apostle_n sum_v up_o the_o whole_a argument_n for_o subjection_n which_o he_o reduce_v to_o conscience_n towards_o god_n and_o fear_v of_o the_o secular_a power_n wherefore_o you_o must_v needs_o be_v subject_n not_o only_o for_o wrath_n but_o also_o for_o conscience_n sake_n and_o that_o st._n peter_n by_o well_o do_v mean_n subjection_n to_o prince_n be_v very_o plain_a for_o so_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o with_o well_o do_v you_o shall_v put_v to_o silence_v the_o ignorance_n of_o foolish_a man_n that_o be_v by_o obedience_n and_o subjection_n to_o prince_n which_o be_v the_o duty_n he_o there_o exhort_v they_o to_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v very_o probable_a that_o he_o mean_v the_o same_o by_o well_o do_v in_o the_o verse_n before_o that_o governor_n be_v for_o the_o punishment_n of_o evil_a doer_n and_o the_o praise_n of_o they_o that_o do_v well_o to_o punish_v the_o disobedient_a and_o rebellious_a and_o to_o reward_v and_o protect_v those_o who_o live_v in_o all_o quiet_a and_o peaceable_a subjection_n and_o if_o this_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o it_o i_o think_v they_o can_v find_v no_o limitation_n here_o of_o our_o subjection_n to_o prince_n 7._o but_o let_v we_o suppose_v that_o when_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o ruler_n be_v not_o a_o terror_n to_o good_a work_n but_o to_o the_o evil_a he_o understand_v by_o it_o in_o general_a the_o great_a advantage_n of_o civil_a government_n that_o be_v for_o the_o suppression_n of_o wickedness_n and_o encouragement_n of_o virtue_n which_o be_v the_o true_a end_n and_o the_o best_a improvement_n of_o humane_a power_n this_o also_o be_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n true_a of_o the_o worst_a and_o most_o tyrannical_a prince_n and_o therefore_o the_o argument_n for_o subjection_n be_v good_a even_o under_o a_o tyrant_n public_a justice_n be_v administer_v under_o the_o government_n of_o nero_n and_o good_a man_n be_v reward_v and_o bad_a man_n punish_v and_o though_o justice_n be_v not_o so_o equal_o and_o so_o universal_o administer_v under_o a_o bad_a prince_n as_o under_o a_o good_a one_o though_o a_o tyrant_n may_v oppress_v many_o of_o his_o subject_n and_o be_v the_o occasion_n of_o great_a calamity_n yet_o while_o there_o be_v any_o public_a government_n maintain_v in_o the_o world_n it_o lay_v great_a restraint_n upon_o the_o unruly_a lust_n and_o passion_n of_o man_n and_o give_v great_a security_n to_o the_o just_a and_o innocent_a and_o therefore_o good_a man_n be_v concern_v to_o promote_v the_o peace_n and_o security_n of_o government_n though_o the_o prince_n be_v a_o tyrant_n for_o there_o be_v more_o justice_n to_o be_v have_v under_o a_o tyrant_n than_o in_o a_o civil_a war._n in_o ordinary_a case_n it_o be_v very_o possible_a for_o good_a man_n to_o live_v easy_o and_o tolerable_o under_o a_o very_a bad_a prince_n &_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v their_o lot_n to_o suffer_v yet_o since_o the_o peace_n and_o quiet_a of_o humane_a society_n be_v in_o itself_o so_o great_a a_o blessing_n and_o the_o public_a good_a be_v better_a consult_v by_o the_o preservation_n of_o government_n than_o by_o resistance_n it_o become_v every_o good_a man_n rather_o to_o suffer_v patient_o under_o a_o tyrant_n than_o to_o shake_v and_o unsettle_v humane_a government_n and_o disturb_v the_o natural_a course_n of_o justice_n by_o sedition_n and_o tumult_n 8._o nay_o let_v we_o suppose_v that_o the_o apostle_n here_o speak_v of_o such_o a_o equal_a administration_n of_o justice_n as_o can_v be_v expect_v under_o the_o government_n of_o a_o tyrant_n yet_o so_o the_o argument_n hold_v good_a