A87192 Londons charity inlarged, stilling the orphans cry. By the liberality of the Parliament, in granting two houses by Act, and giving a thousand pound towards the work for the imployment of the poor, and education of poor children, who many of them are destroyed in their youth for want of being under a good government and education, whereby they may be made serviceable for God, and the Commonwealth. Also this good work is much encouraged by the liberall contributions of many well-affected citizens of London, for the better carrying it on for the glory of God, the honor of the nation, and comfort of the helples poor. With a platform, how many officers needfull to govern 100 children in a work-house, with laws and orders for the schoolmaster to read to the children once a day for a time, afterwards twice a month, whereby they may be kept under a godly and civill government, to the great joy of good peopl. With other observations worthy the reading. / By S.H. a well-wisher to the nations prosperity, and the poors comfort. be_v set_v on_o foot_n and_o carry_v on_o for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o poor_a as_o well_o for_o their_o soul_n as_o their_o body_n as_o be_v never_o so_o exact_o perform_v in_o former_a age_n in_o our_o nation_n the_o work_n of_o the_o poor_a consist_v in_o two_o thing_n viz._n comfort_n the_o honest_a helpless_a poor_a reform_a the_o obstinate_a ungodly_a poor_a and_o for_o your_o ground_n and_o authority_n to_o carry_v you_o on_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o good_a work_n you_o have_v 1_o the_o law_n and_o command_n of_o our_o god_n 2_o the_o law_n of_o our_o land_n and_o the_o assistance_n of_o parliament_n if_o you_o need_v 1_o the_o law_n of_o god_n say_v he_o that_o will_v not_o work_v let_v he_o not_o eat_v this_o will_v be_v a_o sore_a scourge_n and_o smart_a whip_n for_o idle_a person_n if_o god_n law_n be_v so_o execute_v that_o none_o shall_v be_v suffer_v to_o eat_v till_o they_o have_v wrought_v for_o it_o if_o they_o be_v able_a this_o will_v torment_v such_o person_n both_o back_n and_o belly_n more_o than_o ten_o lash_n a_o day_n and_o such_o a_o restraint_n from_o victual_n will_v in_o time_n drive_v they_o to_o work_n whether_o they_o will_v or_o no_o though_o never_o so_o stubborn_a for_o if_o such_o shall_v be_v make_v to_o fast_v that_o will_v not_o work_v one_o or_o two_o day_n before_o they_o eat_v they_o will_v be_v glad_a to_o fall_v to_o he_o or_o her_o labour_n the_o three_o day_n for_o hunger_n will_v tame_v the_o wild_a colt_n and_o constrain_v he_o to_o come_v to_o hand_n for_o hey_n or_o straw_n 2_o the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n say_v he_o that_o be_v idle_a and_o may_v work_v and_o will_v not_o let_v such_o be_v send_v to_o the_o house_n of_o correction_n and_o there_o be_v employ_v and_o restrain_v from_o a_o beg_a idle_a life_n there_o be_v other_o good_a law_n make_v against_o incorrigible_a rogue_n which_o i_o will_v omit_v to_o speak_v of_o desire_v those_o that_o will_v know_v more_o of_o they_o to_o search_v the_o statute_n of_o england_n which_o be_v very_o good_a in_o suppress_v the_o idle_a and_o relieve_v the_o needy_a only_o if_o one_o thing_n may_v be_v add_v that_o no_o lusty_a person_n shall_v have_v the_o benefit_n of_o a_o pass_n if_o he_o live_v above_o thirty_o mile_n from_o london_n the_o reason_n why_o i_o speak_v of_o the_o distance_n of_o thirty_o mile_n it_o be_v because_o the_o carrier_n come_v two_o or_o three_o time_n a_o week_n and_o a_o letter_n from_o the_o corporation_n to_o the_o parish_n and_o the_o say_a carrier_n that_o dwell_v near_a to_o the_o parish_n to_o carry_v it_o and_o the_o porter_n that_o be_v servant_n to_o the_o carrier_n to_o carry_v the_o say_a letter_n to_o the_o parish_n where_o the_o beggar_n say_v he_o be_v bear_v