be_v in_o this_o religious_a state_n unless_o he_o vow_v obedience_n to_o another_o kind_n of_o spiritual_a jurisdiction_n so_o that_o it_o be_v neither_o the_o live_n so_o strict_o nor_o vow_v to_o live_v strict_o as_o the_o most_o severe_a monk_n but_o it_o be_v their_o be_v of_o a_o particular_a order_n and_o live_v under_o such_o and_o such_o rule_n that_o be_v so_o meritorious_a so_o that_o by_o monkery_n indeed_o monkery_n be_v encourage_v and_o some_o politic_a and_o secular_a design_n answer_v but_o the_o advancement_n of_o piety_n and_o devotion_n be_v not_o principal_o design_v or_o but_o i_o must_v needs_o say_v that_o there_o be_v little_a of_o true_a devotion_n that_o i_o can_v discover_v in_o any_o of_o these_o first_o their_o be_v shut_v up_o from_o the_o world_n or_o live_v other_o sin_n of_o as_o high_a a_o nature_n as_o those_o which_o by_o be_v shut_v up_o from_o the_o world_n he_o pretend_v to_o avoid_v and_o yet_o such_o as_o these_o be_v general_o legible_a and_o observable_a in_o the_o very_a look_n conversation_n and_o carriage_n of_o monk_n and_o hermit_n indeed_o retiredness_n sometime_o be_v a_o excellent_a help_n to_o the_o mind_n by_o give_v it_o time_n for_o the_o mind_n will_v natural_o be_v as_o much_o tire_v with_o solitude_n as_o with_o business_n beside_o that_o the_o devil_n be_v always_o most_o busy_a when_o man_n be_v idle_a and_o diversion_n and_o recreation_n be_v as_o necessary_a to_o most_o temper_n as_o health_n and_o cheerfulness_n be_v and_o fit_v a_o man_n even_o for_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n for_o the_o keep_n the_o mind_n in_o a_o constant_a bent_n though_o of_o devotion_n will_v in_o a_o short_a time_n weaken_v its_o spring_n and_o dull_v its_o edge_n and_o the_o act_n of_o devotion_n in_o such_o a_o mind_n will_n it_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v be_v rather_o a_o formal_a piece_n of_o drudgery_n than_o a_o reasonable_a service_n and_o though_o we_o shall_v grant_v that_o by_o be_v confine_v to_o a_o monastery_n a_o man_n may_v better_o escape_v the_o defilement_n of_o any_o kind_n of_o sin_n yet_o it_o must_v be_v grant_v that_o he_o can_v be_v in_o so_o much_o capacity_n of_o do_v good_a in_o of_o live_v be_v very_o improper_a and_o the_o abuse_n that_o be_v make_v of_o it_o in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n be_v plain_o intolerable_a where_o man_n be_v teach_v to_o place_n religion_n in_o a_o certain_a way_n and_o trade_n of_o life_n rather_o than_o in_o a_o true_o christian_a conversation_n it_o strike_v at_o the_o very_a foundation_n of_o our_o religion_n for_o man_n to_o be_v make_v to_o believe_v that_o the_o live_n or_o die_v in_o the_o habit_n of_o this_o or_o that_o severe_a order_n of_o monk_n will_v have_v a_o influence_n on_o the_o soul_n and_o give_v it_o a_o better_a their_o christian_a liberty_n to_o the_o restraint_n of_o themselves_o by_o a_o voluntary_a self-denial_n as_o far_o as_o they_o find_v it_o necessary_a or_o expedient_a but_o for_o this_o to_o be_v what_o temptation_n they_o may_v have_v or_o how_o they_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o bear_v and_o withstand_v they_o and_o yet_o if_o they_o have_v but_o once_o though_o of_o a_o sudden_a through_o their_o own_o melancholy_a or_o the_o insinuation_n of_o other_o take_v the_o vow_n on_o themselves_o there_o be_v ordinary_o not_o revoke_v or_o draw_v back_o for_o ever_o it_o be_v very_o cruel_a and_o taper_n to_o the_o image_n or_o saint_n of_o the_o town_n in_o which_o we_o live_v we_o by_o so_o bestow_v our_o charity_n both_o honour_n god_n and_o do_v good_a to_o men._n they_o do_v neither_o but_o do_v homage_n to_o a_o saint_n that_o neither_o know_v they_o nor_o receive_v any_o good_a by_o the_o honour_n which_o they_o give_v they_o it_o be_v indeed_o confess_v that_o our_o church_n be_v not_o so_o adorn_v as_o they_o ought_v sometime_o but_o that_o be_v no_o fault_n of_o our_o church_n but_o of_o the_o iniquity_n of_o the_o time_n and_o of_o those_o dissension_n which_o