against_o resistance_n though_o our_o prince_n be_v never_o so_o bad_a and_o it_o lie_v thus_o we_o must_v not_o resist_v the_o power_n because_o ruler_n be_v not_o a_o terror_n to_o good_a work_n but_o to_o the_o evil_n this_o be_v the_o great_a blessing_n of_o humane_a government_n to_o preserve_v justice_n and_o righteousness_n among_o man_n for_o this_o reason_n god_n have_v entrust_v the_o prince_n with_o the_o power_n of_o the_o sword_n for_o the_o punishment_n of_o evil_a doer_n and_o the_o praise_n of_o they_o that_o do_v well_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o resist_v he_o because_o public_a justice_n be_v so_o great_a a_o blessing_n to_o the_o world_n but_o how_o do_v this_o follow_n you_o will_v say_v that_o we_o must_v not_o resist_v a_o tyrant_n who_o be_v so_o far_o from_o administer_a justice_n that_o he_o oppress_v his_o subject_n because_o civil_a government_n and_o public_a justice_n be_v so_o great_a a_o blessing_n what_o agreement_n be_v there_o between_o civil_a government_n and_o public_a justice_n and_o a_o tyrant_n why_o the_o consequence_n be_v very_o plain_a civil_a government_n which_o be_v for_o the_o administration_n of_o public_a justice_n be_v a_o great_a and_o inestimable_a blessing_n to_o the_o world_n but_o now_o there_o can_v be_v no_o civil_a government_n without_o a_o supreme_a and_o irresistible_a power_n public_a justice_n can_v be_v administer_v unless_o there_o be_v some_o power_n from_o whence_o there_o be_v no_o appeal_n it_o be_v not_o necessary_a indeed_o that_o the_o power_n shall_v always_o be_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o one_o man_n but_o if_o god_n have_v place_v this_o power_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o prince_n there_o it_o must_v be_v irresistible_a too_o however_o he_o use_v it_o for_o if_o once_o it_o be_v make_v lawful_a to_o resist_v the_o supreme_a power_n wherever_o it_o be_v place_v you_o dissolve_v humane_a society_n or_o at_o least_o expose_v they_o to_o perpetual_a disorder_n and_o convulsion_n factious_a and_o ambitious_a man_n will_v find_v pretence_n to_o resist_v good_a prince_n as_o well_o as_o the_o bad_a and_o no_o government_n can_v be_v any_o long_o secure_v than_o while_o ill-designing_a man_n want_v power_n to_o resist_v now_o then_o to_o pass_v a_o true_a judgement_n of_o this_o matter_n we_o must_v not_o only_o consider_v what_o present_a inconvenience_n we_o may_v suffer_v from_o the_o irresistible_a power_n of_o a_o tyrant_n but_o what_o a_o irreparable_a mischief_n it_o be_v for_o ever_o to_o unsettle_v the_o foundation_n of_o government_n we_o must_v consider_v whether_o civil_a government_n be_v the_o great_a blessing_n to_o mankind_n or_o a_o tyrant_n the_o great_a curse_n whether_o it_o be_v more_o desirable_a to_o endure_v the_o insolence_n and_o injustice_n of_o a_o tyrant_n when_o the_o power_n fall_v into_o such_o a_o hand_n or_o for_o ever_o to_o be_v deprive_v of_o the_o security_n of_o government_n and_o the_o blessing_n of_o peace_n and_o order_n and_o therefore_o there_o be_v great_a reason_n why_o god_n shall_v so_o severe_o forbid_v the_o resistance_n of_o prince_n though_o tyrant_n and_o why_o we_o shall_v quiet_o and_o content_o submit_v to_o this_o divine_a appointment_n because_o the_o resistance_n of_o the_o supreme_a power_n be_v it_o once_o allow_v by_o god_n will_v weaken_v the_o authority_n of_o humane_a government_n and_o expose_v they_o to_o the_o rage_n and_o frenzy_n of_o ambitious_a and_o discontent_a statesman_n or_o wild_a enthusiast_n this_o i_o think_v be_v a_o sufficient_a answer_n to_o this_o pretence_n that_o the_o apostle_n limit_n our_o subjection_n to_o prince_n to_o the_o regular_a exercise_n of_o