_o plain_a by_o a_o comparison_n the_o imperial_a power_n of_o the_o will_n may_v command_v the_o understanding_n quoad_fw-la exercitium_fw-la that_o be_v to_o pause_v upon_o a_o certain_a purpose_n and_o to_o give_v her_o determination_n but_o not_o quoad_fw-la specificationem_fw-la that_o be_v to_o assent_v or_o dissent_v or_o to_o determine_v to_o the_o one_o side_n more_o than_o to_o the_o other_o and_o as_o the_o same_o will_n have_v actum_fw-la elicitum_fw-la as_o her_o essential_a and_o most_o proper_a operation_n and_o actum_fw-la imperatum_fw-la produce_v by_o another_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n at_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o will_n as_o the_o understanding_n to_o ponder_v and_o consider_v the_o appetite_n to_o exercise_v temperance_n fortitude_n etc._n etc._n and_o out_o of_o her_o desire_n and_o choice_n of_o the_o sovereign_n good_a of_o the_o soul_n and_o body_n set_v all_o the_o power_n of_o soul_n and_o body_n to_o work_v even_o so_o the_o magistrate_n have_v actum_fw-la elicitum_fw-la in_o civil_a affair_n his_o essential_a and_o most_o proper_a object_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o god_n kirk_n whether_o for_o order_n or_o jurisdiction_n albeit_o he_o have_v not_o actum_fw-la elicitum_fw-la he_o may_v neither_o preach_v the_o word_n nor_o minister_v the_o sacrament_n nor_o define_v by_o himself_o regular_o yet_o he_o have_v actum_fw-la imperatum_fw-la he_o may_v command_v minister_n to_o preach_v the_o word_n to_o celebrate_v the_o sacrament_n and_o to_o convene_v and_o determine_v according_a to_o the_o word_n archip._n and_o say_v you_o no_o more_o be_v that_o all_o epaphras_n and_o more_o than_o this_o he_o have_v in_o all_o ecclesiastical_a canon_n or_o conclusion_n a_o threefold_a judgement_n one_o common_a as_o a_o christian_a another_o proper_a as_o a_o magistrate_n the_o three_o personal_n as_o a_o man_n singular_o gift_v as_o a_o christian_n the_o judgement_n of_o discretion_n that_o he_o believe_v not_o or_o practise_v any_o thing_n of_o all_o that_o which_o the_o kirk_n conclude_v if_o he_o find_v it_o to_o be_v against_o the_o word_n as_o a_o magistrate_n he_o must_v have_v the_o judgement_n of_o his_o vocation_n to_o discern_v what_o concern_v the_o spiritual_a weal_n and_o salvation_n of_o his_o subject_n and_o according_o to_o add_v or_o suspend_v the_o sanction_n and_o as_o a_o singular_a magistrate_n have_v more_o than_o ordinary_a gift_n of_o knowledge_n and_o piety_n he_o ought_v to_o have_v such_o interest_n in_o determination_n and_o jurisdiction_n with_o the_o kirk_n as_o other_o who_o have_v more_o than_o ordinary_a gift_n thus_o we_o see_v these_o godly_a learned_a minister_n see_v it_o necessary_a to_o show_v not_o only_o what_o power_n the_o magistrate_n have_v not_o but_o also_o positive_o what_o power_n he_o have_v in_o thing_n ecclesiastical_a and_o divine_v general_o who_o treat_v of_o these_o matter_n use_v to_o do_v so_o for_o prevent_a mistake_n in_o so_o ticklish_a a_o matter_n and_o therefore_o mr._n h._n do_v as_o become_v a_o godly_a learned_a and_o wise_a man_n and_o a_o man_n who_o have_v a_o tender_a respect_n to_o lawful_a authority_n and_o that_o from_o a_o principle_n of_o conscience_n he_o speak_v against_o all_o the_o magistrate_n imposition_n which_o burden_v their_o
20._o servant_n be_v subject_a to_o your_o master_n with_o all_o fear_n not_o only_o to_o the_o good_a but_o to_o the_o froward_a or_o perverse_a as_o it_o be_v also_o render_v this_o scripture_n be_v cite_v in_o the_o large_a catechism_n in_o explication_n of_o the_o five_o commandment_n to_o show_v what_o be_v the_o honour_n that_o inferior_n owe_v to_o superior_n if_o the_o miscarriage_n of_o be_v cut_v off_o from_o those_o who_o take_v advantage_n from_o those_o excess_n to_o render_v the_o magistrate_n contemptible_a and_o to_o overthrow_v that_o power_n which_o they_o have_v from_o god_n as_o for_o what_o they_o say_v of_o minister_n hinder_v those_o who_o will_v have_v give_v a_o testimony_n and_o censure_v