therefore_o since_o god_n who_o be_v all_o life_n and_o activity_n be_v every_o where_o he_o must_v operate_v every_o where_o and_o if_o he_o operate_v every_o where_o that_o operation_n be_v a_o universal_a providence_n iu._n and_o last_o if_o there_o be_v a_o god_n he_o must_v be_v endow_v with_o all_o those_o active_a perfection_n of_o power_n and_o wisdom_n justice_n and_o goodness_n all_o which_o must_v be_v present_a wheresoever_o he_o be_v for_o as_o for_o power_n it_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o spring_n or_o fountain_n of_o causality_n and_o therefore_o since_o god_n be_v the_o first_o cause_n he_o must_v necessary_o be_v the_o spring_n of_o the_o power_n of_o all_o cause_n and_o that_o from_o which_o all_o power_n be_v derive_v must_n itself_o be_v all-powerful_a otherwise_o it_o will_v derive_v more_o power_n than_o it_o have_v and_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o that_o whereof_o it_o have_v no_o causality_n which_o be_v a_o contradiction_n and_o then_o as_o for_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n they_o be_v inseparable_a to_o perfect_a power_n which_o how_o forcible_a soever_o it_o be_v can_v be_v perfect_a except_o it_o be_v conduct_v by_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n for_o without_o these_o power_n be_v only_o a_o irresistible_a whirlwind_n that_o sweep_v and_o hurry_v all_o thing_n before_o it_o without_o any_o end_n or_o method_n or_o order_n and_o what_o a_o to_o effect_v they_o and_o in_o a_o word_n that_o can_v neither_o intend_v well_o nor_o prosecute_v wise_o if_o therefore_o the_o power_n of_o god_n be_v perfect_a as_o it_o can_v but_o be_v be_v the_o original_a of_o all_o power_n it_o must_v necessary_o be_v conjoin_v with_o perfect_a wisdom_n and_o goodness_n with_o perfect_a goodness_n to_o level_v its_o intention_n at_o good_a and_o beneficial_a end_n with_o perfect_a wisdom_n to_o order_n and_o direct_v its_o prosecution_n since_o therefore_o perfect_a power_n and_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n be_v essential_a to_o god_n they_o must_v be_v coextend_v with_o his_o essence_n which_o as_o i_o show_v before_o be_v extend_v to_o all_o thing_n and_o how_o can_v we_o conceive_v such_o active_a perfection_n as_o these_o to_o be_v present_a with_o all_o thing_n without_o ever_o act_v upon_o they_o for_o the_o very_a end_n and_o perfection_n of_o all_o these_o attribute_n consist_v in_o their_o exercise_n for_o so_o the_o end_n of_o power_n be_v action_n the_o end_n of_o wisdom_n be_v order_v and_o contrive_v and_o the_o end_n of_o goodness_n be_v do_v good_a how_o then_o can_v we_o suppose_v that_o a_o infinite_a power_n who_o end_n be_v action_n shall_v be_v present_a where_o a_o world_n of_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v do_v and_o do_v nothing_o that_o infinite_a wisdom_n who_o end_n be_v order_v and_o contrive_v shall_v be_v present_a where_o a_o world_n of_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v order_v and_o order_v nothing_o or_o that_o infinite_a goodness_n who_o end_n be_v do_v good_a shall_v be_v present_a where_o a_o world_n of_o good_a be_v to_o be_v do_v and_o do_v none_o at_o all_o what_o be_v this_o but_o to_o transform_v the_o divine_a perfection_n into_o senesless_a idol_n that_o have_v eye_n but_o see_v not_o hands_z but_o act_n not_o that_o have_v boundless_a boundless_a but_o useless_a and_o unactive_a power_n that_o have_v glorious_a name_n but_o in_o reality_n stand_v but_o for_o so_o many_o cipher_n in_o the_o world_n and_o thus_o i_o have_v endeavour_v to_o demonstrate_v a_o providence_n by_o argument_n draw_v from_o god_n himself_o but_o because_o there_o may_v be_v something_o in_o they_o too_o subtle_a and_o metaphysical_a for_o common_a apprehension_n to_o reach_v i_o have_v but_o brief_o insist_v on_o they_o i_o proceed_v therefore_o in_o the_o second_o place_n to_o another_o sort_n of_o argument_n which_o be_v more_o easy_a and_o obvious_a viz._n