assurance_n and_o confidence_n of_o dutiful_a child_n in_o their_o address_n to_o god_n when_o they_o draw_v near_o a_o conclusion_n of_o their_o life_n they_o review_v their_o past_a victory_n over_o the_o world_n and_o the_o flesh_n with_o the_o secure_a triumph_n the_o little_a folly_n and_o indiscretion_n and_o miscarriage_n which_o the_o best_a man_n be_v subject_a to_o will_v keep_v they_o for_o their_o time_n be_v past_a and_o their_o youthful_a strength_n and_o vigour_n spend_v and_o the_o scene_n of_o action_n over_o they_o can_v never_o recall_n thirty_o or_o forty_o year_n past_a in_o which_o if_o they_o have_v improve_v their_o time_n well_o they_o may_v have_v do_v great_a service_n to_o god_n and_o to_o religion_n and_o great_a good_a to_o man_n but_o those_o who_o be_v get_v to_o heaven_n and_o it_o be_v infinite_a mercy_n in_o god_n to_o accept_v of_o such_o penitent_n but_o the_o bright_a and_o dazzle_a crown_n be_v reserve_v for_o those_o who_o have_v spend_v that_o your_o labour_n shall_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a in_o the_o lord_n chap._n vi_o for_o what_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v vi_o let_v we_o now_o inquire_v what_o we_o be_v to_o be_v judge_v for_o there_o be_v such_o admirable_a art_n and_o curiosity_n in_o the_o make_v of_o the_o mean_a creature_n as_o the_o wise_a philosopher_n be_v not_o able_a to_o understand_v much_o less_o to_o imitate_v and_o if_o all_o humane_a art_n and_o philosophy_n can_v make_v a_o fly_n nor_o so_o much_o as_o understand_v the_o make_v of_o it_o how_o can_v we_o possible_o imagine_v that_o such_o a_o world_n as_o this_o which_o consist_v of_o such_o infinite_a variety_n of_o creature_n and_o every_o creature_n make_v up_o of_o so_o many_o natural_a wonder_n and_o all_o so_o admirable_o fit_v to_o each_o other_o as_o to_o make_v up_o a_o uniform_a regular_a and_o beautiful_a world_n shall_v own_o any_o other_o author_n but_o a_o infinite_o wise_a and_o perfect_a be_v who_o have_v all_o power_n and_o all_o possible_a idea_n of_o usefulness_n and_o beauty_n that_o be_v to_o say_v since_o there_o be_v such_o apparent_a character_n and_o impression_n of_o a_o excellent_a and_o unsearchable_a wisdom_n in_o the_o frame_n of_o the_o world_n a_o wise_a be_v must_v be_v the_o maker_n of_o it_o and_o be_v it_o not_o as_o good_a a_o argument_n that_o if_o humane_a nature_n be_v so_o contrive_v that_o and_o confessor_n there_o be_v to_o intemperance_n and_o lust_n or_o some_o other_o destructive_a vice_n inquire_v into_o the_o decay_n of_o noble_a and_o flourish_a family_n how_o goodly_a lordship_n and_o manor_n come_v so_o often_o to_o change_v their_o master_n what_o make_v riches_n such_o uncertain_a and_o mutable_a thing_n look_v into_o the_o street_n and_o see_v what_o crowd_n of_o miserable_a
good_a way_n to_o do_v this_o but_o suppose_v this_o fail_n in_o some_o instance_n or_o can_v perfect_o accomplish_v what_o god_n intend_v will_v he_o give_v over_o here_o and_o use_v no_o other_o more_o effectual_a method_n to_o supply_v those_o defect_n notwithstanding_o all_o these_o natural_a reward_n of_o virtue_n good_a man_n while_o they_o live_v intermix_v with_o the_o wicked_a may_v be_v oppress_v by_o they_o and_o make_v as_o miserable_a as_o all_o external_a calamity_n and_o suffering_n can_v make_v they_o and_o be_v in_o great_a danger_n oâ—_n be_v so_o unless_o a_o watchful_a providence_n secure_v they_o the_o practice_n and_o exercise_v of_o virtue_n will_v make_v man_n happy_a both_o in_o soul_n and_o body_n where_o the_o natural_a effect_n of_o virtue_n be_v not_o bound_n to_o our_o curiosity_n and_o to_o make_v we_o modest_a in_o our_o inquiry_n into_o providence_n i_o shall_v show_v you_o i._n how_o dangerous_a it_o be_v to_o search_v too_o narrow_o into_o this_o make_v some_o man_n so_o regardless_o of_o knowledge_n they_o think_v god_n will_v judge_v they_o for_o no_o more_o than_o they_o