production_n and_o conservation_n the_o order_n of_o this_o law_n be_v that_o whereby_o the_o parent_n of_o all_o thing_n have_v dispose_v the_o immortal_a god_n in_o several_a degree_n for_o punishment_n the_o first_o refer_v the_o cause_n of_o judgement_n to_o the_o liberty_n of_o the_o will_n which_o prefer_v evil_a the_o last_o to_o the_o reason_n of_o legal_a discipline_n which_o follow_v the_o quality_n of_o the_o offence_n now_o the_o law_n reconcile_v both_o these_o which_o take_v care_n that_o all_o may_v be_v well_o as_o far_o as_o it_o can_v and_o nothing_o amiss_o for_o that_o pre-existing_a in_o the_o divine_a goodness_n will_v not_o suffer_v the_o evil_a to_o go_v unpunished_a lest_o a_o continue_a and_o chronical_a wickedness_n induce_v a_o oblivion_n of_o all_o good_a who_o necessary_a remembrance_n be_v keep_v alive_a by_o the_o justice_n of_o those_o who_o have_v the_o charge_n of_o the_o law_n the_o law_n therefore_o join_v together_o as_o it_o be_v say_v those_o who_o part_n be_v to_o judge_v and_o those_o who_o be_v to_o be_v punish_v that_o it_o may_v work_v out_o a_o peculiar_a good_a from_o both_o for_o if_o it_o be_v more_o advantageous_a to_o suffer_v punishment_n than_o not_o and_o if_o justice_n inflict_v some_o hurt_n to_o correct_v and_o retrench_v the_o luxuriancy_n of_o evil_n it_o be_v plain_a that_o the_o law_n that_o it_o may_v his_o head_n but_o when_o the_o same_o man_n be_v injure_v himself_o he_o wish_v there_o be_v one_o to_o redress_v his_o injury_n it_o be_v fit_a therefore_o that_o they_o who_o do_v injury_n shall_v feel_v the_o evil_n of_o it_o themselves_o so_o that_o what_o they_o do_v not_o see_v in_o the_o commission_n be_v besot_v and_o blind_v with_o covetousness_n they_o may_v learn_v by_o the_o without_o doubt_n their_o example_n will_v be_v a_o lesson_n of_o instruction_n to_o the_o wise_a who_o consider_v the_o cause_n of_o their_o suffering_n now_o the_o most_o proper_a principle_n of_o judgement_n we_o take_v to_o be_v these_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n the_o law_n proceed_v from_o it_o and_o the_o inherent_a law_n of_o right-reason_n which_o be_v transgress_v and_o though_o a_o domestic_a god_n impious_o affront_v but_o the_o event_n of_o this_o judgement_n be_v those_o grievance_n which_o render_v our_o life_n unpleasant_a through_o bodily_a pain_n these_o we_o be_v command_v by_o the_o verse_n to_o bear_v meek_o by_o look_v into_o their_o cause_n to_o prevent_v they_o what_o we_o can_v and_o to_o turn_v to_o our_o advantage_n what_o seem_v hurtful_a and_o above_o all_o by_o the_o most_o exalt_a virtue_n to_o render_v ourselves_o worthy_a to_o partake_v of_o the_o divine_a good_a but_o if_o any_o one_o be_v not_o yet_o ripe_a for_o that_o yet_o let_v he_o at_o least_o attain_v to_o civil_a good_a by_o the_o help_n of_o middle_a virtue_n for_o this_o be_v that_o whereby_o he_o exhort_v we_o to_o bear_v affliction_n mild_o and_o generous_o and_o to_o cure_v ourselves_o of_o they_o what_o other_o remedy_n can_v there_o be_v beside_o what_o have_v be_v say_v by_o which_o the_o grief_n of_o suffering_n may_v appear_v consonant_n to_o reason_n and_o a_o method_n of_o cure_n be_v find_v out_o the_o sum_n of_o all_o be_v this_o god_n the_o lawgiver_n and_o judge_n countenance_n what_o be_v good_a and_o take_v away_o what_o be_v evil_a so_o retribution_n can_v be_v make_v to_o all_o for_o that_o will_v neither_o be_v equitable_a in_o itself_o nor_o profitable_a to_o we_o the_o difference_n of_o the_o matter_n under_o judgement_n shall_v give_v a_o difference_n in_o sentence_n for_o how_o can_v he_o be_v think_v worthy_a of_o the_o same_o with_o another_o who_o be_v not_o like_o he_o the_o divine_a fortune_n be_v therefore_o to_o be_v bear_v meek_o neither_o ought_v he_o to_o take_v it_o heinous_o who_o suffer_v punishment_n and_o be_v purge_v as_o much_o as_o god_n think_v fit_a from_o those_o thing_n which_o seem_v to_o clog_v the_o pleasure_n of_o life_n such_o reason_n as_o this_o will_v cure_v we_o of_o our_o former_a offence_n and_o convert_v we_o to_o our_o right_a reason_n for_o the_o future_a for_o how_o can_v it_o be_v but_o that_o he_o who_o know_v misery_n to_o be_v the_o fruit_n of_o vice_n avoid_v the_o path_n