own_o or_o which_o be_v the_o devil_n be_v as_o for_o those_o that_o be_v the_o immediate_a result_n of_o the_o heart_n the_o devil_n be_v very_o quick_a and_o ready_a to_o improve_v they_o and_o for_o these_o which_o be_v the_o devil_n injection_n our_o corrupt_a heart_n be_v too_o willing_a to_o comply_v with_o they_o so_o that_o we_o must_v think_v ourselves_o equal_o oblige_v to_o guard_v also_o let_v we_o be_v careful_a to_o watch_v over_o our_o thought_n on_o the_o lordsday_n than_o more_o especial_o than_o at_o other_o time_n the_o lordsday_n be_v i_o know_v not_o by_o what_o mean_n extreme_o slight_v and_o disregard_v and_o under_o a_o pretence_n of_o christian_a liberty_n profaneness_n have_v very_o great_o advance_v itself_o so_o that_o god_n own_o day_n be_v become_v almost_o as_o one_o of_o we_o and_o but_o a_o very_a small_a difference_n observe_v betwixt_o they_o man_n be_v general_o so_o far_o from_o be_v most_o careful_a of_o their_o thought_n on_o that_o holiday_n that_o they_o suffer_v they_o to_o be_v most_o profuse_a and_o extravagant_a then_o and_o not_o only_o their_o thought_n but_o their_o action_n too_o be_v for_o a_o great_a part_n worse_o than_o at_o other_o time_n which_o as_o it_o be_v a_o very_a great_a sin_n in_o itself_o and_o such_o as_o shall_v be_v severe_o account_v for_o so_o it_o be_v a_o great_a mean_n of_o make_v our_o thought_n loose_v ungovernable_a and_o wicked_a at_o other_o time_n for_o that_o as_o it_o be_v a_o day_n peculiarly_a to_o be_v dedicate_v to_o god_n so_o it_o be_v a_o day_n wherein_o god_n design_n in_o a_o more_o eminent_a manner_n to_o communicate_v himself_o and_o his_o grace_n to_o our_o soul_n and_o therefore_o if_o we_o do_v sanctify_v it_o as_o we_o ought_v by_o have_v a_o strict_a watch_n over_o our_o thought_n and_o by_o the_o delightful_a exercise_n of_o prayer_n praise_n and_o mediditation_n and_o a_o devout_a read_n and_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n it_o will_v by_o god_n blessing_n leave_v such_o a_o happy_a tincture_n on_o we_o and_o so_o pious_o and_o last_o incline_v the_o mind_n to_o good_a that_o it_o will_v be_v a_o excellent_a mean_n to_o order_v
to_o make_v our_o thought_n of_o god_n vile_a and_o blasphemous_a the_o truth_n of_o this_o abundant_o appear_v from_o the_o various_a and_o monstrous_a idolatry_n of_o the_o gentile_a world_n and_o the_o gross_a and_o horrid_a conception_n they_o have_v of_o their_o deity_n and_o also_o from_o the_o idolatry_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n and_o that_o gross_a and_o carnal_a way_n of_o worship_n among_o they_o use_v especial_o in_o the_o dark_a age_n of_o popery_n when_o it_o be_v almost_o incredible_a to_o tell_v what_o absurdity_n and_o profaneness_n be_v the_o consequence_n of_o their_o ignorance_n nay_o it_o must_v be_v acknowledge_v that_o even_o among_o ourselves_o some_o have_v not_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n i_o speak_v this_o to_o your_o shame_n and_o until_o they_o have_v until_o they_o do_v attain_v to_o know_v he_o in_o some_o measure_n it_o can_v be_v imagine_v that_o their_o thought_n of_o he_o shall_v be_v rectify_v the_o more_o we_o know_v god_n the_o more_o we_o come_v to_o love_v he_o to_o be_v transport_v with_o he_o and_o to_o have_v the_o most_o high_a and_o noble_a thought_n of_o he_o now_o this_o excellent_a and_o useful_a and_o desirable_a