know_v and_o all_o the_o good_a they_o be_v like_a to_o get_v by_o knowledge_n be_v to_o increase_v and_o aggravate_v their_o account_n i_o shall_v not_o enter_v into_o that_o dispute_n now_o which_o be_v nothing_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n how_o far_o not_o man_n a_o reasonable_a creature_n and_o be_v not_o a_o reasonable_a creature_n as_o much_o bind_v to_o know_v his_o duty_n as_o he_o be_v to_o practice_v it_o have_v god_n give_v we_o reason_n to_o they_o that_o sit_v in_o darkness_n and_o in_o the_o shadow_n of_o death_n and_o to_o guide_v our_o foot_n into_o the_o way_n of_o peace_n will_v it_o not_o be_v a_o impudent_a thing_n for_o such_o man_n to_o plead_v ignorance_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n who_o will_v not_o look_v into_o the_o bible_n nor_o attend_v public_a instruction_n to_o learn_v their_o duty_n who_o have_v the_o mean_n and_o opportunity_n of_o knowledge_n but_o will_v not_o use_v they_o who_o take_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o pain_n to_o be_v ignorant_a and_o to_o keep_v out_o of_o the_o way_n of_o knowledge_n which_o so_o often_o cross_v they_o that_o they_o have_v much_o ado_n to_o escape_v it_o whatever_o may_v be_v plead_v in_o excuse_n of_o the_o ignorance_n of_o heathen_n there_o can_v be_v no_o excuse_n for_o christian_n who_o have_v the_o most_o perfect_a revelation_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o will_v not_o look_v into_o it_o this_o be_v a_o great_a contempt_n of_o god_n it_o be_v in_o effect_n to_o say_v to_o god_n depart_v from_o we_o for_o we_o desire_v not_o the_o knowledge_n of_o thy_o way_n 21_o job_n 14._o and_o it_o be_v hard_o to_o say_v which_o be_v the_o most_o provoke_a sin_n to_o despise_v the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n or_o to_o break_v his_o law_n not_o to_o think_v it_o worth_a our_o while_n to_o know_v the_o will_n of_o god_n or_o through_o the_o power_n of_o temptation_n to_o transgress_v their_o duty_n and_o this_o be_v the_o danger_n we_o be_v in_o if_o we_o neglect_v or_o reject_v the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o gospel_n our_o ignorance_n will_v be_v our_o great_a crime_n it_o will_v be_v so_o far_o from_o excuse_v our_o wickedness_n that_o it_o will_v aggravate_v it_o for_o we_o choose_v to_o be_v ignorant_a that_o we_o may_v be_v wicked_a and_o therefore_o it_o concern_v we_o diligent_o to_o read_v and_o study_v the_o scripture_n and_o to_o attend_v upon_o the_o public_a ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o private_a instruction_n and_o direction_n of_o our_o spiritual_a guide_n for_o since_o christ_n come_v from_o heaven_n to_o declare_v the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o have_v put_v the_o holy_a scripture_n into_o our_o hand_n which_o be_v a_o perfect_a rule_n of_o faith_n and_o manner_n and_o furnish_v we_o with_o all_o the_o advantage_n to_o increase_v in_o knowledge_n it_o be_v as_o dangerous_a a_o thing_n to_o be_v wilful_o ignorant_a of_o the_o gospel_n as_o it_o be_v to_o disobey_v it_o ii_o as_o man_n shall_v be_v judge_v for_o their_o ignorance_n so_o they_o shall_v be_v judge_v for_o their_o infidelity_n this_o be_v so_o plain_a in_o scripture_n that_o it_o needs_o little_a proof_n our_o saviour_n express_o tell_v we_o he_o that_o believe_v on_o he_o that_o be_v on_o the_o son_n of_o god_n who_o god_n send_v into_o the_o world_n that_o the_o world_n through_o he_o may_v be_v save_v be_v not_o condemn_v but_o he_o that_o believe_v not_o be_v condemn_v already_o because_o he_o have_v not_o believe_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o only_o beget_v son_n of_o god_n and_o this_o be_v the_o condemnation_n that_o light_n be_v come_v into_o the_o world_n and_o man_n love_v darkness_n rather_o than_o light_n because_o their_o deed_n be_v evil_a 3_o john_n 17_o 18_o 19_o this_o our_o saviour_n frequent_o inculcate_n on_o the_o jew_n