their_o authority_n 3._o it_o be_v object_v also_o from_o st._n peter_n word_n that_o the_o inferior_a and_o subordinate_a magistrate_n receive_v their_o power_n from_o god_n also_o as_o well_o as_o supreme_a and_o sovereign_a prince_n governor_n be_v send_v by_o he_o that_o be_v say_v they_o by_o god_n for_o the_o punishment_n of_o evil_a doer_n and_o the_o praise_n of_o they_o that_o do_v well_o and_o therefore_o though_o private_a man_n may_v not_o resist_v a_o sovereign_a prince_n yet_o public_a magistrate_n may_v though_o they_o be_v not_o supreme_a for_o it_o be_v their_o duty_n also_o to_o see_v wickedness_n punish_v and_o virtue_n reward_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v part_n of_o their_o commission_n to_o give_v check_n to_o the_o sovereign_a power_n and_o to_o defend_v subject_n from_o the_o unjust_a violence_n and_o oppression_n of_o their_o prince_n and_o this_o the_o emperor_n trajan_n learn_v from_o the_o common_a principle_n of_o justice_n and_o equity_n who_o deliver_v a_o sword_n to_o one_o of_o his_o officer_n with_o this_o charge_n to_o use_v it_o for_o he_o while_o he_o govern_v well_o but_o against_o he_o if_o he_o govern_v ill_o now_o in_o answer_n to_o this_o we_o may_v consider_v 1._o that_o there_o be_v no_o foundation_n at_o all_o for_o this_o in_o the_o text_n for_o this_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d or_o by_o he_o can_v by_o any_o rule_n of_o grammar_n be_v refer_v to_o god_n but_o to_o the_o king_n submit_v to_o every_o ordinance_n of_o man_n for_o the_o lord_n sake_n whether_o to_o the_o king_n as_o supreme_a or_o unto_o governor_n as_o unto_o they_o who_o be_v send_v by_o
and_o practise_v about_o obedience_n to_o sovereign_a prince_n whereby_o we_o may_v learn_v how_o far_a christian_n be_v oblige_v by_o these_o law_n of_o subjection_n and_o nonresistance_n 1._o i_o shall_v distinct_o consider_v the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n while_o he_o live_v on_o earth_n and_o here_o be_v several_a thing_n very_o fit_a to_o be_v observe_v 1._o we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o suspect_v that_o christ_n will_v alter_v the_o right_n of_o sovereign_a power_n and_o the_o measure_n of_o obedience_n and_o subjection_n which_o be_v fix_v and_o determine_v by_o god_n himself_o this_o be_v no_o part_n of_o his_o commission_n to_o change_v the_o external_a form_n and_o polity_n of_o civil_a government_n which_o be_v a_o act_n of_o secular_a power_n and_o authority_n and_o do_v not_o belong_v to_o a_o spiritual_a prince_n he_o who_o will_v not_o undertake_v to_o decide_v a_o petty_a controversy_n or_o to_o divide_v a_o inheritance_n between_o two_o contend_a brethren_n 12_o luke_n 13_o 14._o can_v we_o think_v that_o he_o will_v attempt_v any_o thing_n of_o that_o vast_a consequence_n as_o the_o change_n and_o alteration_n of_o civil_a power_n which_o will_v have_v unsettle_a the_o fundamental_a constitution_n of_o all_o the_o government_n of_o the_o world_n at_o that_o time_n our_o saviour_n tell_v we_o that_o he_o come_v not_o to_o destroy_v the_o law_n and_o the_o prophet_n but_o to_o fulfil_v it_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d to_o fill_v it_o up_o to_o complete_a and_o perfect_a it_o 5_o matth._n 17._o that_o be_v to_o fulfil_v the_o ancient_a type_n and_o prophecy_n in_o his_o own_o person_n to_o perfect_v a_o external_a and_o ceremonial_a by_o a_o real_a and_o evangelical_n righteousness_n to_o perfect_v the_o moral_a law_n with_o new_a instance_n and_o degree_n of_o virtue_n but_o he_o abrogate_a no_n moral_a law_n and_o therefore_o not_o the_o law_n of_o obedience_n and_o subjection_n to_o prince_n which_o have_v always_o be_v reduce_v to_o the_o five_o