next_o upon_o the_o know_n of_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n and_o a_o promise_n next_o upon_o a_o satisfaction_n and_o the_o lord_n jesus_n the_o worker_n of_o it_o next_o upon_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n convince_a of_o the_o curse_n next_o upon_o the_o knowledge_n of_o sin_n next_o upon_o the_o knowledge_n of_o creation_n i_o go_v backward_o that_o the_o simple_a may_v understand_v the_o coherence_n so_o that_o by_o this_o chain_n of_o doctrine_n the_o last_o link_n whereof_o that_o be_v creation_n and_o the_o fall_n be_v the_o first_o in_o order_n and_o so_o downward_o every_o one_o may_v see_v that_o a_o mere_a receiver_n be_v not_o only_o to_o know_v the_o nature_n and_o use_n of_o the_o supper_n but_o of_o sin_n of_o the_o law_n of_o pardon_n christ_n and_o the_o new_a creature_n without_o which_o a_o sacrament_n several_o consider_v be_v a_o mere_a shred_n a_o idol_n a_o object_n of_o blind_a devotion_n to_o apply_v what_o i_o have_v say_v both_o negative_o and_o affirmative_o it_o application_n of_o it_o this_o i_o say_v that_o although_o in_o all_o these_o seven_o somewhat_o there_o be_v which_o every_o receiver_n comprehend_v not_o full_o yet_o the_o substance_n of_o truth_n in_o general_n be_v to_o be_v know_v by_o he_o except_o he_o will_v come_v to_o he_o know_v not_o what_o nor_o why_o for_o example_n perhaps_o some_o poor_a soul_n distinguish_v not_o the_o mean_n of_o salvation_n one_o from_o another_o public_a private_a ordinary_a extraordinary_a in_o the_o name_n and_o nature_n of_o each_o one_o yet_o its_o necessary_a that_o he_o know_v the_o supper_n to_o be_v a_o mean_a of_o god_n ordain_v for_o his_o grow_v in_o grace_n so_o again_o perhaps_o every_o one_o can_v distinguish_v between_o the_o habit_n of_o a_o new_a creature_n and_o the_o operation_n of_o holiness_n issue_v thence_o yet_o its_o necessary_a that_o he_o know_v all_o god_n people_n must_v be_v holy_a say_v again_o all_o can_v tell_v how_o many_o kind_n of_o faith_n there_o be_v by_o what_o step_v faith_n be_v wrought_v what_o be_v contain_v in_o a_o promise_n what_o christ_n have_v in_o special_a obey_v in_o or_o suffer_v what_o the_o several_a work_n of_o the_o law_n be_v how_o many_o kind_n of_o sin_n there_o be_v and_o by_o what_o mean_v adam_n be_v derive_v to_o we_o yet_o necessary_a it_o be_v that_o he_o be_v convince_v of_o all_o these_o in_o their_o nature_n general_o and_o find_v they_o wought_v in_o himself_o particular_o and_o sure_o if_o none_o may_v receive_v at_o all_o save_v he_o who_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n needs_o it_o must_v follow_v that_o the_o lesser_a must_v be_v where_o the_o great_a must_v be_v i_o mean_v that_o knowledge_n there_o must_v be_v of_o all_o these_o where_o faith_n must_v be_v to_o give_v a_o man_n his_o special_a portion_n in_o they_o howbeit_o because_o now_o we_o be_v about_o the_o trial_n of_o knowledge_n apart_o from_o the_o other_o and_o doubtless_o many_o both_o minister_n and_o people_n teach_v and_o hear_v this_o point_n of_o knowledge_n as_o a_o thing_n sufficient_a to_o enable_v a_o receiver_n though_o i_o abhor_v their_o opinion_n as_o shall_v appear_v in_o the_o sequel_n yet_o i_o will_v by_o this_o i_o have_v say_v stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o any_o such_o as_o dream_v of_o a_o knowledge_n which_o be_v not_o competent_a to_o salvation_n sure_o it_o be_v a_o knowledge_n incompetent_a for_o salvation_n can_v be_v competent_a for_o the_o supper_n a_o demand_n some_o might_n here_o perhaps_o ask_v how_o they_o may_v be_v direct_v to_o know_v these_o point_n sound_o to_o wit_n of_o the_o supper_n and_o sacrament_n and_o all_o those_o doctrine_n which_o they_o depend_v upon_o answer_n i_o answer_v that_o belong_v not_o to_o this_o chapter_n but_o the_o reader_n shall_v find_v they_o all_o handle_v in_o my_o practical_a catechism_n at_o large_a and_o brief_o touch_v in_o the_o second_o chapter_n of_o this_o second_o treatise_n and_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o sacrament_n especial_o the_o supper_n be_v handle_v at_o large_a in_o the_o former_a treatise_n the_o three_o last_o chapter_n to_o which_o i_o send_v the_o reader_n with_o this_o caution_n that_o i_o handle_v these_o thing_n at_o large_a here_o and_o there_o not_o to_o the_o end_n that_o my_o book_n shall_v never_o come_v into_o their_o hand_n save_v when_o they_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n for_o to_o what_o purpose_n be_v that_o but_o that_o they_o due_o exercise_v themselves_o in_o read_v of_o the_o whole_a that_o note_v those_o especial_a thing_n whi●h_v they_o most_o need_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o knowledge_n and_o trial_n they_o may_v be_v able_a to_o turn_v to_o they_o and_o make_v use_n of_o they_o familiar_o when_o they_o come_v to_o the_o supper_n i_o shall_v now_o come_v to_o the_o three_o branch_n how_o a_o man_n may_v try_v himself_o about_o this_o knowledge_n but_o i_o consider_v that_o this_o will_v better_o come_v in_o in_o the_o use_n of_o exhortation_n i_o will_v refer_v it_o therefore_o to_o that_o place_n and_o be_v the_o breefer_v in_o other_o use_n insist_v somewhat_o more_o full_o in_o that_o use_v 1_o first_o then_o let_v this_o doctrine_n teach_v we_o to_o abhor_v the_o woeful_a superstition_n of_o popish_a sacrament_n and_o the_o woeful_a ignorance_n of_o popish_a receiver_n confutation_n exhortation_n with_o confutation_n who_o not_o only_o in_o practice_n but_o even_o in_o doctrine_n maintain_v ignorance_n to_o be_v the_o mother_n of_o devotion_n and_o so_o hatch_v in_o their_o bosom_n all_o ignorant_a one_o as_o principal_a member_n of_o their_o curse_a synagogue_n and_o to_o say_v truth_n their_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o mass_n be_v itself_o a_o mass_n of_o confusion_n have_v no_o colour_n of_o bottom_n out_o of_o the_o word_n who_o but_o the_o blind_a be_v meet_v for_o it_o who_o but_o the_o deceive_v as_o willing_a to_o be_v lead_v by_o blind_a guide_n as_o they_o be_v to_o