knowledge_n of_o god_n be_v to_o be_v obtain_v these_o two_o way_n by_o his_o work_n and_o by_o his_o word_n first_o from_o our_o own_o observation_n of_o the_o stupendous_a frame_n of_o the_o creation_n and_o the_o mighty_a act_n of_o his_o providence_n the_o admirable_a order_n of_o all_o being_n their_o usefulness_n and_o subserviency_n to_o man_n the_o establishment_n of_o kingdom_n and_o empire_n the_o preservation_n and_o government_n of_o his_o church_n both_o his_o judgement_n and_o his_o mercy_n etc._n etc._n these_o thing_n if_o serious_o observe_v and_o consider_v be_v a_o blasphemous_a or_o unworthy_a thought_n of_o he_o and_o as_o we_o may_v come_v to_o know_v god_n by_o our_o own_o attentive_a observation_n of_o the_o great_a work_n of_o his_o creation_n and_o providence_n so_o we_o may_v by_o his_o most_o holy_a word_n and_o indeed_o thence_o alone_o we_o can_v fetch_v our_o true_a idea_n and_o most_o proper_a thought_n of_o god_n the_o scripture_n be_v the_o best_a help_n to_o our_o attain_v the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o wherein_o in_o a_o majestic_a style_n his_o glorious_a attribute_n be_v represent_v to_o we_o his_o goodness_n purity_n power_n he_o think_v fit_a to_o withhold_v his_o divine_a and_o spiritual_a comfort_n from_o our_o soul_n as_o well_o as_o when_o he_o bestow_v they_o upon_o we_o or_o else_o to_o cause_v we_o perhaps_o to_o assure_v of_o this_o that_o that_o which_o be_v a_o man_n burden_n 28._o will_v not_o be_v reckon_v as_o his_o sin_n and_o that_o if_o they_o hate_v these_o thought_n more_o because_o they_o be_v dishonourable_a to_o god_n than_o because_o they_o be_v grievous_a and_o troublesome_a to_o themselves_o and_o be_v by_o mean_n of_o they_o make_v more_o watchful_a circumspect_a and_o devout_a than_o they_o before_o be_v then_o satan_n shall_v answer_v for_o they_o and_o not_o they_o the_o devil_n shall_v be_v judge_v for_o all_o these_o profane_a and_o blasphemous_a thought_n which_o they_o deject_a soul_n be_v so_o much_o afflict_v with_o the_o apprehension_n of_o as_o their_o own_o and_o so_o i_o have_v dispatch_v this_o first_o species_n of_o evil_a thought_n viz._n profane_a and_o more_o danger_n in_o these_o than_o the_o former_a because_o there_o be_v something_o in_o corrupt_a nature_n more_o agreeable_a to_o they_o than_o to_o the_o other_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v apt_a more_o to_o be_v please_v with_o they_o but_o to_o a_o good_a man_n to_o a_o true_a christian_a these_o thought_n be_v no_o less_o disquiet_v and_o hateful_a than_o the_o former_a and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o prescribe_v some_o proper_a remedy_n against_o they_o the_o first_o of_o which_o be_v prayer_n which_o though_o it_o must_v be_v acknowledge_v to_o be_v a_o universal_a remedy_n and_o must_v in_o no_o case_n of_o trial_n be_v pretermit_v for_o if_o any_o man_n lack_v wisdom_n or_o grace_n of_o any_o particular_a kind_n whatsoever_o let_v he_o ask_v it_o of_o god_n say_v st._n james_n who_o give_v to_o all_o man_n liberal_o 5._o and_o upbraid_v not_o yet_o i_o take_v it_o to_o be_v more_o especial_o needful_a here_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v be_v much_o in_o and_o quench_v the_o fire_n of_o concupiscence_n in_o we_o that_o our_o soul_n and_o body_n may_v be_v the_o temple_n of_o god_n we_o must_v imitate_v the_o poor_a leper_n