commandment_n nay_o he_o abrogate_a no_o law_n but_o by_o perfect_v and_o fulfil_v they_o and_o therefore_o he_o can_v make_v no_o alteration_n in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o nonresistance_n which_o be_v as_o perfect_a subjection_n as_o can_v or_o aught_o to_o be_v pay_v to_o sovereign_a prince_n his_o kingdom_n be_v not_o of_o this_o world_n as_o he_o tell_v pilate_n though_o he_o be_v a_o king_n he_o neither_o be_v a_o enemy_n nor_o rival_n to_o caesar_n but_o have_v he_o absolve_v his_o disciple_n from_o their_o obedience_n to_o prince_n have_v he_o make_v it_o in_o any_o case_n lawful_a to_o resist_v which_o be_v so_o express_o forbid_v the_o jew_n by_o god_n himself_o and_o which_o be_v such_o a_o contradiction_n to_o the_o very_a notion_n of_o sovereign_a power_n he_o have_v be_v somewhat_o worse_o than_o a_o rival_n to_o all_o the_o prince_n of_o the_o earth_n for_o though_o he_o have_v set_v up_o no_o kingdom_n of_o his_o own_o yet_o he_o have_v pull_v down_o they_o whereas_o he_o take_v great_a care_n that_o his_o religion_n shall_v give_v no_o disturbance_n to_o the_o world_n nor_o create_v any_o reasonable_a jealousy_n and_o suspicion_n to_o prince_n who_o have_v be_v very_o excusable_a for_o their_o aversion_n to_o christianity_n have_v it_o invade_v the_o right_n and_o royalty_n of_o their_o crown_n this_o make_v it_o very_o improbable_a that_o our_o saviour_n shall_v make_v any_o alteration_n in_o civil_a power_n or_o abridge_v the_o right_n of_o sovereignty_n which_o be_v so_o foreign_a to_o his_o design_n of_o come_v into_o the_o world_n and_o so_o incongruous_a to_o the_o person_n which_o he_o sustain_v and_o yet_o he_o can_v not_o alter_v the_o duty_n of_o subject_n but_o he_o must_v alter_v the_o right_n of_o prince_n too_o he_o must_v take_v away_o the_o sovereign_a power_n of_o prince_n at_o the_o same_o time_n that_o he_o make_v it_o lawful_a for_o subject_n in_o any_o case_n whatsoever_o to_o resist_v we_o may_v safe_o then_o conclude_v that_o our_o saviour_n have_v leave_v the_o government_n of_o the_o world_n as_o he_o find_v it_o he_o have_v indeed_o give_v such_o admirable_a law_n as_o will_v teach_v prince_n to_o govern_v and_o subject_n to_o obey_v better_a which_o be_v the_o most_o effectual_a way_n to_o secure_v the_o public_a peace_n and_o happiness_n to_o prevent_v the_o oppression_n of_o subject_n and_o rebellion_n against_o prince_n but_o he_o have_v not_o interpose_v in_o new_a model_v the_o government_n of_o the_o world_n which_o be_v not_o of_o such_o consequence_n as_o some_o man_n imagine_v it_o be_v not_o the_o external_a form_n of_o government_n but_o the_o fatherly_a care_n and_o prudence_n and_o justice_n of_o governor_n and_o the_o dutiful_a obedience_n of_o subject_n which_o can_v make_v any_o people_n happy_a if_o prince_n and_o subject_n be_v good_a christian_n they_o may_v be_v happy_a under_o most_o form_n of_o government_n if_o they_o be_v not_o they_o can_v be_v happy_a under_o none_o have_v our_o saviour_n give_v subject_n liberty_n to_o resist_v to_o depose_v to_o murder_v tyrannical_a prince_n he_o have_v do_v they_o no_o kindness_n at_o all_o for_o to_o give_v liberty_n to_o subject_n to_o resist_v be_v only_o to_o proclaim_v a_o universal_a licence_n to_o faction_n and_o sedition_n and_o civil_a war_n and_o if_o any_o man_n can_v think_v this_o such_o a_o mighty_a blessing_n to_o the_o world_n yet_o i_o think_v it_o be_v not_o a_o blessing_n proper_a for_o the_o prince_n of_o peace_n to_o give_v but_o he_o who_o instruct_v prince_n to_o rule_v as_o god_n minister_n and_o vicegerent_n and_o to_o express_v a_o fatherly_a care_n and_o concernment_n for_o the_o happiness_n of_o their_o subject_n and_o that_o