high_o concern_v you_o as_o i_o have_v show_v so_o to_o behave_v yourself_o in_o the_o public_a worship_n of_o god_n that_o you_o may_v offer_v up_o to_o he_o such_o a_o reasonable_a service_n as_o he_o will_v be_v please_v to_o accept_v of_o through_o the_o merit_n and_o meditation_n of_o his_o belove_a son_n yet_o i_o must_v withal_o tell_v you_o that_o you_o must_v have_v a_o care_n of_o limit_v your_o devotion_n to_o the_o temple_n you_o must_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o to_o seem_v very_o serious_a there_o if_o at_o other_o time_n you_o be_v vain_a and_o wicked_a if_o you_o desire_v that_o both_o your_o person_n and_o your_o performance_n shall_v be_v accept_v of_o god_n you_o must_v be_v true_o religious_a at_o all_o time_n and_o the_o zeal_n which_o you_o pretend_v to_o have_v for_o god_n glory_n must_v be_v visible_a through_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o your_o life_n and_o conversation_n be_v persuade_v therefore_o to_o remember_v your_o creator_n in_o the_o day_n of_o your_o youth_n have_v a_o care_n of_o think_v as_o too_o many_o do_v that_o you_o have_v still_o time_n enough_o to_o prepare_v yourself_o for_o another_o world_n for_o there_o be_v no_o be_v like_a how_o merciful_a god_n have_v deal_v with_o his_o father_n he_o presume_v upon_o the_o like_a forbearance_n and_o mercy_n think_v that_o as_o his_o father_n have_v do_v before_o so_o he_o may_v redeem_v the_o offence_n of_o his_o youth_n by_o a_o late_a repentance_n in_o old_a age_n but_o we_o find_v that_o god_n be_v not_o please_v to_o accept_v of_o amon_n assignment_n and_o therefore_o though_o he_o have_v spare_v manasses_n the_o father_n forty_o year_n yet_o he_o cut_v off_o his_o son_n at_o the_o end_n of_o the_o second_o year_n of_o his_o wicked_a reign_n know_v therefore_o and_o consider_v this_o that_o it_o be_v good_a for_o you_o to_o bear_v the_o yoke_n of_o religion_n in_o your_o youth_n if_o you_o habituate_v yourself_o to_o the_o practice_n of_o holiness_n in_o the_o prime_n of_o your_o year_n you_o will_v afterward_o find_v all_o even_o the_o severe_a duty_n of_o christianity_n to_o sit_v wonderful_a easy_a upon_o your_o mind_n if_o you_o service_n of_o god_n in_o their_o youth_n and_o enslave_v themselves_o to_o the_o world_n the_o flesh_n and_o the_o devil_n it_o be_v observable_a that_o john_n the_o evangelist_n be_v call_v the_o disciple_n who_o jesus_n love_v it_o be_v not_o say_v indeed_o for_o what_o reason_n this_o title_n be_v give_v he_o above_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o twelve_o apostle_n but_o it_o be_v suppose_v that_o he_o be_v â—he_v young_a of_o they_o all_o for_o that_o reason_n possible_o jesus_n may_v have_v the_o great_a love_n for_o he_o because_o even_o then_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o youth_n he_o church_n than_o their_o be_v dissatisfy_v about_o this_o matter_n i_o have_v here_o think_v fit_a to_o add_v something_o in_o reference_n hereunto_o hope_v thereby_o to_o remove_v the_o scruple_n at_o least_o of_o those_o who_o be_v unprejudiced_a and_o well_o mean_v person_n in_o order_n to_o this_o end_n i_o shall_v show_v you_o one_a what_o be_v mean_v by_o godfather_n and_o godmother_n 2d_o what_o reason_n our_o church_n have_v to_o justify_v the_o use_n of_o they_o 3d._n how_o advantageous_a the_o due_a execution_n of_o this_o office_n may_v be_v both_o to_o surety_n and_o child_n first_o as_o to_o the_o meaning_n of_o godfather_n and_o godmother_n our_o church_n hereby_o understand_v those_o person_n who_o be_v engage_v as_o surety_n to_o the_o church_n by_o solemn_a promise_n at_o the_o baptism_n of_o child_n to_o see_v they_o virtuous_o bring_v up_o to_o lead_v a_o godly_a and_o a_o christian_a life_n so_o that_o although_o the_o christian_a church_n for_o thâ—t_a reason_n have_v think_v fit_a to_o call_v they_o surety_n yet_o to_o let_v they_o know_v how_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v affect_v towards_o their_o child_n in_o who_o name_n they_o covenant_n with_o god_n viz._n that_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v as_o father_n and_o mother_n in_o god_n i_o e._n spiritual_a parent_n and_o affectionate_o concern_v in_o the_o furtherance_n of_o their_o child_n salvation_n therefore_o they_o be_v call_v godfather_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o way_n of_o express_v themselves_o in_o this_o matter_n we_o may_v suppose_v the_o ancient_a christian_n at_o first_o receive_v