sin_n possible_a as_o to_o eternal_a punishment_n or_o punishment_n after_o this_o life_n neither_o do_v christ_n satisfy_v for_o the_o breach_n of_o any_o law_n as_o to_o any_o eternal_a punishment_n or_o punishment_n after_o this_o life_n but_o only_o for_o temporal_a not_o that_o i_o affirm_v that_o the_o author_n hold_v this_o opinion_n for_o it_o be_v apparent_a he_o hold_v the_o contrary_a but_o this_o follow_v by_o undeniable_a consequence_n from_o his_o discourse_n though_o he_o see_v it_o not_o but_o will_v deny_v this_o consequence_n three_o that_o there_o be_v no_o possible_a author_n much_o of_o his_o judgement_n in_o the_o particulars_n here_o endeavour_v to_o be_v rectify_v other_o mistake_n of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n sense_n in_o deny_v justification_n by_o work_n 1._o his_o deny_v that_o there_o be_v any_o such_o thing_n as_o any_o law_n of_o god_n set_v the_o gospel_n itself_o aside_o make_v with_o mankind_n to_o this_o tenor_n or_o purport_n that_o he_o that_o do_v not_o every_o thing_n that_o god_n require_v of_o he_o whatsoever_o whether_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n or_o the_o write_n of_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n shall_v be_v subject_a to_o eternal_a misery_n or_o misery_n after_o this_o life_n and_o if_o man_n do_v all_o that_o god_n require_v of_o they_o by_o any_o way_n make_v his_o will_n know_v they_o shall_v be_v eternal_o happy_a or_o happy_a after_o this_o life_n but_o he_o think_v there_o be_v no_o law_n of_o god_n that_o threaten_v future_a misery_n or_o promise_n future_a happiness_n but_o only_o the_o gospel_n itself_o which_o be_v reveae_v in_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n and_o that_o any_o law_n threaten_v future_a misery_n i_o mean_v after_o this_o life_n or_o promise_v future_a happiness_n be_v the_o gospel_n itself_o whereby_o man_n always_o be_v and_o be_v justify_v and_o save_v now_o to_o prove_v against_o this_o and_o that_o we_o must_v hold_v a_o law_n threaten_v future_a and_o eternal_a misery_n to_o all_o sinner_n and_o that_o all_o be_v condemn_v and_o none_o justify_v by_o this_o law_n and_o that_o this_o law_n be_v distinct_a and_o quite_o different_a from_o the_o gospel_n let_v these_o thing_n be_v consider_v 1._o if_o there_o be_v no_o law_n distinct_a from_o the_o gospel_n threaten_v future_a misery_n or_o misery_n after_o this_o life_n than_o christ_n never_o satisfy_v for_o the_o future_a misery_n that_o be_v threaten_v to_o any_o never_o die_v to_o free_v any_o from_o the_o wrath_n to_o come_v from_o the_o eternal_a or_o future_a curse_n of_o any_o such_o law_n but_o only_o from_o a_o temporal_a curse_n or_o curse_v of_o this_o life_n the_o consequence_n be_v apparent_a because_o he_o know_v not_o what_o he_o say_v that_o shall_v affirm_v that_o christ_n be_v make_v under_o the_o gospel_n to_o free_v we_o from_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o the_o gospel_n either_o threaten_v nothing_o as_o many_o hold_n but_o i_o gospel_n there_o be_v indeed_o a_o satisfaction_n make_v to_o the_o law_n that_o god_n may_v with_o justice_n and_o honour_n with_o safety_n to_o the_o law_n make_v this_o act_n of_o oblivion_n this_o law_n of_o grace_n the_o gospel_n therefore_o sure_o that_o first_o original-law_n do_v threaten_v eternal_a death_n to_o sinner_n and_o not_o mere_o temporal_a punishment_n else_o there_o can_v as_o to_o conscience_n conscience_n essential_o