teach_v subject_n to_o reverence_n and_o obey_v their_o prince_n as_o the_o image_n of_o god_n and_o quiet_o to_o submit_v and_o yield_v to_o his_o authority_n and_o that_o enforce_v th●se_a law_n both_o on_o prince_n and_o subject_n in_o the_o name_n and_o authority_n of_o god_n and_o from_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o future_a judgement_n when_o prince_n who_o abuse_v their_o power_n shall_v give_v a_o account_n of_o it_o to_o their_o great_a master_n when_o subject_n who_o resist_v shall_v receive_v to_o themselves_o damnation_n and_o those_o who_o patient_o and_o quiet_o suffer_v for_o god_n sake_n shall_v have_v their_o injury_n redress_v and_o their_o obedience_n reward_v i_o say_v such_o a_o person_n as_o this_o take_v a_o more_o effectual_a course_n to_o reform_v the_o abuse_n of_o civil_a power_n and_o to_o preserve_v good_a government_n in_o the_o world_n than_o all_o our_o wise_a politician_n and_o state-mender_n who_o think_v to_o reform_v the_o government_n of_o the_o world_n by_o some_o statespell_n and_o charm_n without_o reform_v those_o who_o govern_v and_o those_o who_o be_v govern_v this_o our_o saviour_n have_v do_v and_o this_o be_v the_o best_a thing_n that_o can_v be_v do_v nay_o this_o be_v all_o that_o he_o can_v do_v in_o this_o matter_n he_o never_o usurp_v any_o civil_a power_n and_o authority_n and_o therefore_o can_v not_o new_a model_n the_o government_n of_o the_o world_n he_o never_o offer_v any_o external_a force_n and_o compulsion_n to_o make_v man_n obey_v his_o law_n and_o therefore_o neither_o force_n prince_n to_o rule_v well_o nor_o subject_n to_o obey_v but_o he_o have_v take_v the_o same_o care_n of_o the_o government_n of_o the_o world_n as_o he_o have_v do_v of_o all_o the_o other_o duty_n of_o piety_n and_o virtue_n that_o be_v he_o have_v give_v very_o good_a law_n and_o threaten_v those_o who_o break_v they_o with_o eternal_a punishment_n and_o as_o the_o law_n and_o religion_n of_o our_o saviour_n prevail_v so_o will_v the_o government_n of_o the_o world_n mend_v without_o alter_v the_o model_n and_o constitution_n of_o they_o 2._o but_o yet_o we_o have_v some_o positive_a evidence_n what_o our_o saviour_n teach_v about_o obedience_n to_o the_o high_a power_n i_o shall_v give_v you_o two_o instance_n of_o it_o which_o be_v as_o plain_a and_o express_v as_o can_v be_v desire_v 1._o the_o first_o be_v that_o answer_v our_o saviour_n give_v to_o the_o pharisee_n and_o herodian_o when_o they_o consult_v together_o to_o entangle_v he_o in_o his_o talk_n 22_o matth._n 15._o etc._n etc._n they_o come_v to_o he_o with_o great_a ceremony_n and_o address_n as_o to_o a_o infallible_a oracle_n to_o consult_v he_o in_o a_o very_a weighty_a case_n of_o conscience_n they_o express_v a_o great_a esteem_n and_o assurance_n of_o his_o sincerity_n and_o faithfulness_n and_o courage_n as_o well_o as_o of_o his_o unerring_a judgement_n in_o declare_v the_o will_n of_o god_n to_o they_o master_n we_o know_v that_o thou_o be_v true_a and_o teach_v the_o way_n of_o god_n in_o truth_n neither_o care_v thou_o for_o any_o man_n for_o thou_o regard_v not_o the_o person_n
god_n himself_o have_v for_o the_o prince_n have_v god_n authority_n and_o therefore_o can_v be_v resist_v but_o by_o a_o great_a authority_n than_o god_n and_o by_o the_o same_o reason_n if_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o the_o people_n be_v subject_a to_o god_n they_o must_v be_v subject_a to_o their_o prince_n too_o because_o he_o act_n by_o god_n authority_n and_o commission_n be_v a_o learn_v the_o trade_n of_o murder_a prince_n and_o rebel_a against_o they_o it_o be_v time_n then_o for_o prince_n to_o look_v to_o themselves_o and_o if_o ever_o