from_o some_o expression_n in_o scripture_n of_o the_o like_a nature_n as_o when_o all_o true_a believer_n be_v say_v to_o be_v brethren_n in_o christ_n and_o therefore_o be_v call_v christian_n as_o also_o from_o st._n paul_n way_n of_o speak_v concern_v those_o person_n in_o who_o education_n and_o in_o the_o furtherance_n of_o who_o salvation_n he_o have_v be_v concern_v for_o as_o he_o signify_v to_o the_o corinthian_n 1_o ep._n 4._o 15._o that_o he_o be_v their_o spiritual_a father_n have_v beget_v they_o in_o christ_n jesus_n through_o the_o gospel_n so_o 1_o tim._n 1._o 2._o he_o call_v timothy_n his_o own_o son_n in_o the_o faith_n in_o this_o sense_n also_o he_o call_v onesimus_n his_o son_n ep_v to_o philem_n v._n 10._o i_o beseech_v thou_o for_o my_o son_n onesimus_n who_o i_o have_v beget_v in_o my_o bound_n now_o as_o st_n paul_n be_v father_n to_o the_o corinthian_n and_o as_o timothy_n and_o onesimus_n be_v his_o son_n in_o a_o spiritual_a sense_n so_o why_o may_v not_o those_o person_n who_o undertake_v the_o office_n of_o surety_n for_o child_n when_o they_o bring_v they_o to_o baptism_n which_o be_v their_o new_a and_o spiritual_a birth_n be_v call_v spiritual_a parent_n or_o godfather_n and_o godmother_n especial_o when_o they_o be_v as_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v and_o as_o they_o may_v
and_o final_o can_v they_o do_v what_o in_o they_o lie_v to_o have_v he_o confirm_v and_o so_o to_o discharge_v they_o by_o take_v the_o obligation_n upon_o himself_o sure_o there_o be_v nothing_o of_o impossibility_n in_o any_o of_o these_o thing_n and_o yet_o these_o be_v the_o chief_a thing_n that_o be_v give_v in_o charge_n to_o the_o surety_n but_o 3._o say_v some_o why_o shall_v not_o the_o parent_n rather_o than_o other_o be_v oblige_v to_o undertake_v these_o thing_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o parent_n be_v already_o oblige_v both_o by_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o nature_n to_o take_v care_n of_o their_o child_n soul_n and_o body_n and_o there_o can_v be_v no_o great_a obligation_n lay_v upon_o they_o by_o require_v a_o solemn_a promise_n from_o they_o and_o therefore_o as_o a_o reverend_n and_o learned_a bishop_n of_o our_o church_n observe_v the_o church_n intention_n in_o have_v surety_n be_v not_o to_o supercede_v the_o obligation_n of_o parent_n but_o to_o superinduce_v a_o far_a obligation_n upon_o other_o for_o great_a security_n of_o performance_n or_o as_o another_o have_v express_v it_o the_o church_n think_v fit_a to_o lay_v the_o charge_n upon_o other_o not_o to_o exclude_v or_o excuse_v the_o parent_n care_v but_o to_o be_v join_v with_o they_o in_o the_o more_o certain_a and_o easy_a accomplishment_n of_o so_o pious_a a_o work_n but_o 4._o say_v some_o how_o can_v surety_n declare_v in_o the_o child_n name_n that_o he_o do_v renounce_v the_o devil_n and_o all_o his_o work_n etc._n etc._n and_o that_o he_o do_v believe_v in_o god_n or_o how_o can_v they_o promise_v that_o the_o child_n shall_v serve_v he_o since_o we_o find_v it_o so_o hard_a a_o matter_n to_o do_v these_o thing_n ourselves_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v in_o the_o first_o place_n that_o these_o word_n of_o the_o baptismal_a vow_n be_v not_o direct_o word_n of_o promise_n oblige_v the_o surety_n to_o performance_n but_o expression_n of_o contract_n relate_v to_o the_o infant_n and_o declare_v to_o what_o duty_n he_o be_v oblige_v by_o his_o baptism_n which_o be_v no_o other_o than_o what_o every_o one_o of_o we_o ought_v to_o do_v as_o i_o have_v already_o show_v who_o expect_v to_o be_v save_v in_o the_o second_o place_n it_o be_v indeed_o more_o than_o we_o know_v whether_o the_o child_n when_o he_o come_v to_o year_n of_o discretion_n will_v perform_v those_o thing_n which_o at_o his_o baptism_n be_v promise_v in_o his_o name_n but_o then_o do_v not_o the_o same_o objection_n lie_v against_o those_o who_o oppose_v we_o in_o this_o matter_n for_o be_v it_o not_o altogether_o as_o uncertain_a whether_o those_o parent_n who_o as_o they_o be_v enjoin_v by_o the_o presbyterian_a directory_n shall_v solemn_o promise_v to_o bring_v up_o their_o child_n in_o the_o ground_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n and_o in_o the_o nurture_n and_o admonition_n of_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v able_a to_o do_v it_o who_o know_v whether_o the_o incapacity_n or_o perverseness_n and_o obstinacy_n of_o the_o child_n admit_v that_o