other_o who_o do_v give_v it_o the_o truth_n be_v presbyterian_a minister_n endeavour_v to_o restrain_v some_o young_a man_n who_o instead_o of_o preach_v the_o gospel_n make_v it_o their_o work_n to_o revile_v the_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n who_o make_v use_v of_o the_o liberty_n grant_v by_o the_o magistrate_n but_o these_o youth_n discover_v themselves_o not_o to_o be_v of_o presbyterian_a principle_n by_o their_o refuse_v to_o be_v subordinate_a to_o the_o minister_n and_o by_o reproach_v they_o who_o will_v have_v reclaim_v they_o from_o their_o disorderly_a and_o schismatic_a practice_n by_o this_o the_o magistrate_n may_v perceive_v if_o the_o presbyterian_a minister_n who_o be_v presbyterian_o indeed_o have_v by_o allowance_n of_o the_o magistrate_n the_o peaceable_a exercise_n of_o their_o ministry_n and_o liberty_n of_o meeting_n for_o regulate_v their_o own_o act_n and_o the_o act_n of_o those_o who_o profess_v themselves_o to_o be_v presbyterian_o such_o unruly_a person_n who_o stir_v up_o the_o people_n to_o schism_n and_o sedition_n will_v not_o be_v admit_v to_o the_o ministry_n or_o if_o they_o after_o their_o admission_n discover_v themselves_o to_o be_v of_o pernicious_a principle_n they_o will_v be_v put_v from_o the_o ministry_n and_o so_o the_o people_n who_o be_v true_a to_o presbyterian_a principle_n will_v not_o own_v they_o and_o so_o they_o will_v not_o have_v access_n to_o pervert_v the_o people_n with_o seditious_a and_o schismatic_a doctrine_n this_o will_v be_v find_v the_o most_o proper_a remedy_n for_o these_o distemper_n but_o what_o wonder_n be_v it_o if_o young_a man_n who_o be_v ordinary_o rash_a be_v but_o novice_n who_o have_v not_o study_v the_o body_n of_o divinity_n and_o who_o have_v no_o experience_n and_o know_v not_o the_o principle_n and_o practice_n of_o presbyterial_a government_n who_o be_v not_o put_v ro_o presbyterial_a exercise_n for_o their_o trial_n and_o instruction_n and_o who_o it_o may_v be_v have_v never_o see_v any_o thing_n of_o the_o exercise_n of_o presbyterial_a government_n in_o presbytery_n or_o synod_n and_o who_o be_v not_o under_o the_o inspection_n of_o meeting_n of_o presbyterian_o but_o wander_v to_o and_o fro_o at_o random_n not_o think_v themselves_o accountable_a to_o any_o meeting_n of_o minister_n nor_o censurable_a by_o any_o what_o wonder_n be_v it_o if_o such_o person_n when_o they_o be_v blow_v up_o with_o the_o vain_a applause_n of_o some_o ignorant_a and_o humorous_a people_n who_o under_o their_o sad_a suffering_n have_v take_v up_o such_o prejudice_n against_o the_o magistrate_n and_o all_o to_o who_o the_o magistrate_n show_v any_o favour_n that_o they_o think_v what_o be_v most_o cross_a to_o the_o magistrate_n be_v most_o right_a and_o any_o thing_n which_o the_o magistrate_n allow_v they_o think_v it_o wrong_n and_o so_o they_o cry_v up_o those_o preacher_n most_o who_o speak_v most_o invectively_o against_o the_o magistrate_n and_o against_o those_o minister_n to_o who_o the_o magistrate_n show_v any_o favour_n i_o say_v what_o wonder_n be_v
who_o do_v not_o think_v themselves_o oblige_v to_o give_v in_o a_o write_a or_o verbal_a confession_n testimony_n or_o protestation_n against_o the_o supremacy_n and_o the_o invasion_n make_v upon_o the_o government_n of_o the_o church_n and_o yet_o the_o author_n of_o this_o epistle_n urge_v none_o of_o these_o with_o his_o query_n but_o only_o the_o indulge_v minister_n though_o they_o have_v somewhat_o to_o say_v for_o their_o forbearance_n of_o any_o such_o protestation_n which_o other_o have_v not_o seeing_z they_o be_v call_v to_o the_o council_n in_o a_o time_n when_o the_o magistrate_n be_v relent_v somewhat_o as_o to_o the_o severity_n former_o use_v and_o they_o be_v call_v to_o get_v some_o relaxation_n from_o the_o restraint_n lay_v former_o upon_o they_o and_o their_o irritate_v of_o the_o magistrate_n may_v not_o only_o have_v prejudge_v themselves_o of_o that_o freedom_n but_o also_o have_v be_v prejudicial_a to_o other_o who_o be_v in_o expectation_n