such_o as_o be_v draw_v from_o sensible_a effect_n of_o which_o i_o shall_v give_v these_o six_o instance_n 1._o the_o constant_a direction_n of_o thing_n to_o the_o same_o good_a end_n which_o have_v no_o design_n in_o themselves_o 2._o the_o watchful_a providence_n of_o thing_n which_o have_v no_o foresight_n in_o themselves_o 3._o the_o mutual_a agreement_n and_o correspondency_n of_o thing_n which_o have_v no_o understanding_n of_o themselves_o or_o of_o one_o another_o 4._o the_o continuation_n of_o thing_n in_o the_o same_o comely_a order_n which_o have_v no_o government_n of_o themselves_o 5._o miraculous_a event_n 6._o prediction_n of_o future_a and_o remote_a contingency_n i._o one_o sensible_a instance_n of_o a_o divine_a providence_n be_v the_o constant_a direction_n of_o thing_n to_o the_o same_o good_a end_n which_o have_v no_o design_n in_o themselves_o when_o we_o see_v thing_n void_a of_o all_o sense_n and_o reason_n as_o constant_o direct_v to_o good_a end_n as_o they_o can_v be_v if_o they_o have_v sense_n and_o reason_n we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o there_o be_v a_o reason_n without_o they_o that_o frame_v they_o for_o those_o end_n and_o direct_v they_o to_o they_o it_o be_v unconceivable_a how_o chance_n or_o blind_a necessity_n that_o have_v no_o design_n or_o art_n or_o contrivance_n in_o they_o shall_v constant_o operate_v as_o regular_o as_o reason_n itself_o now_o if_o we_o survey_v this_o vast_a universality_n of_o thing_n we_o may_v easy_o observe_v at_o least_o of_o the_o generality_n of_o they_o that_o they_o be_v frame_v for_o and_o direct_v to_o some_o wise_a and_o excellent_a end_n and_o though_o through_o our_o own_o short-sightedness_n or_o want_n of_o enquiry_n we_o do_v not_o see_v the_o use_n and_o tendency_n of_o they_o all_o yet_o this_o be_v no_o argument_n at_o all_o that_o they_o be_v vain_a and_o superfluous_a for_o as_o we_o now_o see_v the_o use_n of_o a_o world_n of_o thing_n which_o past_a generation_n understand_v not_o so_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o future_a generation_n will_v understand_v the_o use_n of_o a_o world_n more_o than_o we_o and_o therefore_o since_o the_o vsefulness_n of_o the_o generality_n of_o thing_n be_v now_o so_o apparent_a and_o visible_a we_o ought_v in_o all_o reason_n to_o conclude_v that_o our_o not_o discern_v the_o vsefulness_n of_o they_o all_o proceed_v not_o from_o their_o defect_n but_o from_o our_o own_o ignorance_n let_v we_o therefore_o brief_o survey_v this_o beautiful_a scene_n of_o thing_n that_o be_v before_o we_o the_o sun_n and_o earth_n for_o instance_n be_v thing_n that_o be_v utter_o void_a of_o understanding_n and_o therefore_o can_v have_v no_o design_n or_o immense_a space_n they_o may_v have_v find_v ten_o thousand_o million_o of_o other_o place_n and_o distance_n to_o fix_v in_o the_o earth_n may_v have_v find_v room_n enough_o to_o place_v itself_o either_o much_o near_o too_o or_o much_o remote_a from_o the_o sun_n than_o it_o be_v but_o if_o it_o have_v do_v so_o it_o must_v have_v either_o be_v everlasting_o parch_v or_o everlasting_o freeze_v and_o benight_a and_o either_o way_n convert_v into_o a_o useless_a barren_a and_o inhabitable_a desert_n whereas_o where_o it_o now_o be_v it_o stand_v at_o the_o most_o convenient_a distance_n from_o the_o sun_n to_o be_v warm_v and_o cherish_v by_o his_o enliven_a fire_n and_o neither_o to_o be_v roast_v by_o be_v too_o near_o they_o nor_o freeze_v by_o be_v too_o far_o from_o they_o but_o to_o receive_v from_o they_o such_o a_o temperate_a heat_n as_o be_v sufficient_a to_o excite_v its_o seminal_a virtue_n and_o to_o draw_v up_o its_o juice_n into_o they_o and_o thereby_o to_o ripen_v its_o natural_a fruit_n and_o in_o a_o word_n to_o comfort_v and_o refresh_v its_o inhabitant_n and_o to_o render_v it_o to_o they_o a_o pleasant_a a_o healthful_a and_o a_o fruitful_a paradise_n since_o therefore_o of_o ten_o thousand_o million_o of_o place_n wherein_o it_o may_v have_v fix_v in_o that_o immensity_n of_o space_n that_o surround_v it_o it_o have_v fix_v upon_o and_o do_v still_o continue_v in_o the_o best_a without_o any_o design_n or_o wisdom_n of_o its_o own_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o there_o be_v a_o overrule_a wisdom_n without_o it_o that_o choose_v