that_o unless_o they_o believe_v on_o he_o they_o must_v die_v and_o perish_v in_o their_o sin_n and_o we_o know_v the_o jew_n be_v reject_v by_o god_n for_o their_o infidelity_n their_o temple_n and_o city_n and_o nation_n destroy_v by_o the_o roman_n and_o they_o disperse_v and_o scatter_v among_o all_o nation_n to_o this_o day_n and_o our_o saviour_n after_o his_o resurrection_n when_o he_o give_v commission_n to_o his_o apostle_n to_o go_v into_o all_o the_o world_n and_o to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n to_o every_o creature_n universal_o pronounce_v he_o that_o believe_v and_o be_v baptize_v shall_v be_v save_v but_o he_o that_o believe_v not_o shall_v be_v damn_v
can_v deceive_v we_o for_o if_o we_o judge_v of_o ourselves_o by_o the_o same_o rule_n by_o which_o god_n will_v judge_v we_o every_o man_n know_v himself_o so_o well_o that_o he_o can_v mistake_v and_o when_o god_n and_o conscience_n judge_v by_o the_o same_o rule_n their_o judgement_n must_v be_v the_o same_o but_o if_o we_o will_v alter_v our_o rule_n of_o judge_v if_o conscience_n judge_v by_o one_o rule_n and_o god_n by_o another_o than_o there_o be_v no_o wonder_n if_o their_o judgement_n differ_v if_o god_n condemn_v those_o who_o conscience_n acquit_v they_o and_o absolve_v those_o who_o conscience_n or_o rather_o who_o private_a opinion_n and_o fancy_n condemn_v they_o this_o be_v plain_a from_o the_o instance_n before_o we_o some_o man_n justify_v themselves_o in_o do_v very_o wicked_a action_n but_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o they_o mistake_v the_o nature_n of_o thing_n they_o call_v good_a evil_n and_o evil_a good_a and_o then_o their_o conscience_n applaud_v and_o commend_v they_o for_o do_v that_o which_o be_v very_o wicked_a but_o which_o they_o call_v good_a as_o our_o saviour_n tell_v his_o apostle_n the_o time_n come_v when_o every_o one_o that_o kill_v you_o will_v think_v that_o he_o do_v god_n good_a service_n 16_o joh._n 2._o other_o who_o know_v they_o be_v guilty_a of_o very_o great_a wickedness_n be_v yet_o very_o confident_a of_o their_o salvation_n and_o full_a of_o assurance_n because_o they_o do_v not_o judge_v of_o themselves_o by_o the_o good_a or_o evil_n which_o they_o do_v but_o rely_v upon_o other_o mark_n and_o evidence_n for_o their_o salvation_n rapture_n ecstasy_n enthusiasm_n a_o presumptuous_a faith_n in_o christ_n a_o ineffectual_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n some_o arbitrary_a and_o fanciful_a sign_n of_o election_n etc._n etc._n now_o indeed_o these_o man_n conscience_n do_v condemn_v they_o for_o they_o accuse_v they_o of_o great_a wickedness_n but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v the_o judgement_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n but_o judge_n of_o their_o final_a state_n by_o their_o own_o mistake_a fancy_n and_o opinion_n and_o therefore_o according_a to_o the_o apostle_n rule_n god_n will_v condemn_v these_o man_n for_o their_o own_o conscience_n condemn_v they_o though_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v the_o judgement_n of_o their_o conscience_n but_o justify_v themselves_o in_o contradiction_n to_o it_o when_o conscience_n condemn_v other_o man_n who_o be_v not_o condemn_v by_o their_o own_o conscience_n that_o be_v who_o can_v charge_v themselves_o with_o any_o great_a guilt_n who_o be_v not_o conscious_a to_o themselves_o that_o they_o have_v live_v in_o any_o know_a sin_n or_o in_o the_o habitual_a neglect_n of_o any_o material_a and_o essential_a part_n of_o their_o duty_n yet_o they_o strong_o fancy_n that_o god_n will_v condemn_v they_o that_o they_o be_v under_o the_o sentence_n of_o reprobation_n that_o they_o have_v sin_v against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n though_o what_o that_o sin_n be_v they_o know_v not_o they_o want_v the_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o assure_v they_o of_o their_o election_n