of_o it_o who_o may_v very_o ready_o have_v blame_v they_o for_o their_o imprudency_n in_o tri_a their_o protestation_n with_o that_o season_n not_o only_o to_o their_o own_o prejudice_n but_o to_o the_o prejudice_n of_o other_o and_o i_o leave_v it_o to_o the_o consideration_n of_o indifferent_a person_n whether_o or_o not_o the_o magistrate_n will_v in_o all_o probability_n have_v say_v these_o man_n and_o other_o of_o they_o make_v no_o protestation_n against_o we_o when_o we_o turn_v they_o out_o and_o subvert_v their_o government_n but_o now_o when_o we_o begin_v to_o show_v favour_n to_o any_o of_o they_o they_o grow_v more_o insolent_a and_o therefore_o it_o be_v best_a policy_n to_o forbear_v our_o favour_n and_o to_o use_v severity_n and_o see_v all_o these_o brethren_n and_o the_o whole_a presbyterian_o in_o scotland_n be_v concern_v in_o the_o invasion_n make_v upon_o the_o church_n and_o be_v concern_v in_o the_o bad_a effect_n that_o may_v have_v follow_v upon_o the_o irritation_n of_o the_o magistrate_n in_o that_o juncture_n of_o affair_n if_o it_o have_v be_v fit_a for_o a_o few_o private_a minister_n without_o the_o concurrence_n of_o all_o concern_v or_o at_o lest_o without_o their_o counsel_n and_o advice_n to_o have_v give_v in_o such_o a_o testimony_n or_o protestation_n as_o the_o author_n require_v and_o it_o be_v well_o know_v that_o no_o such_o concurrence_n be_v offer_v nor_o such_o advice_n give_v to_o these_o minister_n by_o the_o rest_n of_o their_o judgement_n who_o be_v concern_v in_o this_o matter_n i_o shall_v not_o repeat_v what_o the_o author_n of_o the_o answer_n to_o the_o countryman_z scruple_n anent_o the_o indulgence_n have_v say_v concern_v testimony_n in_o which_o he_o have_v show_v from_o scripture_n and_o solid_a reason_n the_o rashness_n and_o unreasonableness_n of_o those_o who_o have_v condemn_v the_o suffer_a minister_n and_o the_o indulge_v minister_n for_o not_o give_v testimony_n he_o have_v excellent_o discover_v from_o scripture_n when_o testimony_n be_v to_o be_v give_v and_o when_o not_o when_o they_o be_v seasonable_a and_o when_o unseasonable_a he_o have_v also_o show_v how_o write_v testimony_n which_o synod_n have_v prepare_v when_o prelacy_n be_v come_v in_o particular_o the_o synod_n of_o fife_n be_v obstruct_v by_o the_o magistrate_n raise_v of_o these_o synod_n and_o that_o they_o who_o have_v no_o clearness_n to_o make_v any_o use_n of_o the_o indulgence_n do_v obstruct_v the_o write_a testimony_n which_o be_v prepare_v against_o the_o evil_n which_o be_v in_o the_o complex_fw-la act_n which_o relate_v to_o the_o indulgence_n he_o have_v also_o show_v how_o many_o testimony_n have_v be_v give_v by_o word_n in_o preach_v and_o before_o the_o council_n and_o by_o suffering_n and_o by_o not_o obey_v the_o instruction_n of_o the_o council_n i_o shall_v only_o show_v that_o the_o minister_n who_o first_o appear_v before_o the_o council_n at_o the_o first_o indulgence_n do_v witness_v a_o good_a confession_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o council_n they_o declare_v that_o they_o have_v receive_v their_o ministry_n from_o jesus_n christ_n and_o after_o design_n themselves_o the_o minister_n of_o jesus_n christ_n they_o speak_v of_o their_o ministry_n as_o paul_n do_v of_o his_o ministry_n act_v 22.24_o the_o ministry_n say_v he_o which_o i_o have_v receive_v of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o by_o the_o way_n we_o may_v take_v notice_n that_o the_o ministry_n be_v not_o a_o mere_a power_n or_o authority_n but_o comprehend_v the_o exercise_n of_o that_o authority_n the_o exercise_n of_o the_o ministerial_a office_n for_o paul_n speak_v of_o finish_v the_o ministry_n which_o he_o have_v receive_v which_o unquestionable_o point_v at_o the_o exercise_n of_o his_o ministry_n and_o they_o design_v themselves_o as_o paul_n design_n minister_n 1_o cor._n 4.1_o let_v a_o man_n so_o account_v of_o we_o as_o of_o the_o minister_n of_o christ_n 2_o cor._n 11.23_o be_v they_o minister_n of_o christ_n i_o speak_v as_o a_o fool_n i_o be_o