which_o lead_v thither_o beside_o if_o it_o be_v at_o all_o convenient_a to_o be_v angry_a under_o affliction_n he_o will_v think_v it_o more_o reasonable_a to_o be_v angry_a with_o himself_o that_o with_o god_n who_o put_v a_o stop_n to_o his_o wickedness_n by_o the_o instrument_n of_o justice_n whereby_o he_o may_v be_v bring_v to_o the_o knowledge_n and_o remembrance_n of_o the_o divine_a law_n so_o that_o it_o will_v be_v his_o own_o fault_n if_o he_o fall_v into_o calamity_n for_o affliction_n be_v not_o distribute_v to_o man_n by_o chance_n if_o there_o be_v a_o god_n over_o we_o and_o bound_n of_o justice_n proportion_v every_o man_n lot_n to_o his_o merit_n wherefore_o it_o be_v a_o true_a say_n that_o calamity_n fall_n not_o much_o upon_o good_a men._n for_o first_o will_v bear_v they_o patient_o as_o the_o good_a pleasure_n of_o heaven_n and_o then_o through_o the_o help_n of_o their_o virtue_n which_o alleviate_v the_o most_o poignant_a calamity_n beside_o there_o be_v good_a hope_n that_o the_o residue_n of_o our_o life_n shall_v not_o be_v trouble_v with_o beside_o our_o affliction_n will_v be_v heal_v if_o by_o patience_n we_o learn_v the_o method_n of_o cure_n for_o how_o can_v they_o supplicate_v god_n in_o a_o manner_n become_v his_o majesty_n who_o deny_v his_o providence_n and_o justice_n to_o be_v exercise_v about_o humane_a affair_n and_o that_o our_o immortal_a soul_n have_v a_o share_n in_o those_o outward_a thing_n as_o by_o her_o own_o voluntary_a motion_n she_o render_v herself_o worthy_a for_o whence_o he_o will_v find_v occasion_n to_o bear_v this_o present_a fortune_n patient_o that_o do_v not_o refer_v it_o to_o these_o thing_n be_v not_o be_v imagine_v much_o less_o how_o he_o shall_v cure_v it_o for_o he_o can_v rest_v content_v in_o affliction_n as_o thing_n indifferent_a or_o better_a than_o the_o contrary_n for_o in_o themselves_o consider_v they_o be_v to_o be_v avoid_v as_o full_a of_o grief_n and_o trouble_n our_o nature_n do_v not_o affect_v such_o thing_n as_o desirable_a for_o themselves_o unless_o some_o good_a be_v expect_v to_o accrue_v to_o we_o from_o the_o suffering_n of_o evil_n there_o be_v a_o necessity_n therefore_o of_o impatience_n and_o uneasiness_n and_o that_o our_o misery_n be_v augment_v from_o the_o ignorance_n of_o ourselves_o and_o yet_o that_o we_o suffer_v punishment_n nevertheless_o but_o our_o
great_a wickedness_n will_v be_v to_o think_v the_o world_n destitute_a of_o or_o ill_o administer_v by_o providence_n for_o this_o come_v all_o to_o one_o to_o think_v there_o be_v no_o god_n or_o if_o there_o be_v that_o he_o exercise_v no_o providence_n or_o if_o he_o do_v yet_o that_o it_o be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o remove_v from_o he_o all_o goodness_n and_o justice_n which_o be_v a_o opinion_n full_a of_o all_o manner_n of_o impiety_n and_o which_o drive_v into_o all_o wickedness_n those_o who_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v lead_v by_o such_o doctrine_n for_o as_o piety_n be_v have_v learn_v to_o bear_v they_o patient_o and_o this_o be_v to_o be_v do_v only_o by_o philosophy_n which_o exact_o know_v the_o nature_n of_o thing_n and_o their_o consequent_a operation_n who_o series_n and_o order_n be_v the_o administration_n of_o all_o thing_n from_o which_o necessary_o arise_v the_o divine_a fortune_n or_o fate_n which_o as_o we_o have_v say_v be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o retribution_n give_v to_o every_o one_o according_a to_o his_o desert_n which_o depend_v upon_o god_n providence_n the_o good_a order_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o will_n of_o man._n for_o if_o there_o be_v no_o divine_a providence_n there_o will_v not_o be_v that_o order_n in_o the_o world_n which_o one_o may_v call_v fate_n and_o if_o none_o of_o the_o other_o there_o will_v be_v no_o they_o also_o there_o be_v punishment_n and_o judgement_n and_o the_o consideration_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n since_o there_o be_v so_o much_o exactness_n in_o our_o concern_v for_o first_o inanimate_a thing_n be_v as_o common_a matter_n to_o plant_n animal_n and_o man_n and_o then_o some_o animal_n be_v common_a food_n for_o other_o and_o for_o men._n so_o