our_o posterity_n shall_v suffer_v under_o so_o unhappy_a a_o change_n of_o government_n they_o will_v have_v reason_n for_o ever_o to_o curse_v the_o fanatic_a rage_n and_o fury_n of_o this_o age_n and_o the_o best_a way_n to_o remove_v that_o scandal_n which_o have_v be_v already_o give_v to_o prince_n be_v by_o a_o public_a profession_n and_o practice_n of_o this_o great_a gospel-duty_n of_o nonresistance_n 8._o the_o last_o objection_n against_o nonresistance_n be_v this_o that_o if_o resistance_n in_o no_o case_n be_v allow_v the_o mischief_n and_o inconvenience_n to_o mankind_n may_v be_v intolerable_a to_o which_o i_o shall_v brief_o return_v these_o follow_a answer_n 1._o that_o bare_a possibility_n be_v no_o argument_n against_o any_o thing_n for_o that_o which_o may_v be_v may_v not_o be_v and_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o this_o world_n how_o good_a or_o useful_a or_o necessary_a soever_o it_o be_v in_o its_o self_n but_o may_v possible_o be_v attend_v with_o very_o great_a inconvenience_n and_o if_o we_o must_v reject_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o useful_a in_o itself_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o some_o possible_a inconvenience_n which_o may_v attend_v it_o we_o must_v condemn_v the_o very_o best_a thing_n modesty_n and_o humility_n justice_n and_o temperance_n be_v great_a and_o excellent_a virtue_n and_o yet_o we_o may_v live_v in_o such_o a_o age_n when_o these_o virtue_n shall_v beggar_v a_o man_n and_o expose_v he_o to_o contempt_n mercy_n and_o clemency_n be_v a_o noble_a quality_n in_o a_o prince_n and_o yet_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o the_o clemency_n of_o a_o prince_n may_v ruin_v he_o and_o he_o may_v spare_v traitor_n life_n till_o they_o take_v away_o he_o marriage_n be_v a_o divine_a institution_n which_o contribute_v as_o much_o to_o the_o happiness_n and_o comfort_n of_o humane_a life_n as_o any_o one_o thing_n in_o this_o world_n and_o yet_o it_o may_v be_v you_o can_v name_v any_o thing_n neither_o which_o many_o time_n prove_v so_o great_a a_o plague_n and_o curse_v to_o mankind_n thus_o nonresistance_n be_v a_o great_a and_o excellent_a duty_n and_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o the_o peace_n and_o order_n and_o good_a government_n of_o the_o world_n but_o yet_o a_o bad_a prince_n may_v take_v the_o advantage_n of_o it_o to_o do_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o mischief_n and_o what_o follow_v from_o hence_o that_o nonresistance_n be_v no_o duty_n because_o it_o may_v possible_o be_v attend_v with_o evil_a consequence_n then_o you_o can_v hardly_o name_v any_o thing_n which_o be_v our_o duty_n for_o the_o most_o excellent_a virtue_n may_v at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o expose_v we_o to_o very_o great_a inconvenience_n but_o when_o they_o do_v so_o we_o must_v not_o deny_v they_o to_o be_v our_o duty_n because_o we_o shall_v suffer_v by_o it_o but_o must_v bear_v our_o suffering_n patient_o and_o expect_v our_o reward_n from_o god_n and_o yet_o that_o there_o be_v not_o so_o much_o danger_n in_o nonresistance_n as_o these_o man_n will_v persuade_v the_o world_n i_o hope_v appear_v from_o my_o answer_n to_o the_o last_o objection_n 2._o when_o we_o talk_v of_o inconvenience_n we_o must_v weigh_v the_o inconvenience_n on_o both_o side_n and_o consider_v which_o be_v great_a we_o may_v suffer_v great_a inconvenience_n by_o nonresistance_n when_o our_o prince_n happen_v to_o prove_v a_o tyrant_n but_o shall_v we_o suffer_v few_o inconvenience_n be_v it_o lawful_a for_o subject_n to_o resist_v which_o be_v the_o great_a and_o most_o merciless_a tyrant_n a_o arbitrary_a and_o lawless_a prince_n