respect_v the_o future_a state_n and_o life_n to_o come-concernments_a viz._n as_o require_v obedience_n with_o a_o promise_n of_o future_a happiness_n and_o under_o the_o peril_n of_o future_a or_o eternal_a death_n and_o also_o as_o remit_v and_o pardon_v sin_n as_o to_o future_a misery_n now_o in_o this_o high_a important_a sense_n this_o same_o law_n i_o mean_v material_o and_o in_o word_n the_o same_o must_v be_v consider_v both_o as_o a_o strict_a law_n and_o a_o gracious_a law_n or_o gospel_n what_o be_v a_o law_n but_o a_o signification_n of_o the_o rector_n will_n any_o way_n whatsoever_o oblige_v the_o subject_n to_o obedience_n by_o promise_a reward_n to_o the_o obedient_a and_o threaten_a punishment_n to_o the_o disobedient_a now_o in_o this_o very_a law_n in_o this_o high_a sense_n there_o be_v signification_n of_o his_o will_n both_o of_o a_o original_a strict_a law_n constitute_v eternal_a or_o future_a a_o sacrifice_n so_o here_o this_o consideration_n this_o very_a law_n give_v in_o the_o same_o word_n at_o sinai_n do_v reveal_v and_o signify_v these_o formally-distinct_a law_n first_o a_o strict_a exact_v of_o obedience_n all_o their_o life_n to_o all_o that_o he_o command_v under_o the_o peril_n of_o future_a death_n or_o wrath_n to_o come_v else_o as_o i_o have_v make_v apparent_a before_o there_o can_v be_v no_o pardon_n as_o to_o wrath_n to_o come_v or_o satisfaction_n by_o christ_n for_o wrath_n to_o come_v due_a by_o this_o law_n as_o to_o such_o sin_n and_o in_o this_o strict_a sense_n the_o apostle_n paul_n use_v the_o word_n law_n in_o the_o most_o of_o those_o place_n in_o dispute_n which_o the_o author_n chief_o insist_o on_o to_o reconcile_v they_o to_o st._n james_n viz._n the_o 3d._n and_o four_o chapter_n to_o the_o roman_n and_o gal._n 3._o v._n 10_o 11_o 12_o 13._o and_o in_o this_o sense_n the_o law_n be_v no_o type_n or_o shadow_n nor_o to_o vanish_v away_o but_o stand_v in_o force_n unto_o this_o day_n second_o also_o it_o do_v reveal_v that_o though_o they_o shall_v sometime_o during_o their_o life_n which_o be_v enough_o for_o condemnation_n by_o this_o law_n in_o the_o first_o sense_n fail_v in_o obedience_n to_o it_o yet_o their_o condition_n shall_v not_o be_v hopeless_a the_o punishment_n make_v due_a to_o they_o by_o this_o law_n shall_v be_v pardon_v and_o they_o shall_v yet_o enjoy_v the_o promise_a future_a life_n upon_o condition_n they_o do_v repent_v and_o sincere_o love_v and_o serve_v god_n endeavour_v obedience_n to_o all_o his_o law_n moral_n judicial_a and_o ceremonial_a with_o the_o prevail_a design_n and_o bend_v of_o their_o soul_n now_o in_o this_o sense_n the_o law_n of_o moses_n be_v no_o type_n or_o shadow_n but_o the_o very_a gospel_n the_o word_n of_o faith_n which_o the_o apostle_n preach_v rom._n 10._o 6_o 7_o 8._o and_o in_o this_o sense_n david_n take_v the_o law_n in_o most_o of_o his_o encomium_n of_o it_o and_o in_o this_o sense_n justification_n and_o salvation_n be_v not_o deny_v to_o it_o or_o the_o work_v of_o it_o by_o the_o apostle_n to_o they_o that_o live_v under_o this_o dispensation_n nor_o to_o we_o by_o it_o for_o it_o yet_o continue_v the_o same_o for_o substance_n have_v the_o same_o sanction_n and_o condition_n or_o precept_n in_o the_o general_n viz._n that_o if_o we_o sinner_n repent_v and_o sincere_o obey_v all_o his_o command_n he_o will_v be_v our_o god_n to_o bless_v we_o to_o justify_v and_o save_v we_o from_o all_o our_o sin_n though_o many_o of_o