difficulty_n it_o be_v because_o their_o power_n be_v weak_a and_o not_o able_a to_o conquer_v without_o struggle_v the_o resistance_n of_o the_o object_n upon_o which_o they_o operate_v but_o against_o perfect_a and_o infinite_a power_n there_o be_v no_o object_n can_v make_v such_o resistance_n as_o to_o put_v they_o upon_o struggle_v and_o labour_n so_o that_o to_o a_o omniscient_a and_o omnipotent_a mind_n there_o can_v be_v nothing_o difficult_a to_o be_v know_v or_o effect_v and_o it_o be_v altogether_o as_o easy_a to_o it_o to_o know_v all_o thing_n that_o be_v knowable_a and_o do_v all_o thing_n that_o be_v possible_a as_o to_o know_v or_o do_v any_o one_o thing_n whatsoever_o because_o whatsoever_o it_o do_v it_o do_v perfect_o how_o then_o can_v the_o government_n of_o the_o world_n be_v difficult_a or_o uneasy_a to_o god_n who_o knowledge_n and_o power_n be_v perfect_a and_o infinite_a and_o consequent_o can_v inspect_v and_o govern_v all_o the_o being_n in_o the_o world_n with_o as_o much_o facility_n as_o if_o they_o have_v only_o one_o be_v to_o take_v care_n of_o and_o if_o one_o man_n can_v with_o ease_n manage_v one_o business_n which_o he_o perfect_o understand_v why_o may_v not_o god_n manage_v all_o who_o understand_v all_o better_a than_o we_o understand_v any_o one_o and_o suppose_v the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n be_v infinite_a yet_o since_o god_n knowledge_n and_o power_n be_v infinite_a too_o there_o be_v the_o very_a same_o proportion_n of_o infinite_a to_o infinite_a as_o of_o one_o to_o one._n for_o it_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v that_o the_o natural_a tendency_n of_o infinite_a power_n be_v to_o action_n of_o infinite_a wisdom_n to_o contrivance_n of_o infinite_a goodness_n to_o beneficence_n and_o how_o can_v we_o imagine_v that_o it_o shall_v be_v any_o disturbance_n to_o god_n to_o follow_v the_o inclination_n of_o his_o own_o perfection_n and_o therefore_o since_o it_o be_v equal_o easy_a to_o his_o infinite_a power_n and_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n to_o exert_v themselves_o in_o a_o large_a sphere_n of_o action_n contrivance_n and_o beneficence_n as_o in_o a_o narrow_a why_o shall_v it_o more_o disturb_v he_o to_o govern_v a_o whole_a world_n than_o one_o single_a be_v it_o will_v doubtless_o be_v rather_o a_o disturbance_n to_o he_o to_o act_v nothing_o to_o contrive_v nothing_o and_o to_o do_v no_o good_a because_o this_o will_v be_v to_o cross_v the_o inclination_n of_o his_o own_o perfection_n but_o since_o it_o be_v as_o easy_a to_o he_o to_o exercise_v those_o perfection_n about_o many_o thing_n as_o about_o few_o to_o exercise_v they_o about_o a_o world_n of_o thing_n must_v rather_o be_v a_o delight_n than_o a_o disturbance_n to_o he_o because_o the_o more_o he_o exercise_v they_o the_o more_o he_o comply_v with_o their_o natural_a tendency_n and_o inclination_n and_o what_o though_o this_o world_n be_v a_o great_a and_o cumbersome_a mass_n of_o thing_n it_o can_v be_v no_o labour_n to_o god_n to_o move_v and_o actuate_v it_o who_o as_o a_o universal_a soul_n be_v diffuse_v through_o it_o and_o vital_o present_a with_o every_o part_n of_o it_o for_o he_o move_v it_o not_o as_o body_n move_v body_n by_o thrust_v and_o pressure_n but_o as_o soul_n move_v body_n by_o thought_n and_o will_n and_o as_o our_o soul_n do_v move_v its_o body_n and_o determine_v the_o motion_n of_o its_o member_n mere_o by_o think_v and_o will_v without_o any_o material_a pressure_n without_o any_o machine_n or_o engine_n even_o so_o god_n who_o be_v the_o great_a soul_n of_o the_o world_n do_v actuate_v every_o part_n and_o regulate_v