or_o a_o civil_a war_n which_o will_v destroy_v most_o man_n life_n a_o nero_n or_o dioclesian_n or_o a_o pitch_a battle_n who_o will_v devour_v most_o estate_n a_o covetous_a and_o rapacious_a prince_n or_o a_o insolent_a army_n and_o hungry_a rabble_n which_o be_v the_o great_a oppression_n of_o the_o subject_a some_o illegal_a tax_n or_o plundering_n decimation_n and_o sequestration_n who_o be_v most_o likely_a to_o abuse_v their_o power_n the_o prince_n or_o the_o people_n which_o be_v most_o probable_a that_o a_o prince_n shall_v oppress_v his_o dutiful_a and_o obedient_a subject_n or_o that_o some_o factious_a and_o design_v man_n shall_v misrepresent_v the_o government_n of_o their_o prince_n and_o that_o the_o giddy_a multitude_n shall_v believe_v they_o who_o be_v most_o likely_a to_o make_v a_o change_n and_o alteration_n in_o government_n a_o hereditary_a prince_n or_o the_o people_n who_o be_v fond_a of_o innovation_n while_o sovereign_n and_o irresistible_a power_n be_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o prince_n it_o be_v possible_a we_o may_v sometime_o have_v a_o good_a one_o and_o then_o we_o shall_v find_v no_o inconvenience_n in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o nonresistance_n nay_o it_o be_v possible_a we_o may_v have_v a_o great_a many_o good_a prince_n for_o one_o bad_a one_o for_o monster_n be_v not_o so_o common_a as_o more_o natural_a production_n so_o that_o the_o inconvenience_n we_o may_v suffer_v by_o this_o doctrine_n will_v but_o seldom_o happen_v but_o have_v the_o people_n power_n to_o resist_v it_o be_v almost_o impossible_a that_o public_a government_n shall_v ever_o be_v quiet_a and_o secure_a for_o half_o a_o age_n together_o they_o be_v as_o unstable_a as_o the_o sea_n and_o as_o easy_o move_v with_o every_o breath_n and_o as_o outrageous_a and_o tempestuous_a too_o these_o be_v not_o some_o guess_n and_o probability_n but_o demonstration_n in_o this_o unhappy_a age_n wherein_o we_o have_v see_v all_o these_o thing_n act_v the_o conclusion_n contain_v a_o short_a dissuasive_a from_o resistance_n and_o rebellion_n have_v thus_o large_o prove_v that_o subjection_n and_o nonresistance_n be_v a_o necessary_a duty_n which_o subject_n owe_v to_o sovereign_n prince_n and_o answer_v all_o those_o objection_n which_o be_v make_v against_o it_o the_o result_n of_o all_o be_v to_o persuade_v subject_n to_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o and_o st._n paul_n urge_v two_o very_a powerful_a argument_n to_o persuade_v we_o to_o it_o rom._n 13._o 1._o that_o the_o power_n be_v of_o god_n and_o he_o that_o resist_v the_o power_n resist_v the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n and_o certain_o he_o be_v no_o christian_n who_o dispute_v obedience_n to_o the_o divine_a ordinance_n and_o constitution_n a_o prince_n be_v the_o image_n the_o vicegerent_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o prince_n be_v call_v god_n in_o scripture_n and_o be_v he_o what_o he_o will_v a_o good_a or_o a_o bad_a prince_n while_o god_n think_v fit_a to_o advance_v he_o to_o the_o throne_n it_o become_v we_o to_o submit_v and_o reverence_v the_o divine_a authority_n will_v you_o lift_v up_o your_o hand_n against_o god_n will_v you_o cast_v off_o his_o authority_n and_o government_n too_o do_v not_o he_o know_v how_o to_o rule_v we_o how_o to_o choose_v a_o prince_n for_o we_o the_o great_a rebel_n will_v blush_v to_o say_v this_o in_o so_o many_o word_n and_o yet_o this_o be_v the_o language_n of_o rebellion_n man_n dislike_v their_o prince_n that_o be_v that_o governor_n who_o god_n set_v over_o they_o they_o rebel_v against_o their_o prince_n they_o depose_v he_o they_o murder_v he_o that_o be_v
