give_v we_o a_o full_a account_n 63._o vid._n cypr._n epist_n 63._o 8._o i_o will_v observe_v that_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n can_v assign_v no_o peculiar_a necessity_n or_o usefulness_n of_o this_o sacrament_n above_o other_o that_o shall_v give_v a_o probable_a reason_n of_o the_o mighty_a difference_n betwixt_o this_o and_o other_o and_o of_o such_o a_o strange_a wonderful_a dispensation_n as_o the_o eat_a our_o bless_a saviour_n himself_o nay_o with_o they_o both_o baplism_n and_o confession_n be_v esteem_v much_o more_o necessary_a and_o the_o omission_n of_o they_o more_o dangerous_a than_o the_o omission_n of_o this_o sacrament_n 9_o to_o conclude_v this_o whole_a matter_n i_o think_v i_o have_v sufficient_o show_v that_o this_o doctrine_n have_v no_o foundation_n in_o scripture_n i_o will_v have_v consider_v at_o large_a the_o sense_n of_o the_o primitive_a church_n in_o it_o and_o i_o do_v not_o question_v but_o to_o have_v be_v able_a very_o clear_o to_o make_v out_o that_o it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n quite_o unknown_a to_o the_o church_n of_o god_n for_o many_o age_n but_o that_o be_v not_o consistent_a with_o the_o brevity_n i_o be_o at_o present_a force_a to_o use_v i_o will_v therefore_o only_o observe_v this_o one_o thing_n that_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o conclude_v this_o to_o have_v be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o father_n only_a from_o some_o accidental_a or_o general_a expression_n which_o they_o sometime_o make_v use_n of_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o none_o of_o they_o design_o treat_v of_o this_o matter_n or_o explain_v it_o to_o we_o church_n and_o as_o for_o general_a expression_n the_o calling_n what_o they_o receive_v the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n that_o can_v not_o be_v avoid_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n require_v they_o even_o according_a to_o our_o opinion_n of_o this_o matter_n and_o we_o see_v that_o notwithstanding_o we_o have_v make_v such_o express_a declaration_n against_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n and_o that_o by_o reason_n of_o this_o controversy_n we_o express_v ourselves_o more_o cautious_o than_o we_o may_v suppose_v the_o father_n will_v do_v before_o any_o controversy_n be_v move_v ve_v about_o it_o yet_o some_o general_a expression_n of_o our_o own_o divine_n be_v often_o turn_v against_o we_o by_o those_o of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n and_o there_o be_v no_o question_n but_o be_v the_o author_n of_o they_o as_o old_a as_o the_o
any_o prayer_n put_v up_o to_o any_o creature_n it_o may_v be_v it_o will_v be_v say_v that_o the_o saint_n be_v not_o then_o in_o heaven_n and_o so_o be_v not_o in_o a_o condition_n to_o hear_v the_o prayer_n that_o shall_v be_v put_v up_o to_o they_o and_o have_v not_o so_o much_o favour_n with_o god_n as_o they_o may_v be_v suppose_v to_o have_v now_o since_o the_o resurrection_n of_o christ_n that_o he_o have_v admit_v they_o so_o near_o into_o his_o presence_n now_o in_o answer_n to_o this_o i_o shall_v not_o at_o present_a pretend_v to_o determine_v whether_o the_o saint_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n be_v in_o heaven_n before_o christ_n resurrection_n or_o not_o nor_o whether_o they_o and_o other_o saint_n since_o be_v there_o now_o because_o a_o great_a many_o christian_n of_o no_o mean_a authority_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n have_v be_v of_o different_a opinion_n in_o these_o matter_n only_o i_o think_v these_o two_o or_o three_o thing_n be_v very_o plain_a 1._o that_o enoch_n and_o elias_n be_v suppose_v by_o a_o great_a many_o before_o our_o saviour_n time_n to_o be_v in_o heaven_n and_o they_o must_v have_v be_v look_v upon_o by_o they_o to_o be_v very_o great_a favourite_n of_o god_n by_o be_v take_v out_o of_o this_o world_n in_o so_o strange_a and_o wonderful_a a_o manner_n as_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o they_o be_v and_o yet_o we_o hear_v as_o little_a of_o pray_v to_o they_o as_o to_o any_o other_o person_n 2._o suppose_v it_o not_o agree_v upon_o then_o whether_o saint_n be_v in_o heaven_n yet_o all_o agree_v that_o the_o angel_n be_v and_o they_o be_v altogether_o as_o well_o