or_o last_o dwell_v and_o he_o to_o deliver_v it_o to_o the_o constable_n or_o collector_n for_o the_o poor_a and_o they_o without_o delay_n upon_o a_o penalty_n to_o return_v answer_n by_o the_o first_o or_o second_o return_n of_o the_o carrier_n and_o their_o hand_n with_o the_o hand_n either_o of_o a_o justice_n or_o minister_n of_o the_o parish_n of_o the_o truth_n whether_o ever_o any_o such_o person_n be_v bear_v there_o or_o inhabit_v among_o they_o by_o this_o mean_n you_o will_v soon_o discover_v much_o falsehood_n among_o beggar_n and_o much_o carelessness_n among_o constable_n in_o not_o guide_v home_o the_o beggar_n to_o their_o parish_n a_o penalty_n on_o they_o will_v make_v they_o be_v careful_a therefore_o if_o the_o corporation_n do_v intend_v to_o do_v the_o work_n true_o faithful_o and_o with_o advantage_n to_o the_o commonwealth_n they_o must_v neither_o take_v the_o word_n of_o a_o wander_a beggar_n nor_o the_o true_a service_n of_o a_o careless_a constable_n for_o they_o be_v both_o ill_a member_n to_o a_o well-governed_a commonwealth_n and_o will_v deceive_v therefore_o two_o letter_n from_o the_o corporation_n to_o the_o parish_n where_o the_o beggar_n say_v he_o be_v bear_v or_o last_o abode_n will_v be_v very_o necessary_a viz._n one_o to_o know_v the_o truth_n whether_o ever_o any_o such_o person_n belong_v to_o they_o by_o this_o mean_n you_o shall_v have_v a_o true_a account_n whether_o the_o beggar_n report_v be_v true_a the_o other_o letter_n be_v when_o the_o beggar_n be_v send_v away_o with_o the_o pass_n to_o know_v whether_o he_o be_v come_v to_o his_o parish_n if_o not_o you_o shall_v be_v sure_a then_o to_o know_v what_o constable_n be_v in_o the_o fault_n that_o the_o beggar_n be_v not_o conduct_v to_o his_o parish_n such_o constable_n be_v fine_v will_v make_v other_o beware_v this_o will_v be_v little_a charge_n to_o the_o corporation_n and_o your_o work_n do_v very_o judicious_o with_o care_n and_o prudence_n for_o some_o beggar_n may_v commit_v some_o misdemeanour_n in_o their_o country_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o simple_a thing_n to_o take_v their_o word_n for_o they_o will_v never_o tell_v truth_n as_o for_o example_n suppose_v a_o constable_n of_o london_n shall_v take_v up_o a_o beggar_n in_o his_o precinct_n or_o parish_n and_o shall_v ask_v he_o where_o he_o be_v bear_v or_o last_o dwell_v the_o beggar_n shall_v say_v at_o york_n or_o newcastle_n when_o as_o peradventure_o he_o be_v neither_o bear_v nor_o inhabit_v in_o any_o of_o the_o foresay_a city_n and_o it_o may_v be_v he_o be_v never_o in_o that_o country_n in_o all_o his_o life_n yet_o upon_o the_o bare_a word_n of_o the_o beggar_n the_o constable_n make_v his_o pass_n correct_v he_o and_o send_v he_o away_o to_o the_o place_n of_o his_o birth_n or_o last_o abode_n as_o he_o say_v and_o when_o he_o come_v thither_o the_o inhabitant_n there_o will_v own_v no_o such_o person_n and_o so_o he_o must_v be_v bring_v back_o again_o to_o the_o great_a trouble_n of_o the_o country_n according_a to_o this_o i_o will_v give_v you_o a_o precedent_n a_o gentleman_n who_o be_v now_o one_o of_o the_o corporation_n be_v constable_n a_o lusty_a beggar_n be_v beg_v in_o his_o parish_n he_o ask_v he_o where_o he_o be_v bear_v he_o say_v at_o dover_n he_o cause_v the_o beadle_n to_o whip_v he_o and_o make_v he_o his_o pass_n and_o send_v he_o for_o dover_n when_o he_o come_v thither_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o dover_n will_v not_o receive_v he_o they_o have_v none_o such_o bear_v there_o they_o send_v he_o back_o again_o to_o london_n from_o whence_o he_o be_v send_v

for_o the_o better_a relief_n of_o the_o poor_a it_o be_v well_o observe_v of_o one_o who_o say_v that_o england_n have_v many_o hundred_o of_o acre_n of_o waft_a and_o barren_a land_n and_o many_o