the_o parent_n be_v careful_a in_o the_o matter_n may_v not_o hinder_v the_o performance_n of_o their_o promise_n yea_o be_v it_o not_o altogether_o as_o uncertain_a whether_o those_o person_n who_o be_v not_o dip_v till_o they_o come_v to_o ripeness_n of_o year_n will_v conscientious_o observe_v and_o keep_v the_o covenant_n which_o they_o make_v then_o with_o god_n after_o their_o way_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o this_o uncertainty_n on_o all_o hand_n it_o be_v fit_a all_o party_n shall_v promise_v those_o thing_n which_o it_o be_v their_o duty_n to_o perform_v however_o we_o have_v the_o great_a encouragement_n to_o hope_v for_o the_o child_n well-doing_n because_o as_o the_o prayer_n of_o the_o church_n be_v put_v up_o unto_o god_n in_o his_o behalf_n that_o he_o may_v have_v power_n and_o strength_n to_o have_v victory_n and_o to_o triumph_v against_o the_o devil_n the_o world_n and_o the_o flesh_n so_o we_o have_v god_n promise_n that_o he_o will_v grant_v those_o thing_n which_o we_o ask_v faithful_o at_o his_o hand_n and_o therefore_o by_o the_o way_n this_o consideration_n shall_v oblige_v all_o people_n who_o be_v present_a at_o the_o ministration_n of_o baptism_n to_o put_v up_o their_o hearty_a prayer_n to_o god_n in_o behalf_n of_o those_o who_o be_v baptize_v and_o not_o to_o sit_v down_o or_o stand_v gaze_v about_o as_o if_o they_o be_v no_o way_n concern_v therein_o the_o prayer_n of_o the_o church_n therefore_o be_v put_v up_o to_o god_n in_o the_o child_n behalf_n and_o god_n have_v promise_v to_o hear_v our_o prayer_n if_o afterward_o the_o surety_n take_v care_n as_o they_o may_v do_v if_o they_o will_v when_o the_o child_n be_v come_v to_o year_n of_o discretion_n to_o let_v he_o know_v what_o they_o have_v promise_v for_o he_o and_o persuade_v he_o the_o best_a they_o can_v to_o be_v mindful_a thereof_o they_o have_v do_v their_o duty_n and_o they_o may_v reasonable_o expect_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n upon_o their_o endeavour_n but_o 5._o say_v some_o why_o shall_v any_o person_n be_v desire_v to_o take_v this_o charge_n upon_o they_o since_o it_o very_o often_o fall_v out_o that_o either_o the_o surety_n be_v remove_v at_o a_o great_a distance_n from_o the_o child_n or_o the_o child_n from_o they_o before_o they_o be_v capable_a of_o be_v instruct_v as_o they_o shall_v be_v so_o that_o the_o duty_n can_v possible_o be_v discharge_v according_a to_o promise_v to_o which_o i_o answer_v that_o it_o be_v very_o certain_a these_o thing_n may_v and_o do_v happen_v very_o often_o and_o therefore_o all_o parent_n will_v do_v well_o to_o make_v choice_n of_o such_o surety_n as_o be_v inhabitant_n and_o not_o stranger_n or_o servant_n and_o such_o as_o have_v no_o settle_a place_n of_o abode_n unless_o they_o be_v know_v to_o be_v person_n religious_o incline_v who_o may_v take_v care_n though_o they_o live_v at_o some_o distance_n to_o discharge_v their_o duty_n but_o suppose_v that_o the_o circumstance_n of_o either_o party_n shall_v be_v such_o that_o there_o be_v a_o unavoidable_a necessity_n of_o remove_v from_o one_o another_o and_o that_o the_o thing_n can_v be_v do_v so_o well_o as_o if_o they_o continue_v still_o in_o the_o same_o neighbourhood_n the_o surety_n be_v in_o such_o a_o case_n discharge_v from_o so_o much_o of_o their_o duty_n as_o they_o can_v possible_o perform_v but_o then_o they_o shall_v be_v mindful_a of_o such_o child_n in_o their_o private_a devotion_n beseech_v god_n to_o direct_v they_o by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n in_o the_o way_n of_o truth_n and_o righteousness_n and_o to_o grant_v unto_o they_o mind_n capable_a of_o receive_v such_o good_a instruction_n as_o may_v be_v tender_v unto_o they_o that_o if_o he_o will_v season_v their_o heart_n with_o grace_n and_o that_o he_o shall_v please_v to_o prolong_v their_o day_n here_o upon_o earth_n they_o may_v live_v to_o he_o and_o be_v instrument_n of_o his_o glory_n by_o serve_v he_o faithful_o and_o do_v good_a in_o their_o generation_n this_o supposition_n therefore_o of_o a_o removal_n on_o either_o side_n be_v of_o no_o more_o force_n against_o surety_n than_o that_o of_o their_o death_n which_o may_v happen_v in_o a_o little_a time_n after_o the_o child_n be_v baptize_v for_o in_o all_o such_o case_n of_o uncertainty_n we_o ought_v to_o do_v our_o duty_n and_o leave_v the_o issue_n to_o the_o alwise_a disposer_n of_o all_o thing_n thus_o we_o act_v in_o leave_v our_o