capacitate_v to_o hear_v and_o answer_v prayer_n which_o shall_v have_v be_v put_v up_o to_o they_o then_o as_o they_o be_v now_o and_o yet_o we_o find_v as_o little_a of_o man_n pray_v to_o angel_n as_o they_o do_v to_o saint_n in_o those_o time_n 3._o whatever_o reason_n can_v be_v assign_v for_o pray_v to_o creature_n now_o will_v have_v hold_v as_o well_o then_o whatever_o necessity_n or_o conveniency_n or_o advantage_n or_o fitness_n there_o may_v be_v in_o it_o be_v all_o the_o same_o and_o indeed_o much_o great_a then_o than_o they_o be_v now_o upon_o these_o two_o account_n 1._o because_o the_o christian_a religion_n be_v of_o itself_o a_o state_n of_o much_o great_a perfection_n than_o any_o dispensation_n that_o be_v before_o it_o god_n have_v in_o it_o reveal_v himself_o more_o clear_o and_o plain_o to_o the_o world_n have_v more_o evidence_v his_o love_n and_o tenderness_n to_o mankind_n have_v give_v we_o great_a encouragement_n to_o draw_v near_o to_o he_o he_o speak_v to_o we_o in_o the_o gospel_n as_o a_o father_n to_o his_o child_n as_o a_o reconcile_a father_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o therefore_o according_o in_o that_o form_n of_o prayer_n which_o our_o saviour_n have_v leave_v we_o that_o be_v the_o appellation_n which_o he_o have_v teach_v we_o to_o make_v use_n of_o our_o father_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n now_o why_o shall_v a_o child_n be_v afraid_a to_o approach_v the_o presence_n of_o his_o father_n or_o what_o need_n have_v he_o of_o any_o body_n to_o introduce_v he_o under_o the_o jewish_a dispensation_n when_o the_o law_n be_v give_v with_o thundering_n and_o lightning_n when_o god_n be_v call_v by_o the_o terrible_a name_n of_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n there_o may_v be_v more_o reason_n to_o think_v of_o some_o body_n to_o introduce_v they_o to_o his_o presence_n which_o yet_o we_o do_v not_o find_v be_v ever_o recommend_v or_o practise_v among_o they_o how_o much_o more_o may_v christian_n come_v with_o boldness_n to_o the_o throne_n of_o mercy_n and_o expect_v to_o find_v grace_n to_o help_v in_o time_n of_o need_n but_o what_o be_v more_o considerable_a 2._o christian_n have_v christ_n for_o their_o mediator_n who_o be_v able_a to_o save_v to_o the_o uttermost_a all_o those_o that_o come_v to_o god_n by_o he_o he_o be_v in_o heaven_n ready_a to_o plead_v their_o cause_n and_o to_o get_v their_o prayer_n hear_v and_o their_o person_n accept_v and_o they_o that_o have_v such_o a_o advocate_n need_v not_o fly_v to_o any_o else_o but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o the_o church_n before_o christ_n and_o therefore_o if_o the_o thing_n have_v be_v at_o all_o lawful_a they_o have_v much_o more_o reason_n to_o make_v saint_n and_o angel_n their_o patron_n than_o christian_n have_v and_o yet_o we_o see_v that_o in_o the_o account_n which_o we_o have_v in_o the_o bible_n of_o the_o church_n of_o god_n before_o christ_n for_o near_o 4000_o year_n there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o hint_n of_o any_o thing_n of_o this_o kind_n 3._o what_o i_o have_v say_v already_o that_o all_o along_o in_o the_o old_a testament_n prayer_n be_v appropriate_v to_o god_n and_o that_o without_o any_o reserve_n or_o distinction_n may_v be_v sufficient_a to_o show_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n in_o that_o case_n but_o i_o have_v this_o further_a to_o add_v that_o the_o same_o scripture_n add_v with_o the_o same_o general_a word_n condemn_v as_o idolatrous_a all_o the_o old_a heathen_a worship_n now_o i_o have_v show_v before_o that_o much_o of_o this_o worship_n be_v pay_v to_o creature_n under_o the_o same_o notion_n and_o apprehension_n that_o those_o of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n worship_n saint_n and_o angel_n indeed_o there_o be_v this_o difference_n that_o most_o of_o those_o worship_v in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n be_v probable_o good_a creature_n as_o most_o of_o those_o who_o the_o heathen_n worship_v be_v bad_a one_o and_o it_o may_v be_v devil_n but_o this_o distinction_n of_o good_a or_o bad_a creature_n may_v make_v the_o worship_n more_o or_o less_o impious_a but_o not_o more_o or_o less_o idolatrous_a whatever_o will_v make_v it_o idolatry_n in_o the_o one_o case_n will_v