they_o have_v never_o feel_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n and_o therefore_o they_o fear_v they_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n that_o be_v they_o have_v never_o feel_v the_o horror_n and_o agony_n of_o guilty_a sinner_n because_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o blessing_n of_o a_o pious_a and_o virtuous_a education_n they_o have_v always_o be_v preserve_v from_o those_o frightful_a sin_n which_o amaze_v the_o conscience_n and_o therefore_o they_o fear_v it_o be_v but_o a_o false_a peace_n they_o feel_v that_o god_n be_v not_o in_o this_o soft_a and_o calm_a voice_n of_o conscience_n because_o they_o have_v never_o hear_v nor_o see_v the_o thundering_n and_o lightning_n from_o mount_n sinai_n or_o though_o they_o maintain_v a_o great_a reverence_n for_o god_n and_o worship_v he_o with_o all_o humility_n of_o soul_n and_o body_n yet_o they_o do_v not_o feel_v those_o flight_n of_o devotion_n those_o melt_a and_o languish_v passion_n which_o some_o good_a man_n â—eel_v or_o if_o at_o any_o time_n they_o be_v transport_v beyond_o themselves_o and_o feel_v their_o heart_n all_o on_o fire_n with_o love_n and_o devotion_n these_o fit_n be_v but_o short_a these_o boiling_n and_o fermentation_n go_v off_o and_o they_o return_v to_o a_o calm_a and_o even_a temper_n and_o then_o they_o think_v they_o grow_v cold_a and_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v forsake_v they_o now_o it_o be_v plain_a also_o that_o these_o man_n conscience_n do_v not_o condemn_v they_o for_o they_o charge_v they_o with_o no_o such_o guilt_n as_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n will_v condemn_v they_o for_o but_o they_o be_v condemn_v only_o by_o false_a opinion_n or_o by_o a_o misguide_a and_o disturb_a fancy_n in_o both_o these_o case_n man_n absolve_v or_o condemn_v themselves_o not_o by_o the_o judgement_n and_o testimony_n of_o conscience_n but_o by_o their_o mistake_a notion_n and_o opinion_n and_o god_n be_v not_o concern_v to_o confirm_v and_o ratify_v such_o a_o judgement_n the_o sum_n be_v this_o when_o st._n john_n tell_v we_o that_o if_o our_o conscience_n condemn_v we_o god_n will_v condemn_v we_o but_o if_o our_o conscience_n do_v not_o condemn_v we_o neither_o will_n god_n condemn_v we_o he_o more_o but_o this_o whether_o we_o have_v obey_v or_o disobey_v the_o law_n of_o the_o gospel_n whether_o we_o have_v do_v those_o thing_n which_o the_o gospel_n threaten_v to_o punish_v or_o which_o it_o promise_v to_o reward_v but_o when_o we_o judge_v our_o action_n by_o false_a notion_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a contrary_a to_o the_o gospel_n of_o our_o saviour_n we_o judge_v by_o a_o false_a rule_n and_o then_o our_o judgement_n must_v be_v false_a and_o when_o we_o judge_v ourselves_o not_o by_o the_o nature_n of_o our_o work_n as_o god_n will_v judge_v we_o and_o as_o conscience_n judge_n but_o by_o opinion_n and_o fancy_n and_o some_o arbitrary_a and_o enthusiastic_a mark_n and_o sign_n this_o be_v not_o the_o judgement_n of_o conscience_n which_o judge_n only_o of_o our_o work_n but_o the_o judgement_n of_o private_a opinion_n conceit_n and_o fancy_n and_o though_o god_n will_v judge_v we_o as_o conscience_n judge_n yet_o he_o will_v not_o judge_v we_o as_o opinion_n fancy_n enthusiasm_n or_o melancholy_a judge_v we_o thus_o we_o see_v how_o we_o may_v know_v what_o our_o sentence_n shall_v be_v at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n two_o sort_n of_o man_n may_v certain_o know_v what_o their_o sentence_n shall_v be_v and_o a_o three_o sort_n may_v know_v the_o great_a danger_n they_o be_v in_o if_o they_o will_v but_o listen_v to_o the_o judgement_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n man_n who_o conscience_n absolute_o condemn_v they_o may_v certain_o expect_v that_o god_n will_v condemn_v they_o for_o when_o their_o guilt_n be_v so_o notorious_a that_o