that_o they_o do_v the_o same_o to_o one_o another_o not_o with_o any_o regard_n to_o the_o merit_n of_o they_o that_o suffer_v but_o either_o to_o satisfy_v their_o own_o hunger_n or_o to_o cure_v a_o disease_n in_o a_o word_n to_o relieve_v their_o necessity_n which_o way_n soever_o they_o can_v so_o that_o the_o infelicity_n of_o brute_n be_v occasion_v by_o the_o supply_n of_o our_o need_n and_o their_o seem_a happiness_n depend_v upon_o our_o favour_n if_o it_o be_v therefore_o urge_v by_o any_o that_o there_o may_v be_v some_o being_n more_o excellent_a than_o ourselves_o which_o may_v abuse_v we_o to_o supply_v their_o want_n as_o we_o seem_v to_o use_v brute_n to_o supply_v we_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o they_o be_v mortal_a and_o make_v appear_v that_o the_o body_n of_o man_n be_v spend_v upon_o their_o use_n but_o if_o nothing_o superior_a to_o man_n be_v mortal_a since_o he_o himself_o be_v the_o low_a of_o all_o intelligent-being_n and_o for_o this_o reason_n come_v of_o necessity_n into_o a_o mortal_a body_n though_o immortal_a and_o take_v a_o organ_n of_o affinity_n with_o brute_n converse_v here_o upon_o earth_n there_o can_v be_v no_o be_v which_o may_v abuse_v our_o the_o pythagorean_n who_o will_v have_v nothing_o mortal_a to_o be_v the_o immediate_a production_n of_o god_n and_o that_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v make_v of_o the_o same_o temperament_n with_o the_o mundane_a god_n demon_n and_o illustrious_a hero_n and_o therefore_o that_o providence_n be_v conspicuous_a in_o every_o man_n after_o what_o manner_n he_o be_v distant_a from_o they_o there_o after_o what_o manner_n he_o aspire_v to_o they_o after_o what_o manner_n he_o live_v here_o and_o after_o what_o manner_n he_o depart_v hence_o thither_o none_o of_o all_o which_o be_v to_o be_v do_v concern_v a_o irrational_a nature_n for_o neither_o can_v that_o come_v to_o god_n which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v wrought_v on_o by_o moral_a persuasion_n neither_o can_v that_o converse_v upon_o earth_n which_o be_v natural_o a_o heavenly_a plant_n neither_o be_v it_o apt_a to_o be_v translate_v into_o its_o proper_a orb._n and_o so_o much_o by_o way_n of_o apology_n to_o malcontent_n who_o endeavour_n to_o undermine_v the_o be_v of_o providence_n to_o who_o this_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v say_v over_o and_o above_o that_o the_o great_a argument_n of_o a_o rational_a and_o consider_a frame_n of_o mind_n be_v to_o endure_v affliction_n patient_o which_o not_o only_o alleviate_v the_o present_a misery_n but_o prevent_v future_a trouble_n but_o what_o do_v you_o by_o impatience_n but_o add_v impiety_n the_o great_a of_o evil_n to_o your_o other_o labour_n and_o render_v your_o grief_n more_o pungent_a by_o think_v that_o you_o suffer_v undeserved_o will_v not_o he_o that_o be_v sick_a be_v much_o more_o so_o if_o he_o vex_v and_o pine_v at_o his_o sickness_n we_o shall_v not_o therefore_o fret_v at_o the_o recompense_n of_o our_o desert_n lest_o by_o our_o ill_a deportment_n under_o the_o present_a calamity_n we_o contract_v a_o habit_n of_o a_o worse_o and_o this_o also_o be_v worth_a consider_v that_o if_o any_o one_o who_o be_v fall_v into_o poverty_n bear_v it_o meek_o beside_o the_o abatement_n of_o his_o grief_n by_o it_o he_o shall_v find_v some_o other_o solace_n and_o relief_n partly_o because_o his_o own_o discretion_n be_v not_o disturb_v with_o grief_n will_v be_v the_o more_o able_a and_o expedite_a to_o procure_v he_o convenient_a maintenance_n and_o partly_o because_o his_o neighbour_n admire_v his_o prudence_n and_o courage_n will_v supply_v he_o as_o far_o as_o they_o can_v with_o thing_n necessary_a to_o life_n whereas_o the_o impatient_a and_o womanly_a peevish_a man_n in_o the_o first_o place_n contribute_v to_o his_o own_o misery_n and_o then_o be_v bind_v up_o and_o as_o it_o be_v benumb_v with_o grief_n for_o his_o poverty_n he_o become_v altogether_o unapt_a either_o to_o help_v himself_o or_o to_o be_v relieve_v by_o the_o contribution_n of_o his_o neighbour_n and_o if_o any_o throw_v he_o something_o by_o way_n of_o alm_n that_o aggravate_v his_o discontent_n as_o a_o exprobration_n of_o his_o poverty_n