make_v it_o so_o in_o the_o other_o the_o worship_n appropriate_v to_o god_n be_v no_o more_o due_a to_o a_o good_a creature_n than_o it_o be_v to_o a_o bad_a one_o since_o therefore_o i_o have_v show_v that_o the_o scripture_n every_o where_o condemn_v the_o worship_n which_o the_o heathen_a give_v to_o what_o they_o own_v not_o to_o be_v god_n and_o which_o they_o do_v not_o intend_v to_o worship_n as_o the_o supreme_a god_n i_o say_v since_o this_o be_v condemn_v not_o only_o as_o impious_a for_o choose_v ill_a creature_n but_o as_o idolatrous_a for_o give_v what_o belong_v only_o to_o god_n this_o must_v equal_o prove_v all_o creature_n worship_n to_o be_v idolatrous_a 4._o this_o creature_n worship_n be_v as_o little_o hear_v of_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o old_a hear_v of_o it_o be_v indeed_o but_o what_o approbation_n it_o meet_v with_o we_o may_v see_v by_o consider_v these_o particular_n the_o first_o instance_n be_v that_o of_o the_o devil_n desire_v our_o saviour_n to_o worship_v he_o upon_o promise_n to_o give_v he_o all_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o world_n but_o let_v we_o see_v what_o our_o saviour_n answer_v he_o do_v not_o put_v he_o off_o with_o tell_v he_o either_o the_o dignity_n of_o his_o own_o person_n or_o the_o unfitness_n of_o the_o thing_n in_o worship_v he_o because_o he_o be_v a_o devil_n but_o he_o give_v such_o a_o reason_n as_o will_v hold_v against_o all_o worship_v of_o creature_n thou_o shall_v worship_v the_o lord_n thy_o god_n and_o he_o only_o shall_v thou_o serve_v from_o which_o word_n i_o will_v observe_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o that_o the_o worship_n which_o the_o devil_n desire_v and_o which_o our_o saviour_n say_v must_v be_v give_v only_o to_o god_n be_v not_o to_o offer_v sacrifice_n to_o he_o which_o the_o writer_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n make_v the_o only_a outward_a worship_n appropriate_v to_o god_n but_o it_o be_v to_o fall_v down_o and_o adore_v he_o from_o whence_o we_o may_v infer_v that_o to_o fall_v down_o and_o adore_v any_o creature_n must_v be_v idolatry_n which_o part_n of_o worship_n its_o apparent_a the_o church_n of_o rome_n give_v to_o their_o saint_n and_o angel_n 2._o i_o will_v observe_v here_o that_o the_o devil_n do_v not_o pretend_v to_o be_v the_o supreme_a god_n but_o plain_o the_o contrary_a for_o when_o he_o show_v our_o saviour_n all_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o world_n he_o tell_v he_o that_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v give_v to_o he_o luke_n 4.6_o in_o which_o he_o plain_o profess_v not_o a_o supreme_a but_o a_o delegated_a power_n so_o that_o have_v not_o our_o saviour_n in_o his_o answer_n condemn_v the_o worship_n of_o creature_n though_o own_a and_o acknowledge_v to_o be_v creature_n he_o have_v not_o give_v a_o full_a answer_n to_o the_o devil_n for_o the_o devil_n do_v not_o desire_v to_o be_v worship_v as_o the_o supreme_a god_n another_o
instance_n we_o have_v of_o this_o kind_n be_v that_o of_o st._n john_n in_o the_o revelation_n fall_v down_o to_o worship_n the_o angel_n who_o we_o see_v put_v he_o off_o it_o with_o the_o same_o kind_n of_o general_a word_n that_o our_o saviour_n use_v in_o the_o former_a instance_n see_v thou_o do_v it_o not_o i_o be_o thy_o fellow_n servant_n worship_n god_n rev._n 22.18.19_o here_o i_o will_v observe_v as_o in_o the_o former_a case_n that_o the_o worship_n which_o the_o angel_n reject_v and_o appropriate_n to_o god_n be_v fall_v down_o at_o his_o foot_n to_o adore_v he_o and_o in_o the_o next_o place_n i_o will_v observe_v that_o have_v adoration_n be_v due_a to_o a_o angel_n the_o true_a answer_n to_o st._n john_n have_v be_v that_o he_o shall_v have_v a_o care_v not_o to_o mistake_v he_o to_o be_v god_n who_o be_v but_o a_o angel_n and_o so_o give_v he_o more_o than_o be_v due_a to_o he_o but_o we_o see_v he_o throw_v off_o the_o whole_a without_o any_o reserve_n or_o distinction_n and_o for_o a_o reason_n that_o will_v hold_v against_o all_o creature_n worship_n that_o he_o be_v his_o fellow-servant_n in_o a_o word_n it_o have_v be_v no_o great_a secret_a for_o head_n he_o be_v the_o only_a mediator_n betwixt_o god_n and_o man_n and_o therefore_o apply_v to_o any_o other_o be_v leave_v he_o who_o