in_o the_o gospel_n 2._o who_o fall_v down_o at_o jesus_n foot_n and_o worship_v he_o say_v lord_n if_o thou_o will_v thou_o can_v make_v i_o clean_a it_o be_v no_o easy_a matter_n to_o subdue_v this_o kind_n of_o evil_a thought_n in_o some_o complexion_n but_o the_o difficulty_n of_o so_o do_v be_v great_a to_o such_o as_o have_v live_v in_o a_o habit_n of_o lust_n and_o uncleanness_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v call_v in_o the_o assistance_n of_o heaven_n by_o constant_a and_o devout_a prayer_n second_o temperance_n and_o fast_v be_v a_o proper_a remedy_n for_o the_o suppress_n of_o this_o kind_n of_o evil_a thought_n while_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o body_n be_v so_o unite_v and_o make_v up_o one_o compositum_fw-la the_o operation_n of_o the_o soul_n will_v be_v great_o incline_v and_o bias_v by_o the_o complexion_n and_o constitution_n of_o the_o body_n and_o therefore_o that_o must_v be_v keep_v in_o due_a order_n and_o subjection_n a_o pamper_n and_o indulge_v the_o flesh_n be_v a_o great_a promoter_n of_o lust_n and_o when_o the_o animal_n spirit_n be_v intoxicate_v the_o soul_n can_v but_o feeble_o exert_v itself_o a_o man_n can_v hardly_o preserve_v himself_o then_o from_o the_o gross_a act_n of_o uncleanness_n much_o less_o from_o impure_a thought_n and_o therefore_o temperance_n and_o self-denial_n be_v always_o necessary_a in_o order_n to_o avoid_v unclean_a thought_n which_o as_o our_o saviour_n say_v of_o the_o unclean_a devil_n 21._o go_v not_o out_o but_o by_o fast_v and_o prayer_n the_o mind_n be_v calm_a and_o serene_a when_o the_o body_n be_v in_o a_o regular_a temper_n a_o man_n be_v fit_a to_o meditate_v and_o think_v on_o god_n and_o heaven_n and_o holy_a thing_n when_o he_o be_v sober_a and_o moderate_a and_o the_o reason_n of_o fasting_n be_v make_v a_o duty_n be_v in_o order_n to_o tame_v the_o insolence_n of_o the_o flesh_n to_o keep_v the_o thought_n pure_a the_o reason_n clear_a and_o to_o make_v we_o more_o fit_a for_o religious_a duty_n upon_o which_o account_n the_o duty_n of_o self-denial_n and_o mortification_n be_v not_o so_o severe_a as_o they_o may_v sometime_o seem_v to_o we_o but_o high_o reasonable_a since_o the_o denial_n of_o the_o gratification_n of_o our_o sensual_a and_o low_a desire_n do_v bring_v satisfaction_n to_o the_o high_a appetite_n of_o the_o soul_n since_o while_o the_o body_n be_v keep_v in_o due_a subjection_n the_o soul_n liberty_n and_o activity_n be_v much_o the_o great_a and_o beside_o heaven_n be_v worth_a strive_v and_o deny_v ourselves_o for_o if_o it_o be_v a_o work_n much_o more_o harsh_a and_o unpleasant_a than_o it_o be_v if_o this_o will_v denominate_v we_o of_o the_o number_n of_o christ_n true_a disciple_n certain_o we_o shall_v not_o stick_v at_o it_o and_o that_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o mortify_v themselves_o and_o keep_v to_o a_o strict_a and_o spare_a diet_n thereby_o to_o bring_v down_o their_o flesh_n and_o make_v their_o body_n pliant_a and_o athletic_a and_o all_o that_o they_o can_v hope_v to_o get_v by_o it_o be_v only_o a_o garland_n of_o flower_n and_o a_o little_a frivolous_a honour_n and_o therefore_o if_o they_o will_v be_v at_o the_o pain_n to_o do_v so_o much_o for_o a_o reward_n not_o worth_a a_o name_n how_o much_o more_o shall_v we_o do_v it_o in_o order_n to_o the_o avoid_v unclean_a thought_n