knowledge_n of_o manner_n and_o if_o we_o be_v oblige_v at_o first_o to_o insist_v upon_o abstract_a truth_n we_o shall_v do_v this_o no_o far_o than_o as_o they_o conduct_v we_o to_o sensible_a truth_n in_o a_o word_n we_o will_v search_v not_o only_o after_o truth_n but_o also_o for_o advantage_n and_o profit_n in_o our_o discovery_n remember_v the_o design_n of_o the_o science_n which_o we_o treat_v of_o indeed_o morality_n be_v to_o our_o soul_n the_o same_o that_o physic_n be_v to_o our_o body_n and_o have_v for_o its_o end_n and_o scope_n the_o cure_v we_o of_o our_o spiritual_a malady_n it_o must_v apply_v itself_o principal_o unto_o two_o thing_n first_o to_o know_v the_o evil_a and_o afterward_o to_o search_v for_o remedy_n that_o may_v effect_v the_o cure_n these_o two_o design_n do_v divide_v morality_n but_o they_o be_v too_o vast_a and_o will_v lead_v we_o too_o far_o wherefore_o we_o confine_v ourselves_o to_o the_o former_a wait_v till_o providence_n put_v we_o in_o a_o way_n to_o handle_v the_o other_o we_o do_v here_o search_v for_o the_o knowledge_n of_o man_n but_o not_o as_o physic_n anatomy_n metaphysic_n logic_n medicine_n which_o consider_v he_o as_o a_o corporeal_a be_v or_o simple_o as_o a_o spiritual_a substance_n as_o a_o animal_n or_o as_o a_o reasonable_a animal_n we_o shall_v consider_v he_o only_o as_o a_o creature_n capable_a of_o virtue_n and_o happiness_n and_o which_o find_v itself_o in_o a_o state_n of_o corruption_n and_o misery_n not_o but_o this_o respect_n under_o which_o morality_n oblige_v we_o to_o consider_v ourselves_o engage_v we_o to_o borrow_v from_o some_o of_o these_o other_o science_n certain_a principle_n which_o we_o shall_v take_v from_o what_o be_v most_o evident_a in_o they_o for_o in_o order_n to_o have_v a_o perfect_a knowledge_n of_o the_o corruption_n and_o misery_n of_o man_n it_o be_v necessary_o requisite_a we_o shall_v have_v some_o knowledge_n of_o his_o nature_n his_o end_n and_o his_o excellence_n but_o if_o what_o we_o have_v to_o say_v on_o this_o subject_n seem_v in_o some_o place_n somewhat_o abstract_a above_o the_o ordinary_a capacity_n of_o man_n it_o ought_v to_o be_v remember_v that_o we_o treat_v of_o the_o source_n of_o morality_n and_o if_o it_o be_v perceive_v that_o we_o do_v not_o always_o accommodate_v ourselves_o to_o vulgar_a opinion_n it_o must_v be_v consider_v that_o this_o be_v not_o a_o fit_a place_n for_o respect_v prejudices_fw-la since_o we_o write_v mere_o to_o disentangle_v the_o confusion_n of_o our_o idea_n and_o to_o justify_v by_o reason_n that_o which_o we_o perceive_v by_o sense_n this_o work_n must_v therefore_o be_v divide_v into_o two_o part_n in_o the_o first_o we_o will_v show_v what_o man_n be_v to_o what_o be_v oblige_v and_o for_o what_o he_o be_v able_a that_o be_v to_o say_v we_o will_v treat_v of_o his_o nature_n his_o perfection_n his_o end_n his_o duty_n and_o natural_a obligation_n his_o strength_n motive_n and_o object_n that_o may_v principal_o determine_v he_o in_o his_o action_n in_o the_o second_o we_o shall_v treat_v of_o his_o irregularity_n in_o general_a and_o particular_a we_o shall_v search_v for_o the_o original_a of_o his_o corruption_n we_o shall_v consider_v the_o rivulet_n flow_v thence_o we_o shall_v view_v the_o force_n of_o his_o application_n the_o extent_n of_o his_o passion_n the_o principle_n of_o his_o vice_n and_o all_o along_o we_o shall_v show_v the_o rule_n in_o order_n to_o make_v know_v the_o irregularity_n and_o we_o will_v justify_v the_o greatness_n of_o our_o fall_n by_o show_v the_o degree_n of_o our_o rise_n and_o elevation_n may_v god_n who_o be_v the_o master_n of_o mind_n purify_v i_o by_o his_o grace_n to_o the_o end_n that_o i_o may_v say_v nothing_o but_o what_o refer_v to_o his_o glory_n and_o be_v conformable_a to_o the_o holy_a and_o eternal_a truth_n of_o his_o gospel_n amen_n the_o first_o part_n wherein_o we_o