be_v the_o head_n of_o the_o church_n and_o then_o no_o wonder_n if_o it_o beguile_v we_o of_o our_o reward_n this_o argument_n be_v very_o plain_a and_o very_a strong_a against_o the_o practice_n of_o pray_v to_o saint_n or_o angel_n and_o it_o have_v this_o one_o thing_n very_o observable_a in_o it_o that_o if_o this_o text_n prove_v it_o unlawful_a to_o set_v up_o any_o more_o mediator_n but_o jesus_n christ_n it_o must_v be_v understand_v of_o mediator_n of_o intercession_n for_o no_o body_n can_v so_o much_o as_o pretend_v that_o angel_n be_v mediator_n of_o redemption_n as_o those_o of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n without_o any_o ground_n at_o all_o make_v the_o distinction_n i_o may_v show_v far_o the_o idolatry_n of_o this_o practice_n of_o pray_v to_o saint_n and_o angel_n from_o this_o that_o it_o must_v suppose_v divine_a heart_n and_o the_o secret_a thought_n and_o sincerity_n or_o insincerity_n of_o all_o the_o man_n and_o woman_n in_o the_o world_n and_o that_o they_o can_v perfect_o attend_v to_o they_o all_o at_o the_o same_o time_n which_o be_v perfection_n that_o the_o scripture_n never_o attribute_n to_o any_o but_o god_n and_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n it_o be_v hardly_o conceivable_a of_o any_o creature_n but_o i_o shall_v content_v myself_o to_o have_v name_v these_o thing_n and_o shall_v conclude_v this_o whole_a matter_n with_o just_a propose_v those_o two_o short_a consideration_n 1._o i_o desire_v it_o may_v be_v consider_v that_o in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n there_o be_v no_o external_n part_v of_o religion_n appropriate_v to_o god_n and_o incommunicable_a to_o creature_n but_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o mass_n and_o if_o in_o the_o precede_a discourse_n i_o have_v overthrow_v the_o foundation_n of_o that_o there_o be_v then_o nothing_o at_o all_o remain_v 2._o i_o desire_v it_o may_v be_v consider_v that_o the_o reason_n common_o give_v to_o justify_v prayer_n to_o saint_n and_o angel_n will_v if_o well_o follow_v hinder_v man_n from_o ever_o pray_v to_o god_n at_o all_o as_o in_o fact_n this_o have_v much_o estrange_v man_n from_o god_n in_o those_o country_n where_o they_o have_v have_v not_o protestant_n among_o they_o to_o make_v they_o ashamed_a of_o it_o and_o even_o near_a ourselves_o i_o believe_v we_o may_v just_o say_v that_o at_o least_o ten_o prayer_n be_v put_v up_o to_o creature_n for_o one_o that_o be_v put_v up_o to_o god_n supremacy_n of_o the_o pope_n supremacy_n i_o now_o come_v to_o consider_v the_o oath_n of_o supremacy_n which_o consist_v of_o two_o part_n i._o a_o declaration_n of_o the_o unlawfulness_n and_o impiety_n of_o take_v up_o arm_n against_o the_o king_n upon_o account_n of_o his_o be_v excommunicate_v or_o deprive_v by_o the_o pope_n ii_o a_o renunciation_n of_o the_o pope_n pretend_a supremacy_n over_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n particular_o over_o that_o part_n of_o it_o in_o this_o kingdom_n as_o to_o the_o first_o of_o these_o i_o need_v not_o insist_v upon_o it_o becanse_o if_o i_o can_v prove_v the_o second_o that_o the_o pope_n have_v of_o right_a no_o spiritual_a power_n here_o the_o other_o must_v of_o course_n fall_v with_o it_o i_o will_v only_o observe_v before_o i_o proceed_v that_o if_o those_o of_o the_o roman_a communion_n among_o we_o do_v believe_v that_o the_o pope_n have_v a_o power_n from_o god_n to_o excommunicate_v and_o to_o deprive_v prince_n of_o their_o kingdom_n for_o heresy_n and_o that_o therefore_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o concur_v with_o the_o pope_n as_o far_o they_o can_v to_o put_v his_o sentence_n in_o execution_n this_o must_v make_v they_o enemy_n to_o all_o protestant_n and_o consequent_o they_o have_v reason_n to_o expect_v that_o protestant_n shall_v have_v a_o care_n of_o they_o but_o if_o they_o do_v believe_v that_o god_n have_v not_o give_v any_o such_o power_n to_o the_o pope_n they_o have_v then_o reason_n to_o have_v a_o care_n of_o their_o guide_n who_o be_v do_v what_o he_o can_v under_o pretence_n of_o authority_n from_o god_n to_o carry_v they_o to_o treason_n and_o murder_n and_o all_o the_o villainy_n which_o must_v follow_v a_o attempt_n to_o turn_v out_o their_o king_n and_o all_o his_o protestant_a subject_n