more_o they_o who_o quarrel_n this_o part_n of_o their_o confession_n must_v fall_v first_o upon_o the_o apostle_n paul_n or_o rather_o upon_o the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o the_o apostle_n speak_v as_o he_o be_v move_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n 2._o they_o declare_v that_o they_o have_v receive_v from_o christ_n full_a prescription_n for_o regulate_v they_o in_o their_o ministry_n as_o they_o have_v acknowledge_v christ_n the_o giver_n of_o the_o ministry_n so_o they_o acknowledge_v he_o the_o lawgiver_n from_o who_o they_o have_v the_o prescription_n to_o regulate_v they_o in_o the_o ministry_n both_o in_o their_o entrance_n into_o it_o and_o exercise_v of_o it_o then_o they_o declare_v that_o these_o prescription_n of_o christ_n be_v full_a this_o exclude_v all_o other_o prescription_n though_o they_o have_v say_v no_o more_o but_o that_o they_o have_v receive_v prescription_n from_o christ_n to_o regulate_v they_o this_o will_v have_v sufficient_o exclude_v all_o other_o prescription_n for_o the_o prescription_n be_v the_o prescription_n of_o god_n we_o must_v not_o diminish_v from_o they_o and_o so_o we_o must_v not_o admit_v any_o rule_v contrary_a to_o they_o or_o that_o derogate_a any_o way_n from_o they_o and_o we_o must_v not_o add_v unto_o they_o because_o they_o be_v his_o word_n prov._n 30.5_o 6._o every_o word_n of_o god_n be_v pure_a add_v thou_o not_o to_o his_o word_n lest_o he_o reprove_v thou_o and_o thou_o be_v find_v a_o liar_n and_o then_o see_v christ_n have_v give_v these_o prescription_n to_o regulate_v minister_n in_o their_o ministry_n this_o show_v that_o these_o prescription_n be_v a_o perfect_a rule_n a_o rule_n must_v be_v perfect_a else_o it_o be_v not_o a_o rule_n as_o our_o divine_n maintain_v against_o the_o papist_n in_o plead_v for_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o scripture_n see_v christ_n have_v give_v prescription_n to_o his_o minister_n to_o regulate_v they_o in_o their_o ministry_n these_o prescription_n be_v perfect_a else_o they_o be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o reach_v the_o end_n of_o regulate_v his_o work_n be_v perfect_a he_o be_v faithful_a in_o his_o house_n as_o a_o son_n over_o his_o own_o house_n he_o have_v finish_v all_o the_o work_n that_o be_v give_v he_o to_o do_v but_o when_o they_o further_o assert_v that_o these_o prescription_n be_v full_a this_o do_v clear_o exclude_v all_o other_o prescription_n for_o regulate_v they_o in_o their_o ministry_n as_o superfluous_a and_o as_o addition_n to_o that_o which_o god_n have_v make_v full_a and_o perfect_a but_o last_o of_o all_o this_o be_v one_o of_o the_o lord_n prescription_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o add_v to_o his_o word_n nor_o diminish_v from_o it_o deut._n 4.2_o again_o that_o be_v another_o of_o his_o prescription_n that_o they_o do_v all_o in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o see_v they_o be_v the_o minister_n of_o christ_n and_o their_o work_n the_o work_n of_o the_o ministry_n receive_v from_o christ_n any_o that_o will_v not_o shut_v their_o eye_n may_v see_v that_o they_o behove_v to_o be_v regulate_v by_o his_o prescription_n alone_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o their_o ministry_n 3._o they_o confess_v christ_n to_o be_v their_o judge_n to_o who_o they_o be_v countable_a in_o the_o discharge_n of_o their_o ministry_n for_o these_o be_v the_o word_n which_o mr._n hutcheson_n speak_v in_o their_o name_n we_o have_v receive_v our_o ministry_n from_o jesus_n christ_n with_o full_a prescription_n from_o he_o for_o regulate_v we_o therein_o and_o must_v in_o discharge_v thereof_o be_v accountable_a to_o he_o this_o do_v clear_o evidence_n that_o they_o behove_v upon_o their_o great_a peril_n to_o adhere_v close_o to_o these_o prescription_n which_o they_o have_v receive_v from_o the_o lord_n jesus_n see_v they_o be_v to_o give_v a_o account_n unto_o christ_n how_o they_o have_v discharge_v their_o ministry_n according_a to_o his_o full_a