and_o impure_a desire_n which_o will_v not_o only_o hinder_v we_o in_o our_o strive_v for_o heaven_n but_o unqualify_v we_o for_o it_o thus_o the_o apostle_n argue_v every_o one_o that_o strive_v for_o the_o mastery_n be_v temperate_a in_o all_o thing_n etc._n now_o they_o do_v it_o to_o obtain_v a_o corruptible_a crown_n but_o we_o a_o incorruptible_a i_o therefore_o so_o run_v not_o as_o uncertain_o so_o fight_v i_o not_o as_o one_o that_o beat_v the_o air_n but_o i_o keep_v under_o my_o body_n and_o bring_v it_o into_o subjection_n lest_o that_o by_o any_o mean_n when_o i_o have_v preach_v to_o other_o i_o may_v not_o myself_o be_v a_o castaway_n the_o three_o remedy_n against_o unclean_a thought_n be_v the_o consideration_n that_o they_o be_v of_o a_o defile_n nature_n they_o leave_v a_o strange_a pollution_n and_o filth_n behind_o they_o and_o if_o indulge_v very_o strong_o incline_v to_o actual_a uncleanness_n it_o be_v a_o dangerous_a thing_n to_o cherish_v thought_n of_o this_o kind_n to_o delight_v in_o they_o and_o dwell_v upon_o they_o for_o there_o be_v none_o more_o apt_a to_o grow_v usurp_v and_o ungovernable_a by_o entertainment_n than_o these_o they_o do_v moreover_o mighty_o unfit_a we_o for_o holy_a duty_n they_o weaken_v the_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o a_o great_a degree_n and_o therefore_o as_o we_o value_v our_o soul_n as_o we_o esteem_v heaven_n into_o which_o no_o unclean_a thing_n shall_v enter_v let_v we_o labour_n to_o avoid_v they_o and_o this_o consideration_n be_v proper_a in_o order_n thereunto_o four_o keep_v a_o strict_a guard_n over_o all_o our_o sense_n be_v this_o be_v the_o practice_n of_o a_o devout_a person_n come_v i_o pulsat_fw-la aliqua_fw-la turpis_fw-la cogitatio_fw-la statim_fw-la recurro_fw-la ad_fw-la vulnera_fw-la christi_fw-la &_o sanabor_fw-la i.e._n when_o i_o be_o assault_v by_o any_o impure_a thought_n i_o have_v immediate_a recourse_n to_o the_o wound_n of_o christ_n and_o i_o shall_v be_v heal_v therefore_o when_o any_o this_o kind_n of_o wicked_a thought_n or_o any_o other_o shall_v infest_v we_o even_o while_o we_o be_v at_o the_o lord_n table_n yet_o our_o merciful_a and_o gracious_a god_n will_v accept_v our_o this_o kind_n of_o evil_a thought_n be_v such_o as_o we_o must_v by_o no_o mean_n esteem_v slight_a and_o inconsiderable_a they_o often_o produce_v very_o sad_a effect_n when_o encourage_v they_o we_o to_o the_o remedy_n against_o they_o first_o then_o wander_v thought_n be_v oftentimes_o occasion_v by_o a_o want_n of_o preparation_n to_o holy_a duty_n we_o careless_o and_o temerarious_o face_n of_o the_o infinite_a god_n without_o a_o solemn_a composure_n of_o spirit_n and_o a_o preparation_n of_o thought_n but_o beside_o the_o evil_a of_o so_o do_v the_o natural_a consequence_n of_o and_o infiniteness_n of_o that_o god_n who_o we_o worship_v but_o also_o that_o it_o be_v our_o high_a our_o eternal_a interest_n to_o serve_v and_o worship_n and_o obey_v he_o that_o it_o be_v our_o true_a advantage_n and_o high_a honour_n to_o approach_v to_o he_o and_o that_o we_o consult_v the_o everlasting_a good_a of_o our_o own_o soul_n 30._o in_o honour_v he_o that_o he_o will_v be_v adore_v and_o worship_v in_o sincerity_n and_o true_a devotion_n that_o he_o will_v not_o dispense_v with_o a_o hypocritical_a and_o formal_a devotion_n and_o a_o show_n of_o godliness_n but_o as_o