every_o motion_n of_o it_o without_o any_o laborious_a heave_n or_o thrusting_n mere_o by_o the_o all-commanding_a influence_n of_o his_o own_o almighty_a thought_n and_o will._n and_o if_o it_o be_v no_o labour_n to_o our_o soul_n to_o think_v and_o will_v and_o therewithal_o to_o move_v our_o body_n why_o shall_v we_o think_v it_o any_o labour_n to_o god_n by_o the_o same_o operation_n to_o move_v the_o world_n for_o suppose_v our_o soul_n be_v clothe_v with_o a_o body_n as_o large_a as_o the_o whole_a universe_n and_o be_v but_o vital_o present_a with_o every_o part_n of_o it_o it_o will_v doubtless_o move_v it_o all_o with_o as_o much_o ease_n and_o command_v it_o every_o way_n with_o as_o much_o freedom_n as_o it_o do_v the_o body_n wherein_o it_o now_o reside_v how_o then_o can_v it_o be_v difficult_a to_o a_o perfect_a mind_n which_o penetrate_v all_o through_o and_o coexi_v with_o every_o part_n of_o this_o material_a world_n to_o move_v and_o actuate_v the_o whole_a and_o moderate_v all_o the_o motion_n of_o it_o according_a to_o its_o own_o will_n and_o pleasure_n iii_o it_o be_v far_a object_v against_o a_o providence_n that_o it_o be_v not_o consistent_a with_o the_o manifold_a evil_n both_o moral_a and_o natural_a which_o we_o behold_v in_o this_o world_n if_o there_o be_v a_o just_a and_o gracious_a providence_n overrule_a the_o world_n how_o can_v it_o be_v imagine_v that_o it_o shall_v ever_o permit_v so_o many_o irregularity_n as_o we_o every_o day_n behold_v in_o man_n life_n and_o manner_n or_o suffer_v so_o many_o calamity_n and_o misery_n to_o befall_v its_o subject_n both_o which_o as_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o be_v very_o fair_o consistent_a with_o a_o just_a and_o therefore_o no_o will_n can_v be_v essential_o good_a but_o that_o which_o be_v guide_v by_o a_o infallible_a mind_n and_o since_o no_o mind_n can_v be_v essential_o infallible_a but_o one_o that_o be_v omniscient_a it_o necessary_o follow_v that_o to_o be_v free_a to_o good_a and_o evil_a be_v as_o natural_a to_o all_o reasonable_a creature_n as_o to_o be_v finite_a in_o knowledge_n and_o understanding_n and_o according_o our_o saviour_n declare_v that_o to_o be_v natural_o and_o essential_o good_a be_v the_o incommunicable_a prerogative_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n luke_n 18.19_o and_o if_o so_o then_o either_o god_n must_v have_v make_v we_o free_a to_o good_a and_o evil_a or_o not_o have_v make_v we_o at_o all_o and_o there_o must_v have_v be_v no_o such_o order_n of_o be_v as_o man_n and_o angel_n which_o be_v the_o crown_n and_o glory_n of_o all_o the_o creation_n and_o be_v it_o not_o much_o better_a that_o there_o shall_v be_v such_o being_n than_o that_o there_o ever_o unprovided_a for_o wherefore_o since_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n be_v so_o infinite_o fruitful_a as_o to_o communicate_v itself_o in_o different_a degree_n of_o perfection_n to_o all_o possibility_n of_o be_v that_o so_o there_o may_v be_v no_o kind_a want_v to_o complete_a the_o universe_n it_o be_v requisite_a that_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o mean_a degree_n of_o perfection_n and_o exercise_v our_o virtue_n so_o it_o be_v also_o very_a assistant_n thereunto_o for_o that_o providence_n do_v general_o and_o not_o universal_o bless_v and_o prosper_v good_a man_n be_v a_o just_a reason_n to_o conclude_v that_o all_o be_v under_o a_o free_a almighty_a agent_n that_o rule_v the_o world_n according_a to_o the_o determination_n of_o his_o own_o will._n as_o this_o way_n of_o providence_n viz._n to_o interweave_v into_o good_a man_n fortune_n adversity_n with_o prosperity_n be_v in_o this_o respect_n very_o advantageous_a to_o their_o faith_n so_o be_v it_o also_o life_n instead_o of_o be_v a_o probation_n to_o either_o will_v be_v the_o heaven_n of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o hell_n of_o the_o other_o and_o since_o some_o affliction_n be_v necessary_a to_o try_v
