in_o the_o soul_n he_o say_v it_o contradict_v what_o i_o lay_v down_o before_o viz._n that_o the_o light_n â—oes_v not_o always_o operate_v upon_o the_o understanding_n etc._n etc._n i_o never_o say_v before_o it_o do_v i_o only_o oppose_v his_o notion_n as_o not_o safe_a viz._n that_o the_o light_n be_v always_o present_a with_o his_o understanding_n and_o intimate_o unite_v with_o it_o object_v that_o this_o necessary_o employ_v its_o actual_a operation_n upon_o the_o understanding_n which_o to_o say_v as_o i_o do_v the_o light_n be_v always_o in_o some_o degree_n and_o measure_n present_a in_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o so_o imply_v nor_o necessary_o infer_v its_o actual_a operation_n therein_o at_o all_o time_n therefore_o his_o consequence_n on_o i_o vanish_v and_o his_o own_o assertion_n viz._n that_o his_o light_n be_v always_o present_a to_o his_o understanding_n and_o intimate_o unite_v with_o it_o and_o yet_o that_o it_o do_v not_o formal_o enlighten_v or_o instruct_v it_o but_o when_o attend_v to_o and_o consult_v carry_v a_o contradiction_n in_o itself_o beside_o i_o show_v how_o he_o mistake_v the_o nature_n of_o intimate_a union_n which_o he_o place_n in_o the_o understanding_n whilst_o it_o be_v in_o the_o dark_a and_o void_a of_o actual_a illumination_n or_o attend_v to_o and_o consult_v the_o divine_a light_n consequent_o without_o partake_v of_o its_o nature_n and_o influence_n which_o as_o i_o say_v be_v the_o reason_n and_o manner_n of_o its_o union_n whence_o i_o conclude_v in_o opposition_n to_o his_o notion_n of_o intimate_a union_n that_o if_o the_o understanding_n be_v not_o enlighten_v and_o instruct_v but_o when_o it_o attend_v to_o and_o consult_v the_o divine_a light_n then_o sure_o it_o can_v be_v intimate_o unite_v unto_o the_o divine_a light_n until_o it_o have_v so_o do_v for_o till_o then_o according_a to_o he_o the_o understanding_n must_v be_v altogether_o in_o darkness_n and_o what_o fellowship_n or_o union_n have_v light_a with_o darkness_n or_o christ_n with_o belial_n the_o next_o thing_n j._n n._n object_n to_o be_v that_o those_o text_n of_o scripture_n which_o he_o say_v i_o insist_v upon_o to_o of_o quaker_n and_o either_o way_n as_o general_o apply_v be_v a_o abuse_n for_o as_o it_o be_v general_a it_o be_v most_o certain_o false_a and_o injurious_a and_o bespeak_v he_o to_o be_v at_o a_o loss_n and_o drive_v to_o a_o pinch_n to_o use_v his_o wit_n or_o as_o we_o use_v to_o say_v when_o man_n be_v sink_v to_o catch_v at_o any_o thing_n but_o be_v he_o so_o weak_a as_o to_o think_v holy_a scripture_n rom._n 5.15.18_o tit._n 2.11_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n which_o bring_v salvation_n have_v appear_v into_o all_o man_n etc._n etc._n but_o have_v j._n n._n forget_v 46._o that_o he_o make_v his_o light_n to_o be_v grace_n
this_o quotation_n which_o make_v express_o against_o his_o 1_o sy_n position_n viz._n that_o according_a to_o the_o quaker_n all_o be_v not_o actual_o enlighten_v wherefore_o though_o i_o make_v say_v and_o be_v off_o from_o the_o point_n in_o question_n viz._n that_o all_o be_v actual_o enlighten_v by_o it_o at_o some_o time_n i_o have_v consider_v this_o matter_n and_o apprehend_v it_o may_v be_v resolve_v into_o this_o distinction_n viz._n the_o different_a estate_n or_o attainment_n of_o such_o as_o be_v illuminate_v and_o convert_v some_o whereof_o may_v arrive_v to_o such_o a_o degree_n of_o habitual_a union_n and_o inhabitation_n in_o the_o light_n as_o to_o go_v no_o more_o forth_o but_o continue_v and_o abide_v in_o their_o heavenly_a capacity_n the_o divine_a influence_n make_v to_o experience_n some_o degree_n of_o the_o actual_a illumination_n of_o the_o divine_a light_n by_o which_o it_o be_v manifest_a that_o r._n b._n here_o be_v not_o treat_v of_o a_o subject_n and_o divide_v the_o
